Mascot signals Happy Holstein Haven

Boettchers named Fillmore County Farm Family of the Year

WYKOFF, Minn. – It is easy to nd the Boettcher family’s Happy Holstein Haven because in their front lawn is a 15-foot tall, berglass Holstein cow. Behind the cow, eight siloes soar upward like sentinels, and in front of the cow, a collection of antique tractors, antique farm implements and American ags complete the festive scene.

The Boettchers – Curt and Cheryle and their sons, Brian and Chad – milk 300 cows on their dairy farm near Wykoff. They are also assisted on the dairy by their daughter Nichol and granddaughter Kayla.

The Boettchers purchased their ber glass cow from Schiltz Farms Milk and Cheese Factory in La Crescent when it went out of business over 40 years ago. The display is impressive enough that the Boettchers see people stop and take photos and have even seen a tour bus stop.

This year, the Boettchers

will celebrate being named the 2023 Fillmore County Farm Family of the Year.

“It was pretty nice that we got asked,” Curt said. “Not that we deserve it, I don’t think.”

Brian and Chad planned from the beginning to dairy farm. The two have been farming together since they were young and remember driving the skid loader together to clean up after the cows.

As kids, the brothers also remember helping their grandpa, Victor Boettcher, feed the cows or piling into the tractor cab alongside him. Even after Victor could not farm anymore, he would still watch from the porch.

The brothers never left the farm and eventually formed a partnership with their parents. The two siblings continue to work together well. Chad said someone even told them that they think alike.

“Brian and I basically know how each other operates,” Chad said. “We know what to expect out of each other.”

milk 300 cows, were named the 2023 Fillmore County Farm Family of the Year.

Brian agreed.

“You (don’t) have to wonder what the other one is going to do,” he said.

The Boettchers said they like the variety that comes with farm work. For Brian, favorite farm memories come

from the camaraderie.

“It is fun being able to joke around and kind of mess around,” he said. “You (have) to work and play.”

Curt originally took over the farm in 1972 from his dad, Victor. Victor had milked

Guernsey cows, but Curt decided to milk Holsteins because of milk production. He started off with 45 cows, and now, nearly 50 years later, Turn to BOETTCHERS

the herd has grown to about 300. The Boettchers said they have not purchased cows since the 1970s.

In 1998, the Boettchers put in a freestall barn and a milking parlor. In 2013, they installed four Lely Astronaut robotic milking systems.

When they added robots, they cut a hole on each side of the freestall barn and built out milking rooms for the robots on each side. Their free-ow system has two robots on one side of the barn and two on the other.

Chad said labor played a major role in their decision to install robots.

“It was kind of the point where we either needed to downgrade on cow numbers or we had to try doing the robots or nd a bunch of hired help,” Chad said.

The Boettchers operate their entire farm solely with family labor. Though the robots do most of the milking, they retained their original parlor for cows who need extra attention such as at freshening or dry off. They usually milk about 30 cows in the parlor.

The family farms about 1,000 acres. They raise corn for silage and grain, alfalfa for haylage and hay, and oats for oatlage and grain. They bed their freestall barn with straw on top of mattresses, so raising some of the oats for grain is important.

They also always try to keep extra inventory of hay and many years are

able to sell

some. The Boettchers said the purchase of their big square baler in 2004 was one of the most important decisions they have made. Before that, they were making 25,000 small squares each year for their cows.

The Boettchers have hosted the public on their farm several times. In 1993, they hosted Fillmore County’s rst breakfast on the farm. In 2013, with robots barely installed, they host-

ed the Fillmore County Dairy Night on the Farm. For the future, the Boettchers are content with their current farm and are not looking to expand.

A do-it-themselves attitude

The Kasper family shared how they managed farm labor roles when a University of Minnesota Extension Successful Dairy Systems Field Day was held Aug. 1, 2018, on their dairy farm near Medford, Minnesota. Three generations were involved in the Kaspers’ dairy: Darwin and Barb, their son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Dawn, and Scott and Dawn’s sons, Derrick and Patrick. The family milked 235 cows and did most of their eld, maintenance and veterinary work. Darwin was the main milker and in charge of reproduction with Derrick slowly taking over those roles. Scott served as trouble-shooter and repairman as well as crop manager. Patrick also worked with crops and handled the majority of feeding. Dawn lled in for anyone needing help and also had an off-farm job. Barb held the role of groundsperson. Playing to everyone’s strengths helped keep the Kaspers’ farm running smoothly.

Retaliatory tariffs cause tension in dairy market

In August 2018, the Class III milk price had dropped more than $1 per hundredweight during the previous after retaliatory tariffs from Mexico and China went into effect in June. Other dairy prices fell as well. In response, the federal government announced a $12 billion assistance package for all farmers and processors affected by trade wars, which was set to be available on Labor Day. The funding was earmarked to be used for direct payments to farmers, government purchasing of commodities that would have otherwise been used in the export market and the development of additional foreign markets.

Klinkners overcome challenges to pursue dreams

Rob and Gail Klinkner were awarded a National Young Jersey Breeder Award at the 2018 annual meeting of the American Jersey Cattle Association in Canton, Ohio. The annual award went to active members of the AJCA between the ages of 28 and 40 who showed dedication to developing their herd of registered Jerseys. In 2018, the Klinkners milked 55 head of registered Jerseys, Holsteins, Guernseys and Ayrshires at Pine Prairie Farm near Viroqua, Wisconsin. Rob and Gail purchased their farm in 2008. They twice sold part of their herd to pay down debt or to afford necessary equipment or machinery. The award acknowledged their years of hard work.

Green County cheesemaker opens major expansion

Klondike Cheese Co. expanded production as it entered its second century of cheesemaking at its plant near Monroe, Wisconsin. A new automated production line which used a robotic system allowed for higher production without having to add labor. Klondike Cheese Co. was able to keep the size of its team of master cheesemakers to six and its employee numbers to 230. The company had already been operating an automated production line of feta cheese, but the new line was expected to triple output of brick, Muenster and Havarti cheese. The 240,000-square-foot plant had been run by the Buholzer family for four generations.

Rising from the ashes

When a re claimed their barn, 70 calves and 13 cows in February 2013, the Muehlenhardts did not see it as an excuse to quit dairy farming. Scott Muehlenhardt, his parents, Lee and Mary, and his sister and brother-in-law, Shari and Nate Gerdes, rebuilt their barn that housed fresh cows and their calves on Halquist Farm near Belle Plaine, Minnesota. The contractor who built the original barn started working on plans with the family for the rebuild only a week after the re, with the Muehlenhardts deciding to upgrade and modernize with the new barn. By the end of May, the family was able to use the new and improved structure, which Scott said was the barn he had always wanted.

The farm must go

When Raymond “Butch” Mussell decided to retire in 2012, none of his children were interested in taking over the family’s 205cow, second-generation dairy farm near Plainview, Minnesota. Mussell had operated the farm for 33 years and did not want that work to go to waste. That is where Jaime Wolf stepped in. Wolf had grown up on a beef farm and wanted to own his own dairy. Tom Anderson, of Farm Business Management, matched Mussell and Wolf, and a solution was found. Wolf came to work on Mussell’s farm for a trial period. The arrangement worked so well that by 2013, Mussel and Wolf created a plan for how to transition the farm to Wolf.

Bongards purchases Perham cheese plant

News broke on July 29, 2003, that Bongards was purchasing the Land O’Lakes plant in Perham, Minnesota. When Land O’Lakes announced at the beginning of that year that it intended to close its whey-processing plant at the end of January and move the operation to its other sites in Pine Island, Minnesota, and Spencer and Kiel, both of Wisconsin, longtime employees of the Perham plant were shocked and concerned. The news of the purchase by Bongards went a long way in alleviating those worries. Bongards planned to reopen the facility and hire 30 to 40 employees within three months for producing high-protein whey used primarily in health drinks. Cheese operations were expected to be added ve to eight months later.

New milking system pays dividends for Kuballs

In 2000, father and son Bob and Nate Kuball switched to a new milking schedule, which had one group of their cows milked three times a day while the other group skipped the afternoon milking and was milked twice a day. The Kuballs were milking 115 cows on their dairy farm near Waterville, Minnesota. Within the new schedule, cows were switched back and forth between the two groups depending on where they were in their reproduction cycles, among other factors. The new milking arrangement increased production and allowed the Kuballs to set a labor schedule that the pair said t perfectly with their needs. By 2003, they found the new system, with adjustments, helped them see their overall number of cows producing 100 pounds or more per day increase considerably.

DAIRY CALENDAR

Curious about new technologies to make your dairy farm more efcient and productive? See rsthand some of the newest innovations in feeding, rumination and activity tracking, and sand-separation systems at two forward-thinking Wisconsin dairy farms.

The PDPW Innovation & Technology Farm Tours will be held Aug. 23-24 in Dorchester, Wisconsin, and Deer Park, Wisconsin, respectively. Join dairy producers and industry professionals for conversations and behind-the-scenes tours to understand the technologies and management practices to successfully implement them.

Tours will be held at:

– JTP Dairy, owned and operated by Jake and Tolea Peissig family, W1202 County Road A, Dorchester, Wis., will open their doors from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 23. The dairy features innovations in both the milking parlor and feeding systems. They have used a guided ow, DeLaval VMS system for more than a decade and have recently added robots for increased availability. An MFR Lely Vector System for feeding has allowed them to reduce feed shrink and waste, and a haylage block cutter allows for a cleaner face and reduced heating in the silage.

– Minglewood Inc., owned and operated by Kevin and Roxann Solum and Jacob and Kristin Quist, 60 105th St., Deer Park, Wis., will host the event from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 24. Minglewood Inc. is the rst dairy in the U.S. to install Stjernholm Sand Separation system from Denmark that delivers cleaner, ner sand that is ready for rebedding in 21 days. They utilize smaXtec rumination and activity system as well as a combination of parlor and robotic barn to milk 1,200 cows, including 8 DeLaval classic robots.

Tours will begin and end at each farm location; attendees are encouraged to carpool to each event. Registration information and more details are available at www.pdpw.org or contact PDPW at 800-947-7379. Up to three continuing education units per tour are available from Dairy AdvanCE.

To create a forum for open dialogue and offer a rsthand look at the innovations used in dairy production, the Agricultural Community Engagement Twilight Meetings will be hosted by dairy farms in Washington, Rock, Polk and Wood counties.

A partnership between Professional Dairy Producers, Wisconsin Counties Association, the Wisconsin Towns Association and Pheasants Forever, ACE Twilight Meetings offer opportunities for community leaders, elected ofcials, educators, conservation specialists, dairy farmers and area community members to connect, network and learn together.

“If you’re looking to get involved in your community and learn about the common priorities and challenges facing all of us, attending an ACE Twilight Meeting is the perfect way to get started,” said John Haag, dairy producer and PDPW board president. “Candid conversations with dairy farmers, elected ofcials, conservation and community leaders open the doors to solving some of the issues we face in Wisconsin.”

Each meeting will begin with a tour of the host dairy farm at 6 p.m., providing attendees a rsthand look at how animals are cared for, housed and fed as well as a look at the milking facilities, barns and technologies dairy producers use each day. Ice cream will be served at 7 p.m. with open dialogue about such community issues as water, conservation, roadways and transportation, educational opportunities and more. Meetings will conclude at 8:30 p.m.

The 2023 ACE Twilight Meeting host farms are:

– Aug. 28: Roden Echo Valley LLC, 5545 County Road Y, West Bend, Wisconsin. Hosted by Bob and Cindy Roden and family.

– Aug. 29: Larson Acres, 18218 W. State Road 59, Evansville, Wisconsin. Hosted by the Larson family.

Morning barn re turns day upside down for Schoessows

MEQUON, Wis. – The Schoessows knew their Christmas of 2013 was going to be nothing like they thought when a re broke out that morning in the farm’s original dairy barn.

Plans for a splendid holiday meal and opening presents with family fell by the wayside when they saw a piece of their farm’s history go up in ames. Instead, gifts took the form of help from neighbors, friends and family who dropped everything to be there for a family in crisis.

“It was the worst day we’ve ever had on the farm,” Peggy Schoessow said. “But I also remember the outpouring of help and the caring people who supported us. A neighbor down the road who we never met before dropped off a coffee cake. There were people bringing us all kinds of stuff.”

Peggy and her husband, Dean, and their son, Michael and his wife, Sam, milk 85 registered Holsteins and farm 630 acres near Mequon. Michael, who is the seventh generation on the farm, has been farming with his parents since 2010. He and Sam have two sons, Colton and Grant, who love to help on the farm as well.

Cows are housed and milked in a tiestall barn across the road from where the re occurred.

“Thank God the re was in a separate barn from where we milk,” Peggy said. “The wind was coming from the west and blowing the smoke east, and there was no damage to the milk barn or our cows in that barn.”

The re started before 6 a.m. Dec. 25 while the sky was still dark. Dean had walked through the barn around 5 a.m. to check everything on his way to milk cows that morning. He began milking, and about 45 minutes later, he saw smoke coming out of the farm’s oldest barn.

“The rst thing I did was call 911, and then we started chasing the animals out,” Dean said.

The nearly 100-year-old barn on Farmdale Farm housed about 30 calves and heifers. A crop of hay was also stored inside. When Peggy and Dean took over the farm in 1982, they converted the stanchion barn into housing for youngstock.

The police and Dean’s brother, Dale, who lives down the road and is also a member of the re department, were the rst to arrive. Another neighbor on the re department, John Pipkorn, came immedi-

ately as well.

“Dean gets up before me, and I was still in bed when he called the house and said, ‘The barn’s on re,’” Peggy said. “I slipped on my boots and Carhartt suit and ran out and helped them. There was one last animal to get out, and everything is a blur after that.”

Twelve re departments came to extinguish the re, the cause of which was determined to be electrical.

“Looking back, we’re grateful that Michael had moved the newborn calves into hutches in our machine shed a couple days before the re,” Peggy said. “It was a good thing we didn’t have to worry about the little ones.”

There were smaller calves in group hutches up against the outside of the barn, and the family tried to take the fence out, but it was frozen solid.

“The calves were so scared, they jumped over the fence, and we just let them go,” Peggy said. “We got all the animals away from the barn safely.”

The Schoessows’ dog was missing but was later found in the old milkhouse, and a couple reghters were able to get her out. No animals were harmed in the re, but the barn was a complete loss. The John Deere tractor parked underneath the barn ran briey after the re with a bit of coaxing, but the cab was destroyed.

Earlier that fall, the Schoessows had built a solar heifer barn, which is where all the animals were moved to sooner than the family was expecting. The Schoessows and those helping them corralled the cattle, and before moving them into the new barn, they cleaned up and swept out the construction debris.

“I’m thankful we had a place to move them to,” Dean said. “The only thing we didn’t have yet was a water hookup, but that came the next day.”

The vet told the Schoessows to keep a close eye on the animals for damage from smoke inhalation, but all the animals ended up being ne, Peggy said.

However, Dean was not feeling well and was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. He had been treated for pneumonia the week before and was not feeling well after breathing in the smoke. He returned to the farm between 11 a.m. and noon while the re was still smoldering. The effects to his health lingered on past Christmas.

“I honestly don’t remember what we originally had planned for that day,” Peggy said. “I know the kids would’ve come over for Christmas.”

Their four children – Kim, Andrew, Matthew and Michael – still came over, but rather than cel-

ebrating Christmas, holiday festivities were postponed as the family cleaned up what they could from the re. Andrew is also a reghter, and he brought friends along to help.

“We didn’t know where to start,” Peggy said.

That day, a news station came and interviewed Dean’s dad. When the reporter asked Peggy if she wanted to say anything, she declined to be on the news but did make a statement.

“I wanted to thank all the neighbors, friends and community for their support to give up their Christmas to help us,” Peggy said. “It was so appreciated.”

Pipkorn slept in his truck that night outside the burned-down barn to make sure there were no more areups.

“John is very devoted to the re department, and we’re very appreciative for him staying here and watching,” Peggy said.

Although Dec. 25, 2013, was far from an ideal Christmas, the Schoess-

ows have embraced positive aspects that resulted from the re. Ventilation in the old barn was not the best, and the re brought about an upgrade in calf housing.

“It was the worst day possible, but we’re looking at the gains from the re like the new heated shop and the new calf facility that were built in its place,” Peggy said.

The new building provided much better ventilation for the farm’s young animals while also speeding up daily chores.

“We gained efciencies with the new buildings,” Peggy said.

“The heated shop has served its purpose as we’ve held three major celebrations there – Dean’s dad’s 90th birthday party, Colton’s rst birthday party and my dad’s 90th birthday party.”

The following Christmas, Kim gave her parents a special gift – a painting of the barn that had burned one year prior – preserving a timeless memory in Farmdale Farm history.

When do you do chores and what chores do you do? I do chores at night because we have stuff to do during the day. I feed salt and minerals to cows, and I throw hay down from the mow so there is hay to feed to the cows.

What is your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is throwing hay down because it’s fun to move it around, and there is a basketball hoop in the upstairs of the barn, so I get to play. My least favorite chore is feeding salt and minerals because when I scoop, it gets stuck sometimes, and it hurts when it gets in the cracks in my hands.

Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My favorite animal is a cow named Angel. Her number is 703. I showed her last year, and she just had a calf a month ago. I like her because she looks good in the show ring.

What do you want to be when you grow up? It depends. I will probably be a farmer, but I also might be a Major League Baseball player.

If you had your own farm, what would it look like? I would have bigger tractors and machinery. I would have a pretty good-sized herd of cows, probably around 100. Most of the rest of my farm would look like our farm.

What is your favorite dairy treat? Muenster cheese and ice cream.

What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the summer? I like to help unload straw and hay. I help put bales down off the pile, and my dad puts them on the rack into the barn.

What is your favorite memory of working or playing on the farm? My favorite memory is unloading straw because it was all of us helping, and it was nice.

When do you do chores and what chores do you do? I do chores when I go to the farm. I scrape poop, clean stuff and feed grain to the calves.

What is your favorite and least favorite chore?

My favorite chore is scraping poop. It’s fun because we have a new scraper. My least favorite chore is feeding calves because when I go in their pen, they always suck on me.

Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My favorite animal is a cow named Snowake. She is a Holstein, and she is my favorite because even though I don’t like calves licking me, cows’ licks feel different. Snowake always licks me, and we can pet her.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Probably a farmer like my dad. Also, maybe a chiropractor. If you had your own farm, what would it look like? I would have a barn that was green and white. There would be Holsteins and maybe some pigs. I would also have a dog.

What is your favorite dairy treat? Ice cream.

What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the summer? Ride in the tractor while chopping and cutting hay.

What is your favorite memory of working or playing on the farm? When we had corn that was 11-12 feet high. The whole eld was that high, and it was cool to see such tall corn. It was taller than the tractor.

Down to dairy Sachs joins family operation as the next generation

EYOTA, Minn. – When CJ Sachs rst started to help on the farm at 5 years old, he could not carry out the day’s chores without ample help. Now, about 20 years later, Sachs remains farming and has mastered his work as a dairy farmer.

Fourth-generation dairy farmer Sachs works full time alongside his parents, Charlie and Carrie Sachs, at Towerview Dairy near Eyota, where they milk 112 cows.

Sachs said he knew he wanted to farm as a career when he was 12 or 13 years old. At that time, farming be-

came more real to him as he did more and more work with the animals and actual machinery.

“When I was little, I was always playing with toy tractors ... and helping on the farm,” Sachs said. “There was really nothing else I wanted to do other than farm.”

His parents, he said, have always known he planned to dairy farm.

“Nobody ever said you had to come back home,” Sachs said. “If you’re going to (though), you’re going to have to work for it. ... You just have to work a little bit harder to show it.”

Over time, Sachs received more tasks and was invited to have more input on decisions. Sachs said those managing their family’s farm have always had their own areas where they took ownership and the lead in joint decision making.

“At the end of the day, we’re all in this,” Sachs said. “We’re all farming, so we have to make sure everyone’s on

board with what we’re doing; otherwise, you’re just going to have a lack of communication and a mess.”

Sachs joined the farm in 2020. He was attending Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar, Iowa, studying dairy herd management, when he was sent home because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Even if it’s a really bad day, a terrible day even, there is always something in the end of the day that makes (farming) worth it,” Sachs said.

Sachs began working for his parents and getting paid small amounts once a month to live on as he helped with their 70 cows. Sachs knew he needed – and wanted – a herd of

Brown Swiss cows of his own. In January 2021, Sachs found his herd of 36 and brought the animals home. The Sachses were able to incorporate the cows into their setup immediately without any expansion.

Bringing his cows home is one of Sachs’ favorite memories.

“Everyone being in the parlor and my friends that were over that night, … (we were) learning all these cows’ names, what they do and their personalities,” he said. “That was a lot of fun.”

Besides cows, Sachs has also brought on more equipment, including

buying three tractors. Sachs said he enjoys owning equipment because he can work on it and modify it in any way he wants. Every tractor he buys gets new headlights, a name sticker in the front window and straight pipes.

“I enjoy making machinery my own and putting my own mark on it,” Sachs said.

Sachs purchased his rst tractor in 2019, an Allis-Chalmers 6070 he named Peaches. Recently, Sachs, who only buys Allis-Chalmers, moved all the family tractors outside, washed them and lined them up for a photo, something he had never done before.

“There’s always going to be orange tractors here,” Sachs said. “We’ve had them for four generations, so it’s kind of something that was always important that we still farm with Allis-Chalmers tractors.”

Though he likes tractors, machinery and spending time in the shop, Sachs is also a cow person.

Sachs has plans for how he would like to see the farm grow and improve. Currently, the Sachses milk in a double-6 herringbone parlor. The family recently purchased a double-8 herringbone parlor in South Dakota and brought it home. Eventually, Sachs would like to install this new equipment and work to make the parlor more comfortable for the cows and farmer alike.

The Sachses have 350 acres of cropland, owned and rented. They grow corn, alfalfa, no-till soybeans and no-till winter rye forage cover crops. Their chopping, no-till planting, spraying and combining are all done by custom operators. They also harvest baleage, which they do themselves. Eventually, Sachs would like to get a full lineup of equipment so he can do all the eldwork. He also would like to acquire more acres for row crops.

When it comes to the cows, Sachs expects slow, internal growth, but he realized in college he does not want a large expansion.

“I learned where I never want to push my operation to be,” he said. “I don’t want to be a big dairy. I’d rather be a small dairy farm and be part of everything on the farm.”
