Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig (center) presents the Wergin Good Farm Neighbor award to the Bolin family — Dave (from le ) and Pam, along with their son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Lynn, and their children, Vance, Judah and Amara — of New Day Dairy Aug. 3 on their farm near Clarksville, Iowa. The award, sponsored by a partnership between the Coali on to Support Iowa’s Farmers and “The Big Show” on WHO Radio, recognizes Iowa livestock farmers.

Iowa dairy family is recognized with statewide award

CLARKSVILLE, Iowa — Not many dairy farm families include community band members, a substitute teacher and a bed and breakfast host. But those are just some of the reasons the Bolin family of New Day Dairy near Clarksville was presented with the Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award Aug. 3.

The award, sponsored by a partnership of the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers and “The Big Show” on WHO Radio, recognizes Iowa livestock farmers. Since its inception 20 years ago, 176 farm families have been honored.

Dave and Pam Bolin, and their son, Dan, and his wife, Lynn, are the rst farmers from Butler County to be recognized with the award. They are the 19th dairy farmers to be selected.

“The nomination happened somehow behind by back,” Dave said. “It was the Butler County Farm Bureau board who did it, and since I’m on the board, I’m not sure how they pulled it off.”

But pull it off they did, submitting the family be-

cause of their history in the community and beyond. While the Bolins have received other awards, this one was special.

“You can’t be a good neighbor if you don’t have good neighbors,” Pam said. “We have good neighbors, and this (award) is important because it was chosen by the people we live next to. It’s pretty humbling.”

Lynn agreed.

“It’s denitely an honor, and we’re thankful,” Lynn said. “But we are denitely not unique in taking great care of animals and the land and being good neighbors. People in Iowa should denitely nominate their farmer neighbors.”

New Day Dairy LLC was formed when Dan and Lynn returned to the farm and a new facility was built in 2015. It features guest facilities attached to the barn where 120 cows are milked with a robotic milking system. Visitors can watch the daily workings of the dairy from windows in what the Bolins call the Guest Barn and learn more about dairying from special opportunities during their stay.

New Day Dairy’s roots trace back to Dave’s great-grandfather, who sold the cows until Dan began milking again at age 13. Pam also grew up in the neighborhood.

It is Dave who serves as a substitute teacher in between his farm duties. Pam works closely with the church youth, and they both play in Clarksville’s band. Dan is the primary operator of the dairy, while Lynn manages the Guest Barn, and she and Dan are also active in the community.

All four have served in agricultural roles beyond the community, and combined with local involvement, their connections have become broad.

Many of those connections were present for the award presentation, which took place at New Day Dairy. Mike Naig, Iowa’s secretary of agriculture, made the presentation, but the audience included people from congressional ofces, local chambers of commerce, the rural electric co-op, FFA chapters, Wartburg College in Waverly, Silos and Smokestacks, and the local grocery store, among others.

WHO radio broadcast “The Big Show” live during the event.

It was Lynn who made sure people with connections to the farm were

among the roughly 125 who gathered. Family members from near and far were in attendance, including her mother and a friend, as well as Minnesotans who had coincidentally booked the Guest Barn for that weekend.

“Because we’re so unique and (the farm) has a cross section of food and tourism, it was fun to see people from various connections see what we do,” Lynn said. “Some people knew each other, but I loved seeing them interact. We were able to show some people around the farm who otherwise wouldn’t have had an opportunity to come.”

Those people, not surprisingly, included neighbors who helped with preparations.

One of the lasting mementos included in the award is a bur oak tree that has been planted in Dan and Lynn’s yard. Its characteristics are durability, good shade, hardworking and long lasting.

Just like a good neighbor.

Paskewitz crowned 65th

Princess Kay of the Milky Way

Rebekka Paskewitz of Browerville, Minnesota, of Todd County, was crowned Princess Kay Aug. 22, 2018, at the Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul, Minnesota. At the event, Paskewitz told the audience she had found a place to call home in dairy and was looking forward to talking with farmers and consumers during her reign as Princess Kay. In attendance were her parents, Alan and Vicki Paskewitz, along with other friends and family. Paskewitz had previously served Todd County as its dairy ambassador and dairy princess. At the time of the coronation, she was studying to be an agriculture educator at South Dakota State University. Today, Paskewitz teaches agriculture at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School.

Progress on a new crop

Mitch Hunter, a scientist for the University of Minnesota, gave an update on Kernza research Aug. 14, 2018, at a eld day in Morris, Minnesota. Kernza, a perennial grain crop related to wheat with large seeds and a deep root system, had been shown to have less of an environmental impact than annual wheat varieties by both reducing numbers of plantings needed and improving soil. During the eld day, Hunter reported that researchers were having success with breeding to increase Kernza seed size and grain yields. They were also

working with General Mills to add Kernza to one of its products and looking into other markets as well. Last year, according to the UMN’s website, the momentum of marketing efforts, along with growing interest in regenerative agriculture and soil, led to Kernza being named by Whole Foods Market as a top 10 food trend in 2022.

New facilities cure old barn problems

In 2018, making repairs and trying to keep things functional in his family’s 132-stall stanchion barn had become a bigger part of Greg Lohr’s day than managing the dairy herd, so he decided to make a change. Lohr, along with his parents, Melvin and Doris, and his four children — Ivan, Hunter, Melina, and Briar — milked 190 cows and raised crops on 750 acres near Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. All four kids were between the ages of 15 and 21 at the time. The family built a new freestall barn with four DeLaval robotic milking systems and moved the herd there in April. By August, Lohr reported seeing increased production, better overall health, better foot health and increased reproductive efciency in the herd. With the new facility, Lohr planned to grow the herd to 230 head.

Wisconsinʼs newest agricultural attraction

The center had been envisioned eight years earlier by Norval Dvorak — 93 years old at the time — who formed a committee of agricultural leaders in the area. Dvorak passed away in 2015 and was not there when his idea came to full fruition, but his vision had begun a movement of others wanting to create an educational center for dairy. The committee raised $12.5 million through donations and received a $5 million grant, allowing for the building of large red barn facility with over 15,000 square feet of space with a wide array of exhibits to teach about various aspects of dairy and agricultural, including a birthing barn that allowed visitors to watch two to ve calves being born each day. The cows were brought to the center daily from nearby Grotegut Dairy Farm, a 2,700-cow dairy owned and operated by the Grotegut family. In 2019, Time magazine voted it one of the 50 coolest places for kids.

50th Iowa Dairy Princess: A dream come true

Kayla Hotvedt was crowned Iowa’s 2003 Dairy Princess among 13 princesses across Iowa. Her reign, which was slated to begin that fall, would involve balancing princess duties with classes as a sophomore at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where she was studying agricultural communications. Hotvedt, the daughter of Dan and Sondra, was raised on her family’s farm near Hesper, Iowa, in Winneshiek County where she was active in both 4-H and FFA. Upon winning the crown, Hotvedt said she was looking forward to promoting and encouraging the consumption of dairy products. She also said that her favorite dairy food was pepper jack cheese.

Cows from Irish Ridge Red and Whites, owned by Vince and Sheri Sexton and their family, were slated to be on display as the showcase herd at the 2013 Minnesota State Fair. The Sextons milked 115 Holsteins — 25% of them Red and Whites or Red and White carriers — on their farm near Millville, Minnesota. The Sextons were asked by the Minnesota Red and White Club to take on the honor and responsibility. This would be only the second year Red and Whites were showcased at the state fair. Vince and Sheri’s daughter, Staci, took on the role of preparing 10 of their animals, training and halter breaking them, so that they would be ready to meet the crowds. She said her family appreciated the opportunity to help educate the public about dairy animals.

Continuing a family tradition

Father and son, Daniel and Rodney Kurth, worked together near Cedar Mills, Minnesota, with Daniel dairy farming and Rodney crop farming and supplying feed for Daniel’s herd of 34 cows. Rodney’s back had begun to give him trouble years before, so by 2009, he needed to stop milking cows. Daniel decided to take over the dairy while Rodney focused on their 212 acres of cropland, and a father-son partnership was born. Daniel also worked part time

Childhood friends, Josh Altendahl and Don Hemmesch Jr., only 18 and 20 years old respectively at the time, began their own dairy operation the summer of 2003 near Albany, Minnesota. They had 10 milking cows and several calves to help start their herd, which they hoped to increase to about 40 milking cows someday. Hemmesch continued to work off the farm until the duo could get the operation running steadily with an increase in production. Up until they started their own dairy, Altendahl worked on his family’s farm near St. Martin, Minnesota, where he had slowly built his own herd of 10. Hemmesch also grew up on a dairy farm, but his family had stopped milking cows about a decade before, and the facility and equipment were sitting idle. Hemmesch and Altendahl joined forces to make repairs, paint, clean and x fences at the Hemmesch farm and moved Altendahl’s herd there so they could launch their dairy partnership. They said they had talked about dairy farming together since they were children.

TridentPulsation™: Stop Hurting Teats

TridentPulsation™ can stop a large percentage of teat end damage made by milking machines. It is the only system with positive pressure fresh air system working with vacuum pressure. Each pulsator has direct positive pressure air connection and controller. This leads to total liner closing every time imitating the way a calf sucks. Additionally, positive air pressure eliminates teat congestion by massaging accumulated blood and fluids out of the teat tissue. This helps stop the machine damage that leads to the spread of staph aureus and other contagious mastitis. Get faster milking and stop the creation of slow quarters.

User selectable rate/ratios and continuous functional monitoring.

The traveling cheese tent

Hofer’s on-the-go business moves 5 tons of cheddar annually

WEST ALLIS, Wis. — David Hofer loves cheese curds. It is a love that began years ago while working concessions as a teenager, but little did Hofer know that one day he would make his living off the curd.

As the owner and operator of Wisconsin Fried Cheese Curds, Hofer is a concessionaire who specializes in selling Wisconsin cheeses. Deep-fried cheese curds, fresh cheese curds and grilled cheese sandwiches are the stars of his business.

“Every time I sell an order of cheese curds, I like to think we are helping support local dairy farmers,” Hofer said. “Our cheese curds are made in Wisconsin, and I often wonder how many dairies contribute milk to make those curds. I’m sure it’s far and wide.”

Wisconsin Fried Cheese Curds is not a brick-and-mortar establishment. Instead, the business travels from festival to festival in the Milwaukee area from April through October. With help from his wife, Sanita, and twin daughters, Elza and Elina, Hofer does 60 to 65 shows every year.

During his high school and college days, Hofer worked in concessions at a racetrack in his hometown of West Salem. He later got a job in the retail industry. When visiting his uncle in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Hofer had an idea that would ultimately change his life. He wanted to join the mile-long strip of vendors at the city’s annual hot air balloon festival, and the product he wished to sell was cheese curds. In 2008, he took vacation from his fulltime job and did just that.

Selling cheese curds was a gig that would turn full time when Hofer lost his day job. He and his wife had just bought a house and were new parents with two kids to look after and no income to support their family.

“I thought, ‘What are we going to do?’” Hofer said. “I told my wife, ‘We have this equipment; let’s see what happens.’”

Hofer started knocking on doors, sending emails and making calls to festivals in the greater Milwaukee area. His rst year in business, Hofer did 15 shows, and his sales surpassed what he made in one year of working retail.

“That’s when I knew it was a go,” Hofer said.

Every year, he continued to add more shows. Now in its 15th year of business, Wisconsin Fried Cheese Curds sets up shop at two county fairs — Kenosha and Ozaukee — while oneday community events and festivals ll the rest of the calendar.

Hofer also sells curds at a couple Christmas parades if weather permits and has done events such as weddings, company picnics and graduation parties. Hofer and his family can have up to three stands running at once in various locations.

“I love being at the fair and seeing 4-H kids who are showing there come up and get curds from us,” Hofer said. “That puts a smile on my face. They’re so enthusiastic about their projects, and I hope that continues for the rest of their life.”

Hofer did the balloon festival for ve years, attracting many Midwesterners to his stand. Now, he stays much closer to home, serving the Milwaukee area primarily.

When he rst started, Hofer’s menu was 15 items long. It became a lot to travel with, so he whittled the menu down to six items, including beverages.

“Fried cheese curds are our No. 1 seller,” Hofer said.

At his stand, Hofer sells fresh white cheddar cheese curds, fried white cheddar curds and mild cheddar grilled cheese sandwiches. The cheese curds come from Ellsworth Creamery. In a typical year, Hofer goes through 4 to 5 tons of cheese to make curds.

Application window open for MDA Livestock Investment Grants

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications for the Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation Livestock Investment Grant. This annual grant opportunity is open to Minnesota livestock farmers and ranchers looking to improve their operations, supporting long-term development in Minnesota’s $8 billion livestock industry.

The MDA anticipates awarding approximately $1.5 million in scal year 2024 for Livestock Investment Grants using a competitive review process. Grant funds are available for equipment purchases and physical improvements used to help start, improve or expand livestock operations in Minnesota. Reimbursable investments include but are not limited to buildings or facilities for producing livestock, watering systems, fencing, feed equipment and waste management equipment used for raising livestock.

All principal operators of livestock farms in Minnesota are invited to apply, including those who have received grants in the past. Only one application will be accepted per farm. Preference will be given to applicants or farms that have not previously been awarded a grant.

Applicants may apply for up to 10% of their project’s total cost, with a minimum expense of $4,000 and a maximum expense of $250,000. Grant awards can range in size from $400 to $25,000. Only expenses incurred after the grant contract has been signed by all parties are eligible for reimbursement. The MDA expects to have contracts to grantees by early 2024.

Applications for the grant will be accepted until 4 p.m. Oct. 12. Applicants must use the MDA’s online application portal to apply for the grant.

Additional information can be found on the AGRI Livestock Investment Grant webpage.

“Wisconsin takes its cheesemaking very seriously,” Hofer said. “It makes me proud to sell it and be a part of that.”

Real Wisconsin butter completes his grilled cheese sandwiches that also feature another local favorite: Patrick Cudahy bacon.

Supporting the local economy is important to Hofer. Keeping fellow Wisconsinites employed is a key part of his company’s mission.

“We want to keep emphasis on things made and produced in Wisconsin, and I have kept a conscious effort to make products that are from this state,” Hofer said. “Promoting Wisconsin products and foods is the epitome of Wisconsin Fried Cheese Curds. I like to think we’re doing our small contribution to help keep people employed. But it’s not just us. It’s also the customers who buy our product.”

Much of Hofer’s packaging is also made in Wisconsin, which is a component he said many people do not think

about when buying products.

In keeping up appearances, the company’s lingo reects all things cheese. For example, Hofer signs his emails with “Cheesy regards” and refers to himself as “The big cheese” in his signature. The word, “Moooo!” followed by “Luckily, we speak cow. That means thank you!” can be found on the website. A cow is the center of the company logo.

“We like to keep things lively and fun-sounding,” Hofer said.

Hofer is hoping to expand his business in the future.

“I don’t want to necessarily franchise, but I would like to be able to sell more cheese curds and grilled cheeses,” Hofer said. “There are so many festivals in the Milwaukee area that we don’t have the manpower or equipment to do so right now. Two Prairie Farms cheese plants were among the top winners of the American Cheese Society Judging and Competition, the largest event of its kind for American-made cheeses. Awards for the 40th anniversary of the competition were announced July 19 at the annual American Cheese Society Conference in Des Moines, Iowa. This year’s competition featured cheeses from nearly 200 companies with over 1,400 entries competing in 120 categories and tested by an esteemed panel of 30 judges.

After the votes were tallied, Prairie Farms’ Luana Cheese Plant in Luana, Iowa, came away with a pair of winners for ACS judges, which included rst place in the light/lite and reduced fat cheeses category with Prairie Farms Neufchatel and third place in the Emmental-style with eye formation made from cow’s milk category with Prairie Farms Swiss cheese.

In the blue mold cheeses category, the Caves of Faribault plant in Faribault, Minnesota, received a bronze nish with this delicious creation: AmaGorg® Gorgonzola cheese.

When do you do chores and what chores do you do? Every morning, before school, I milk cows and feed calves because I do on-the-job training. I milk cows in the evening too. I also take care of my 13 chickens.

What is your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is feeding the calves because I get to be the one who makes sure they stay healthy and live a good life so our farm can continue to grow

with healthy cows. My least favorite chore is having to clean the manure out from the cow and calf pens since it is such a long and tedious job. I have to take apart all the pens, move calves, power wash and sanitize all of the pens before moving calves back into the clean huts.

Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My favorite animals on the farm are the cows. I like just being around them and caring for them. There are a few cows that let me lie with them in the

freestall barn or just walk up to them and hang around them. What do you want to be when you grow up? I’m not sure as to what I would like to do for sure. After I graduate next year, my plan is to stay working on the farm and see where that takes me later in the years. If I don’t stick with farming, I would like to do something else with farm animals. If you had your own farm, what would it look like? If I were to have my own farm, I wouldn’t change things like we have now. I would like to have

more animals like horses, goats and donkeys since I’m not allowed to bring any of those animals home to the farm.

What is your favorite dairy treat? My favorite dairy treat would probably be ice cream, denitely monster cookie avored or anything with caramel in it.

What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the summer? My favorite thing to do on the farm in the summer is cutting hay. My job during hay is cutting all the hay down and merging it all. When I’m done cutting and after I nish merging all the elds, I help haul boxes until we are nished.

What is your favorite memory of working or playing on the farm? My favorite memory is from working on the farm for the last ve years. It would most denitely be how close of a bond I have created with my family, along with my uncle and cousin. I’m the only girl on the farm, and those boys have taught me everything I need to know along with me teaching myself a lot of things while being on the farm.

When do you do chores and what chores do you do? I milk morning and night. I also help with eldwork, feeding cows, cleaning the freestall barn and xing machinery.

What is your favorite and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is driving the tractors. My least favorite chore is cleaning out the calf huts because it’s boring.

Do you have a favorite animal on your farm? My dogs because they are fun to play with.

What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to farm.

If you had your own farm, what would it look like? I would like to use bigger machinery and milk more cows.

What is your favorite dairy treat? Vanilla ice cream.

What is your favorite thing to do on the farm during the summer? Ride my dirt bike on the track that I made in the pasture.

What is your favorite memory of working or playing on the farm? Learning how to drive the tractors.
