A disappointing discovery Bears tear through Peterson’s corn crop By Mark Klaphake mark.k@dairystar.com

WILLOW RIVER, Minn. – Like many farmers, Mike Peterson has been concerned about his crops all year. Drier than normal conditions and an abnormally hot summer has stressed the plants and limited their growth. While there was hope of a decent corn yield, another blow to the season was the discovery of bears tearing through the elds, damaging them beyond repair. Because of abnormally high Mike Peterson bear visits to his Willow River, Minn. elds, much of the corn is laying on the ground and unable to be harvested. “We’ve always had bear trouble. But this is the worst damage we’ve seen,” Peterson said. “It’s almost twice as bad than a normal year.” Peterson milks 300 cows with his dad, Stanley, and brother, Matt, in Pine County near Willow River. He estimates that only a few of the 40 corn elds, that range from 1 acre to 20 acres, have not had black bears visit. “It’s depressing,” Peterson said. “A year like this, you need every ton

The Petersons recently started chopping corn silage, and where the bears have been, the harvest is light. “If you come along with the chopper, you pick up 5% of where there’s bear damage,” Peterson said. “It’s brown and then it’s wet. It’s knocked over in every which direction.” About a month ago, Peterson realized the bears were back in the elds and contacted the game warden who gave him the approval to shoot the bears because of the substantial crop damage. They have since shot a handful of bears but by no means eradicated the problem. “It’s usually late evening when they come,” Peterson said. “You can’t

see them in the woods. You can’t see them in the corn elds. That’s the problem.” During the day, the bears are usually in old pastures with tall reed canary grass; at night, they take to the elds. With the Petersons’ OK and the game warden’s permission, nuisance bear licenses have been extended to anyone who has been interested. “Two have hunted a couple times,” Peterson said. “They saw one but haven’t shot. Some other hunters say they are coming.” Turn to PETERSON | Page 4

The damage the Petersons have is extensive. In some areas, most of the corn is laying on the soil 24 rows wide and more than that distance long. “They sit down, and they pull in as far as they can reach,” Peterson said. “You’ll have 8- to 10-foot circles pulled into a shock. They eat the cobs. If they don’t like it, they knock down another pile. They keep going until they nd something they like to eat. Then they move over and do it again.” Peterson speculates that because of the dry summer, the bears’ normal menu, acorns and berries, are limited and leave the bears to search elsewhere for food. “This year, neighbors have had them in the yards, the garbage cans,” Peterson said. “There’s nothing else to eat.” Peterson’s dad recently purchased a drone to get a better view of the

damage and to hopefully nd the path of where the bears enter and exit to assist the hunters in getting their game. “Once they get on the corn, it’s hard to bait them with anything else,” Peterson said. “They like that sweet corn, milky stage.” Peterson said the bears, from cubs to mature size, weigh anywhere from 50-400 pounds. “The biggest we got was 345 pounds, a normal year that would’ve been 400 pounds,” Peterson said. “I’ve got a couple, my brother has a couple and uncle has a couple, all this year. If they’re young, we’ll eat it. If not, I’ll give it away.” Peterson hopes continued hunting will limit the bears and increase harvest. “They’re hungry,” he said. “If there’s corn, there’s a problem.”

“It was a total shock. I didn’t know it was coming,” Klossner said. “I heard (the announcer) say something about presenting an award. I thought, ‘OK, I’ll probably be taking a picture of that person.’ And then she said something about taking pictures. And it made me think, ‘Huh, I think I know what is going on here.’” Minnesota Milk Producers Association presented Klossner, who is from Lafayette, with the Bruce Cottington Award during the 4-H dairy show at this year’s Minnesota State Fair. Ruth Klossner takes a picture of a 4-H dairy exhibitor during the 2006 Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul, Minnesota. of her last few months working for the University of Minnesota Extension. “I was told to show up at this time, at this place and take the pictures,” Klossner said. “They gave me the rolls of lm, I put them in my camera, I took the pictures, they took the lm and I walked away. I never saw the pictures.” Klossner never thought anymore about her short stint as the state fair photographer; however, the following summer, she received a call to do it again. Within that year, Klossner had signicantly grown her wedding photography business with most weekends already booked. “Luckily the state fair weekend wasn’t,” Klossner said. “It was pure chance. From that year on, I kept my state fair weekend open to take pictures of the 4-H kids.” Most days are fairly long, sometimes lasting up to 18 hours. In the early years, Klossner was in charge of photographing all species winners except beef. After dropping pigs and rabbits due to conicts, Klossner’s duties now include taking pictures of winners in dairy, goat, sheep, poultry, dairy showcase, llama, dairy judging and livestock judging. Photography has changed for Klossner since 1983. For several years, an extension staff member processed the pictures on the fairgrounds. After that person left, Klossner converted a bathroom in the dairy ofce of the dairy barn into a darkroom using the equipment she had from home. For many years, she recruited two

local boys to help process the photos while she took pictures in the show ring. They continued producing those black and white photos until 1996, when Klossner almost missed the fair due to health reasons but still made it back for the dairy show to continue her streak. “They didn’t have the darkroom with the kids that year so they switched to color lm,” Klossner said. In 2003, Klossner switched to a digital camera, and in 2007, pictures were no longer printed out for 4-H extension agents to take home; rather, they were put on the website to download. “It’s a lot less time consuming, but you still have to get the right name with the right picture and hopefully they match up,” Klossner said. While photography has changed, the reason that brings Klossner back to the state fair each year has not. “I’m doing it for the kids,” she said. “I went through 4-H and have a scrapbook full of memories and news clipping. Kids now deserve those memories too.” Her photography experience started when she was an extension agent. “When I was working with 4-H kids, we would try to get the newspaper to cover 4-H events, and they didn’t want to bother to come to the events,” she said. “So, I gured out if I take the pictures and give them pictures, they’ll publish them.” When Klossner became part of Turn to KLOSSNER | Page 8

ConƟnued from KLOSSNER | Page 7 the media, writing for the LafayetteNicollet Ledger from 1984 until 2011, she made sure to highlight youth in agricultural organizations. “I probably gave 4-H more publicity than any newspaper in the state simply because I would go to 4-H events and write about them where a lot of newspapers didn’t give them the time of day,” Klossner said. “4-H meant so much to me.” Klossner grew up on a dairy farm north of New Ulm in Nicollet County. After working hard one summer, she convinced her parents to buy her a registered Holstein calf named Delight. “She did not delight,” Klossner said. “She was no better than our grades, type-wise.” Despite Delight’s shortcomings,

her rst calf named Princess won the 4-H state fair dairy show, the same year Klossner’s mother passed away and her family sold their cows. While that sale meant Klossner’s dream of dairy farming diminished, she kept involving herself with dairy over the years. In addition to Klossner’s duties taking pictures at the state fair, she is the Nicollet County Fairy dairy show announcer, is a past member of the Nicollet County Fair Board, was a county extension educator for 13 years, served as secretary and president of the Nicollet County Holstein Association, co-chaperoned the Minnesota group attending the National 4-H Dairy Conference and took time to be the conference photographer, and has been the secretary of the New

Ulm Farm City Hub Club ag promotion group for the last 10 years. Plus, she holds a Guinness World Record for the largest collection of cow-related items, which currently numbers 19,721 pieces and counting. While she loves all her involvements, she looks forward to the state fair the most. Each years, Klossner is usually at the fair 10 of the 12 days. “I’m a fair junkie,” she said. “I love fairs. My family thinks I’m crazy. My sister and brother don’t like crowds. I don’t even see the crowds.” Klossner is focused on the kids instead. “It’s just fun to see the kids win the awards,” she said. And this year, the kids were able to see her win an award too.

Get to know Zach Brand of Rushford, Minnesota

Zach Brand Parents: Bonnie and Dennis Brand Employer: Nick Agrimson, Metz’s Hart-Land Dairy and Creamery Rushford, Minnesota Fillmore County 190 cows Junior at Rushford High School 17 years old Tell us your favorite experience of Zach helping with chores. He’s a really good guy and fun to have around the farm. I do not have a specic time that has been my favorite, but it is fun to joke around with Zach because he likes John Deere, and I like Internationals. What qualities does Zach have that benet the farm? He is very reliable. We can always count on him showing up. And he is a really hard worker. He does what he is told to do. If we send him on a job, we do not have to worry about it. It will get done. What are your responsibilities on the farm? I do milking, mixing feed, eld work, bedding and anything else that needs to be done. During the summer, I work during the day through evening milking, which nishes at 7:30. During the school year, I can only work from 4-7:30 p.m. during the weekdays. I also work almost every weekend. When did you begin helping on the farm? I started working here June 2018. I like working with cows, enjoy milking and the people I work with. My family sold its dairy herd several years ago so I have a dairy background. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I make sure my school work is done before I do any extra work on the farm. If I get behind on school, it becomes a priority. I do not do any extracurricular activities, but I also help my brother on his beef farm and custom baling, and I raise my own feeder calves.

KRISTA KUZMA/DAIRY STAR

Zach Brand (leŌ) and his boss, Nick Agrimson, stand in the freestall barn at Metz’s Hart-Land Dairy and Creamery near Rushford, Minnesota. The 17-year-old high school junior began working at the 190-cow dairy in June 2018. How has working on the farm shaped your character? It has made me a hard worker. I also respect my employer by doing what I am asked to do and take time to get it done right. What do you love most about farm life? I like doing the work – milking, eld work and working with the cows.

What is your favorite chore and least favorite chore? My favorite chore is feeding hay to the calves because I like to see our 4-H calves. When our 4-H calves are young, we are responsible for feeding them milk and doing everything related to their care. I also like taking care of the horses when my grandparents are in Arizona for the winter. My least favorite chore is watering the bull calves because there’s nothing to do while you’re waiting. Standing there with the hose is boring.

“I love using the 1-1/4” fiberglass rods for putting up electric fences. Using the swivel connectors for bracing corners is fast, super easy, economical, and doesn’t require expensive machinery to make it this easy! Makes for a nice looking and solid fence!” Jordan Meyer, Caledonia, MN Electric Fence Post

“We installed freestalls and gates from TJ Fencing after seeing how reasonably priced they are compared to other options. I will never install a steel post again either after using their posts which will never rust. I really like the products I have from TJ Fencing and plan to put more of their freestalls in my next barn”
