Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase awards over $60,000

Stearns County youth bring home top spots

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. —

Stearns County youth captured the top three spots at the Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase for their dairy proj-

ect successes Aug. 25 at the conclusion of the Minnesota State Fair 4-H Livestock Encampment.

The top spot, with a $4,500 award, went to a Stearns County 4-H member Tyler Ratka. Ratka is the son of Kevin and Kathy Ratka of Cold Spring. Ratka’s sister, Allison, was named a Rising Star. The Ratka siblings raise show heifers on the family’s acreage, while their milking cows reside on the

McAndrews dairy near Sauk Centre.

A brother-sister duo from Melrose earned more than $8,000. Dan Frericks was awarded $4,200 as the second-place winner in the annual Minnesota 4-H Dairy Showcase, while his sister, Monika, received a $3,900 check for placing third.

“I am so grateful for businesses who lend support to the youth of the dairy industry,” Dan said. “I think the

donors’ support rewards kids for how hard they work, and that’s a wonderful thing.”

The Frericks are the children of Glen and Sadie Frericks. The siblings led the group of Stearns County dairy project members who captured the largest percentage of the awards.

A balance between tradition, progression

Darren McKinney made the decision to upgrade his dairy farm in Winthrop, Minnesota, and was determined to keep the cows on pasture. At the time, McKinney said that if he could not keep the cows on pasture, he would not keep farming. After researching and talking with others, he found a way to get the best of both worlds. In 2016 a robot was installed that exited to a pasture or free ow barn. If cows went into the barn they could go to the pasture through a guided system. This part of the system guided them either straight to the pasture or to the robot if they had not been milked in a while.

Champions drink milk

Coach Carl Fruechte and the other coaching staff at Caledonia schools in Minnesota valued their players’ health and backed it up by providing chocolate milk for them. After games and practice the athletes were able to retrieve a carton from the coaches’ mini fridge. At rst Fruechte could only offer milk to the high school players. That was until the booster club donated money to install a larger fridge so they could then supply milk to seventh grader students and up. In future years the school was hoping to install a bulk dispenser, so the players were not limited to 8 ounces and to cut back on waste.

Rohlfs thrives despite childhood farm accident

John Rohlfs from Eden, Wisconsin, did not let a tragic incident dene his future in dairy. At the age of 3 Rohlfs lost an arm in a farm accident at his parents’ farm that had been in the family since 1896. By age 23 Rohlfs bought the farm and then continued to farm it with his sister and brother-in-law, Julie and Tim

Narges. Together they milked 90 cows and farmed close to 200 acres. Growing up, Rohlfs was active in baseball, football and basketball, where he played as the point guard because he was a good ball handler.

Evers, Baldwin visit organic dairy

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers and U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin visited Rod and Dan Gearing’s farm, Oakdale Farm, Aug. 21 in Merrillan, Wisconsin. The visit was arranged by Organic Valley Cooperative, which hosted the Farm Discovery Tour. The main goal of the day was to have a discussion about agriculture. Oakdale farm was established by Gearing’s grandpa, who built the barn in 1915. It was still being used by the current generation. During the tour Evers and Baldwin were told about the organic process and certication from Doran Holm, then a regional pool manager for Organic Valley Cooperative.

Making his farm more energy efficient

Mitch Breunig completed an energy audit on his farm before hosting a tour at his dairy near Sauk City, Wisconsin. The farm, Mystic Valley Dairy, is owned by Breunig, his brother, Marty, and mom, Jeannette. Together the family was milking 420 cows and looking for ways to conserve energy after a review of the audit results. The Breunigs worked to improve the areas that pulled the most energy, which included the lights, pumps in the parlor and fans in the freestall barn. Just by switching the lights to LEDs, Breunig was told he should save around $800 a month.

Dancing, scaring, splashing

Gene Gatewood and his family from Willmar, Minnesota, enjoyed welcoming people out to their farm to enjoy attractions on the farm. Past activities visitors could enjoy included a dance in the hayloft, a

haunted event for their church and local community, and a water slide made from an old grain elevator. The Gatewood family milked 66 cows in a tiestall barn, where the idea for the activities was born. Throughout the family’s time together milking they had time to iron out the details. The rst dance was planned and organized within a two-week time frame when the loft was empty and before the family began to ll it with bales.

A twist of fate

Rich Loerzel’s farm, built in Richville, Minnesota, by his parents, Tom and Mae, was devastated by a tornado that swept through in early September. The tornado was classied as a F2 with winds that reached up to 120 mph, causing the family to lose at least 14 cows. Other losses were buildings, silos and equipment. The tornado struck at 3:30 p.m., when Rich normally would have been doing chores. Luckily, he was watching a baseball game and was late for chores. The family said they were grateful for all of the generosity they received from the community.

Sabolik leaves engineering career for family operation

After receiving an agriculture engineering degree, Greg Sabolik from Kensington, Minnesota, knew farming was what he wanted to do. About 18 months after graduating, Sabolik returned home to buy the dairy farm owned by his parents, Arlen and Ruby. Both encouraged him to reconsider his job in engineering due to the better working conditions. However, Sabolik said he knew he would not be happy until was able to get his hands dirty. He bought the 39 cows from his parents and slowly upgraded the farm to make it his own. The rst upgrade was the addition of a total mixed ration mixer.

DAN FRERICKS, STEARNS COUNTY 4 H MEMBER

At the showcase, twenty-ve winners were named. 4-H dairy youth from ninth grade through their nal 4-H year are ranked and receive corresponding awards. The smallest award is $1,200. Another 10 members in sixth through eighth grades received recognition and $500 each as Rising Stars in the program.

The showcase recognizes youth among the state fair’s 4-H exhibitors who have compiled points through involvement and success in the dairy project throughout the year, and who complete a leadership prole. The program is meant to parallel the 4-H livestock auction that gives exhibitors of market animals a chance to receive money from 4-H supporters.

In addition to the top three placings, ve other Stearns County members were recognized with monetary awards, three among the 25 ranked winners and two as Rising Stars.

Three other sibling duos were also among the showcase winners. Hannah and Kayla Visser of McLeod County placed fth and 14th, respectively, while Ashley and Emily Mellgren of Wabasha County and Isaac and Molly Albers of Rice County were named Rising Stars.

Showcase honorees are notied they are among the winners before the recognition ceremony. However, their rank within the 25 spots was revealed, from lowest to highest, as the recognition program progressed. When announcements of the nal three spots remained, the Frericks siblings and Tyler Ratka were in suspense.

“My thoughts were something along the lines of, ‘My sister better not beat me,’ and that Stearns County did very well,” Dan said.

Monika said the siblings are very supportive of one another.

“My siblings and I are very competitive, but not with each other,” she said.

“We enjoy seeing each other succeed and work together to be our

best.”

While showcase points are easier for the 4-H members to accumulate by participating in multiple dairy activities, Monika said that is not why she is involved.

“I love project bowl, dairy judging, showing and dairy interviews,” she said. “I would do it all even without a showcase, but it’s an honor to be recognized.”

Growing community leaders

Bauer family embraces 4-H membership

MARSHFIELD, Wis. — Becky Bauer dedicates much of her time to growing a crop she considers every bit as important as the ones raised on her family’s dairy farm. For the past 12 years she has served as the general leader of the Golden Glow 4-H Club in Wood County, raising future community leaders.

“It’s important to get kids involved, to teach them to give back to their community,” Becky said.

Steve and Becky Bauer and their children — Brittany, Tony, Zack, Courtney and Jeremy — milk 103 cows on their dairy farm near Marsheld. Brittany’s ancé, Carter Grove, also helps out on the farm and serves as an adult volunteer in the Bauers’ 4-H club.

The Golden Glow 4-H Club is the largest in Wood County, with 120 members who are geographically spread across the county and into Clark and Portage Counties.

While many clubs have witnessed a decrease in active members in recent years,

Becky said their club has continued to grow, with many large families among the membership rolls.

Steve credits the club’s vibrance largely to Becky’s tenacity through the coronavirus pandemic.

“I did drive-thru meetings in the parking lot to keep the club going and members engaged throughout the pandemic,” Becky said. “We had separate tables. They would get a snack, a community service, a project for them to pick up — they got everything they would have at a regular meeting.”

The Bauers rst became members of the Golden Glow 4-H Club when Brittany was old enough to join as a cloverbud, but the club has family ties for Becky. Her parents, Mark and Kathy Binder, met as members of the club and recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary.

Brittany is beginning her third year at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls studying agriculture education.

“I really embraced 4-H and it led me to choose to go to school for agricultural education, to become a teacher and teach kids about ag,” Brittany said. “4-H had a major impact on my social skills, as I was involved in so many different activities.”

When her own 4-H days ended, Brittany began serving

as an adult volunteer.

“I got involved in the Wood County (Youth) Llama Project and showing llamas really brought out some lead-

ership skills for me,” Brittany said. “Now I’m the youth educator for the Wood County (Youth) Llama Project and the assistant superintendent for ex-

Fair.”

With Becky’s long tenure as the club’s general leader, all the Bauer children followed in their sister’s footsteps, with membership beginning in kindergarten.

“They’ve been tagging along since they were babies,” Becky said. “They’ve never really just been 4-H members. For some families, 4-H is just once a month. But these guys are automatic volunteers — they got right into the nittygritty, the planning and organizing.”

Steve and Becky recognize how those years of service have molded their children.

“They’re the rst ones to jump in if a kid needs help with something,” Becky said. “They may not realize it or see it, but I do — as both a leader and a mom.”

4-H involvement has helped Tony and Zack, both high school seniors, nd their areas of interest.

“Wherever I can connect the farm and 4-H, that’s what I’m interested in,” Tony said. “Mostly crops and agronomy are what I’m interested in.”

Zack has discovered a penchant for entrepreneurship through his 4-H projects.

“Brittany inuenced me into showing lots of animals,” Zack said. “I still show poultry. This year I hatched a few out from birds I had raised last year. I have learned a lot about raising a lot of different kinds of animals through 4-H.”

The Bauer children have all embraced the swine project, raising pigs each year to exhibit at the fair and show in the market sale. They purchase their pigs from other 4-H families in the area.

“I like the pigs, probably better than people,” Courtney said. “We get them when they’re a couple of months old and raise them, train them to walk and get ready for the fair.”

Jeremy has followed along with his older siblings as well.

“I took chickens and did crops one year, too, but I like the pigs as much as anything,” Jeremy said.

Zack was introduced to making maple syrup by the Bauer’s neighbor, Mark

Cournoyer, during the pandemic. Cournoyer is the ag instructor at the School District of Auburndale. Maple syrup has turned that into an area of entrepreneurial interest that Jeremy has also taken an interest in as well.

“I’ve paid off everything I’ve done, but I’ve never made a dollar,” Zack said. “This year I started working with another 4-H kid on the syrup.”

Becky said her children working with other kids and networking is a benet her children do not realize.

While project learning is important to Becky, she said the most important thing she wants her 4-H members to learn is the value of volunteerism and embracing community service.

“Our club has a require-

ment of community service to exhibit at the fair,” Becky said.

“Opportunities we provide include working at the Rotary Winter Wonderland, Toys for Tots, Adopt-A-Highway and playing bingo and taking petting zoos to local nursing homes.”

While she did not realize the full scope of what she was doing at the time, Brittany said one community service project has impacted her as an adult.

“We used to do a program called Nutrition on Weekends,” Brittany said. “It didn’t hit me until I was older — we were making meals for a kid who might not have gotten fed at home on the weekends. That made a huge difference to those kids.”

Besides community ser-

vice, the club also requires members to give a demonstration or talk each year.

“I tell my families, these demonstrations aren’t meant to traumatize the kids,” Becky said. “It’s to get them comfortable standing up in front of a group, talking. So many people can’t do that nowadays.”

While they may not immediately see the benets, Becky said she feels secure that as adults they will value the experiences.

“When they get older they begin to realize the impact they can make in their communities,” Becky said. “That is why we really push community involvement — we want them to focus on the world around them, not just themselves.”
