Learning livestock behavior

Farm Bureau, UW Extension host livestock training for emergency response personnel

STRATFORD, Wis. – There are few times more stressful for a dairy farmer than when an animal is involved in a dangerous situation that is out of the farmer’s control. That stress can be compounded by emergency response personnel with limited knowledge of large livestock behavior and no understanding of how to help.

Helping remedy that situation was the goal of the Agriculture Incident Field Training Sept. 7 at the University of Wisconsin Marsheld Agricultural Research Station in Stratford. The training was sponsored by the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation District 8.

Law enforcement, reghters and other emergency response personnel gathered to learn more about normal and high-stress behavior of livestock animals. The sessions were led by UW Extension agricultural educators Sandy Stuttgen and Heather Schlesser.

Schlesser said the behavior of livestock differs based on the situation.

“Animals that are involved in an emergency situation, like an accident or a tip, are very stressed,” Schlesser said. “Understanding that and having a plan developed and in place for dealing with those types of incidents before

they happen is crucial.”

Stuttgen agreed and said a plan should include experts to contact in case of an emergency.

“Make contact with local veterinarians so that you have that network created before you have need of it in an emergency,” Stuttgen said. “There are some areas of Wisconsin where we don’t have as many large animal practitioners that might be available to serve on emergency response teams.”

Making that contact ahead of time will help emergency response personnel better handle the tough decisions that might need to be made, Stuttgen said.

“When it comes to needing to euthanize an animal on a scene, you really should get a veterinarian involved as soon as possible and let that person make that decision,” Stuttgen said. “You and I have really no concept of what the true value of that animal is in terms of dollars and cents or the emotional value. It is amazing what some people will pay to x. With today’s veterinary technology, there might be an outside chance that an animal with a really bad broken leg, that years ago would have required euthanasia, might now be saved.”

Stuttgen also said insurance must be taken into consideration.

“Sometimes the insurance company will make a payout if a veterinarian made the decision to euthanize versus a layperson,” Stuttgen said.

Schlesser gave those in attendance advice on handling cattle.

“Cows are prey animals, and any prey animal has about a 300-degree eld of vision with (a) blind spot directly behind them,” Schlesser said. “The ight zone for dairy cattle are typically small because they have been handled and been around people a lot. The more animals are handled, the smaller their ight zone gets. We use that ight zone to move our animals.”

Schlesser said to think of the shoulder area of the livestock as their pivot point or their steering wheel.

“If you want an animal to move backward, approach them from the front; to get the animal to move forward, approach them from the rear,” Schlesser said. “When I get into that ight zone, the animal will move in the direction that is away from me.”

Schlesser demonstrated using her arms to increase the size of her presence, making it easier to move the cattle. Stuttgen said zigzagging behind the animal to appear in both sides of their blind spot will help keep them headed in the desired direction.

While some emergency situations happen off the farm, often times those situations requiring emergency personnel that involve livestock happen on the farm, such as barn res and structure collapses.

Because of that likelihood, Kyle Koshalek said emergency response personnel and farmers must work together to create emergency response plans and can do so by using technology.

Koshalek is the project manager for the National Farm Medicine Center’s Farm Mapping to Assist, Protect and Prepare Emergency Responders project.

“Farms are very complex,” Koshalek said. “They are dangerous and always changing. What you see on one farm is not necessarily what you will see at another. What you see at a particular farm one day is not necessarily what you will see at that same farm another day. We always say that when you have seen one farm, you have seen one farm.”

Koshalek listed large animals as potential on-farm hazards in addition to other hazards such as chemicals, fuels, conned spaces and lagoons, just to name a few.

Because of the differences from farm to farm and situation to situation, Koshalek stressed the importance of knowing the layout of a farm prior to an emergency situation to help ensure the safety of all involved.

“The most important thing is to keep yourself and everyone else safe,” Koshalek said. “The more information you can have going in to the situation, the safer you will be able to keep everyone.”

Koshalek said Farm MAPPER, an online tool, is a good way for farmers and emergency response personnel to be proactive at beginning the process of completing an on-farm emergency response plan.

“With so many people having such limited knowledge of modern-day, working farms and of how to handle large production livestock, having these response plans in place before an emergency situation presents itself can save a lot of time and hopefully a lot of additional stress,” Stuttgen said.

Support during their darkest hour

Friends, neighbors help Kenealys with harvest

CADOTT, Wis. – Jeff and Trista Kenealy have responded to loss and struggle in the agricultural community several times by giving of themselves. Recently, the couple found themselves on the receiving end when friends and neighbors pitched in to lend a helping hand.

“We did the same thing for a family that suffered a barn re a couple years ago,” Jeff said. “It is just what you do. You help out people that need the help.”

The tables turned suddenly for the Kenealy family when Jeff’s father, John, passed away suddenly from a heart attack the evening of July 25.

“Dad had been working all day at raking rock,” Jeff said of that Monday. “We were getting ready to start third crop hay pretty soon. We still had some rock to pick and waterways to seed down.”

The Kenealys milk 500 cows on their Chippewa Coun-

ty dairy farm near Cadott with their sons, Delton and Timothy.

Upon hearing the news of the loss the Kenealy family suffered, friends and neighbors sprung to action to remove the burden of making the third crop of hay from the Kenealys’ shoulders.

Steve Mayer, of Tilden, Taylor Straschinske and John Backhaus, both of Boyd, stepped in to take hold of the reins, orchestrating a plan to harvest the Kenealys’ haylage and take care of other imminent jobs that needed tending to.

“I was just in shock that night; I didn’t even know what to think or do,” Jeff said.

“These guys just stepped in and took over. They coordinated and took care of everything.”

Backhaus milks 300 cows 5 miles from the Kenealys’ farm. He said he and Jeff have been close friends for nearly 20 years.

“Neither of us has a brother, so we kind of ll that void for each other,” Backhaus said.

“We have such a strong community. People still do those

old-fashioned things and help their neighbors when it is needed.”

Backhaus took it upon himself to complete work that had been started on a damaged waterway. Backhaus seeded the waterway and rolled it, and with the help of some of his

employees, they installed environmental mats to nish the project.

During a typical hay crop, the Kenealys would have a crew of six to eight people working on the harvest. During the week following John’s death, Trista estimates some-

times as many as 20 people were on the farm.

“I’m sure there are people who were here that we might not have even realized,” Trista said. “We had so much to think

about and take care of, just being with family and coming to terms with losing John.”

Coming to the aid of the Kenealy family, Mahr Brothers, of Stanley, and Romanowski Corporation, of Gilman, brought additional equipment to expedite the process of harvesting the hay.

Jeff said he lost count of all the equipment and all the people that were on hand to help.

“There were two choppers, four mergers and lots of extra tractors and trucks,” Jeff said. “It was mind-blowing what everyone did for us.”

The day after John died, Jeff said a crew was at work taking on the neverending task of picking rock.

“The farm is on the edge of the glacier,” Jeff said. “We have a lot of rock and have to pick rock every time we do anything in the elds. We could have built a dozen stone houses from all the rock we’ve picked.”

By the end of the week, the third crop was cut and chopping commenced Saturday morning. Trista said everything was completed and the bunker was covered by late Saturday afternoon.

“We are so sincerely grateful for everything that Steve, Taylor and John, and everyone from Mahr Brothers and Romanowski Corporation did for us, during our time of grief,” Trista said. “There are just no words to express our appreciation for everything they did for us, lending us a helping hand when we

most needed it.”

Time moves on, and the hay keeps growing. The end of August brought fourth crop hay: the rst crop of many that Jeff would make without his father by his side.

“Doing fourth crop was hard; it was really emotional,” Jeff said. “I’d nd myself tearing up sometimes. Nothing will ever be the same without my dad here doing it with me.”

After graduating high school, Jeff returned to the farm in 2002 and joined his father in operating the dairy. The two transitioned the farm from a tiestall barn to their current freestall facility.

“I never wanted to work anywhere else or do anything else,” Jeff said. “Dad was still involved in the day-today stuff here. I miss him every single minute of every single day.”

For Jeff, the memory of how his friends and neighbors supported him during his darkest hour continues to move him to tears while also being a source of comfort and strength. He choked back a sob as he talked about the experience.

“It was just amazing what our friends did,” Jeff said. “Everything was done, and I didn’t have to think about it or do it. It was so nice to have those decisions taken off my shoulders at that time, to have that support from everyone. We are fortunate to have good people in our lives and to live in such a tight-knit community.”

Working Youth

Allen Lester Parents: Bryan and Heather Lester Employer: Tim Weidenfeld, Weidenfeld Dairy Farms Lake Mills, Wisconsin Jefferson County

300 cows

Senior at Lakeside Lutheran High 17 years old

Questions for employer:

Tell us your favorite experience of Allen helping with chores. My favorite experience was when he was learning how to run the chopper as Allen has the ability to pick up new tasks very quickly.

What qualities does Allen have that benet the farm? Allen’s knowledge of cattle and machinery is very benecial to the farm. He is also a quick study, learning new tasks at a fast speed.

Questions for the youth:

What are your responsibilities on the farm? I milk cows, haul wagons,

rake hay and straw, haul away manure, and x equipment or miscellaneous things.

When did you begin helping on the farm? I began working on the farm in February 2021 after I received my driver’s license. I knew the Weidenfelts through my great uncle, and they always helped us. The farm is also close to school, so it works out nicely to work there before school.

How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? I only participate in FFA at my school. If I put my head down and work diligently, I can get all of my schoolwork and chores done before work.

How has working on the farm shaped your character? It has helped me gain knowledge of cows and equipment, which I use to better myself on my own farm. It has also helped me to be more organized. My family’s farm is a dairy beef and beef

farm where we raise about 100 steers a year and have 30 beef breeding stock. It is a small farm running only 80 acres of grain, but we do all of the planting and maintaining of the crops as well as harvesting it ourselves. My parents and sister and I run the farm.

What do you love most about farm life? I honestly love the people. They are always willing to help me and others as well. Helping has grown to be a part of me, in that I’m always willing to give a complete stranger a helping hand.

What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your family and your employer? The list is endless, but if I had to choose what my favorite thing is to do that I have learned, it is to combine on my own farm. My employers and my family taught me how to run the combine and how things work in it to better understand what I am doing, and it is a very enjoyable job.

What are your future plans? My plans for the future are to become an operator engineer. My dad became one, and like some people, I also want to do what my dad does. I enjoy running equipment and think that I would be a good operator.

Seventeen-year-old Allen Lester of Lake Mills, Wisconsin works for Wiedenfeld Farms, a 300-cow dairy operation near Lake Mills. Lester is a member of FFA and does many different duties for his employer.

Hunting in dairy country

Hendrickson shoots 320-pound bear

MENAHGA, Minn. – Sometimes hunter and bear play a bit of a waiting game. The hunter knows the bear is out there, but the bear takes a while to show up in the esh.

That was the case with Peter-Mark Hendrickson and old one-eye, as Hendrickson called him, because of the bear’s damaged left eye Hendrickson and his sons had seen in camera footage from as long as a year ago. The bear also had a large scar on his rear as if he had been in a ght.

“He looked thinner this year (in camera footage) and was kind of skin and bones,” Hendrickson said. “He looked like he was ready for the nursing home. I think he was going downhill.”

Hendrickson and his wife, Lynn, dairy farm near Menahga in Wadena County with their children, Ryan, Sarah, Bradley and Jill. They milk 115 Holsteins in a tiestall

barn.

Hendrickson got his rst bear tag in 2016 and shot a 200-pound bear that year. Bradley got a 300-pound bear last year. Hendrickson refers to Ryan as the trophy hunter of the group because he does not waste his tag on any old bear. The night before Hendrickson met his most recent bear in the esh, Ryan dissuaded him from shooting a younger bear so they could hold out for old one-eye. They shined a light on the younger bear to chase him away out of their stand area to clear room for the older bear.

On the evening of Sept. 5, Bradley was in the stand with Hendrickson. Their stand is near a swamp on Hendrickson’s aunt’s land a few miles southeast of the Hendrickson farm.

As the sun was sinking low, fate nally put the bear in their path. Bradley could see with binoculars that the bear had a damaged left eye.

“That’s the one we were waiting for,” Hendrickson said.

The bear was coming from the east. Hendrickson hoped to use his pistol, but it was hard to see in the fading light. The bear walked up to about 10 feet in front of the

stand and then turned north.

When the bear turned, they could see the scar on his rump.

Hendrickson grabbed his rie.

“Even with all the years I’ve been hunting, your heart still pounds so hard that you think you could have a heart attack,” Hendrickson said.

The rie shot in the neck was good, and the bear went down.

“I gure he was 10 or 12 years old,” Hendrickson said. “He still weighed 320 pounds, but I gure he was 400 or 500 pounds last year. He was a big old warrior before he got old.”

Hendrickson has sent one of the bear’s teeth to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to be tested for age.

In the meantime, the family has a new bearskin rug on the way as well as bear bacon, sausage and other cuts of meat. Hendrickson’s favorite is bear bacon.

“I just love it,” he said. “That’s my goto stuff.”

As he looks back on that night, Hendrickson knows he has another great hunting memory to add to his collection.

“It was a fun night,” he said.
