Minnesota cow named Holstein USA’s Star of the Breed

Deb holds her own in the showring, parlor By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com

HAMBURG, Minn. – At 7 years old, Eastriver Goldwyn Deb 176 is a showstopper in the showring and a powerhouse in the parlor. “She’s a total cow,” Corey Feltmann said. “You take her to the showring and she can hold her own. In the parlor, I’d put her up against anybody. Not only on the milk, the fat, the protein, she also breeds back and makes good daughters.” Feltmann owns Deb in partnership with friend and neighbor, Andy Stuewe. Deb’s well-rounded success led her to capturing Holstein Association USA’s highest honor for a registered Holstein cow. She was recently named the association’s Star of the Breed and will be recognized at the annual meeting June 24 at the National Holstein Convention in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The trouble-free cow is housed at Stuewe’s farm, where he and his daughters, Ava and Jayde, milk 90 cows at Flower-Brook Registered Holsteins near Hamburg. Complementing the herd’s 25,000-pound herd average, Deb has over 175,000 pounds of lifetime milk, last noted for producing 39,060 pounds of milk, 1,353 pounds of fat and 1,241 pounds of protein in her fth lactation. “The fat and protein levels are what really do it for her too,” Feltmann said. “Her components are extremely high for the milk she gives.” At Stuewe’s last test in May, Deb was producing 120 pounds of milk. Throughout her lifetime, Deb has shufed between Stuewe’s farm site and Feltmann’s, which is located in nearby Norwood Young America. Feltmann

bedded pack for the older cows. It’s less stress for all of us that way.” The Canadian cow was purchased by Feltmann in 2017 at the Best of Triple-T and Heath Sale in Ohio. At the sale, Feltmann had his eye on another animal. He owned Deb’s older full sister, Eastriver Gold Deb 851 EX-93 3E, and wanted to diversify his

herd’s genetics. However, with the other animal selling higher than Feltmann budgeted, Deb was a suggested option to pursue. “(Michael Health) sent pictures of Deb, and she did not take the trip well. It was a long trip, and she had to take a Turn to DEB | Page 4

He talked me into it, and it’s turned out that the best thing I’ve done was listen to him.” Immediately following the purchase of Deb, Feltmann called Stuewe. The pair already owned a few animals together. “I originally said, ‘No.’ I didn’t like her,” Stuewe said. “After we picked her up it took about a week for her to bounce back. Once we got her settled, I couldn’t have been more impressed.” In June of that year, Feltmann and Stuewe exhibited Deb at the Minnesota State Show where she took the reserve intermediate champion title. She went on to claim intermediate champion and reserve grand champion cow at the Midwest Fall National that same year. Deb kept garnering more titles and was named Cow of the Year by the Minnesota Holstein Association in 2020. “She’s just kept getting better and better as time goes on,” Stuewe said. In her prime years of showing, the Star of the Breed honorary was known for her wide, barreled chest, straight top and extraordinary set of feet

Deb’s massive rear udder does not go unnoticed, Feltmann said. “It’s hard to get around her and that’s what sets her apart in the showring,” he said. “Deb knows when it’s time

to go. Come show morning, she knows what to do. It’s unbelievable, and she does it so easily.” The 94-point cow is the daughter of a Homestead Astronomical Deb EX-95 3E

and has been nominated several times over for all-American. While Deb’s time in the showring has passed, Feltmann and Stuewe continue to reap the rewards of this cow. The pair has done IVF work with Deb

and have been impressed with the results – three daughters in milking, two scoring Very Good-86. She is currently ushed to Woodcrest King Doc, Farnear Delta-Lambda-ET and GoldenOaks Master-ET. Those calves should be on the ground within the next year. “We had a lot of fun with Deb, and we know we’ll have more fun with her daughters,” Feltmann said. “We’re extremely happy with all of that.” Stuewe agreed. “All of her daughters have been better than expected,” Stuewe said. “Deb is exactly what we want; a low maintenance cow that produces well.” Stuewe and Feltmann grew up in 4-H together. While they operate their dairy farms separately, the pair enjoys jointly owning a few animals and nding success in their breeding philosophy. They were surprised and honored to hear of Deb’s latest accomplishment and envision her legacy in the dairy industry to truly exemplifying what kind of cow she is. “I think we’ll be hearing that name and pedigree around Minnesota for a while,” Feltmann said.

Need forage?

Woldt Farms provides feed across the state By Stacy Smart

andrea.b@dairystar.com

BRILLION, Wis. – For 30 years, Woldt Farms has supplied other dairy farms with an essential commodity – feed. A surplus of feed has put the family in a position to provide custom total mixed rations and forages to fellow farmers near and far. “We started offering this service because we had more land to grow feed on than what we needed for our cows,” Daryl Woldt said. “We were able to grow our land base and continued offering this service even after doubling the size of our herd in 2016.” Daryl and his wife, Amy, farm

with their ve daughters – Kelsey, Kayla, Kristen, Karly and Kortney, who represent the fth generation at Woldt Farms. Kelsey works on the farm full time, while her sisters are part time. The Woldts milk 1,500 cows and farm 4,500 acres near Brillion on the farm started in 1911 by Daryl’s great-grandfather, Herman Woldt. Woldt Farms is a diversied operation offering custom feed services, manure hauling and irrigating, harvesting, bagging and trucking. Their eet of 16 semis are used to haul forages, manure, whey and more. Offering ready-to-consume feed in the form of a custom TMR, Woldt Farms provides complete rations for dairies with up to 200 cows. Rations are mixed at Woldt Farms and delivered to the customer via semi. In warm weather, a ration is delivered every other day, and in cool weather, delivery may occur every three days. Farms short on land needing a mix

year-round or a dairy looking for a temporary solution to help them through a bind can benet from this service. “When we rst began selling TMR, we thought of it as a way to help a young farmer get started,” Woldt said. “They could rent a barn, get a herd of cows and buy their feed.” The TMR provided by Woldt Farms is streamlined for use in highproducing herds and formulated by the Woldts’ nutritionist. It is a recipe that Woldt said works across the board for most customers. When the business was at its prime, the Woldts had around 10 customers. “Some farms had Jerseys, so we formulated for less intake in those instances,” Woldt said. “We did the same for herds not shooting for as much milk. If they didn’t have the potential for 80 to 90 pounds, we Turn to WOLDTS | Page 7

didn’t have to formulate the ration as rich.” The Woldts’ custom TMR business has slowed in recent years due to a disappearance of smaller farms. “There are less and less small farms, and we may not see this part of the business pick back up,” Woldt said. Adapting to a changing market, the Woldts’ primary feed service now centers around forages for farms that

grow their own crops but run short at certain times of the year. The need is seen by farms of any size, and the Woldts have sold forages to farms with up to 7,000 cows. Supplementing a farm’s forage needs may be a commitment that lasts several weeks, months or longer. In some cases, the Woldts supply forages to farms yearround. tap into the Woldts’ product offerings, which include conventional and BMR corn silage, haylage, fescue grass, sorghum Sudan silage, triticale and winter rye. Forages are stored at Woldt Farms and delivered to the customer as needed. However, sometimes a customer will buy product directly from the eld, such as rst-crop hay or a eld of corn. The Woldts sell feed all over the state, shipping out three to ve semi loads per day. “We have at least a dozen customers we ship forages to,” Woldt said. “Business has really picked up this spring. We sell more forage this time of year as people are running out of haylage.” The Woldts believe in growing high-quality feed on healthy land and using techniques like no till and cover cropping. “We’re into cover cropping and no till quite heavily,” Woldt said. “This year, we did a lot of cover crops, and we also planted corn into green for the rst time. Some of our elds are in their sixth year of doing cover crops and no till. We’ve done pattern tiling over the years, which makes these methods work better.” The Woldts’ trucks are equipped with pumps to top-dress hay elds, and they apply most of their manure during the growing season to crops such as triticale, sorghum, fescue grasses and alfalfa to allow for immediate nutrient utilization. The family grows a lot of grasses and has moved half of their alfalfa into grass. Last spring, they also started green chopping and are seeing a savings in feed and labor costs as a result. of fescues, clovers and festulolium, the Woldts green chop a mixture of perennial European cool-season grasses. “This is a big thing for us,” Woldt said. “It really works. Cows do better on grasses, and we see improved intakes. There seems to be more nutrients in green feed than in fermented forages, and it’s helped with milk production. We’ve been

able to reduce the expensive items in our ration like protein and starch and still maintain production. Fiber is more available in the grasses and they’re highly palatable.” Woldt said there is zero storage loss from eld to cow when green chopping. “We don’t have to store that feed on a pile, cover it, take the loss, then

uncover it, face it and move it to a mixing area,” Woldt said. Woldt Farms has become a trusted source for high-quality feed for farms needing forages or a TMR. Raising more forages than needed to feed their herd, the Woldt family is happy to provide the specialty service of supplying feed on demand to other farms.

Trade, sustainability is dairy’s next frontier Among all the great stories dairy can tell in 2021 as it celebrates National Dairy Month in June, from its reafrmation by grocery shoppers to farmer leadership in COVID-19 vaccine drives, the sector’s gains in global trade is a true standout. U.S. dairy exports volumes reached a record in March, with the percentage of domestic milk production sent overseas that month the second highest ever. Revenues are also increasing – the $688 million worth of dairy products shipped abroad in March was the highest since 2014. Trade is always top of mind By Jim Mulhern at the National Milk Producers NMPF, CEO Federation, and of course at the U.S. Dairy Export Council, with whom we work closely. As the U.S. dairy-farmer organization that encompasses the full range of issues that shape a farmer’s success, we at NMPF are also focused on an important part of the trade story that’s less obvious, but increasingly important: how boosting dairy sales overseas depends on progress on sustainability investments at home. Just as it is in the United States, sustainability is increasingly becoming crucial for global consumers. The good news is U.S. dairy is a leader globally on sustainability just as it is on quality and affordability – crucial considerations for feeding the world, which ultimately benets both farmers at home and consumers abroad. First, the part we’ve always known: U.S. dairy farmers deliver affordable nutrition that meets global food-security needs. Nutrient-dense U.S. dairy products have nourished billions of people worldwide. They provide nutrients critical to preventing and addressing malnutrition, including high-quality protein, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iodine, and vitamins B2 and B12. And because U.S. dairy combines high quality and competitive cost, its export creates broad-based nutritional benets worldwide. But another, increasingly important element of U.S. dairy’s appeal is its world-leading sustainability. Even as they produce high-quality, affordable products, U.S. dairy cooperatives and the entire industry are cultivating and supporting sustainable food systems that are good for people, animals, and the planet. This serves global consumers and reects their needs. It dovetails with the environmental, economic and social aspects of sustainability as dened by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, and it also aligns with the values of stewardship U.S. dairy farmers have always embodied. Sustainability matters to dairy, as U.S. consumers have discovered — and as the world increasingly knows. U.S. dairy’s commitments are tangible and measurable. The industry’s 2050 Environmental Stewardship Goals and its Net Zero Initiative are putting the U.S. dairy sector on a path toward becoming carbon neutral or better by 2050 while optimizing water use and improving water quality. The same emphasis on sustainable production is at the core of the National Dairy FARM Program, which helps U.S. dairy farmers remain leaders in animal care, environmental stewardship, workforce development, antibiotic stewardship, and biosecurity. Such sector-wide emphasis on best practices and sustainability leadership has already brought results. Innovative farming practices helped reduce dairy’s carbon footprint per gallon of milk by 19 percent from 2007 to 2017, while using 30 percent less water and 21 percent less land. UN FAO research has found that North America was the only region in the world to reduce farm-level dairy greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions between 2005 and 2015, even as milk production increased. Choosing American milk products directly reduces global dairy emissions. That’s a great message for the world about U.S. milk. And make no mistake, the world needs what we have to offer. Global dairy consumption is expected to rise 16 percent in the next decade, and with competitors such as New Zealand and the European Union facing constraints on production due to their own policies, the opportunities for U.S. dairy brought through sustainable production are real. So let’s raise a glass to sustainability this National Dairy Month. U.S. dairy farmers and its world of consumers are working to improve their health and the health of their planet every day. This is a success that can be sustained. And in the U.S. dairy community, it is what we pledge to do.

The forum brings together key stakeholders and dairy industry leaders at a time when consumer trends are changing, new technologies are emerging, and the demand for transparency is increasing. This event is hosted by New England Dairy with partnership support from Midwest Dairy, other state and regional checkoff organizations, and the Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center. Topics will focus on how to drive sales growth by understanding consumers’ needs and becoming more relevant to them through innovation, partnerships and marketing. Discussions will address questions such as, “What global trends can I capitalize on as more dairy is shipped outside the U.S.?” and “What’s next for dairy?” “Dairy is one of the most popular food categories in America, but growth in some dairy segments is stagnant,” said Jenny Karl, CEO, New England Dairy. “What are the real reasons why and what can we do about it? We invite dairy farmers and business leaders of all types to join us for a dairy-focused forum, featuring leading experts who can help uncover actionable insights to grow the category.” The forum features its popular live consumer focus group, allowing attendees to hear from multi- cultural Gen Z consumers about their opinions on dairy and farming, as well as purchasing decisions and how their buying habits changed during COVID-19. There also will be small group breakout sessions for discussions and to brainstorm how the supply chain can learn from and use the learnings to continue connecting with consumers and increasing demand. Presentations include: “Opportunities to Grow U.S. Dairy with Consumers Internationally,” with Anoo Pothen, Director, Consumer Insights, U.S. Dairy Export Council; “Feeding Gen Z: Unleashing Dairy’s Superpowers with MultiCultural Youth in a Post-Pandemic World,” with Philip Kurien, Chief Strategy Ofcer, The Family Room; “Teaching Innovation,” with Mick Ebeling, Founder and CEO, Not Impossible Labs. Dairy farmers and industry members can register at www. dairyexperienceforum.com.

Victoria Blonigen Parents: Willy and Judy Blonigen

Dairy Star - Third Section • Saturday, June 12, 2021 • Page 13

Get to know Victoria Blonigen, St. Martin, Minnesota

Employers: Tell us your favorite experience of your daughter helping with chores. Our favorite experience with Victoria helping with chores was when she would toddle after her older siblings trying to help them. Also, even from a young age, when the vet had to come, she always had to be there. She loved watching the vet when they came to do things, especially a DA surgery. What qualities does your daughter have that benet the farm? A quality that Victoria has that benets the farm is that she is responsible. If we tell her something needs to be done, she gets it done. Youth: What are your responsibilities on the farm? My responsibilities on the farm are feeding corn to calves and steers, feeding silage to heifers, scraping gutters and setting up units and milking cows. When did you begin helping on the farm? I have been helping on the farm for as long as I can remember whether it was riding in the tractor or attempting to push in hay with a little shovel. How do you balance school extracurricular activities and farm chores? Balancing school and farm chores isn’t easy. Most of the time I end up doing my homework after chores. I am in the Melrose FFA, and I am on the FFA ofcer team this year so I will do my chores before I leave to go do stuff for that. How has working on a farm shaped your character? Working on a farm has taught me responsibility for getting things done, and if it doesn’t get done, there are consequences for not getting it done. It has also taught me timeliness and knowing when to be out for chores and being out on time in the morning to

It also taught me that the faster you do chores, the faster you get to go to the lake to cool off. What do you love most about farm life? One of the favorite things about farm life is working with and spending time with the animals, learning the different needs and unique qualities of each type of animal. What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your parents? Working alongside my parents has taught me that communication is a

big part in life. If your communication is off, then cows get out and things go wrong.

What are your future plans? My future plans are going to a two-year college. I don’t know for what yet, probably something with animals, but I’m not positive.

Farmers for Sustainable Food marks transformation of conservation alliance An alliance created ve years ago to support and promote farmers in their conservation efforts has reached a new level, with a broader focus, more innovative projects and an increasingly diverse set of partners. The group, formed in 2016 as the Dairy Strong Sustainability Alliance, announced its transformation into Farmers for Sustainable Food, a nonprot organization that provides resources, advocacy, support and empowerment for farmers who are innovating and demonstrating sustainable farming practices. “Our vision is a sustainable food system in which farmers, their communities and the environment thrive,” said Todd Doornink, president of Farmers for Sustainable Food and a dairy farmer in northwestern Wisconsin. “Our focus is on uniting stakeholders to collaborate across organizational lines, inspiring farmers to be leaders of change and empowering our partners to meet their goals.” The Dairy Business Association and The Nature Conservancy originally organized the alliance in Wisconsin around the goal of helping dairy farmers make tangible improvements to the environment and other aspects of their farms. Since then, additional partners have come aboard representing various parts of the food supply chain, from individual farms and agricultural groups to food processors and food companies. And the group is facilitating greater opportunities to achieve environmental goals and promote progress in Wisconsin and elsewhere in the Upper Midwest. Farmers for Sustainable Food closely supports six farmer-led watershed conservation groups encompassing 211 farms, nearly 300,000 acres and 212,000 cows, hogs and other livestock. That support ranges from administration and communication to strategic services and grant applications. The organization and its partners are also developing on-farm initiatives to test ways of measuring sustainability and documenting the impact of conservation practices, both environmentally and nancially. Free health and safety training for immigrant dairy workers in Minnesota The Upper Midwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center is offering an OSHA approved program to train Immigrant Dairy Workers. The trainings are provided in Spanish, and free of charge. The trainings focus on a range of topics including hazards on the farm, cow handling, safe use of machinery, workers’ rights and responsibilities, and chemicals. UMASH trainers can come to your farm to offer 1-hour trainings for up to ve lessons. View the curriculum at umash.umn.edu/seguridad. For more information contact Chela Vázquez at vazquezc@umn.edu. 2020 custom rate guide available Just in time for the 2021 growing season the 2020 Custom Rate Guide is available for farmers and custom operators. The 2020 version includes more custom operations and equipment rentals than previous versions. “The Guide lists updated costs for common custom farming operations, from tillage to planting crops to baling hay and making silage,” said Paul Mitchell, University of Wisconsin-Madison professor and Extension agriculture economics specialist. “It gives costs for custom operations for the state and by region, and the typical range for these costs among operators.” The 2020 Custom Rate guide is available online at https://go.wisc.edu/13q79h or contact your local county Extension ofce for a hard copy. The survey was conducted in the fall of 2020 by a team from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection, UW-Madison Division of Extension specialists, and the UW’s Renk Agribusiness Institute. ConƟnued from UDDER STUFF | Page 16 agricultural producers in the Prairie Pothole states can now sign up for the Soil Health and Income Protection Program, which provides a short-term option to plant cover on less productive agricultural lands while improving soil health and carbon sequestration. The U.S. Department of Agriculture made improvements to this pilot program available in South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota and Montana, and signup runs until July 16. $3.5 million grant for conservation practices on irrigated cropland in central Minnesota The Minnesota Dept. of Agriculture and more than 30 partners received a $3.5 million NRCS grant to implement conservation measures on irrigated land. Coarse and sandy soil types common in irrigated elds can leach nitrogen and chemicals into groundwater. For more background on groundwater protection see the MDA’s Dealing with Nitrate in Groundwater webpage, and MDA’s Nitrogen Fertilizer BMPs for Agricultural Lands webpage. The grant will fund a ve-year project within 20 soil and water conservation districts and the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. The SWCDs include: Becker, Benton, Cass, Dakota, Douglas, East Otter Tail, Grant, Hubbard, Kandiyohi, Meeker, Morrison, Pope, Sherburne, Stearns, Stevens, Swift, Todd, Wadena, Washington and West Otter Tail. Partners include SWCDs, institutes of education, state agencies, irrigators associations, and businesses. Checkoff helps Taco Bell unveil second beverage featuring dairy Taco Bell is unveiling its second frozen beverage featuring dairy at all participating U.S. locations for a limited time, thanks to checkoff support. The Mtn Dew® Baja Blast® Colada Freeze features a dairy-based creamer made from real heavy cream, with pineapple and coconut avors* to give it a tropical feel. The drink became available May 20 on a limited-time basis or until supplies run out. “Taco Bell fans now have the opportunity to enjoy a delicious tropical, creamy twist on the iconic Baja Blast Freeze,” said Mike Ciresi, a Dairy Management Inc. (DMI) senior dairy scientist who works with Taco Bell. “The Baja Blast® Colada Freeze shows that dairy plays a key role on Taco Bell’s beverage menu. Expanding beverage offerings to include dairy not only delights customers but drives additional dairy sales and adds value to the checkoff investment.” The drink builds off the success of last year’s Pineapple Whip Freeze that used a similar dairy creamer. Ciresi, along with Emil Nashed, who leads DMI’s Global Innovation Partnerships science team, joined DMI’s Product Research Team and the Midwest Dairy Center at the University of Minnesota to crack the code on the creamer. The efforts led to a dairy-based, shelf-stable creamer that consists of real cream and met Taco Bell’s product requirements. “The Pineapple Whip Freeze unlocked dairy in Taco Bell’s frozen beverage category,” Ciresi said. “Once we had a way to unlock the creamer, we had exibility to experiment with avors and other types of freezes. Pineapple Whip Freeze was a huge beverage launch for Taco Bell and we’re building off that now.” Heather Mottershaw, vice president of pipeline innovation and product development for Taco Bell, said the restaurant chain benets greatly from dairy checkoff resources. “We always love collaborating with DMI scientists and dreaming up amazing ideas together,” Mottershaw said. “The Baja Blast Colada is the perfect blend of signature Baja blast with a pineapple-coconut tropical creamer.” FARM program publishes 2021 drug residue prevention manual The National Dairy Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM) Program published its 2021 Milk & Dairy Beef Drug Residue Prevention Reference Manual and accompanying pocket guide, an on-farm educational tool that promotes best management practices for administering treatment to dairy cattle. The annual publication also provides a comprehensive list of FDA-approved drugs for use in cattle with their associated milk and meat withdrawal times, along with milk and urine screening test information. The pocket guide offers a quick reference to these informational charts in a small, laminated, ringbound booklet. “The U.S. dairy industry is committed to antibiotic stewardship and appropriate use of all medications used for our dairy cattle,” says Karen Jordan, DVM, chair NMPF Animal Health and Well-Being Committee. “The Drug Residue Prevention Manual has helped dairy farmers make educated choices when working with their veterinarians to care for their animals for more than 30 years” Turn to UDDER STUFF | Page 18

When dairy animals get sick or injured and treatment is necessary, producers and veterinarians use antibiotics and other drugs prudently. The manual serves as a resource for producers and veterinarians, and includes information on: residue prevention best practices; record keeping and herd health; drug administration; culling of animals; residue testing; drug classes; and approved drugs and screening tests “Collaborating with veterinarians and dairy professionals to advance the responsible use of antibiotics and preserve animal health and welfare is at the core of our partnership with the FARM program,” says Mike Lormore DVM, MS, MBA, head of U.S. cattle technical services at Zoetis. Saputo expands non-dairy cheese and valueadded ingredients with two acquisitions The Montreal-based dairy processor and cheese manufacturer said Tuesday it had completed the acquisition of Bute Island Foods, a manufacturer, marketer and distributor of vegan cheese.

The Scottish company services both the retail and foodservice markets under its award-winning vegan brand Sheese as well as through private label brands. Saputo also entered into an agreement to acquire the Reedsburg, Wisconsin, facility of Wisconsin Specialty Protein, which makes value-added ingredients like goat whey, organic lactose and other dairy powders. The dairy company said the two acquisitions, which cost a combined $187 million, t with the company’s new global strategic plan to be discussed during its year-end earnings presentation next week. Saputo’s chief executive and board chairman Lino Saputo Jr. said the acquisition of Bute Island Foods reects the company’s ongoing efforts to grow its presence in the dairy alternative sector. “Our commitment remains to expand our footprint in the dairy alternatives space to meet the changing demands of our customers and consumers,” Saputo said in a statement. “This investment marks an important milestone that will allow us to accelerate our growth in this area globally, putting innovation at the forefront of our priorities.”

The business, located off the West Coast of Scotland, has about 180 employees, while Wisconsin Specialty Protein has about 40 workers. The Wisconsin Specialty Protein deal was expected to close at the end of May and will “enable Saputo to broaden and increase the value of its ingredients offering,” the company said. The deal will also enhance its portfolio in the United States and internationally, Saputo added. The two acquisitions will strengthen Saputo’s global portfolio of strong assets and brands, said Irene Nattel, an RBC Dominion Securities Inc. analyst. “Although these combined deals are relatively small, they reinforce (Saputo’s) positioning as one of the top 10 global dairy producers with leading market positions in virtually all of the attractive global milk sheds,” she said in a note to clients. “The two acquisitions are consistent with (Saputo’s) strategy to broaden its dairy alternatives and value-added ingredients assortment and to accelerate Turn to UDDER STUFF | Page 19

ConƟnued from UDDER STUFF | Page 18 growth through strategic investments, both big and small with a view to double revenues over time through selective, disciplined acquisitions.” Dairy industry applauds USTR decision to pursue USMCA dispute settlement case enforcing dairy market access obligations in Canada The U.S. Dairy Export Council and the National Milk Producers Federation praised May 25’s announcement that U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai has initiated a U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement dispute settlement proceeding over Canada’s administration of dairy tariff rate quotas. USDEC and NMPF have been calling for full enforcement of Canada’s trade obligations given Canada’s ongoing refusal to change how it handles dairy market access under USMCA. Initiating an ofcial dispute settlement will, under USMCA rules, establish a panel to determine whether Canada has been violating its trade obligations. If the panel determines a lack of compliance, the U.S. would then be granted the right to impose retaliatory duties if Canada fails to x its problematic TRQ administrative practices. USDEC and NMPF have carefully monitored Canada’s actions regarding its USMCA dairy commitments and have urged the administration and Congress to make this a priority as soon as USMCA entered into force. The organizations highlighted for USTR and the U.S. Department of Agriculture the inconsistencies between Canada’s dairy TRQ allocations and Canada’s USMCA obligations. In a detailed ling submitted to the administration, NMPF and USDEC provided the agencies with a specic review of the Canadian TRQ system and an explanation of the negative impacts resulting from them. The concerns raised by USDEC and NMPF have been echoed by a broad bipartisan coalition of members of Congress. Most recently, several leading members of the House Ways and Means and Agriculture Committees joined together on a bipartisan message to USTR urging further enforcement action and multiple members of Congress shared a similar message during Amb. Tai’s trade oversight hearings in May. Prior to that, Senators broached the topic with USTR during Ambassador Tai’s conrmation hearing process. Last August, 104 Representatives sent a letter to USTR and USDA asking for Canada to be held accountable to its trade promises while a letter in the Senate was signed by 25 Senators. USDEC and NMPF commend the continued engagement of so many members of Congress on this important issue.

WHICH BARN IS BEST FOR YOUR HERD?

Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.

Starwood Rafters Uses Pole Sheds • Free Stalls Riding Arenas Pavilion Shelters Machinery Storage

The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

• Spans up to 72 ft. • Up to 12’ spacing depending on the load you desire • Bird nesting control • Better ventilation & visability • No feed alley post obstruction • Additional ceiling height
