Milking Shorthorns the heart of Mapleton Valley Farms

Agnews breeds for excellence in type, production, longevity
- Doug Abrahamson
By Stacey Smart

OCONOMOWOC, Wis. – A special wedding gift brought Milking Shorthorns to the farm of Pat and Phyllis Agnew in 1978. Friends of the couple pooled their money to buy the newlyweds a registered Milking Shorthorn heifer. And so began the start of Mapleton Valley Farms. The Agnews welcomed fellow Milking Shorthorn breeders to their farm June 17 during the American Milking Shorthorn Society’s 100th Annual Meeting and Convention held in Fort Atkinson June 16-19. Milking Shorthorn enthusiasts came from all over the United States to celebrate the centennial event, which included an open house at Mapleton Valley Farms near Oconomowoc. Attendees had an opportunity to view the farm’s cattle, which were washed and clipped and standing in stalls of wood shavings. Guests also enjoyed bakery pretzels, cheese samples and beverages while touring the farm. Mapleton Valley Farms is run by the Agnew family, which includes Pat and Phyllis, and their

The Agnews milk 50 cows in a tiestall barn and farm 350 acres and also do custom planting and combining on 500 acres. A century farm in 2009, the sixth generation of Agnews – the grandchildren of Pat and Phyllis – have just begun showing cattle. “My love of the Milking Shorthorn is a family tradition,” Phyllis Agnew said. She grew up on a farm in Fort Atkinson with one of the largest Milking Shorthorn herds in the
country. Her parents, Willard and Sylvia Gerner, milked 60 cows and had 200 total head. Her dad did early embryo transfer work, and one of the first cows he flushed had seven offspring. Weg Acres Major’s Faith was also the first Milking Shorthorn in the country to produce registered embryos, Agnew said. “My in-laws had a good grade Holstein herd,” said Agnew, who came on board with her husband the year they married and

Known for their elite genetics, cattle merchandising is a big part of the Agnews’ business. The family sells animals at state and national sales as well as through private sale and also sells bulls to stud and through private market. The Agnews show at their county fair, the state fair and World Dairy Expo. The farm is home to all-Americans and Excellent-scored cattle, and the 2017 Wisconsin Cow of the Year came from Mapleton Valley Farms. The farm’s cows were also featured on the cover of Hoard’s Dairyman in 2019 as part of the magazine’s cow judging contest. “Our first foundation cow came from the Van Dyke herd in New Richmond, whose farm was originally home to a herd of Milking Shorthorns,” Agnew said. “There were two cows left when they decided to switch to Holstein. We bought those two. One was named Ria, and she was one of our most outstanding animals.” The R family continues to impress at Mapleton Valley. One such showstopper from that line is Recall – an Excellent 2E-93 6-year-old that was nominated all-American senior 2-yearold and senior 3-year-old. Building upon notable cow families, the Agnews were able to get in on a piece of the famous Cissy cow when they bought three of her embryos from a national sale. The purchase
resulted in two heifers – Cassidy and Claire – which are the only heifers from this Milking Shorthorn. Both daughters scored Excellent 3E-93. “We did a lot of flushing with them, and right now, we have 10 young offspring and three cows from that family,” Agnew said. “We merchandised many of those animals at state and national sales.” The Agnews sold one of the offspring from that original heifer at this year’s national Milking Shorthorn sale June 19 where live lots averaged $2,280 and the high seller went for $9,700. “Cissy excelled in both type and production,” Agnew said. “It was a dream to get two heifers out of three embryos and have both animals mature. No matter what breed you have, it’s not easy to find someone that really transmits. You might have a fabulous donor, but that doesn’t mean she will transmit. But Cissy did.” Longevity reigns at Mapleton Valley Farms where the majority of Milking Shorthorns are in their third lactation or greater. Mapleton Vly Chance Francie was almost 20 years old when she passed away last year. She had a final classification score of VG-86 and made 280,065 pounds of milk,10,260 pounds of fat and 8,543 pounds of protein in 13 lactations. Borroloola, their cow of the year, is scored Excellent 4E-92 and will turn 11 this fall. She is a certified cow in the Milking Shorthorn breed – a status she achieved based on her deviation in milk over the breed average. “We’ve built on certain families and also do embryo work,” Agnew said. “We’ve sold embryos internationally and have been very lucky in getting Turn to AGNEWS | Page 5

bulls into stud as well. We bought a cow from my mom and dad’s herd and sold one of her sons, Zumba, to Semex. He was an A2A2 bull used heavily in Australia, the U.K. and Canada.” Pat was a board member and president of the National Milking Shorthorn Association in 2009, while Katie currently serves as a national board member. Tom judges state and national cattle shows, and Katie has started judging as well. In addition to farming with their parents, Katie is also a high school science teacher, and Tom owns a dairy farm supply company. Katie’s teaching days are book-ended by milking cows morning and night. “This is definitely a four-person operation,” Agnew said. The Agnews strive for high components and have several animals with over 5% fat and protein. Their breeding strategy reflects their efforts to increase homozygous polled and A2A2 traits. “We think polled is the wave of the future and are doing a lot more polled breeding right now,” Agnew said. “In our bull sales, our clients are asking for polled. We also breed for health traits, feet and legs, and disposition. The older we get, the more important disposition becomes. We like to milk lowmaintenance cows. Type is also a must have. We like showing, and we like to support our state sales.”

Different can be good Moos, Jakubek embrace non-traditional management styles By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
NEW AUBURN, Wis. – Sometimes doing things a bit differently is exactly the way that might work the best. Thinking outside of the box and embracing unconventional management systems has suited Tom Moos and Deb Jakubek well on their Chippewa County organic dairy farm. Moos and Jakubek milk
35 cows in New Auburn with Moos’ son, Austin, 6, and Jakubek’s children, Colton, 17, and McKenna, 14. Moos has operated the farm for nearly 20 years. Jakubek joined him two years ago. The farm consists of 100 acres of pasture and another 135 acres of hay ground. Because the topography lent itself to grazing, Moos made the transition to organic dairy farming in 2005. Over the years, he looked to

less labor-intense management systems to operate his farm and eventually became grass fed, milking once a day and using nurse cows to raise calves. “This farm is either blessed or cursed with a lot of rock, and I planned on doing a lot of grazing anyway,” Moos said. “Organic seemed to be a good fit since we planned to do a lot of pasturing anyway.” Much of the herd is bull
bred, although they have started using some A.I. Cows are bred to Fleckvieh and Normande to capture and build on the grazing genetics of those breeds. “They are good dualpurpose animals,” Jakubek said. “With grass fed and organic, keeping condition on the animals is really important. A fat cow on grass is a lot different from a fat cow on corn as far as metabolic issues and things like that. We
try to breed for the invisible cow, the one who never has problems. She just does her thing, day in and day out.” Labor issues led Moos to further commit to the grazing lifestyle in the summer of 2016, when he secured a contract with Organic Valley. The cows graze during the summer and are fed dry hay and baleage during the

McKenna Jakubek a aches a unit during morning milking June 16. non-grazing months. “I had a milker that took a job in town, and that was when I first started looking at once-a-day milking,” Moos said. “I needed to simplify what I could with no help. I talked to the field rep, and he suggested the grass-fed route.” As luck would have it, a neighbor offered to milk cows, so Moos went forward with the transition to grass-fed production and continued milking twice a day. Milking once a day continued to roll around in the back of Moos’ mind. In the fall of 2019, Moos’ milker quit, prompting the decision that the time might be right to make the change. “I told Deb what I was thinking, figuring she would think I was crazy,” Moos said. “Instead, she agreed it made sense. We decided we needed to try it for at least a year before making a decision whether or not it was right for us.” Milking once a day led to unexpected benefits in addition to decreased labor, including decreased inputs in the areas of electric and dairy supplies. “The pump is only running once a day; the compressor runs less without that second milking each day to cool down; we use half the amount of soap and milkhouse washing detergents,” Moos said. “That all adds up pretty quickly.” Most importantly for the couple, the cows handled the transition with few issues, and they had the herd transitioned by the end of November. “We started by transitioning all the later lactation cows, and anything that calved in we started on once-a-day (milking),” Moos said. “We dropped some in overall production, but the components went up, and we did not have any dramatic changes in our somatic cell count.” Following their transition to oncea-day milking, Moos and Jakubek began using nurse cows to raise their calves.
“We use the higher somatic cell count cows or cows with mastitis issues as nurse cows,” Jakubek said. “It gives them an opportunity for a second career.” Moos and Jakubek have been happy with their calves being raised on the nurse cows. Last summer, they began leaving the calves with the cows full time. With the onset of winter, they had concerns for the possibility of frozen teats, so they decided to remove the calves and allow them access to the cows once a day. Each nurse cow is run through the parlor on a regular basis so they can check teats and udder health. Cows that are not recurrent high somatic cell count cows will rejoin the milking string if there are not as many calves to feed. The management changes Moos and Jakubek have made have been the right fit for them, allowing them to continue dairy farming while experiencing a good quality of life off the farm. In addition to school activities for their children, they enjoy spending time exploring the area on their motorcycle. “When I moved here to the farm, my kids decided to finish up their high school careers in Amherst, so I spend a lot of time going back and forth for their activities,” Jakubek said. “That leaves Tom here alone quite a bit. Milking once a day just makes it more manageable.” Moos continues to hold firm in his belief that dairy farming is not a onesize-fits all, right or wrong enterprise. Instead, he encourages others to look at their farm’s goals and priorities and find what works best. “We might have a bit lower production, but we have way lower inputs,” Moos said. “That makes a big difference in the bottom line. It’s not necessarily about pounds in the tank; it’s more about dollars in the bank. If we can be profitable dairy farming this way and enjoy life, that sounds like the best of both worlds to me.”

Get to know Madisol Elizondo, of Kendall, Wisconsin
Madisol Elizondo 17 years old Senior at Wonewoc Center High School Employers: Brian Friske and Jeannie Jones of Valley Hill Farm Kendall, Wisconsin Monroe County 80 cows Employer: Tell us your favorite experience of Madisol helping with chores. Madisol’s help frees us up to be able to take care of other things needed on the farm. We know we can trust her to do a great job with milking, and she is very reliable. That helps everything on the farm run more smoothly. What qualities does Madisol have that benefit the farm? Her attention to detail is huge. She catches everything. She is a hard worker and gets things done in a timely manner. We have enjoyed having her helping around the farm and watching her grow up. Youth employee: What are your responsibilities on the farm? I milk in the mornings and at nights, and feed calves in the morning. I also help around the farm as needed. When did you begin helping on the farm? I started helping on the farm when I was 9 or 10 years old. I started coming to the farm with Brian’s daughter on weekends, and then I started helping more during the summers. Then I started showing animals at the fairs with them. This year will be my sixth year showing. How do you balance school, extracurricular activities and farm chores? During school, I only milk at night, and then I come to the barn an hour later so I have time for homework. The farm is my life. I love being here and working with the animals.

I love the animals, especially my cow Dazzle, and I love the people I work with here at the farm. What is one thing you have learned from working alongside your employer? WHICH BARN IS BEST FOR YOUR HERD?
Birds just love this barn. The webs in these trusses are easy nest areas for birds. They also restrict air flow which leads to poor ventilation and moisture buildup in the building.
Starwood Rafters Uses Pole Sheds • Free Stalls Riding Arenas Pavilion Shelters Machinery Storage
The arched rafters create a more open barn allowing better ventilation. Also since there are no open webs in the trusses, there are no places for birds to nest.

Select Sires’ farmer-owners propose unification for sustainable future The boards of directors from Select Sires Inc. and five local member cooperatives have voted to unite the federation to become Select Sires Cooperative Inc. This board-led initiative represents an exciting chapter in Select Sires’ history and reflects the best interest of their farmer-owners and employees. The decision must next be ratified by delegates or member-owners from each of the five member cooperatives. Among the many benefits of unification, perhaps the most meaningful is Select Sires will remain a farmer-owned and -controlled cooperative with grassroots leadership throughout the United States. All customer-owner membership and patronage due will be transferred to and paid by Select Sires Cooperative Inc. “The decision to unify is going to be a pivotal force for Select Sires. We have had a tremendous history of success, but we can’t lean on our laurels,” said Dorothy Harms, chairman, Select Sires Inc. board of directors. “We must move forward, look to the future and make changes to secure our position as the industry leader.” As part of a strategic planning program that was initiated in 2016, each of the six member cooperatives and Select Sires Inc. signed a letter of intent, a non-binding agreement, that enabled the cooperatives to study the benefits, opportunities and risks of a potential unification. Farmer boards from five of the six cooperatives, including All West/Select Sires, CentralStar Cooperative Inc., COBA/Select Sires Inc., Select Sires MidAmerica Inc., and Minnesota Select Sires Co-op, Inc., voted to recommend the unification proposal to their respective delegate or farmer-owner voting body. While the vote to recommend unification was not unanimous, Premier Select Sires will remain a Cooperative Member of Select Sires Cooperative Inc. and will have access to Select Sires’ genetics and programs. Select Sires assures farmer-owners will not experience service changes pending unification of the cooperatives. With no overlap in sales and service territories, dairy and beef customers will continue to receive the same, exceptional service from their local representatives. By uniting the federation, Select Sires will create even greater value for their customers by providing access to a broader, more diverse team of experts. Combining resources and enhancing efficiencies internally will allow for valuable investment in research and technology without raising costs to farmer-owners. Expansion of research efforts will translate to innovative solutions, tools and products for Select Sires’ dairy and beef producers. Unification of the federation will solidify Select Sires’ leadership and viability in the industry. Producers can expect to continue working with highly qualified, passionate individuals who know and understand the cattle breeding industry. As a unified cooperative, Select Sires will continue the tradition of excellence while maintaining grassroots leadership and holding the success of farmer-owners and employees above all else. As a dairyman, are you looking to improve the way your fresh cows transition, take off, peak and breed back? Looking to improve rumen health, rumen function, overall health, digestion, feed efficiency, and YOUR BOTTOM LINE??? If so, then…
RECALIBRATE WITH RECAL The RECAL line of probioƟcs is NOT just another probioƟc on the market. RECAL is a probioƟc heavily weighted towards beƩer digesƟon and uƟlizaƟon, primarily FIBER DIGESTION. There are a lot of nutrients in your forages that can be uƟlized by improving digesƟon. RECAL is also a probioƟc that produces more B-vitamins in the rumen of that cow, mainly vitamin B12. B-vitamins are well known to aide in sƟmulaƟng appeƟte, stress, immune system, reproducƟon and also very important in rumen digesƟon.
FEED EFFICIENCY With feed prices on the rise and limited forage supplies, it’s Ɵme to opƟmize dry maƩer intake instead of maximizing dry maƩer intake. Improved digesƟon and rumen health will always lead to improved feed eĸciency!!!
Stop and Think!!!
If you can improve digesƟon, what should happen??? Either the cows should eat the same and produce more, or produce the same and eat less. Cows really eat to their energy requirements. So, by improving digesƟon and uƟlizaƟon, cows meet their energy requirements sooner and don’t need to eat as much dry maƩer. This will also allow the cows more Ɵme to lay in their stall, chew their cud, relax and be comfortable.
Our main focus with RECAL probiotics aan nd YOUR cows!!! cows!!! #
1
To improve rumen health. What is the most important part of that cow??? The RUMEN!!!
#
2
To improve the overall immune system of your cow. The immune system starts in the RUMEN!!!
3
To improve digesƟon and uƟlizaƟon of the feed that the cows are eaƟng. If the feed is going in one end of the cow and coming out the other end of the cow without being digested and uƟlized, what good is it??? A WASTE!!!
#
4
To improve reproducƟon. Let’s face it, you don’t make money milking cows unless you are milking FRESH cows!!!
#
5
To improve YOUR BOTTOM LINE!!! It’s not about how much milk can we make. It’s about how much MONEY can we make!!!

years they’ve ever had in school history,” said Randolph High School athletic director, Aaron Soule. The softball team chose to use the Ottes money to buy chocolate milk as a celebratory drink. Soule said the Ottes have been supportive of the sports teams, but have also helped other organizations in the school such as FFA. They also offer tours of their farm every year for the kindergarteners. “We’re so thankful for their support,” Soule said. “It’s never expected but it doesn’t surprise me because they are so supportive of the school and community. They’re great people, and we’re appreciative they’re in our community.”
DBIA awards $1.19 million in grants to Midwest dairy entrepreneurs The Dairy Business Innovation Alliance (DBIA), a partnership between the Center for Dairy Research (CDR) and Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA), is awarding more than $1M to dairy farm and processor entrepreneurs and existing dairy businesses. In total, 26 dairy entrepreneurs from the five-state region of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and Wisconsin were selected to receive up to $50,000 each in awards from DBIA. “The 52 applications we received this round were very competitive,” shares Vic Grassman, DBIA. “The total request for grants was approximately $2.3 million, and we saw a significant increase in the quality of the business planning and budgeting within the applications. It was also great to see the applicants make use of the DBIA webinar series as a resource to assist in drafting their applications. The benefits were clearly seen in the quality of applications.” “We are delighted to be able to help our dairy farmers diversify, to assist the growth of farmstead operations and to encourage more value-added products,” said John Lucey, CDR Director. The 2021 DBIA spring grant recipients, listed alphabetically by company name, are: Associated Milk Producers, Inc, Minnesota; Berrybrook Organics, South Dakota; Carr Valley Cheese Co., Wisconsin; Cider Farm Brands, LLC, Wisconsin; Cinnamon Ridge, Inc., Iowa; Concept Processing, LLC, Minnesota; Country View Dairy, LLC, Iowa; Deerland Dairy – Illinois; Farm Life Creamery, LLC, South Dakota; GoodSport Nutrition, LLC, Illinois; Hollands’s Family Cheese, LLC, Wisconsin; Kasemeister Creamery, South Dakota; Klemish Creamery – Wisconsin; Landmark Creamery, LLC, Wisconsin; Maple Leaf Cheese Coop dba Monroe Farmers, Wisconsin; Millerville Cooperative Creamery Association, Minnesota; Moore Family Farms, Iowa; Nature’s Prime dba: Khaaza, Minnesota; Olala Creamery, Wisconsin; Pasture Pride Cheese, LLC, Wisconsin; Red Head Creamery, Minnesota; Royal Guernsey Creamery, LLC, Wisconsin; Simple Life Farms, Iowa; Specialty Cheese Co., Inc., Wisconsin; Tuls Dairy dba DARI, LLC, Wisconsin; and Yodelay Yogurt, LLC, Wisconsin.
Dairy producer scholarship opportunities for the Young Dairy Leaders Institute The Young Dairy Leaders Institute, a cornerstone program of the Holstein Foundation, is a nationally recognized three-phase leadership and communication skills development program for young adults (ages 22-45) working in the dairy industry. Full-time dairy producers that apply for YDLI will be considered for three full-ride scholarships that come with an additional cash bonus upon graduation. Dairy producers working with all breeds of dairy cattle, and allied dairy industry members, are encouraged to apply. YDLI Class 12 will have on-site meetings in Fort Worth, Texas Feb. 15-18, 2022 and Feb. 14-17, 2023. Applications are due Aug. 1, 2021 and may be downloaded from the Holstein Foundation website, www.holsteinfoundation.org. Dairy producers that are Holstein Association USA members applying for YDLI are automatically eligible for scholarships and do not need to fill out a separate application. If selected, the scholarships will cover the registration fee, airfare, hotel and any other travel costs associated with attending both the 2022 and 2023 meetings. Upon successful attendance for both meetings, an additional $1,000 graduation bonus check will be provided to the scholarship recipients to help offset costs of being off the farm. The Horace Backus YDLI Scholarship will be provided to two dairy producers from anywhere in the U.S. This fund was created by Tim Abbott, Frank Conyngham, Joel Hastings and Dave Rama to honor Horace’s legacy and encourage dairy producers to attend YDLI. The Robert L. Cain Memorial Scholarship will be given to one dairy producer in the Southeast region. Cain served as a field representative and then Area Manager for Holstein Association USA for 40 years. Visit www.holsteinfoundation.org to download the YDLI Class 12 application, as well as view more detailed information on the program.
