Sharon and Larry Wiste along with their daughter, Katie, stand next to their cow, Milly. The 15-year-old registered Holstein is the DHIA highest lifetime production cow alive in Minnesota. The Wistes milk 26 cows on their farm near Spring Grove, Minn.
SPRING GROVE, Minn. – For the past 13 years, the Wistes have been able to point to a certain stall on the north side of their 26-stall stanchion barn and know which cow is standing there – Milly. “She’s had the same stall since her first lactation. It’s the only place she’s ever stood,” Larry Wiste said. It’s in this stall that L&S Acres Jumpshot Milly has made her mark on the southeast Minnesota farm, producing 357,479 pounds of milk so far in her lifetime. The 15-year-old registered Holstein is also the highest lifetime production cow alive in Minnesota, and was bred and raised by Larry and Sharon Wiste, who milk 26 cows on their farm near Spring Grove, Minn. “She just keeps going,” Sharon said. In her first lactation, Milly started her record with over 22,000 pounds of milk. She peaked in her sixth lactation when she produced 34,659 pounds. That was the same year she had a set of twin heifers. In both her eighth and 11th lactations, Milly produced over 30,000 pounds of milk. “She’s pretty consistent,” Larry said. So far this lactation, Milly has a record of 25,574 pounds after calving last April. “She’s not milking so heavily now because she’s older,” Sharon said. The Wistes attribute some of her success to her size, stature and type. They describe the Jumpshot daughter as a medium or average sized cow with a deep rib, good udder attachments and sound feet and legs. “She really developed into a deep cow as she got older,” said Katie Wiste, one of Larry and Sharon’s three daughters. This modest sized cow with sound type is what the Wistes try to breed for in their herd. “If she were any bigger I don’t

Milly has stood in the same northfacing stall in the Wistes’ barn for all 13 of her lactations.
think she would be here,” Larry said. In addition to acknowledging her type for her production success, the Wistes give credit to their nutritionist, Scott Ellinghuysen, who has been helping them for over 10 years. Milly eats 40 pounds of silage, 25 pounds of a grain mix and a lot of dry hay. “She’s a big hay eater. It’s what she prefers,” Larry said. Although she’s consistent with milk production, Milly also has one consistent problem – milk fever. “Every time she freshens she gets milk fever,” Larry said. “We’ve learned how to deal with it ourselves because we know it’s coming. Other than that, she’s been a trouble-free cow.” Until this lactation. “We’re having trouble getting her bred. She’s getting to the age where she probably won’t reproduce,” Larry said. The last time the Wistes bred Milly, they used both a Holstein and Norwegian Red bull. Although the Wistes don’t normally crossbreed, they said they were willing to give it a try for Milly. “If a red calf pops outs, we’ll know the Norwegian Red worked,” Katie said with a laugh.

Not one or two, but three generations operate Fehn Dairy Farm
Ken, Mark and Alex keep farm moving forward By andrea borgerding Staff writer
ST. MICHAEL, Minn. – Ken Fehn doesn’t have to go far to see what his son and grandson are up to on the family dairy farm. He just has to walk to the barn where he helps work on the family’s 90-cow dairy, Fehn Dairy Farm, with son, Mark, and grandson, Alex (21), in Wright County near St. Michael, Minn. “It’s a way of life. Mark grew up and he stayed with me and now that Alex is coming in, he’s doing the same,” Ken said. “I enjoy being active and part of the dairy. I’m here all the time. My responsibility is not that heavy anymore.” Ken and Barbara started dairying in 1958 and moved to the current farmstead in 1964. The farm northwest of St. Michael is where Barbara grew up. Ken and Barbara raised five children on the farm-
stead – one of which took to farming from a very early age. “Mark always wanted to ride in the tractors and be with us while we worked,” Barbara said. A very similar trait, Barbara said, could also be seen in her grandson, Alex, when he was just a boy. So it was fitting Fehn Dairy Farm would eventually become a multi-generational operation – worked simultaneously by Ken, Mark and Alex. Mark worked several years off the farm before coming to his father in 1978 and asking to form a partnership to run the dairy. Things went well until 1994, when the Fehns resolve for farming was tested after they lost their cows and barn in a fire. Instead of selling out, they dug in and rebuilt. “He (Mark) said he wanted to milk

The father and son duo worked together until 2005 when Ken retired, although he continued to help with milking up to last year. Today, the dairy’s daily tasks are still completed by Ken, Mark and Alex – three men separated by two generations. “If all we were doing is fighting,” Mark said. “What would we be doing this for? I’m easy going or I wouldn’t be farming.” “There are days when its challenging [working with family],” Alex said. “But we get along and [Ken and Mark] are open
to ideas.” As the younger generation, Mark said it is now Alex’s responsibility to help develop new plans for the farm. “He has to keep bringing in new technology to this operation if he continues to farm,” Mark said. Keeping things running smoothly The Fehns milk 90 cows in a stanchion barn. Alex and employee Jake Vorderbruggen milk the cows with Mark helping switch units and a group of 12 cows. Milly (right) stands next to one of her granddaughters in the 26-stall stanchion barn of Larry and Sharon Wiste, who farm near Spring Grove, Minn. Currently in the herd, Milly has three daughters, two granddaughters and two great granddaughters.
Give Classifieds a try.
But getting calves from Milly hasn’t been an issue in the past, especially with heifers. Two lactations in a row, she had twin heifers. Currently the Wistes’ barn of 26 cows houses seven descendents of Milly – three daughters, two granddaughters and two great granddaughters. “We have also sold some of her offspring privately because we can only milk so many cows,” Sharon said. Her oldest daughter in the barn, Salt, is following in Milly’s hooves. At the age of 9, Salt has produced over 200,000 pounds of milk. The Wistes said the descendants of Milly all have the same average build and are of the similar dispositions. Although no other cow can take Milly’s place. “She’s the mother of the herd and nurtures all the calves born in the pasture,” Sharon said. She also has a calm demeanor. “She’s not a boss cow and never seems to be in a conflict,” Sharon said. She always used to be the first cow to enter the barn, but now with age, she lets other cows be No. 1. “But she can still wiggle her way in first if it is bad weather,” Sharon said. Milly only gets small amounts of special treatment. She is let out of the barn last so she can take her time and she is curry combed every four days like the rest of the herd. “She gets her turn, but she might get it a few extra times,” Katie said. Even if Milly stops reproducing, the Wistes have decided to keep her on the farm until her last day. Then they will find a place to bury her. “We’re just lucky to have her here,” Larry said. “She’s a good cow.”

Alex feeds protein to the cows on the Fehn dairy farm near St. Michael, Minn. He is the latest Fehn to join the family operation.
milking when someone else has time off and when she’s not in school. Before milking, the three Fehns and Vorderbruggen feed the animals, which includes some breeding bulls and steers. During fieldwork, Ken is able to stay in the fields baling or cultivating to get fieldwork done without having to stop to do chores. “Dad did his share of chores,” Mark said with a smile. “He doesn’t have to shut down for chores anymore.” The threesome doesn’t usually have meetings to plan the day. Instead, if the time is right to get some work done, Ken, Mark and Alex, work together to get the job done. “Yesterday, we got done with morning chores and we had time, so we decided to clean out a calf barn,” Mark said. “That’s just the way we get work done.” He added, “We do everything together. Whoever is around does it. It works out.”
Are your girls trying to tell you something?
The future of Fehn Dairy Farm At 21, Alex enjoys farming but is unsure of his future in the family dairy farm. “It doesn’t seem like a job,” Alex said. “It’s nice to work at home and with people you know. But, it would be nice to get a break once in awhile.” “He’s not quite sure about farming yet,” Mark said of his son. “But I think he is liking it more and more. It’s a good lifestyle and you always have a job.” After raising a family and running the family farm for 47 years, Ken can attest to his son’s sentiment to farming. “You are rewarded for doing a good job,” Ken said. “The harder you work, the more you get out of it,” Mark added. “Right now we’re switching 12 cows to buy a new piece of equipment this spring. It’s a reward for being your own boss.” Not getting too far into debt is something both Ken and Mark want to instill in Alex. “You have to make sure you don’t get to the point where you can’t pay your bills,” Mark said. “I’m starting to understand that,” Alex said. One thing Alex will always have is two other generations to lean on. “I have no interest in moving to town or leaving the farm,” Ken said. “I help with whatever they need. It’s just a natural thing.”
You’ll all rest easier with SuperStall.™ When they’re not in the parlor, cows need to be in their stalls, lying down, for maximum nutrient utilization and milk production. SuperStall encourages lying time with a body-hugging memory foam designed to remain “permanently soft” hour after hour, year after year. Unlike sand bedding, SuperStall’s waterproof rubber top cover is super-easy to clean, with no need for expensive manure separators, sand slingers or dreaded hand work. Every SuperStall system comes with a 22-year track record and a 5-year warranty. Is the cost of feeding frequency worth it? Given the waning days of winter, one may conclude that dairy calves are beyond the added nutritional requirements of cold-weather feeding. Is this the time of the year that calf managers could start saving labor? The answer is, “no.” According to the National Research Council’s “Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle,” 2001 edition, energy requirements for calves increase below 68 F. In the U.S., nighttime temBy J.W. Schroeder peratures above 68 F are not the NDSU Extension norm; most regions meet this criterion only a few days during the summer. So even though the days are getting warmer, don’t be too hasty in reducing those much needed nutrients to calves. Feeding liquid to calves, whether milk, transition milk or milk replacer, usually is time-consuming and labor-intensive. This can become a significant expense for some dairy producers, particularly if labor is at a premium on the farm. One method for improving labor efficiency in the calf-rearing enterprise is to reduce the number of daily feedings from two to one. In most cases, feeding once a day means combining the amount normally fed twice daily into one feeding.
What effect does once-daily feeding of liquid have on the calf? From the standpoint of digestibility, metabolizability and growth rates, it does not appear to have a significant effect. Researchers in the United Kingdom found feeding frequency (one, two, four or six times daily) had no effect on growth rates or energy balance when calves were less than 28 days of age. Note, however, that the researchers in these studies fed whole milk or a milk replacer that contained casein and clotted in the abomasum. Clotted casein is released slowly and provides a more continuous source of nutrients throughout the day. Researchers have not determined whether using modern milk replacers based on whey proteins (that don’t clot in the rumen) will provide the same nutrient flow during the day when those replacers are fed once daily. A lack of abomasal clotting may result in a period of nutrient deprivation during the evening. However, using whole or waste milk in a once-daily feeding system has worked satisfactorily, but less so in the winter. Typically, one feeding of milk or milk replacer is offered in the morning. If calves have been fed twice daily for any length of time, you should expect to hear significant “complaining” when calves are moved to once-daily feeding. Many producers don’t feed once daily simply because the calves complain too much.
On the other hand, research at the University of Wisconsin found that calves fed 2.5 pounds of 28:20 milk replacer three times a day instead of twice weighed 10.3 pounds more, were 1.7 centimeters taller and showed greater feed efficiency. The milk replacer powder was diluted to 17 percent solids. These calves were more likely able to obtain higher growth rates and feeding efficiencies due to a more constant source of nutrients throughout the day. A recent nationwide study by Merck Animal Health found that the number of producers feeding three times a day is increasing. In 2007, the National Animal Health Monitoring System found only 5.4 percent of calf raisers were feeding three times a day. A more recent study (2010) revealed eight percent of calf raisers were feeding three times a day, with 14 percent doing so in the winter. While both feeding programs have merit, management limitations matter. Compelling evidence indicates labor cost needs to be considered when thinking about implementing a three-times-per-day feeding system. However, more efficient animals could offset the additional labor cost. Additionally, the Wisconsin study found that calves fed three times per day were more likely to complete the first lactation, potentially reducing future culling costs. OK, now what? Well, if your management allows it, consider a three-times-per-day feeding program, especially in the winter when calves require a constant source of energy in their liquid diets to sustain maintenance and growth. Note that this concept presents the same allocation of feed, but it is just delivered three times a day. Feeding three times a day will optimize your chance of raising healthy calves that grow into productive, lactating cows. Nonetheless, feeding three times a day results in a cost of time in the form of labor. To offset that cost, some dairy producers have introduced computerized calf feeders, which allow them to divide liquid diets into multiple smaller meals. Canadian studies have demonstrated that calves will nurse four to eight times daily. Researchers believe that calves instinctively feed more often to maximize nutrient availability. Because automatic calf feeders can produce that level of delivery, they are an option to consider. Recently, several North Dakota dairy farms installed such systems. During a producer panel session at the last dairy convention, some of these dairy producers noted that to implement this technology successfully, computerized feeding systems require a shift in management priorities, including more frequent observations of calves and the adoption of protocols to monitor the mixing of the powder, temperature calibration and equipment sanitation to make sure they are done correctly. One final caution: Calves are especially sensitive to the overall level of management. Research has shown repeatedly that calves are healthier when they are monitored frequently. While feeding milk to calves once daily, or investing in a technology and/ or letting the computer do it, may not affect the digestibility of nutrients markedly, less monitoring can lead to increased health problems. While both feeding options may save labor, increased morbidity and mortality resulting from decreased observation may increase costs.

New CRP general signup announced for March The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced they will conduct a four-week Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) general signup, beginning on March 12 and ending on April 6, 2012. Currently, about 1.6 million acres are enrolled in CRP in Minnesota; and with an estimated 292,000 acres set to expire on Sept. 30, 2012. CRP has a 25year legacy of successfully protecting the nation’s natural resources through voluntary participation, while providing significant economic and environmental benefits to rural communities across the United States. The CRP general signup is a competitive process in which each contract offer will compete with all other offers. All acres offered for CRP enrollment are weighted according to the Environmental Benefits Index (EBI). The Farm Service Agency (FSA) collects data for each EBI factor based on the relative environmental benefits for the land offered. Eligible land must have been cropped between 2002 - 2007 or have a current CRP contract that is due to expire on September 30, 2012. Landowners are encouraged to contact the Stearns County FSA at 320-251-7800 Ext. 2 and set up an appointment to discuss their options and ensure they obtain the highest EBI score, thereby improving the chances of a contract offer being accepted. One way landowners can significantly improve their CRP contract offer is by including a pollinator habitat component or converting old non-native CRP cover to a native grass and wildflower cover. Higher EBI scores are awarded for these cover types. Up to 50 percent cost share is available to help establish the approved cover. Pheasants need habitat featuring a diverse native grass and flower component. Young pheasant chicks survive almost exclusively on a diet of insects. These insects are dependent upon a diverse mix of forbs in and around quality nesting cover. Likewise, a diverse mix of flowering plants creates the best brood cover to allow pheasant chicks to move through habitat at ground level, while having protection from avian predators above. Additionally, current CRP participants with contracts expiring this fall may make new contract offers. Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever encourage landowners planning on letting their current CRP contracts expire to consider offering at least partial reenrollment of their acreage. This helps increase yields to their cropland, while maintaining water quality and wildlife benefits. All programs and services of the Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District are available without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political beliefs, and marital or familial status

Gold Spike™
Highly Concentrated Capsules
A one-two punch against mastitis With no milk or meat withholding, Gold Spike™ Highly Concentrated Capsules provide powerful Smart bacteria that combat mastitis and high somatic cell count (SCC) by fighting microscopic foreign pathogens. Smart bacteria combat this assault by helping cows respond through the appropriate actions. Remember that not all foreign pathogen infections require the entire army of T Cells to defeat them. This over response can actually cause excess inflammation, edema, and even auto toxicity from the cells dying. Gold Spike™ Highly Concentrated Capsules solve this problem by delivering a one-two punch against foreign pathogens.

AgStar’s Annual Women’s Seminars, March 12-14 Recognizing the important roles women play in agriculture—from business managers and owners to caregivers—AgStar Financial Services is pleased to honor women of agriculture through its annual series of educational seminars just for them. With six seminars located throughout AgStar’s service area, female farm clients have many opportunities to sit down, relax and laugh and learn with other women. Nationally known ag advocate, Jolene Brown, and Kathy Petersen, founder of People Works, Inc. will each present interactive and energetic sessions on planning for your business’ future and finding happiness among the craziness of life. Brown’s presentation “If We Huff and Puff, Will We Blow Your House Down?” will cover how to build a strong foundation for a productive and profitable family business. Peterson’s presentation “Finding Happiness in the Craziness of Life” will teach attendees how to be happy through examples and real-life stories. The seminars all begin with registration from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Each seminar will conclude at 3 p.m. Listed below are the dates and locations. March 12 – Holiday Inn, St. Cloud, Minn.; March 13 – Stout Ale House, Menomonie, Wis.; March 14 – International Event Center, Rochester, Minn. The seminars are free of charge to AgStar clients and one guest thanks to a grant from the AgStar Fund for Rural America. A continental breakfast and lunch are provided. Please register at least one week in advance of the seminar you plan to attend by calling 866-577-1831. Seminar on benefits, management of Genuity® Roundup Ready® Alfalfa, March 13 A free educational seminar will be held for farmers interested in learning about production practices and the benefits of growing Genuity® Roundup Ready® Alfalfa. The event is taking place Tuesday, March 13 at the University of WisconsinRiver Falls. Farmers interested in attending also can register online at www.genuity.com/AlfalfaWI. The presentation will include academics and industry spokespersons discussing practices for optimum alfalfa stand establishment and management, dairy rations and weed management recommendations. Each program will also feature a panel of area farmers discussing their experience using the Genuity Roundup Ready Alfalfa system, which offers unsurpassed weed control to provide the opportunity for higher yield and improved feed quality.
The half-day events run from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include lunch. Farmers interested in attending can call (314) 236-6902.
Willmar Ag Show, March 13-14 The West Central Ag Sales Association will be sponsoring the Willmar Ag Show on March 13-14 at the Willmar Civic Center. There will be seminars both days of the show. On Tuesday at 9:30 am TMDL water topics will be addressed with emphasis on how it will change the way you currently farm. Roughly 40 percent of the water bodies in MN are considered impaired, and as the methods to improve quality are discussed, Minnesota’s farmers will be impacted. Many of the proposed fixes would require farming practices to change. The process used by the MPCA to identify the sources and thereby solutions to water quality problems is called the TMDL for Total Maximum Daily Load. Once the groundwork is done to identify the source of problems, all future efforts to correct them will be based on this allocation. Farmers have firsthand knowledge of what is going on with the landscape, and a huge stake in the outcome. This is a chance to become aware of the process and learn how and why they need to be at the table early in the process. Scheduled speakers include Warren Farmo, Minnesota Agricultural Water Resources Center, David Craigmile, Dawson area farmer and member of the Lac Qui Parle Watershed district board, and Steve Commerford, New Ulm crop consultant. On both days the MN Highway Patrol will also have a 11 a.m. seminar. Topics will center on new and existing laws and regulations as they relate to your farming operation. Tri-State Robotic Milking Seminar, March 14 Speakers for the Tri-State Robotic Milking Seminar include: “Barn Layout and Design for Robots”, by Dr. David Kammel, UW-Extension; “Economics of Robotic Milking Management of Robotic Milking”, by Dr. Larry Tranel, ISU Extension and a Producer Panel. The seminar will be at Belmont Convention Center in Belmont, Wis. at the intersection of Hwys G and 151. To register, call Larry Tranel at 563-583-6496 or Dave Wachter at 608-7232125.
Udder Dissection Clinic, March 21 The U of MN Extension - Carver County is hosting an Udder Dissection Clinic on Wednesday, March 21. The event will start at 10 a.m. and take place at Mayer Community Center at 413 Blue Jay Avenue, Mayer, Minn. This will be a hands-on clinic to look at udder health and its effects on milk quality. Brant Groen, Director of Dairy Wellness for Form-A-Feed, will use actual udder tissue to demonstrate key management impacts. There is no fee to attend this clinic. Please RSVP by Monday, March 19 to assist with meal count by calling the Carver County Extension office at 952-4665300. Press ‘0’ to speak with support staff. For more information, please contact Laura Kieser by phone 952-466-5306 or email torb0022@umn.edu. Street Sweeper Brushes For Backscratchers

Head of Outstanding 317 High Producing Holstein Cattle
NOTE: This is a very good herd of large frame, well uddered, high producing Holstein cattle. This herd has been on test since 1985 with current owner records indicating a herd average of 2X 22,988 milk, 3.6% 770 fat and 3.1% 702 protein, current tank average 78 pounds. No BST. Several quality milk awards over the past several years with the 2011 yearly SCC average 126,000. Last test SCC an amazing 106,000. Many cows and heifers recently fresh or due soon after sale time. All cows housed in a free stall facility and milked in a double 4 flat parlor allowing easy transition to any type facility. Artificial breeding to the breed’s leading sires along with selected herd sires from the famous Goebel Bros. Dairy used since the Wensmanns began dairying. AI sires and service sires include, but not limited to: Bomaz, Deuce, Graybil, Jock, Omar, Reuben, Lyle, Zillion, Rolex and Dex, among others. The Wensmanns have always chosen sires that transmit superior traits directed to feet, legs, udders and durability. A strenuous herd health program through the Cold Spring, MN vet clinic in place for many years. All cattle vaccinated and boosted seasonally. All dry cows dry treated and given the Scourboss vaccination at dry off. Cattle will be TB tested post sale for out-of-state buyers requiring such testing. Hooves trimmed regularly. Along with a fancy set of young cows, we offer an exceptional group of bred and open heifers that are sired by leading sires and out of top Wensmann dams. If you are in need of high quality dairy replacements in volume, please mark this date on your calendar and make plans now to attend the Wensmann complete dairy dispersal auction. Thank you! NOTE: While we often are able to provide all breeding and production information on the sale brochure, with this number of cattle that will not be possible. However we will provide a catalog upon request that will include all information. Please call (320) 352-3803 or www.midamericanauctioninc.com to obtain your catalog today.
