Expo is back New attractions will enhance event after year off By Sarah Colburn Contributing Writer
The 54th World Dairy Expo is ready to welcome tens of thousands of people back from around the globe for an in-person event in Madison, Wisconsin. Expo is the world’s largest dairy-centric trade show and is filled with dairy and forage seminars hosted by industry leaders and farmers doing hands-on work. “We’re thrilled for people to be back in Madison,” said Katie Schmitt, World Dairy Expo communications manager. “We’re putting together an incredible event. There’s a lot of excitement to being back together again.” After a cancellation of the 2020 show due to COVID-19 restrictions, Schmitt said this year’s show is better than ever. Expo’s leadership team used its time during the past year as an opportunity to focus in on the strategic plan that guides the organization. Instead of handling the day-to-day aspects of show preparation, the team was able to plan for the long-term health and future of Expo. “It really gave us the chance to look at the

Attendees can reserve tickets at worlddairyexpo.com.
“The Sunset Celebration is a chance for people to celebrate the reunion that is Expo,” Schmitt said. “It’s a chance for us to thank our attendees and exhibitors and stakeholders.” Career Connections This year will feature dedicated time to Turn to EXPO | Page 2

Con nued from EXPO | Page 1 enhancing youth events at Expo including the creation of Career Connections, an event for students to connect with professionals who are hiring on their farms or in the industry. The networking event will begin at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 1. Companies can submit open positions, and students and young professionals can pre-register on the World Dairy Expo website. Career Connections will have a free-flow structure that allows students to talk oneon-one with trade show exhibitors, farms and industry companies seeking to hire. “It’s a great chance for not only students to leverage the fact the global dairy industry is here,” Schmitt said. “But also a great opportunity for our companies and farmers throughout the industry to find people to hire.” The event is open to high school and college students, and those a few years post-college seeking entry-level positions. Students should bring resumes or business cards to exchange their contact information, and dress in business casual attire. As the agriculture industry faces a labor shortage, Schmitt said this networking time is important. “We see World Dairy Expo as a place that can help bridge some of those gaps and provide some of those connections,” she said.

Expo en Español This new experience, designed for Spanish-speaking dairy owners, managers and mid-managers, allows attendees to receive information in Spanish. Topics will include “Five Practices to Strengthen a Diverse Farm Team,” “How to Excel to a Leadership Position” and a panel discussion titled “Strategies to Have Engaged Employees and Reduce Turnover.” Hosted at 2 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, each session will include a presentation and a time for questions. Presentations will be hosted by people who are fluent in Spanish. “These seminars are designed to focus a lot on the human resource side of building strong farm teams,” Schmitt said.
Tanbark Talks Attendees can start their day at Expo with a Tanbark Talk Wednesday through Friday at 8 a.m. in The Tanbark, now located in the Arena Building. Wednesday’s topic is “Farming Forward Through Enhanced Innovation and Farm Profitability.” A live taping of the U.S. Farm Report is set for Thursday. Friday brings agricultural economist Damian Mason to the stage for his presentation, “This Business Called Agriculture.”
Tech Spotlight Ten dairy technology start-up companies will pitch their product ideas to dairy producers during World Dairy Expo. The technology includes everything from robots to cameras to sensors, and the advances are meant to help producers with things like feed bulk management, cow behavior monitoring, cow health, milk quality, manure treatment and labor efficiencies. The Tech Spotlight begins at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 28. In addition, there is a virtual component prior to Expo that will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 16. Event registration is available at www.wdetechspotlight.com. The virtual component prior to Expo will allow attendees to get a sneak peek at who the companies are. During the presentations, the companies will showcase their innovations. There will be a panel discussion with industry experts. In addition to other changes at World Dairy Expo, this year’s event will be live-streamed for people who are not comfortable traveling to Madison. There will be Dairy Cattle Show coverage as well as coverage of the educational components during the week of Expo. To access the virtual stream, visit www.worlddairyexpo.com and click on ExpoTV. The livestream is free to watch. For those attending in person, Schmitt said there is a mobile event app that includes interactive maps, live Dairy Cattle Show results and the ability to schedule meetings with exhibitors. The app is free and can be downloaded through a device’s app store.

Ten Finns Creamery will showcase how it sells A2 milk By Sarah Colburn Contributing Writer
MENAHGA, Minn. – Hendrickson Dairy and Ten Finns Creamery in Menahga, Minnesota, specializes in creating milk that people with food sensitives can enjoy.
“It’s fun to help others out like that,” Joel Hendrickson said. Hendrickson and his wife, Amanda, run the business along with their 11 children, who are depicted in a Scandinavian cartoon on each and every milk carton – a throwback to their family heritage. The Hendricksons are the epitome of a true family farm, and a few years ago they narrowed their focus to providing and processing A2 milk. This year, the family is providing a virtual tour of their facility at noon Oct. 1 as part of World Dairy Expo Virtual
Farm Tours. Conventional milk, Hendrickson said, has two forms of beta-casein protein A1 and A2, the first being harder for some people to digest. A handful of years ago, after reading about the differences in proteins, Hendrickson had his herd genetically tested and found more than half of the cows had the A2 protein. He whittled down the herd to the 58 with the protein, and today, he is milking 135 Turn to HENDRICKSONS | Page 5

Additionally, they have a relationship with Co-Op Partners Warehouse of St. Paul that distributes their goods, and they can now be found as far away as Michigan and Iowa. Hendrickson said the company is currently in talks with Kowalski’s Markets in the Twin Cities and if the partnership works out would distribute its goods to that chain through Russ Davis Wholesale. The Ten Finns Creamery is processing roughly 400 gallons of milk a week through its on-site facility. They are sending the remainder of the product to Nelson Creamery for processing. They sell whole milk, 2% milk, chocolate milk and butter, all of the A2 variety. The A2 designation was a way for the Hendricksons to secure their future as a farm. As they watched other, small dairy farms fold, Hendrickson searched for an innovative way to stay in business. “We take pride in trying to remain a small, family farm,” Hendrickson said. “That’s the whole idea of the creamery. We have something we built here so the kids can have a future in dairy and still remain as a small, famTurn to HENDRICKSONS | Page 6

ily farm.” The Hendricksons’ children help on the farm in a number of ways and that has allowed the family to stay true to its roots. The kids drive tractor, feed the cows, milk the cows and clean the facility. Two of the eldest daughters, Maddie, 14, and Julia, 12, assist Hendrickson in the creamery, processing the milk and packaging it. The two also write the receipts and invoicing for the stores. The Hendricksons’ 15-year-old son does a lot of the field work and the feeding of cows. “They get to see real life lessons,” Hendrickson said. The milk that is delivered straight from the creamery is often driven by a family friend’s daughter and Hendrickson’s father. On the land, the children not only learn what it takes to run a business, but they learn about life cycles as calves are born, crops grow and cows die. They learn about food safety, too, and dealing with the public, Hendrickson said. “I think there are a lot of lessons to be learned that a lot of people never ever get to experience,” Hendrickson said.

With 6,500 milking cows, Austin will explain how BioFiltro’s worm-powered wastewater system removes 90%-99% of the nutrients from his green water, builds soil by generating worm castings, and produces 6-8 carbon credits per milking cow. DCC Waterbeds were recently installed in the eight freestall barns to provide cow comfort that is low-maintenance to allow for a cleaner, simpler manure waste stream.

I like to see the offspring of certain bulls to help me decide which bulls to use. It is also fun to visit with other dairy farmers from across the country and world, and talk to them about practices or products they use or recommend. All the hard work, dedication and luck that leads up to that one moment when you step foot on the colored shavings for the first time is an experience I don’t think anyone forgets.
Chris Schulze Holland, Minnesota Pipestone County 750 cows How many years have you attended World Dairy Expo, and why do you attend? This will be my eighth year. I go to Expo for the cattle shows and the networking opportunities.
What would you say to other dairy producers to encourage them to attend World Dairy Expo? Make time to get away and just go. The networking opportunities are endless, and you never know what you will learn or who you will meet. If the cow show is not your thing, the trade show has a lot to offer as well. I have never met anyone who has been disappointed that they made the trip to Madison, Wisconsin.

Kevin Fossum Waterville, Iowa Allamakee County 200 cows How many years have you attended World Dairy Expo, and why do you attend? We do not get there every year but have gone quite a few years for at least one day. We go to see what is new, or if I am looking for something specific I could use on the farm, we might go to check it out. What does it mean to you that World Dairy Expo is back in 2021? It is important that it is back so we can see what is new and actually talk to the representatives without them coming to the farm or us going to them. You can see more than one company in a short time at World Dairy Expo. I have missed being able to do that.
What would you say to other dairy producers to encourage them to attend World Dairy Expo? They should check out the exhibit buildings and have plenty of time to do it. One day probably is not enough, even if it is hard to get away.
Tell us about your farm and your plans for your dairy this fall. We have 800 acres of cropland: hay/alfalfa, corn and oats. My wife, Julie, and I have three kids who help. The oldest works in town, and two are in high school. We bought the farm from my father. We milk Holstein cows in a double-8 parlor. I purchased a manure spreader last winter to use this fall, and I would like to know where it is. That is one of the things I want to ask the company when I see them at Expo.

Ben Verthein, pictured with his dad, Steve Altura, Minnesota Winona County 630 cows How many years have you attended World Dairy Expo, and why do you attend? I have been attending for the past 15 years. It gives me an opportunity to see up and coming things the industry has to offer. I used to only look at commercial exhibits, peak in the cattle barns and not take in any of the shows. This year, I hope to watch more of the shows, especially the Holstein show. What does it mean to you that World Dairy Expo is back in 2021? Hopefully it will help us get back to a bit of normalcy. It gives us a chance to see peers in the industry and talk with them in person. What are three things you are looking forward to doing this year at World Dairy Expo? The first thing I want to do is watch a few of the shows. We have gotten into the registered showing side of the industry and bought a few embryos from cows that will be showing there. It will be fun to watch to see how they do. The second thing I want to do is meet more people in the show business. And, I also look forward to eating the ice cream.

What information or product do you hope to take home to improve your dairy? I want to look more on the genetics side of the industry. We are dabbling in genomics, which is a new and always changing area of the industry. I hope to gather more information to see how we will continue to use it on our farm. What is your favorite memory from World Dairy Expo? I do not have any one particular memory that stands out, but I hope to have one this year. In the past, I would only attend Expo for a day – driving down with buddies in the morning and coming home that night. This year, I will be down there for a few days. What would you say to other dairy producers to encourage them to attend World Dairy Expo? It is a good place to see what is new, available and upcoming in the industry. It is also another good excuse to get off the farm and see something new. Tell us about your farm and your plans for your dairy this fall. I farm in partnership with my dad, Steve. We have 730 cows and raise our replacements. Bulls are sold at about 1 week old. We own about 1,300 acres. This fall, we hope to put up more corn and corn silage so we don’t have to buy it like we have been doing. We do not have any big plans for buildings this fall, but sometime soon, we need to replace our shop that burned down earlier this year. We will continue working on the herd’s reproduction and put in more embryos. My daughter got into showing through 4-H, and it has snowballed from there with us buying more registered animals. Hopefully we will get a few good calves from the embryos.

Helping create a better industry World Dairy Expo honors Milk Source LLC partners By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
KAUKAUNA, Wis. – Being satisfied with the status quo is not something that fits into the nature of any of the three partners of Milk Source LLC. Milk Source, of Kaukauna, was founded in 1999 by partners Jim Ostrom, John Vosters and Todd Willer. And, some consider Milk Source to be synonymous with success in the dairy industry. That history led to the trio being selected as the 2020 World Dairy Expo Dairy Producers of the Year. Doing things right and never settling for what others might consider good enough is an utmost priority for all three partners. “We have gotten a lot of lessons on having to be intentional about getting better,” Vosters said. “When we think we know how to do it, someone else always knows how to do it better. We have to evolve, and we will always have to continue to evolve or we will get left behind. This is a fast-moving industry.” The venture that is now Milk Source sprouted from the small dairy farm Voster’s parents, Ted and Dorothy, established in 1965. In 1994, Vosters and Ostrom formed their initial partnership, expanding the herd from 180 to 600 cows. As the new millennium approached, 1999 brought more growth. Willer joined Vosters and Ostrom to create Milk Source LLC. “That was right at the beginning of really building milking parlors in Wisconsin,” Vosters said. “Wisconsin was quite a ways behind on that trend. We eventually grew from a 100-cow tiestall barn to a 100-stall parallel parlor. That growth was pretty eye-opening.” Willer agreed. He said ideas in Wisconsin’s dairy industry were starting to catch up, placing greater focus on cow comfort and building more naturally-ventilated freestall barns.

The partners of Milk Source LLC – (from le ) John Vosters, Todd Willer and Jim Ostrom – are honored as the 2020 World Dairy Expo Dairy Producers of the Year. “Thinking back to what the Tidy View freestall barn was before we started expanding there, it was just one lean-to built on to another lean-to, on to another lean-to,” said Vosters, recalling the older facility. “It had windows in it and high sides and concrete beds. It was really pretty awful for the cows, thinking back.” The road to where they are currently has not always
been the smoothest, and the partners admit there are things they might have done differently; however, they also said making those mistakes had a positive edge because they used their experiences to make themselves and their company stronger.

Why do you attend World Dairy Expo? “It is always fun to be strolling through and see an old friend or a vendor you stop by every year and learn something new from.” Caryn Sager Kirchhayn, Wisconsin Washington County 70 cows How many years have you attended World Dairy Expo, and why do you attend? I have been going to World Dairy Expo for over 20 years. I was born a city girl, and the first time I went was before my husband and I got married. When he asked me to go with him, I seriously thought it would be a day-
long snooze fest for me, but it was an opportunity to spend time with him. Boy was I wrong. Look at all the free stuff everyone gives away: hats, pens, mini screwdrivers, mugs, cups and key chains galore. I signed up for every raffle. I had bags and bags of stuff. I have pens from that very first trip, but I am much more discerning about what giveaways I bring home now. What does it mean to you that World Dairy Expo is back in 2021? I have a good friend who I go to Expo with. We look forward to spending the day together and sharing farm stories. We did not get that day away last year, so we are looking forward to it this year.
What are three things you are looking forward to doing this year at World Dairy Expo? I cannot wait to walk through the barns again, and get a shake and grilled cheese sandwich from the University of Wisconsin Dairy Club. It is always fun to be strolling through and see an old friend or a vendor you stop by every year and learn something new from, or to see an idea that you can bring home and put into practice.
What information or product do you hope to take home to improve your dairy? I tend to gravitate toward vendors that have information on calf care and health. If you can give an animal a good start when they are young, it makes it that much easier to keep her healthy and productive throughout her life.

What is your favorite memory from World Dairy Expo? Some of my favorite memories have been when John and I took some of our young helpers to Expo. They enjoyed working with cows but did not think they wanted to milk cows for the rest of their lives. There are so many opportunities in agriculture, and WDE exposes you to so many options – animal science, nutrition, agronomy, equipment, custom field work, sales, four-year college programs, tech schools; it’s all there.
What would you say to other dairy producers to encourage them to attend World Dairy Expo? It is a great learning experience for farmers young and old, agriculture newbies and the girlfriend trying to spend time with her man.
Tell us about your farm and your plans for your dairy this fall. At Sager Happy Holsteins, my husband, John, and I milk about 70 cows in a tiestall barn and farm 330 acres. We rented a farm in Mequon for 15 years and then moved our cows to Kirchhayn. After renting here for about seven years, we were able to sign on the dotted line and purchase the farm this spring. While I have a fulltime job off the farm, I help in the evenings and on weekends. We are grateful to have help from family, particularly John’s sister, Jennifer Zimmerman. Besides the typical fall harvest stuff, we are looking forward to putting up a curtain on our heifer shed this fall. It will be nice to not have to put up the sheets of plywood before the snow flies.

Employees listen in a training session at Milk Source LLC. Developing leadership skills among their employees plays an integral role in the future successes of the farm business. “Over the years, we grew and grew and we added sites,” Ostrom said. “I would say we have made almost any mistake you could make in the dairy industry, but we learned.” Milk Source is now made up of dairies located in Wisconsin, Michigan and Missouri as well as specialized calf and heifer raising facilities. With the company’s wide reach, the partners each take their responsibilities to the industry, the environment and the global community seriously. “It’s really a neat thing if we look at the global or climate impact of dairy or beef production,” Vosters said. “The United States is the best in the world at it, and I think the U.S. advantage is gaining faster than the rest of the world because of our free market competitiveness. Maintaining that will absolutely be a challenge.” Willer compared the gains made in the environmental impact of the dairy industry with the environmental impact of other industries. “The productivity gains we have made have been phenomenal,” Willer said. “When you talk about sustainability, how much nutrition per acre do we create now compared to what we used to? If the automobile industry followed the trajectory we have, imagine how many miles per gallon we could be getting from our cars now.” The three agreed it is no longer simply enough to quietly go about their business, continually implementing more and more sustainable measures on their farms. “The sentiment is that we are not environmentally friendly, and we have to take every opportunity to educate those outside of agriculture about the truths of our sustainability efforts,” Willer said.
“There is so much purposely negative marketing against our industry. We all have a responsibility to try and combat that.” Acknowledging the importance of educating neighbors, consumers and legislators about the proactive practices they and other dairy farmers across the country are implementing has become a priority for the partners. “We think our large farms that we have, particularly in Wisconsin, are very environmentally friendly, but the message from the higher courts has been that we need more oversight and restrictions,” Vosters said. Ostrom agreed. “There is a disconnect between reality and legal-political perceptions of dairy farming, and people in all aspects of dairy farming feel the brunt of that,” Ostrom said. “It is very alarming, the misinformation and how policymakers are making changes for us and our industry without truly understanding. We need to educate both consumers and policymakers about what we do and why we do it.” The partners at Milk Source take a personal interest in helping provide education about the dairy industry and the never-ending quest for bettering their practices by involvement in a variety of both dairy-related and civic organizations. They open their farms for tours, hosting thousands of visitors each year, as well as supporting youth programs and organizations to help grow the future leaders of the industry. “The narrative is that bigger is less sustainable and less environmentally friendly,” Vosters said. “Looking back at our history and growth, the reality is that we have become better as we have grown.”

Garry Hansen delivers and stocks milk into the cooler of a local retailer. Hansen owns Meadow Fresh Jersey Milk in Mulino, Oregon.
Hansen finds way to diversify dairy By Sarah Colburn Contributing Writer
MULINO, Ore. – Rich, creamy milk streams down the inside of each half-gallon glass bottle at Garry’s Meadow Fresh Jersey Milk in Mulino, Oregon.
The glass bottles not only protect and cool the flavor of the fresh Jersey milk, they are representative of Garry Hansen’s approach to his business and his Lady-Lane Farm. “We knew we weren’t going to go organic,” Hansen said. “We had to do something that would set us apart from everybody else.” The milk is derived from the 90 Jersey cows Hansen milks daily. The product, he said, is higher in protein, calcium, vitamin A and vitamins B1 and B2, and it has more lactase and a higher milk fat content than some of its conventional rivals. Hansen will be talking about his business approach and marketing strategy during a panel discussion, “Value-added Products and Niche Marketing” at 1 p.m. Oct. 1 at World Dairy Expo. Hansen knows his cows, calling them each by name and explaining their relation to one another. Klassy (referred to as Mama), her daughter Kassie, Kassie’s daughters Kappuccino and Kahlua, and their two daughters K-Cup and Kreme. The milk the cows at Lady-Lane Farm create and the glass containers the milk is bottled in, set the product apart from others on the store shelf. At first, as Hansen launched his glass bottle processing, he did not understand who would be buying his high

fat milk which, he said, was detrimental to the launch of the business venture. Local farmers markets, Hansen said, were instrumental in determining his customer base: food-conscious customers looking for more protein and a minimally-processed product. His first year he did one farmers market, the second year he did four – raising the profile of his brand.

“Once a person gets Jersey milk into their mouth, it’s pretty easy to sell,” he said. The main question Hansen gets from customers is whether the milk is organic – it is not, he said. “They associate the term organic with quality, and they want to know why it’s not organic,” Hansen said. When Hansen explains his process and the way he treats, feeds and cares for his animals, he said customers begin to understand the product. The uniqueness and quality of the milk and his packaging, Hansen said, have allowed him to set a higher price point than conventional milk, avoiding some of the volatility in market pricing. Over took 18 months, Hansen phased out the Holsteins and placed his focus solely on the Jerseys. Hansen said beginning the processing and distribution was the hardest part of the changeover because it meant he had to put in facetime with potential distributors, taking him away from

milking. “I knew I wasn’t going to be able to be in that barn with the cows,” he said. “It was difficult for me to do, to step away from the cows.” Hansen hired a part-time milker who is still with him today, and now, his wife, Lacey Hansen, handles all of the processing. She also handles inventory management and works the farmers markets every Saturday. Hansen has a full-time herdsman to help care for the cows. Now that the Lady-Lane Farm milk is more well known, Hansen is back to milking. “It was huge when I stepped out of the barn and started visiting wholesale accounts personally,” Hansen said. “You can trust me to put a food in your household that’s wholesome and healthy and produced right.” As the operation has grown, so has Hansen’s product line. He began selling direct to consumers from the farm in April 2020 with the addition of a small farm stand. In October, he added ice cream to the product line, and a few months ago, he started making cheese. The Hansens have ramped up to six farmers markets a week, and they plan to expand their on-site retail business in the future. They have plans to erect a retail building and bring customers to the farm, providing an agri-tourism opportunity. Down the road Hansen said perhaps they will add a pumpkin patch and even a corn maze. “People know what they want,” he said. “There’s an ever-increasing need for knowledge with these consumers in where their food is coming from. When we get them out here, 90% of them are hooked.”

Below is information about the 2021 Virtual Farm Tours.
Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 12 p.m. Newalta Dairy LLC Pipestone, Minnesota Sponsored by: Milk Specialties Global Animal Nutrition
After moving from Canada to Pipestone, Minnesota in 2006, Newalta Dairy LLC has been investing in animals and facilities to improve safety, animal welfare,
and overall efficiencies on their dairy. Owned and operated by John and Berlinda Vander Wal, along with their son, Ian, and daughter, Alisha Ekkel, and her husband, Trevor, management decisions on capital spending are made based on long-term goals and future returns to better ensure the success of the operation. Milking 3,300 Holstein cows in a double-40 parallel parlor and a double-12 parallel parlor, three times a day, Newalta Dairy LLC has a rolling herd average of 27,000 pounds of milk with 3.9% fat and 3.2% protein. Their cows are housed in a series of free-stall barns that rely on tunnel and natural ventilation. Calves are sent to a heifer raiser in Kansas and are brought back to Minnesota two months before calving. Newalta Dairy LLC focuses their breeding program on balancing type and production throughout their herd. Newalta Dairy LLC also farms 1,200 acres of corn, alfalfa, rye, sorghum and grass, and uses cover crops to help with soil erosion. They are also involved in their community through 4-H, the American Dairy Association, and DHIA, and have previously been awarded Pipestone County Farm Family of the year. Newalta Dairy LLC is a prime example of a dairy that will continue to be successful in the coming generations.
Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. Royal Dairy Royal City, Washington Sponsored by: BioFiltro and Advanced Comfort Technology, Inc.
With 6,000 cows in their milking herd, Royal Dairy LLC has taken their environmental efforts to new heights. Royal Dairy LLC, operated by Austin Allred and his family, values keeping their cows happy and healthy, families wholesome and strong, employees motivated and fulfilled, and the environment clean and sustainable. Allred’s work, along with key strategic partnerships, is leading the change for dairy farmers and their relationship with the environment. Royal Dairy LLC utilizes BioFiltro’s worm digestive systems to remove 99% of water contaminants in their wastewater that is later used as clean water suitable for reuse on their farm. The herd, consisting of Jerseys, Holsteins and Angus crosses, averages 4.95% fat and 3.50% protein. Royal Dairy LLC’s herd is milked twice a day and uses sexed semen when doing embryo/

IVF work. Much of the herd is housed in eight freestall barns with Advanced Comfort Technology’s DCC Waterbeds. These long lasting and low maintenance products provide cow comfort and allow for a cleaner, simpler manure waste stream. The Allred family is heavily involved in the community and is extremely active on social media. Winner of the 2018 Outstanding Dairy Farm Sustainability Award, Royal Dairy LLC and the Allred family continuously strive to implement sustainable dairy management practices in a way that defines the future of dairy farming.
Thursday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. Steinhurst Dairy LLC Creston, Ohio Sponsored by: Purina Animal Nutrition, LLC
Throughout seven generations, Kurt Steiner, his uncle, John, and brother, Eric, have seen their share of change, always welcoming innovations to bring more modern approaches to their dairy. One of the family's aspirations is to not
only run a profitable business, but to also maintain and improve an operation of which the next generation will be proud of. Christian, Kurt and Robin’s oldest son, is now working full time on the farm. The Steiner family recently tore down old dairy facilities and built a new barn to modernize their milking operation. Kurt's philosophy is to “always grow from within and with what we have,” and this has stayed true as a long list of farm improvements have been made over the past 20 years. At Steinhurst Dairy, decision making with the support of their nutritionist and veterinarian have been standard practice for many years. However, Kurt has taken this to the next level to react to the markets and make critical decisions more quickly. Steiner and his family have expanded their team of experts to include a financial consultant to better manage the budget and goals and has also taken a new approach of creating income and expense benchmarks on a hundredweight basis rather than a feed cost basis. This allows Steiner to make faster adjustments to the operation and better risk management decisions for the

future. The Steiner’s 650-cow herd is milked three times a day and has a rolling herd average of 30,595 pounds of milk with 3.9% fat and 3.0% protein. Steinhurst Dairy also raises all their own forages on 700 acres - corn, alfalfa, wheat, and some rye as a cover crop. Additionally, they rent land and purchase forages with relationships they have built with fellow farmers over the years. Steinhurst Dairy has a rich family history and a deep appreciation for employees.
Thursday, Sept. 30 at 12 p.m. Donley Farms Shoshone, Idaho Sponsored by: GENEX After selling their dairy in Pennsylvania in 1975, the Tabers relocated across the country to Shoshone, Idaho, where they started dairying once again in 1990 with 250 cows. Nine years later, the Tabers of Donley Farms began expanding the herd to 900 Holstein cows. Milking twice a day in a double-14 parallel parlor, Donley Farms maintains a rolling herd average of 28,974 pounds of milk with 4.0% fat and 3.27% protein. Donley Farms relies on the GENEX HerdMonitor® Cow Monitoring System for heat detection, health monitoring, integration, and cloud-based management. Running a large herd and 3,000 acres of crops in the dry climate of Idaho comes with challenges. The Tabers focus on the efficient utilization of water through pivot packages, along with recycling animal waste for bedding and fertilizer, the use of cover crops to combat soil erosion, and other strategies to improve their environmental efforts. The Tabers also dedicate their time to community involvement. Members of the Taber family volunteer at fairs,
have served on the Valley Wide Co-op board for 27 years, have served as a board member for GENEX for several years, currently hold a delegate position for GENEX, and have held leadership positions on the Farm Bureau board, Executive Council for Land O’ Lakes, and Idaho Dairy Association. Through their successful management practices and involvement in the dairy industry, it is no surprise that Donley Farms has been awarded numerous production awards for their Holstein herd in Idaho and Farmer of the Year Award for their county.
Friday, Oct. 1 at 10 a.m. Hildebrand Farms Dairy Junction City, Kansas Sponsored by: Kansas Department of Agriculture
In 1930, Arnold and Rose Hildebrand wanted to earn more for their growing family. With the purchase of four Holstein cows, they started a path for the Hildebrand family that great grandchildren are still following today. The farm is now owned by Arnold and Rose’s great grandchildren, David and Alan Hildebrand, alongside their wives, Kathy and Mary, respectively. In 2008, taking a leap of faith, the brothers built an on-site glass bottling facility giving their children an opportunity to work on the farm. Through the last 10 years, they have grown the processing plant to service more than 120 stores throughout Kansas and offer a wide variety of dairy products. Today, the milking herd consists of 150 Holsteins that use a double-six herringbone parlor twice a day to maintain a rolling herd average of 22,950 pounds of milk with 4.04% fat

Friday, Oct. 1 at 12 p.m. Hendrickson Dairy Menahga, Minnesota Sponsored by: Quality Liquid Feeds, Inc.
In 2017, Joel and Amanda Hendrickson conducted DNA testing and discovered that 60% of their herd had the A2A2 protein. The Hendricksons made the decision to start culling out the A1 cows and began purchasing A2A2 cows. Today, the 135-cow herd consists of 100% A2A2 Holsteins and maintains a rolling herd average of 24,700 pounds of milk with 4.3% fat and 3.4% protein. In 2019, the Hendricksons started building their own creamery to process milk from their dairy. Ten Finns Creamery found a niche market in the dairy in-
dustry and now manufactures and markets non-homogenized A2A2 whole milk, 2% milk, chocolate milk and even butter throughout the Upper Midwest. The family aims to return the ability for consumers with milk sensitivities to enjoy “real” milk without discomfort. Hendrickson Dairy currently markets 10% of their milk through the creamery but are aiming to market 100% in just three years. The Hendricksons are a true representation of a “family” farm. Not only is the farm a business, but it is also a way of life for the Hendricksons with the entire family helping with feeding, milking and bedding the cows. In a day where so many small dairies are leaving the industry, the Hendricksons’ story shows the way a small farm has been able to thrive and think outside of the box to continue to dairy without having to add more cows.
Saturday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. Prairieland Dairy Belleville, Wisconsin Sponsored by: CowManager
Prairieland Dairy. This fourth-generation dairy farm milks three times a day in a double-24 parallel parlor and maintains a rolling herd average of 31,000 pounds of milk with 4.2% fat and 3.1% protein. Prairieland Dairy has achieved the Quality Award for DFA Fat and Protein for eight years running and has also received the Top 5 National Corn Growers Award. Prairieland Dairy’s reproductive management system includes utilizing Double Ovsynch on the first service and taking advantage of their CowManager program to identify and breed repeats after that service. The Fahey’s also use CowManager for health, nutrition and location information to help manage their herd more effectively and efficiently. Prairieland Dairy’s heifers are custom raised close by so the family is able to stay involved and ensure the success of their future herd. The Fahey family farms 3,300 acres of corn, alfalfa, soybeans and wheat. They work hard to focus on their environmental efforts such as minimum tillage, automatic row shutoffs, conservation plans through the county, and a nutrient management plan for manure.
From milking 200 cows in 1989 and undergoing expansion three times to now milking a herd of 1,500 cows, Jim, Mark and Chuck Fahey focus on quality at

For decades, National Dairy Shrine has been the keeper of the dairy industry’s history, paying homage to its biggest and most successful contributors and supporting its up-and-coming leaders. Since its inception in 1949, National Dairy Shrine is revamping its mission and getting a new look, which will be unveiled at World Dairy Expo. “As the dairy industry continues to evolve, we felt that Dairy Shrine needed to reflect that evolution,” Mike Opperman said. “We thought it was high time to give the brand a new look and refresh.” Opperman is the executive director of National Dairy Shrine. That new look will extend to the organization’s website, a fresh version of which will launch at Expo, as will the rebranding. While the organization will continue to honor great cows and the people around them, the new logo, Opperman said, reflects the depth of the industry from processing to cheese-making.
The rebranding comes on the heels of the organization’s longrange planning process. Leaders used the results of a membership survey last winter to guide its decisions. While the members continue to value National Dairy Shrine’s role in preserving and honoring the history of the industry, Opperman said it also identified the need to position the organization for the future. As such, the organization’s leaders are focusing on new ways to reach farmers and the public. “I’m excited to show them how we’re creating a vibrant organization moving forward,” Opperman said. Supporting youth through scholarships has always been part of the National Dairy Shrine’s identity and that will continue. Each year, National Dairy Shrine awards upward of $45,000 in scholarships to youth. The scholarship dollars come from member donors and Dairy Management Inc. “Students are obviously the future of our industry, and anything we can do to support them along their path is important to us,” Opperman said. In addition, Opperman said National Dairy Shrine leaders are looking at ways to help young people with professional development and transitions early in their professional careers.

“We want to help students get a leg up and be the future leaders of the industry,” he said. The National Dairy Shrine will continue to archive the history of the industry at its museum in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, and will continue to highlight changes, challenges, innoOpperman vations and peo- Mike Executive Director ple along with the star animals. “There are so many producers who have done such great things in our industry and organization,” he said. “I hope they realize there’s a place that’s recording all of that and holding that Janet Keller in prominence so Executive they have that in Committee Member the future.” Janet Keller is on the executive committee for National Dairy Shrine. She is also the executive director of the Professional Dairy Producers Foundation and is a dairy farmer in Muscoda, Wisconsin. For her, the rebranding is about
the organization living its mission “There have been massive changes within the dairy industry,” Keller said. “I guess we learn from history, and certainly we learn from the leaders before us. We want to continue to be a strong, thriving industry, and one of the ways to do that is to honor those who have made a difference so we provide positive role models for the next generation.” As students and young people show interest in the field, Keller said National Dairy Shrine can be an ongoing resource that grows right alongside them. Keller said the museum not only preserves and records milestones within the industry, it captures the importance of the evolution of the industry from dairy production and breeding great cattle to research and academic areas. The museum highlights everything from the importance of genetic research and cow comfort to land and water stewardship. There are many different ways to be a dairy producer in the United States, Keller said, and holding space for those methods and providing members with an opportunity to network with other farmers is important to explaining dairy possibilities to the next generation. “I think it’s a fresh way to look at the organization,” Keller said. “It sets a new pace in inspiring the future of the industry.”

The basement of dairy dreams Gietzel builds extensive memorabilia collection By Danielle Nauman danielle.n@dairystar.com
MONTICELLO, Wis. – When a young boy first picked up a few sire directories from a booth at the 1974 Dodge County Fair, he probably had no idea that would lead to a basement full of dairy industry memorabilia. As the years have passed, Dave Gietzel has continued building his own miniature National Dairy Shrine in his Monticello basement. “We still lived in town in Horicon, but like every future farm kid, I picked up stuff,” Gietzel said. “I memorized everything about every bull. With those three books, a Holstein, Jersey and Guernsey one, I was completely hooked. Sire directories were my first foray into collecting. They were something I could easily obtain.” The Gietzel family moved to a small farm surrounded by dairy farms in 1975, and Gietzel’s affinity for the dairy

companies for them through the mail,” Gietzel said. “As I got into high school, I started sending away for ones from places like France, Germany and Japan. They sent me

“I got to see Paclamar Reflection Milly and the Sesame cow and some of those cows I had read about,” Gietzel said. With each sire directory, magazine, pamphlet and letter, both Gietzel’s collection and passion grew. Despite his youth, he diligently maintained his small but growing collection. “Every time I moved, it all came with me. Con nued from GIETZEL | Page 31 my Worlds and sire directories always made it,” Gietzel said. Today, Gietzel’s basement is full of years’ worth of dairy memorabilia in various forms from breed magazines to sire directories, sale catalogs, ribbons, banners and photographs. In August, he drove to New York to pick up a complete set of Holstein herd books. Gietzel keeps an extensive electronic inventory, including scans of the covers of his catalogs. His collection includes 1,773 issues of Holstein World; 730 issues of the Canadian Holstein Journal; 209 issues of Holstein, 552 issues of Wisconsin Holstein News; 132 issues of Pennsylvania Holstein Profiles; 132 issues of New York Holstein News; 295 issues of The Brown Swiss Bulletin; 326 issues of The Red Bloodlines; 393 issues of Guernsey Breeders’ Journal and 1,362 sale catalogs. He also has a number of copies of the Illinois Holstein Herald, Ohio Holstein News and Iowa Holstein Herald that he has yet to document as well as over 700 Holstein and 300 colored breed sire directories. Gietzel likes to spend his downtime looking for treasures to add to his collection. “(Obsessive-compulsive disorder) is a terrible thing to have with this passion,” Gietzel said. “You have to have the whole set.” The majority of Gietzel’s collection is specific to the Holstein breed, although he also has some Ayrshire, Brown Swiss and Guernsey memorabilia. “I had to draw the line somewhere, but if I find something cool, I will make an exception,” Gietzel said. … “I just
love these old magazines. There is just something about them I can’t describe. I love the old photos and everything. I got interested in the Brown Swiss breed working for Voegeli Brothers Farms after I moved here, and for a while, the Guernsey stuff was really easy to find.” The internet and the rapid growth of social media have been great tools for Gietzel to continue adding to his collection. He spends a great deal of time searching the internet for pieces to add to the collection and corresponding with collectors. He has also served as a point of reference for several writers and others doing research. “Besides reliving all of this great history of the various breeds, I have met and gotten to know so many great people through this hobby,” Gietzel said. Every now and again, Gietzel finds himself lucky enough to fall into a dairy cattle memorabilia collector’s treasure chest. “A friend of mine had the auction for R. Dale Jones’ widow after he passed away,” Gietzel said. “He called me up and said he knew I liked this stuff. I went up there and got a lot of great stuff: old trophies, banners, ribbons, photos, magazines, all kinds of stuff. … I filled (a pickup) up for not a lot of money, because I was the only one there who was interested in that stuff.” In addition to his basement, Gietzel also has a storage unit to help house over flow from his collection that he has been unable to catalog. “I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t play the lottery, and I don’t own DANIELLE NAUMAN/DAIRY STAR cattle anymore,” said Gietzel with a laugh, waving his arm around the room. Some of Gietzel’s favorite pieces are displayed prominently in his library, includ“We all need a vice, and this is mine.” ing the catalog from the 1964 Romandale Sale, a highly sought-a er collec ble.

How many years have you attended World Dairy Expo and why do you attend? I attended my first World Dairy Expo in 1988 as a member of the Marshfield FFA. I began showing there in 1993 when I could still show in the junior show. I have shown every year since, except for last year. We always like to see how our cattle stack up against the best of the best.
What does it mean to you that World Dairy Expo is back in 2021? Having WDE back means things are getting a little closer to normal. I am happy Expo was able to stay in Wisconsin for selfish reasons since we are only a little over two hours away from Madison. Other dairy shows and fairs returned this year with mixed results, but most exhibitors are just happy to be back to showing.
What are three things you are looking forward to doing this year at World Dairy Expo? I am looking forward to watching my boys show in the Ayrshire and Milking Shorthorn shows. Last year, the kids were disappointed in shows being cancelled but they were most disappointed to miss out on showing at Expo. I also look forward to seeing exhibitors I only see at Madison. Phone calls and social media contact are great, but there is nothing like seeing people in person. If I had to pick a third thing, it would be seeing all the great cattle of all the breeds in the barn and the showring. What information or product do you hope to take home to improve your dairy? The biggest information I take home is what bulls are working in the breeds we own. I especially like to see offspring of new bulls and see young daughters in milking form.
What is your favorite memory from World Dairy Expo? My favorite memory comes from 2008 when our cow, Foggy-Valley Volage Marigold, was the Ayrshire Cow of the Year and represented the breed that year at Expo. She also placed fifth in a large aged cow class. All four cows ahead of her in the class were All-American in milking form at some point in time. We have the governor’s proclamation hanging in our house, and I still laugh when I go past it sometimes because it has the word Ayrshire in it four times, and it is spelled wrong every time.
What would you say to other dairy producers to encourage them to attend World Dairy Expo? I would tell other dairy producers there is something for everyone at Expo. Whether you are interested in the showring or are more interested in the commercial aspect, there is something that will be of interest to you. Both small and large farms can benefit from the variety of seminars and products showcased at Expo.

Tell us about your farm and your plans for your dairy this fall. My wife, Shauna, and I farm with our three sons, Hunter, Peyton and Tanner. My parents, Philip and Gladys, are also a part of the farm. Dad still does the majority of the field work and Mom does what she can and watches our kids. We milk about 50 to 60 cows and focus on type. Most of our herd is registered Ayrshire with a few Holsteins and Milking Shorthorns. We show at four to five shows a year. The boys have taken a real interest in dairy and in showing. They also raise rabbits, ducks, pygmy goats and a few other small animals.

Laura Schimek Pine Island, Minnesota Dodge County 550 cows How many years have you attended World Dairy Expo, and why do you attend? I went as a little kid once or twice, and then I have attended every year but one since 1992. So, I have been to Expo about 30 years. I started showing there in 1992 as a junior Holstein member until 1997. The years following, I helped other friends in their show strings. I also was there and helped prepare animals when my sister, Molly, won the show with her cow, Pine-Shelter Cheyenne. What does it mean to you that World Dairy Expo is back in 2021? I am able to see and catch up with friends. Even missing one year, it seems like things have changed, and it will be good to talk with people I have missed. All our kids have grown up so much since we have seen each other last. What are three things you are looking forward to doing this year at World Dairy Expo? I am first looking forward to signing up and watching my son, Jacob, in the showmanship contest. He loves showing. I am also looking forward to talking with friends from across the coun-

the farm, so I will be going to look at mastitis products and seminars or information about milking procedure. The SCC is going in the right direction, but we would like to improve it even more.
What information or product do you hope to take home to improve your dairy? We have been working to keep our somatic cell count lower on

Tell us about your farm and your plans for your dairy this fall. I am the sixth generation on my family’s dairy. I farm together with my dad, two uncles and my brother on our dairy, Pine Shelter Farms, which has both a parlor and tiestall milking facility. I have two kids, Reagan, 13, and Jacob, 11, who do things on the farm when they are able. I do a little of everything on the farm, but I am mainly in charge of employee scheduling, vaccinating, herd checks, giving ovsynch shots, calves and sorting cows. This fall, we are working on chopping corn silage and getting our chores and projects done in order to go to World Dairy Expo. We are continuing to try to improve SCC, and we remodeled our tiestall barn with new stalls, drinking cups and more pens.

Fiberglass freestalls offer a heightened level of comfort which can lead to an increase in milk production! New additive in our paint now prevents & protects against the growth of mold & mildew.
“We installed our posts and 5 wire fencing in spring for our cattle receiving/training pen. Post and fencing were easy and quick to install & fiberglass is long lasting. We want to keep our farm natural looking so this product works well for us and the cattle.” Morris and Debra Weyers, Bethany, MO
NEW PRODUCTS: • All Solid Rail Fencing has a 20 year UV coating to prevent slivers, Colors available • Show Fencing & Pasture fencing • Cattle Panels & Continuous Fencing • 1’’ & 1-1/4 Electric Fence Post UV Protected •13% Chrome Post for Head Locks & Feed Rail • Guard Rail and Fiberglass posts. • Lifetime warranty on our fiberglass products from rusting and rotting
“We decided to install freestalls from TJ’s Fencing after a friend recommended them. They were easy to install and the cows really like them. We only have about half of the stalls converted right now, but are eager to get the rest of our stalls converted to freestalls from TJ’s Fencing.“ - Bernard County Dairy, Richard Decker Installed in February 2020
“These gates are very simple to take apart, like calf huts, only bigger. We put 1-3 calves in a pen, which gets them accustomed to group housing. Ventilation is better for the calves having an open pen.We are very happy with our investment in the gates.” Top Deck Holsteins-Westgate, IA, Jason, Derek, Justin Decker
Jeff Kintzle, Peosta, IA FIBERGLASS POSTS & RAIL
“We have been supplying Glasfiber boxes for 10 years. Every customer is satisfied with this product and will definitely choose the glass fiber freestall again in the future. It is also a good fit for renovation projects. In addition, we also offer glass fiber fencing. The glass fiber is an excellent alternative to the iron barn equipment.” Bertha Swaving, Holland, Netherlands
“We built our new ABS Global Calf Facility in the summer of 2016. This was the first time we utilized anything except steel at one of our facilities and it was a hard sell to the staff. However, after meeting with Travis at TJ’s Fencing in Harpers Ferry, and having him bring a gate home to show the staff, we were sold. We utilize more than 200 different sizes of gates, all purchased from TJ’s Fencing and installed by Cliff’s Incorporated from Friesland, Wis. The gating is holding up very well. We intend to expand our calf facility this summer and will definitely continue utilizing TJ’s Fencing for the gating.” - Jim Meronek, Health Assurance, Production and Supply Chain Director ABS Global, Inc., DeForest, WI

Continual changes necessary for success Newalta Dairy will share driving force behind growing operation By Sarah Colburn Contributing writer
PIPESTONE, Minn. – The leadership team at Newalta Dairy LLC believes genetics to be the driving force behind the way the dairy operation is growing. As the company aims to invest in its animals, improve animal welfare and overall dairy farm efficiencies, Trevor Ekkel, a member of the family who owns Newalta Dairy, focuses on the operation’s breeding program, working to balance the herd. Two generations of the family work together to lead the production team. With the help of 40 employees who feed and milk the cows and serve as herdsmen, Newalta Dairy milks 3,300 Holstein cows in a double-40 parallel parlor and a double-12 parallel parlor three times a day near Pipestone, Minnesota. The dairy has a rolling herd average of 27,000 pounds of milk. Leaders of the dairy will give a behind-the-scenes look and share some of their successes as they have grown during a Virtual Farm Tour at noon Sept. 28 at this year’s World Dairy Expo. The farm is owned and operated by John and Berlinda Vander Wal, along with their son, Ian, and daughter, Alisha Ekkel, and her husband, Trevor. The team discusses long-term goals and future returns together, making capital spending decisions as a team. Most of those discussions happen throughout the work day in the office. “It’s always growth, milk more cows or buy more land,” Trevor Ekkel said. The leadership team recently purchased another dairy and is considering buying more land and equipment, and purchasing a manure digester. “It’s a matter of all being in favor of something,” Ekkel said. Each member of the leadership team heads his or her own area on the farm. John is in charge of manTurn to NEWALTA | Page 2

aging the fresh cows as well as any sick cows. Ekkel leads reproduction, vet checks and the dry cow side of things as well as computer work. Ian maintains and manages equipment, and oversees the crop side of the farm. Newalta Dairy farms 1,200 acres of corn, alfalfa, rye, sorghum and grass, and uses cover crops to help with soil erosion. In addition, Alisha works in the office and does the books, and her sister, Bernice Van Hulzen, helps in the office a few days a week. Berlinda helps in the field and with computer work, and also watches over the grandchildren. Though all of the leaders have their area of expertise, Ekkel said they all work together on big projects.
“Wherever work needs to be done, we take care of it,” he said. Though the farm is generational and the leadership team certainly thinks about the next generation, they have not planned too hard around the transition yet – the oldest grandchild is 5. But, Ekkel said they do think about the next generation as they make large financial decisions, knowing they want the farm to be an option for the grandchildren if they are interested. The dairy invests in the genetics of its animals and is fully registered. Cows are milked in a double-40 milking parlor at Newalta Dairy LLC near Pipestone, Minnesota.
“I’m trying to get the best of all the worlds but not chase a certain number,” he said. The farm pays out roughly $50,000 a year to keep its cattle registered, an expense that Ekkel said is non-negotiable. At the dairy, they register and classify cattle, and keep data from bulls. They also DHIA test and track what their cows are doing day-to-day, entering everything electronically to create the most up-to-date records possible. “I try not to sacrifice one thing,” Ekkel said. Care of the animals is another thing the farm does not sacrifice. The cows are housed in two tunnel-ventilated barns and two natural-ventilated barns. They built their last barn in 2020. Ekkel said that barn is their best yet, a simple steel, tunnel-ventilated barn with a low roof line. “We can move lots of air through it,” he said. Ekkel said cooling of the animals is important for the comfort of the cows and to avoid a reduction in milk supply. The family also switched over to sand bedding around three years ago to provide more traction for the animals. “It’s a matter of cow comfort,” Ekkel said. “We focus heavily on cow cooling. We put a lot of water on top of them, a lot of fans running, those basic things.” The calves are no longer cared for on-site despite the addition of a new calf barn a few years ago. Through the years, Ekkel said they struggled with keeping calves healthy. He found a business in southwest Kansas to raise the animals for them and said it is a much drier climate without so much temperature fluctuation. The large-scale heifer calf ranch, he said, has not only cost-saving efficiencies, they do not lose as many animals. The dairy now uses the calf barn for bull calves and storage. They have also converted some of the space into pens that are leased to local 4-H members. Overall, the changes made have helped the family be more efficient for their dairy as they continue looking towards the future.

How many years have you attended World Dairy Expo, and why do you attend? I have been attending World Dairy Expo for over 25 years. At first, I was helping others with their show cattle, and now, we exhibit our own. What does it mean to you that World Dairy Expo is back in 2021? It means a lot to us as a family and for our farm. We don’t get to see a lot of our dairy friends very often, and Expo give us 10 days with them. Also, it provides an opportunity for us to show the world our cattle and market their genetics. What are three things you are looking forward to doing this year at World Dairy Expo? Reconnecting with friends we haven’t seen in person for a long time. Checking out the trade show to see if there’s anything we can incorporate into our dairy. Watching our oldest two children show their heifers and cows on the colored shavings. What information or product do you hope to take home to improve your dairy? We are always looking to improve cow comfort. We would like to see what is new in this area. Also, I love seeing what bulls other herds are using and having success with for young cows.

What is your favorite memory from World Dairy Expo? In 2019, our son, Curtis, showed his first animals at World Dairy Expo. His junior 2-year-old, Kara-Kesh-RK Our Gem-Red-ET, placed third in the open show and was first bred and owned. She was also first junior in her class. She ended up being reserve intermediate champion and honorable mention grand champion of the Red and White junior show. It was an amazing experience for him and the rest of our family. Certainly a day we will never forget. What would you say to other dairy producers to encourage them to attend World Dairy Expo? World Dairy Expo truly is an awesome place to be. It doesn’t matter if you milk 10 cows or 1,000, or if you are strictly a commercial dairyman or a registered breeder focusing on show ring type. World Dairy Expo has something to offer every single type of dairy person out there.

Tell us about your farm and your plans for your dairy this fall. Our herd is all Red and White or red carrier. We breed for the show ring and for cows that will stand the test of time. We focus on cow comfort and milk quality over high production. This fall, we are adding more recipients to our youngstock herd for implanting embryos from some of our best cows. And, we will continue to increase this number over the coming year.

Con nued from HANSON/SWENSON | Page 6 What does it mean to you that World Dairy Expo is back in 2021? We are fortunate to have WDE back as it is the best show in the country and the closest national show that hosts all breeds. What are three things you are looking forward to doing this year at World Dairy Expo? Seeing the best cattle in the world. No other place brings together this many high-quality animals in one location. WDE is the only time we get to see some of our closest friends. We work yearround to breed and raise cattle to perform in the barn but also in the show ring. We are always excited to see how that pays off at WDE. What is your favorite memory from World Dairy Expo? In 2019, we won the Brown Swiss component merit class with C & A Sweet Wonderment Ruth. Walking in the Brown Swiss Parade of Champions was something I will never forget. In 2015, we got
engaged at WDE, the same place we first met as attendees of the 4-H Dairy Conference. What would you say to other dairy producers to encourage them to attend World Dairy Expo? If there is anything you want to know or see within the dairy industry, WDE likely has it. Tell us about your farm and your plans for your dairy this fall. We milk approximately 240 cows through four Lely A4 robots. We have 240 registered Holsteins, 20 registered Brown Swiss and five registered Ayrshires located at our farm in Nicollet. We have 100 registered Ayrshires in Goodridge, Minnesota. We are renovating our freestall barn from 50% mattresses to 100% deep-bedded sand. This includes the addition of stalls and manure handling/storage and some updates to the tunnel ventilation system.

Why do you attend World Dairy Expo? “We’re most looking forward to exhibiting our Guernseys this year on the colored shavings in Madison.” Megan and Tim Schrupp Eden Valley, Minnesota Meeker County 900 cows How many years have you attended World Dairy Expo, and why do you attend? We’ve attended World Dairy Expo to exhibit our Guernseys in the dairy show every year since 2013. What does it mean to you that World Dairy Expo is back in 2021? We’re especially looking forward to WDE this year. Over the years, we’ve joined this community of people who gather annually in Madison, and it’s been a few years now since we have seen many of our Expo friends. We also think the return of WDE represents a sense of normalcy, and we’re very much ready for things to get back to normal.
Shield Her From The Cold.
What are three things you are looking forward to doing this year at World Dairy Expo? We’re most looking forward to exhibiting our Guernseys this year on the colored shavings in Madison. Secondly, spending time all week in the barns, visiting with other exhibitors and friends while watching the other breed shows. What information or product do you hope to take home to improve your dairy? As dairy farmers and a veterinarian, we look forward to visiting one on one with other dairy farmers as well as veterinarians in regards to new ideas they have implemented, things they’re struggling with and inquiring on any potential solutions to challenges we’re facing on our own dairy. We also like the opportunity that WDE provides in gathering industry experts all in one town and allowing us to also have conversations with these experts. In the recent past, it seems that WDE is adding more and more educational seminars that are also offering new information that we can take back to our dairy. What is your favorite memory from World Dairy Expo? Our favorite memory was in 2015 when we took first place with our spring yearling Guernsey heifer, Empire LoneStar Sansa Stark, in the Guernsey show. What would you say to other dairy producers to encourage them to attend World Dairy Expo? We would encourage others to visit WDE as those who don’t attend would most likely be surprised in the size and scope of Expo. There’s not only a large trade show and dairy show but so many opportunities to learn and gather new information. We’ve met so many other dairy farmers and have been able to follow up with them outside of Expo when we’re pursuing new projects or facing challenges. Tell us about your farm and your plans for your dairy this fall. The past year has been extremely busy on our family dairy farm, and we are most looking forward to a successful and safe harvest season. We hope to spend more time enjoying the fall weather after this summer’s heat.

Straight talk with a bit of humor
Mason will give business a fresh look with WDE seminar By Sarah Colburn Contributing writer
Nationally-known agricultural commentator Damian Mason is presenting at this year’s World Dairy Expo. Mason injects humor into his discussions about big picture things that are impacting the dairy and agriculture industry. “Anybody can come in and do this rah-rah thing and be sugary sappy to your audience and tell them what a good industry they are,” Mason said. “The
challenge is delivering something of value to them they can apply to their business and makes them think, with truth, because sometimes truth isn’t nice, it’s just truth. But (I deliver it) with enough dose of feel-good that they’re glad they came.” Mason said he will likely talk about everything from methane digesters to cover crops to sequestering carbon. He will also talk about what he said are the realities of a dairy industry that is under fire by activists. Mason said fixing the opinion surrounding the dairy industry needs to be about more than changing the messaging. During his talk, Mason will work to connect the dots for farmers, taking big picture issues and explaining how they will impact individual farms. For example, Mason said in the future, dairies may need to be located where the people are to

avoid shipping costs and the environmental challenges that come along with that. Mason sees what he refers to as an impending face-off between what the consumer wants and what activist groups push upon them. Mason said, the question is, “Will activism cloud out the carbon sequestering and good we’re doing in modern dairy production?” On the positive side, Mason said dairy has made it through a year-and-a-half of a challenging, disrupted economy, and he is seeing opportunities for growth in niche markets. “When you see what’s direct to consumer and (what) small and specialized grocery stores (are doing), there’s more opportunity than there’s ever been,” Mason said. There is also potential for growth in terms of onfarm processing driven by an interest from the consumer base. Mason, who grew up on a dairy farm and rents land to a dairyman today, said the profits in the niche categories are reason to be optimistic. “When I was a kid, there was no kefir and no Greek yogurt,” Mason said. Overall, Mason’s talk will be informative and thought-provoking. He wants to broaden minds and talk about topics like why the Keystone XL pipeline should matter to farmers and what it could mean for dairy producers. “We’re going to keep it interesting; it won’t be your usual farm fodder,” Mason said. “If they come

A combination of his background in agriculture meshed with advice to be compelling, relevant and entertaining, which led to his focus. “Humans like an entertainment factor to go along with their information,” Mason said. “They are super serious issues, and there’s a lot of good stuff in dairy we need to highlight.” Mason said agriculture is an industry he knows and appreciates. “I like it when people say, ‘I haven’t thought about this subject from this perspective,’” Mason said. Overall, Mason said the goal is to enlighten audiences and bring them fresh information. “Everything I do, I do with a bit of humor but straight talk about what’s happening,” Mason said.

JUNCTION CITY, Kan. – Thousands upon thousands of people flock to Hildebrand Farms Dairy for its annual Harvest Festival. Now, the farm is opening its doors with a Virtual Farm Tour at 10 a.m. Oct. 1. at World Dairy Expo. The dairy opens its doors to the public for tours of the farm, milking demonstrations, hay rides, a hay bale play area, a corn pit, face painting, a bouncy house, a kids craft area and ice cream. The festival is one of the many ways the dairy leadership welcomes the public to the farm near Junction City, Kansas. Hildebrand Farms Dairy also hosts Moo-vie Night and cooking classes with a professional chef aptly called Cows, Cooks and Conversation. Though COVID-19-restrictions have been a challenge, operations manager Melissa Hildebrand-Reed said the events have been fruitful for the company. “As soon as we put the bottling facility in, we knew transparency was everything,” Hildebrand-Reed said. “We knew we wanted to connect with our customer and give them a chance to learn where their milk comes from.” The company began bottling its own milk in 2008 – opting to build an on-site glass bottling facility as a way to grow the family business. The dairy farm dates
back to 1930 and was started by Arnold and Rose Hildebrand who wanted to earn more money for their growing family. Today, their great-grandchildren continue that tradition. Now, the processing plant services more than 120 stores throughout Kansas and offers a variety of dairy products derived from the 150-Holstein milking herd. The glass bottling was something that came naturally for Hildebrand-Reed who grew up drinking her milk out of a glass pickle jar – which she said kept the milk fresher and better insulated. The company, at the time, was receiving awards from Blue Bunny in Iowa for the quality of the milk they were producing, and at the same time, they were selling through the bulk tank and had a number of customers coming to buy raw milk. “We started seeing demand, and we saw there was an opportunity,” Hildebrand-Reed said. “Once you have confidence in what you’re doing, there’s always that itch to push yourselves and push the limits.” The farm consists of 2,000 acres. The Holsteins are milked in a double-6 herringbone parlor twice a day to maintain a rolling herd average of 22,950 pounds of milk. The event marketing, Hildebrand-Reed said, is just a portion of the marketing they do for the farm, but it is one that leaves a lasting impact. With the festival, depending on the marketing for the year, as many as 3,000 to 5,000 customers will come through the farm. “By providing our customers an experience on the farm, it gives them a little bit more opportunity to relate to our lifestyle and to relate to the world we’ve

Con nued from HILDEBRANDS | Page 16 created around us that we love so much but often keep to ourselves,” she said. For Hildebrand-Reed, experiencing the beauty of a sunset behind a herd of grazing cows is something common, but it is an experience that is powerful to share with customers as they do yoga on the farm. Though Hildebrand-Reed said she knows people who talk about their concern with anti-farm movements or lack of trust of the dairy industry, that is simply not something she has experienced through her business. “Consumers are typically a generation removed from the farm, and they really have a feeling of nostalgia,” Hildebrand-Reed said. “They want to share that with their kids. We try to provide some of that connection and education and messaging. I’m always surprised by how much people want to be on the farm. They want to know what we’re doing, and they want to experience it.” For Hildebrand-Reed, World Dairy Expo is an opportunity to share with fellow farmers about the logistics of on-site
events, in-store samplings, social media and how their farm got to where it is today. “It’s easy to build a plant,” she said. “It’s not easy to produce that milk and sell that milk and get it to the right person at the right place. It’s not always a grocery store. There’s a lot of opportunity to market your product.” Though, fluid milk is indeed the company’s core product. They offer some fun flavors including a root beer milk that gives consumers the opportunity to try something new. For Expo, Hildebrand-Reed will also discuss the importance of diversification and marketing direct to consumers, marketing to retail through the grocery stores and wholesale through distributors. She hopes her experience in the industry will truly help others. “Those first few years, I didn’t know anything,” Hildebrand-Reed said. “It was mistake after mistake. What I would have loved was that opportunity to connect with someone or have a mentor to point me in the right direction.”

Friday, Oct. 1 at 1:30 p.m. Make Longevity Her Legacy Speaker: Chuck Sattler, Vice President of Genetic Programs, Select Sires, Inc., and Jeff Ziegler, Vice President of Dairy Cattle Breeding, Select Sires, Inc. Presenting Company: Select Sires Inc. Dairy farmers are using genetic audits to right-size their heifer inventories and diversify revenue, causing fewer replacement heifers, which demands lower herd turnover rates. With this shift, herds will have more older cows, which increases the importance of boosting their resistance to disease as the frequency of health events increases as cows get older. In April, Select Sires introduced a new selection index, Herd Health Profit Dollars (HHP$) as well as a Mastitis ResistantPRO designation. These tools make use of the new evaluations from CDCB to make selecting for healthy, longer-living cows more effective for commercial producers. Chuck Sattler is Vice President of Genetic Programs at Select Sires. He has been with Select Sires for 20 years and served as the Genetic Programs Administrator for the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) for 12 years prior to joining Select Sires. Sattler grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin where his family had a registered Guernsey herd and received a B.S in Dairy Science and a M.S. in Dairy Cattle Breeding from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Jeff Ziegler is Vice President of Dairy Cattle Breeding for Select Sires.

$ Improving Your Bottom Line $
As a dairyman, are you looking to improve the way your fresh cows transition, take off, peak and breed back? Looking to improve rumen health, rumen function, overall health, digestion, feed efficiency, and YOUR BOTTOM LINE??? If so, then…
RECALIBRATE WITH RECAL
The RECAL line of probioƟcs is NOT just another probioƟc on the market. RECAL is a probioƟc heavily weighted towards beƩer digesƟon and uƟlizaƟon, primarily FIBER DIGESTION. There are a lot of nutrients in your forages that can be uƟlized by improving digesƟon. RECAL is also a probioƟc that produces more B-vitamins in the rumen of that cow, mainly vitamin B12. B-vitamins are well known to aide in sƟmulaƟng appeƟte, stress, immune system, reproducƟon and also very important in rumen digesƟon. Not all probioƟcs are the same. There are hundreds of various strains and combinaƟons.
TRIPLEͳT HOLSTEINS & JERSEYS “In the spring of 2013, I met up with Jamie Troxel of RECAL Microbials. I had been hearing very good things from other dairymen about RECAL PLUS and I knew Dr. G.W. Snider was involved with the research, so I knew there must be something to this product. Jamie came out to the farm and simply told me about the RECAL PLUS and showed me some of the research that he and Doc had been working on together. He never once tried selling me anything. We talked about the RECAL PLUS and he told me what he does to prove the product. Then he told me he would Nathan Thomas • Triple-T Holsteins North Lewisburg, Ohio give me a 30-day supply and if I didn’t see any diīerence, I didn’t have to pay anything for it. Normally Jamie likes to monitor dry maƩer intakes, milk producƟon, % BF, % Pro, MUN’s, Eī., feed costs, income, & income over feed cost and perform manure screenings. Well since we feed grain and hay, we could not do that, so we could only do manure screenings. I was already feeding a probioƟc, but from what I had heard from Jamie, other dairymen and the oīer he gave me, I couldn’t pass it up. So, Jamie & I collected some manure samples, and screened them. I quit feeding the probioƟc I was feeding and he got me started feeding the RECAL PLUS and told me what to watch for and said he would be back in two weeks to collect manure from the same cows and screen that. I called him in about ten days and said don’t waste your Ɵme coming down, I see the diīerence already and that I am I going to conƟnue with it. I was seeing a lot less undigested feed in the manure. I then started on the RECAL PLUS SS because Doc and other dairymen had been seeing signs of beƩer blood circulaƟon. Some other things I have really noƟced and like about the RECAL PLUS SS is how well my cows stay on feed when going to shows, and stress Ɵmes, they don’t go oī feed and just keep eaƟng and handle the stress well. I have also noƟced that my fresh cows get oī to a beƩer start and that when cows come into heat, they are stronger heats, and the reproducƟon is beƩer. From one dairyman to another, I highly recommend the RECAL PLUS, and RECAL BOLUSES whether you just have show caƩle or a commercial dairy. This product really does work and I really like the way and eīort Jamie puts into proving the product. We have been proudly using RECAL PLUS and RECAL BOLUSES on all of our cows now since 2013.”
Go by what the cows say, they don’t lie!!! For less than $0.08/cow/day, you will see a diīerence

Friday, Oct. 1 at 2:30 p.m. Sand Bedding and Anaerobic Digestion Speaker: Andrew Wedel, P.E., Director of International Business - Agriculture Presenting Company: McLanahan Corporation Sand is here to stay as dairy cow bedding in freestalls. Sand keeps cows cleaner, drier and more comfortable than other bedding materials. With increasing interest in anaerobic digestion in the dairy industry, there is a myth that manure bedding is the only option for these systems. See the research behind sand-manure separation increasing anaerobic digestion utilization, as it gives dairies the ability to recycle bedding sand and produce an effluent suitable to anaerobic digestion. Andrew Wedel is the Director of International Business Development for Agriculture and the Product Manager for Agricultural Systems at McLanahan Corporation in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania USA. In these roles he is responsible for dealer development and successful project execution for dairy
manure projects throughout the world on dairies small and large. Since 1992, Andrew has been instrumental in developing handling, conveyance, and separation methods for handling sand-laden dairy manure.
