LIMINGTON, Maine – Admiring great dairy cows has been a longtime passion for Scott Hussey of Limington.
“I started out by making our six best cows,”
Hussey brings wooden bovine beauties to life
“I have always liked making things out of wood,” Hussey said. “When I was young, I made my stepfather’s truck and gooseneck cattle trailer.”
“I have received several requests for particular cows, so that number seems to be climbing,” Hussey said. “I am working on several that are to be
He enjoys working with them in the esh and then paying homage to them through three-dimensional wooden sculptures.
As an adult, Hussey has married those two interests, carving favorite cows from a block of wood.Hussey and his wife, Angela, own a herd of 15 registered Holsteins and care for them on their hobby farm in Limington. These cows that Hussey cares for on a daily basis were the rst models for his carvings.“About15 years ago, my wife wanted me to make her favorite cow, Brigeen Dundee R A Marcy, about the size of a true-type model,” Hussey said. “(It) took me a couple of months to nish, but to this day, she is the best cow I have made. Marcy’s personality was captured perfectly about her head. Then, I just kept making our own cows.”

Herschleb said. “It enhances the space and the experience for Katieexhibitors.”Schmitt,WDE’s communications manager, said this year’s show will bring back all the components event-goers are used to seeing with some slight modications. The education pieces will look a little different this year; each day now has a similar structure. For the most part, the Tanbark Talks will begin at 9 a.m., there will be a virtual farm tour at 10 a.m. and an expo seminar at noon. At 2 p.m. each day will be Expo en Español seminar. Then, built around that schedule will be knowledge nook sessions, dairy forage seminars, FFA seminars and industry-hosted events.

“We’re eager to see what these changes bring,” Herschleb said. “A lot of thought and careful consideration went into these schedule adjustments.”
“To me, WDE is like a reunion, from seeing people all over the world that you only see once or twice, if you’re lucky, a year,” Herschleb said. “There’s this special electricity that comes over the city when WDE comes to town.”
This year’s Tanbark Talk schedule includes presentations by Michelle McBride, founder of GoodSport Nutrition, Olympian Elle St. Pierre and a live taping of the U.S. Farm “ThoseReport.events are going to be a really great thing for our attendees to experience,” Schmitt said. “Anything that happens in the Tanbark is at the top of the must-see list for Theme.”easiest way for attendees to keep up with this year’s schedule is to download the mobile event app. That will allow people to have a schedule and map with them at all times.

This year’s World Dairy Expo launches with a focus on youth events then heads right into showmanship on the colored shavings and includes the latest in technology and “Witheducation.so many youth-focused activities, it is a really special way to hit the ground running for the future of the dairy industry,” said Laura Herschleb, WDE general manager.
She said event goers can expect a return to WDE standards from preCOVID-19 precautions.

The event provides a platform to spread the word about those evolutions. This year, the trade show will once again be used as a vehicle for product and brand launches. Additionally, the show ring for the dairy cattle show has grown; the space has been extended by more than 2,000 square feet with the removal of the west rail.

Because of cancellation of the show in 2020, the leadership team was able to take time to make the shift in the schedule, something Herschleb said they have talked about for years. The change, she said, maintains the focus on dairy cattle exhibitors and offers vendors a shorter window to be on site, something they have requested to be more in line with the expectation of other trade shows.
“The education and networking pieces we’ve worked on building the last few years will be in full force,” Schmitt said. “It’s going to be the Expo we’re all ready to see again.”
“The dairy industry companies and farmers are constantly evolving,” she said.

Turning an 8- by 12-inch block of wood into a life-like model of a dairy cow takes time mixed with talent. Hussey estimates he spends somewhere between 70 to 85 hours on each carving.
“Getting the udder depth correct and getting all the veins just right takes a bit of time,” Hussey said. “All the little details take a lot of time and patience but are very important to get correct. There are a lot of details to t on that small block of wood.”

“I just look through my les and pick out something that I think is interesting for that day,” Urban said. “Lately, I’ve been featuring a lot of cow photos from collections I have obtained. I’ll pick out an old photo of some cow that catches my eye and do a little research on her.”
Urban grew up on his family’s dairy farm in Milladore, Wisconsin and managed Legendairy Holsteins. Urban milked about 40 Holsteins and, at one point, added 10 Brown Swiss to his herd.
For the past 10 years, Urban has operated the Legendairy Holsteins and Swiss Facebook page, where he makes regular posts about pieces of registered dairy cattle history. The page has more than 7,800 followers.
Urban enjoys sharing the history of registered Holsteins. He said he typically learns something new along the way.“There are a lot of people that are really passionate about the pedigrees
“My parents took me to what was then called the World Food Expo,” Urban said. “It was very different back in those days. They used to have tractor pulls and things like that to draw in crowds.”
Doug Urban, of Marsheld, Wisconsin, poses with two of his favorite pieces of registered Holstein memorabilia – a pain ng of champions owned by Henry “Sonny” Bartel of Hi-Path Farms in Ellsworth, Wisconsin, and a catalog from the 1958 Rosafe dispersal. Urban has missed one World Dairy Expo.

With the old stalls, a lot of heifers were laying in the alleyways but with the Torenna stalls that problem has greatly decreased. We like the Torenna’s as they are flexible which allows the stalls to be narrower and larger cows can easily move the stalls to the width they need.”
While he appreciates many classes of dairy cattle memorabilia, Urban said his favorites to collect are historic sale catalogs.
“Russel Ridge Sr., from down in Dodge County, was giving away a bunch of old copies of the Wisconsin Holstein News, Holstein World and a bunch of old sale catalogs,” Urban said. “I drove down to his place and loaded down my car; the shocks were just about down to the ground.”
MARSHFIELD, Wis. – For Doug Urban, the rst week in October rivals the excitement most people feel during the December holidays. That is because World Dairy Expo falls on those days of the calendar, and Urban has only missed one Expo since“I1967.missed the 2005 WDE,” Urban said. “The dates were different; it was always the rst Saturday in October, and that year, it was the second Saturday. We had plans to travel to California before I realized the difference.”Urban attended the inaugural event before Expo donned its name.

me,” Urban said. “They are so amazing, and I just really like seeing them. I like meeting up with friends, and I always walk through the whole trade show, collecting the sire directories and taking the time to renew magazine subscriptions for my collection.”
“My son wanted a brown calf, so I bought him a Brown Swiss calf with a good pedigree,” Urban said. “When she was ready to calve, we bought three Brown Swiss springers from a breeder in Minnesota. We got three heifer calves from those rst four Brown Swiss heifers when they calved.”Urban said he is looking forward to taking his seat in the coliseum for the 55th edition of Expo.

In January of 2021 I was seeing something that I didn’t like in my cows. The cows were performing well, 80# of milk 4.20% BF 3.20% Pro but I was seeing a fair amount of corn in the manure. My HMC was drier than I like it and a bit too coarse. I had been watching the adver sements from RECAL Microbials for some me and thought I’d call them. So, I called and talked to Jamie and he didn’t push anything, he just simply told me about their products and o ered me a thirty-day free trial. But Jamie said he wanted to come to my farm and take a look at my diet, not that he wanted to change my diet, just so he knew what kind of diet we are working with, take a look at my forages, cows and manure. So, I said when can you come.
So, we made the dry ma er adjustments and waited two weeks to start to RECAL PLUS SS. In those two weeks I gained two pounds of milk, BF dipped a li le and I was mixing for the correct number of cows and all we did was adjust the dry ma ers on the forages, but the manure didn’t change. Then we started on the RECAL PLUS SS. Within three days I was seeing a di erence in the manure, it was more consistent and creamier with less undigested ber and corn. Within seven days I saw a lot less corn and ber. Intakes stayed the same but milk was up three pounds while BF & PRO stayed the same but MUNS went to 13 and I pulled some protein out. I was seeing stronger heats too. Milk con nued to climb as me went on and was able to hold 90#-92# with 4.00% BF and 3.00%-3.20% PRO most of 2021. I had been feeding a toxin binder and yeast prior to feeding the RECAL but pulled them out a er seeing the results of the RECAL PLUS SS. I also started feeding the RECAL PLUS to my dry cows and I must say that the cows do transi on be er at freshening. They take o be er, less issues, milk be er, peak higher, hold their peak longer and breed back be er. I also started feeding the RECAL CALF POWDER to my calves and I just don’t get sick calves anymore and the calves are so much livelier. I told Jamie I wish I would have started feeding the RECAL ten years sooner.
Jamie will tell you that not every farm is the same and doesn’t see the same results. But with the deal he o ers what do you have to lose??? I for one am glad I called Jamie to nd out more about the RECAL. My family and I milk about 120 cows near Sheridan, MI.
Ruedinger said he is fortunate to have beneted from the wisdom of mentors from many aspects of the dairy industry and business community.
“Coming home to the farm was the only full-time job I ever had,” he said. “It is different with my daughter and son-in-law; they both have had great jobs previously in non-agriculture related businesses. Their approach and understanding are very different. … There is more to learn and less time to learn
The RECAL line of probio cs is NOT just another probio c on the market. RECAL is a probio c heavily weighted towards be er diges on and u liza on, primarily FIBER DIGESTION. There are a lot of nutrients in your forages that can be u lized by improving diges on.
Go by what the cows say, they don’t lie!!! For less than $0.08/cow/day, you will see a di erence
As a dairyman, are you looking to improve the way your fresh cows transition, take off, peak and breed back? Looking to improve rumen health, rumen function, overall health, digestion, feed efficiency, and YOUR BOTTOM LINE??? If so, then…

understanding and a willingness to give up some control are the key to making the transition culminate successfully, Ruedinger said.

RECAL is also a probio c that produces more B-vitamins in the rumen of that cow, mainly vitamin B12. B-vitamins are well known to aide in s mula ng appe te, stress, immune system, reproduc on and also very important in rumen diges on.
A few days later Jamie came to the farm. He did a very thorough evaluaon. He no ced that I was mixing feed for more cows than I was milking. He checked the dry ma ers on my forages and no ced that they were o a fair amount and corrected them for me. We were walking the cows and Jamie was poin ng things out in the manure. He looks at the manure very close. He no ced that there was some inconsistency from pile to pile, a fair amount of undigested ber and corn. Jamie then went on to tell me about the RECAL and the di erence between the three di erent products and how the free thirty-day trial works. At that point I decided I wanted to try the RECAL PLUS SS, what did I have to lose with the thirty-day free trial???? But Jamie told me that he wouldn’t start me on the RECAL at that me because of my dry ma ers being o . What we needed to do was give the cows a week or two and see how they adjusted to the change in dry ma er and then start the RECAL. Never do two things at once.

“My rst mentors were my parents,” Ruedinger said. “Growing up on the farm, I always worked with my father; he was a great mentor and allowed me to grow the business. He was also heavily involved in the cooperative system. … He showed me that you can be successful in developing a family dairy and grain farm while giving back to agriculture through cooperative involvement. Because of that example, it was natural that I became involved in the cooperativeWatchingsystem.”leaders of Genex inspired Ruedinger to hone his own leadership skills.“Tom Lyon and Doug Wilson have been instrumental in the development of my leadership skills, and I have taken these skills back to the farm as we have developed over the past 25 years,” Ruedinger said. “Having the ability to see both sides, to work through consensus building and see the value in fellow board members and employees has been paramount. Developing personal relationships and trust in people will always gain respect for you in the industry.”Modeling his approach to growing his business after what he witnessed among his mentors, Ruedinger focused on surrounding himself with a team of consultants and to rely on the expertise and knowledge of those people.

“You need to build long-term relationships with those consultants; they need to know the business well enough to offer relevant advice,” Ruedinger said. “You need to be able to count on them to be consistent, reliable, open-minded and to know they have

Ruedinger said the family is in the nal stages of transitioning the business to Jamie and David, a process that has taken six years.
“You need to be open-minded and allow yourself to be taught by the next generation,” Ruedinger said. “They have a different approach to life and business thinking. They most likely would not be in agriculture if they had to do what we did.”

“It takes time to develop a transition plan and make all those involved comfortable with the decisions,” Ruedinger said. “Karen and I worked through the transition with my parents, so I have now been on both sides of family businessRuedingertransition.”said the rst transition of entering the family business was the easiest, given the team management approach he and his father had been using to operate the farm together for years.

“A poor routine causes milk ow to start and stop, creating two peaks,” Virkler said. “During the period when milk ow slows is when bad things happen. What we want is milk owing when that unit goes on the cow until it comes
“I want to put on the table some of the newer research out there,” Virkler said. “I want to look at this topic from a different angle.”
An improper routine creates bimodal letdown where milk ejection is delayed as udder stimulation time was insufcient before attaching the milking units. Milk is rst dispensed into the claw of the unit but then production slows as oxytocin is released later before milk ow returns to normal.

ate milking routine varies from farm to farm, and it can be particularly challenging as the industry’s best practices have leaned toward parlor efciencies or milking correctly but rarely in concert with each other.
Dr. Paul Virkler will lead a discussion on milking routines and address what farm data is showing at dairy’s global meeting place.
The talk will encompass the facets of a milking routine, specically moving cows through parlors quickly and milking correctly. The data that suggests the potential pitfalls and advantages of emphasizing efciency over correctness.“What is the right balance between parlor efciencies and good milking technique?” Virkler said. “If we milk too fast, that could equate to a poor milking routine and that’s not right for the cow. And, what are the potential gains for doing a correct milking routine?”
While Virkler will be delivering information specically from his farms, he is condent it can be applied in nearly every“Withbarn.this talk and this work, it’s evident of what’s good for cows regardless of what size dairy those cows are standing on,” Virkler said. “Milking quickly, gently and completely is the ultimate.”Virkler’s research leans on previously conrmed studies by Michigan State University that prove if the milking routine is incorrect, there are pounds of milk left behind and money lost.
“At World Dairy Expo, we’re talking to the leaders of the dairy industry, both producers and industry inuencers,” Virkler said. “It’s my goal to help them, and the industry as a whole, relook at some of the data and have a discussion that maybe we’ve compromised too much of the milking routine and it might be good for us to start moving back to what is best for milk letdown.”Virkler is a senior extension associate for Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is a member of the Quality Milk Production Services Unit. He will kick off World Dairy Expo’s Expo Seminars with the presenta-
tion, “Milking quickly, gently and completely: Can we consistently achieve all three?” The presentation will be held Oct. 4 in the Mendota 1 meeting room of the Exhibition Hall at World Dairy Expo in Madison.
“Milk letdown is still important; that has not changed,” Virkler said. “We need to make sure that when we’re thinking about milking routines and performance, that we’re looking at this from the perspective of the cow. I hope every farmer is putting as much weight as their individual farm system allows on the cows and doing what’s best for the cow in that environment.”
MADISON, Wis. - Dairy farmers have long known the importance of a consistent milking routine not only to maximize milk production potential, but also to promote cow health. Yet, the notion of creating a routine that is done quickly, gently and completely may be easier said than done.
Virkler’s work with farms in New York and datasets that can be interpreted across the industry may help better understand industry best practices and offer opportunity for improvement so time in the parlor is maximized while milk quality is not compromised.“On farms, there is a lot leaning on getting cows through the parlor,” Virkler said. “This talk is aimed at convincing the stakeholders ¬– dairy farmers and industry inuencers – why we should put in place a good milking routine.”
The Cornell Extension veterinarian and his team focus their research on the risk of mastitis and teat damage during milking.“Cow behavior is there, as well, and that leads to cows kicking off units among other things that could go wrong,” Virkler said. “We’re in an environment where there are potential contaminants and it’s a cycle.”
Virkler to review protocols during expo seminar Oct. 4
By Jennifer Coyne jenn@dairystar.com
The topic of Virkler’s presentation may be nothing new, but he is hopeful the conversation may be eye-opening in improving a cow’s time in the parlor, both from a production and cow-health perspective, while not diminishing the importance of making a cow’s time in the parlor as efcient as possible.
The expo seminar will touch on those aspects of a milking routine, highlighting preventative measures to reduce mastitis, as well as discuss labor and the importance of proper training in the milking parlor.

What are three things you are looking forward to doing this year at World Dairy Expo? I am looking forward to seeing and visiting with friends, seeing the cows and seeing those cows compete on show day.
What is one thing you implemented on your farm from World Dairy Expo? Better management and more effort. Especially since exhibiting, I have learned how much work it takes to get animals ready for that stage. Each year we hope to bring out animals better than we brought the year before and a lot of that comes to management. Getting that animal to the show ring isn’t an overnight task; it takes months of preparation of putting her on the right diet, exercise regimen, perfecting her hair and skin, milking and lling her udder perfectly in hopes she peaks at her best that day as she hits the show ring.

“...the show is a way for us to see which bulls we want to use next.”
Tell us about your farm and your plans for this fall. My husband and I own a small farm with 30 acres and some acres rented. The majority of my milk cows live on my parent’s farm in Wisconsin. I help them as much as possible. They are nearing retirement. The major game plan for fall is to pull the rest of the cows out. Those cows will either be sold, re-homed at another dairy or will live at my farm.

What is your favorite memory from World Dairy Expo? I had the privilege to work many great show strings before I began to exhibit my own cattle in 2016, so I have many wonderful memories of championships and premier exhibitor banners with those strings. However, my favorite came in 2019 when my own homebred and exhibited heifer was eighth winter yearling in the Holstein show. She was the rst one for us to medal.

If you like to show but just aren’t ready to exhibit, it is a great learning opportunity to work on a string and learn what it takes to get an animal ready to compete. I’m in the barns or show ring during the week and don’t attend the tradeshow, but I do know of people who just attend the tradeshow. They use it as an educational tool to better their dairy. The tradeshow provides that learning opportunity to increase production in a

Expo gives us a chance to see new products and visit with company representatives about questions or concerns with products we already use. Also, we like to see daughters out of different bulls that we might want to use in our herd. We like to pick up ideas on how to improve our own show string. Lastly, we feel more energized after networking with others who share a passion for the dairy industry.

MANDI BUE, WORLD DAIRY EXPO JUDGE
“I will never forget the rst time I saw Emoji, judging the Wisconsin Holstein Association All-Breeds Futurity in 2019,” Bue said. “My heart just stopped; it was love at rst sight.”That immediate attraction to Floydholm MC Emoji-ET EX-95 led
Jay and Heather Jauquet and Mike Holschbach, served as mentors.
She said she came to love working with dairy cows at a young age. She participated in the 4-H judging program; she said her coaches,
“Jay, Heather and Mike have all been very inuential in igniting the passion for this industry that has grown throughout my life,” Bue said. “Any time I get the opportunity to judge a show, I take it if at all possible regardless of the size.” Bue recalls her rst time standing in the center of a show ring at a small show in Champaign, Illinois. She said she is grateful for that rst judging job and every one that has come since then. Bue said her judging career started to pick up about ve years ago, when she judged the Wisconsin District 10 Holstein Show, after being nominated for the position by Ryan.Ofthe shows she has judged so far, one sticks out in Bue’s mind as a favorite, because she met a cow that quickly became special in her life.
Bue said she has gained valuable lessons from being married to a fellow judge.“As a judge, my husband has been my greatest supporter and also my harshest critic,” Bue said. “We do not always see eye to eye on cattle, but those discussions have helped me learn to better defend my thoughts and ideas, which makes my ability to voice my reasons that much better.”

analyzing and evaluating good cows,” Bue said. “Being asked to judge a show is the ultimate honor and not something I will ever take for granted.”
“Every time I judge a show, I learn a little more about myself, exactly what I like in dairy cattle,” Bue said. “Standing in the center of the ring has really brought about changes in the way I raise and manage my own heifers. I have learned more about exactly what kind of animal I want to see and how I want to see them looking in the show ring.”That insight has helped Bue hone her criteria, and that has given her the condence in going out and selecting those kinds of animals when she “Ijudges.like to see heifers that can give me a glimpse of what they will become as cows,” Bue said. “I have calved in enough heifers and milked enough cows to know I need heifers that have tremendous width, especially width about the muzzle; and I need them to have great spring and openness of rib. They have to be more than just a pretty side prole. When it comes to cows, I need all of that plus a great udder. And, I love youthful cows that wear well.”

The consistent results achieved by the aerosol spray adhesive may have come to be taken for granted, but over the past year, many have developed a new-found appreciation for the tried and true while the product has been in short supply.

“Clear Magic is a very important product for us as a company,” Sherwood said. “We have never had many back orders of Clear Magic and certainly never one like this.
And, Clear Magic is not the easiest product in the world to create, according to Sherwood.
“It failed miserably,” Buske said. “I’m not sure if the product itself has changed, or if our expectations have changed, but I found it did not workWhilewell.” clipping at the Ohio State Fair, Buske said Clear Magic was unavailable to him for setting toplines. He chose to work with Aussie instant freeze hairspray, which he said held up as well as could be expected in the hot and humid weather.
Schmidt said he had a different experience with the Aussie spray.
“Some people like the Aussie spray in the purple can, but I think it has too much of a sheen to it when it sets up,” Schmidt said. “I prefer the got2b blasting freeze spray. Why do you think World Dairy Expo is essential to the dairy industry? World Dairy Expo is essential to the dairy industry because it’s the biggest celebration of how far we’ve come. What is your favorite memory from World Dairy Expo? Eight years ago was my rst date with my now ancé, Graham. I was watching the Red and White Holstein show while I was waiting for him and got to see Luck-E Advent Kandie named senior champion and reserve grand champion. Little did I know a few years later I would be buying that cow and milking a barn full of her daughters.

MITCHELL, S.D. – For Austin Ripp, content creation on TikTok is the perfect hobby. It combines his two favorite things – dairy cows and video production.
“TikTok is unique because you don’t need followers to create engagement like you do on other platforms,” Ripp said. “You need people to interact with your post, whether that’s like, comment or share. That increases the chance of more people getting to see the video.”

One series Ripp has created on TikTok to increase his page engagement is a series titled Create Your Show String. The premise of the videos is assigning popular show cows a price and giving the viewer a hypothetical $5 to choose which cows to purchase.
Ripp looks forward to this year’s WDE. He is excited to shoot content for his TikTok page, see incredible show cows and learn from dairy cattlemen from around the world, he said.

“I saw this idea on Twitter with NBA players and choosing your roster, so I decided to translate it to dairy,” Ripp said. “People love it because they share it with their friends to discuss or argue.”Ripp produces all of the content himself. He does the research, lming and editing all from his smartphone.
Aus n Ripp created a TikTok video of the 2021 World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Shakira. The video received a lot of views, especially from dairy ca le enthusiasts.
Ripp grew up with an interest in video editing. His self-taught skills have allowed him to create creative and eye-catching content.

“I just try to absorb everything like a sponge,” Ripp said. “At Expo, you can learn from the best of the best.”

“We can get hands-on contact with any particular vendor...”
How does attending World Dairy Expo benet you and your dairy? We can get hands-on contact with any particular vendor we need more information from, which usually works better than a phone call.
What is one thing you implemented on your farm from World Dairy Expo? We invested in a feed mixing program from a vendor who was doing demonstrations. Prior to purchasing that, our nutritionist updated recipes on paper, and I would print them off and carry pieces of paper around with me. With this software program, my nutritionist can make changes from anywhere. I do it off of a tablet. If there’s a moisture change, I can make that, and the system automatically takes care of it. The program looks over my shoulder, keeping track of everything and has denitely improved accuracy. Seeing it in person at Expo helped convince me it was right for our farm.
What is your favorite memory from World Dairy Expo? My favorite memory is the beauty of the show ring each year and the passion of all the people who make it a go. I admire the work that goes into setting this up. It’s neat they’re willing to do this for a show that lasts only a few days.
Why do you think World Dairy Expo is essen tial to the dairy industry? It brings people from around the world together who have similar ideas and challenges.
Tell us about your farm and your plans for this fall. My wife, Laura, and I farm with our son, Eric. We also have two daughters and a son who work off the farm in agriculture jobs. We run about 500 acres and buy a lot of our feed We upgraded to a double-12 milking parlor last year. My family and I enjoy being involved in many parts of the industry. We have been blessed with some very good crops and hope the weather cooperates so we can safely and efciently get it harvested this fall.

Tell us about your farm and your plans for this fall. Linda and I milk around 80 cows and run about 350 acres and do a little cash cropping as well. This is Linda’s home farm, and we’ve been farming here since 1992. Our herd contains Holsteins, Red and Whites and Brown Swiss. Linda loves registered cows. We have won the Progressive Breeder Award for 11 years and have a BAA of 109. One of the cows we are most proud of is Mar-Linda-K Sweet Sensation – a homebred fth-generation Excellent cow scored EX-94. She has a lot of daughters and recently placed third at the Wisconsin State Holstein Show. Linda and I have two grown daughters, Kayla and Nicole, who have jobs off the farm. Kayla is involved with the farm quite a bit helping with chores every other weekend and helping Linda show cows.

How does attending World Dairy Expo benet you and your dairy? It helps us pick up on new technology to become more efcient and more protable. As a result, we have fewer animal headaches. We’ve become more proactive by incorporating ideas from WDE, and now, we don’t need the vet to come as often.
What is your favorite memory from World Dairy Expo? We had a cow named Mar-Linda-K Afrm Raelynn that we sold in 2010. In 2011, she was shown as a junior 3-year-old at Expo and did really well. She was pulled rst but ended up placing second in the junior show and was honorable mention intermediate champion. She was also junior All-American junior 3-year-old that year. That was really something to have one of our cows that we bred walk the colored shavings at Expo and place so high. In all, we watched this cow get shown three

times at Expo – once with our daughter at the halter. It was enjoyable watching our kids show at Expo. Sometimes we got lucky and were in the top 10, and sometimes we weren’t. In 2009, our youngest daughter was the rst junior in her Brown Swiss class with the rst Brown Swiss she ever owned. Another favorite memory is participating in the Forage Bowl. I was big into that in the 1990s, placing consistently in the top 10 with our corn silage. In 2001, our haylage won rst place. I also loved the time we won Packers tickets from one of the tradeshow drawings. And I can’t forget all the times we watched fellow breeders from our county walk during the supreme show.

What is one thing you implemented on your farm from World Dairy Expo? A ketosis tester that analyzes blood ketones instead of taking a milk sample. You get a quicker response for treating ketosis by nding ketotic cows sooner. The tester helped us manage ketosis better so that now we’re on top of this; it really changed our operation. Another product idea was a calcium bolus for milk fever. We give it to mature cows when they calve and again 12 hours later, and it has done wonders for us. These two items are benecial to all dairies regardless of size. Sometimes it’s the little things that really help; it doesn’t have to always be a big investment. In addition, powdered colostrum has been benecial to us and proven to be an efcient way to feed newborns instead of defrosting colostrums from the freezer. We also put in a pasteurizer for feeding calves which was a huge improvement. Adding brown mid-rib corn back into our crops and ration was another idea we got from Expo, and it improved varieties and has increased our milk production.

You always need new technology, and Expo kind of gives you that next step you need to advance your operation.
What are three things you are looking forward to doing this year at World Dairy Expo? I would like to attend some of the seminars. I never really paid any attention to them before, but I think I could learn something, so I’m going to give it a try. I always like looking at the tradeshow. My wife, Linda can sit and watch the cattle show all day, but that’s just not my cup of tea. I also like to visit with people from Canada and other countries to discuss how farming is different there than here. The technology at WDE kind of blows me away. There is a lot of stuff for the big guy, and it’s remarkable how much the industry has changed in 40 years.

“The carbon credit market is really promising and exciting,” she said. “The revenue streams have proven to be true; however, this is not a silver bullet. These markets come with challenges too. There is a lot of complexity in this space and growing credibility to consider. It’s important to keep track of how the markets are evolving.”Carbon markets come at a high cost and have historically been viewed as an opportunity for larger producers; however, Boehl said there is a pathway being forged for all farms to take advantage of these markets.
“Being a part of the climate solution while accessing opportunities across the entire farm is an area all dairy farmers need to be aware of,” she said. “This is a great opportunity, and I believe the interest is going to stay. Thursday, Oct. 6 at noon: “Could activists carry away your dairy?” with Abby Kornegay, Manager, Issues and Engagement, Animal Agriculture Alliance Sponsored by: Effercept State legislative measures dictating animal care are often lobbied for by animal rights activist extremist organizations and have the potential to impact farmers’ and ranchers’ ability to provide safe, nutritious, and affordable animal products for all. These activist-led ballot initiatives and other legislative measures also spread misinformation about animal agriculture and create conversation and precedent for more extreme measures to be introduced in the future. In this session, attendees will learn about recent legislative campaigns impacting the dairy community and what can be done to safeguard the future of dairy.

The industry has traditionally talked about a tradeoff between milking a cow quickly, gently, and completely, but does this still hold true? This seminar will delve into the details of the milking routine and explore the topic of bimodal milk ow curves and how to avoid them on your dairy. Discover the latest research which shows that getting it right on every cow on your dairy can pay big dividends not only by decreasing milking time and the risk of mastitis but also by increasing the amount of high-quality milk produced.

They have evolved over that time to accommodate changes in technology, consumer preferences, and structure of the industry. However, their basic tools—classied pricing and pooling—are not fundamentally different than they were in the 1940s. “We milk about 1,000 cows near Mifinburg, PA. As many of us know 2018 corn silage wasn’t very good feed. I started reading the adver sing from RECAL Microbials and thought ‘what the heck’ and called about it. I talked to Jamie Troxel about the RECAL and he wanted to come to my farm and see with his own eyes what was going on before he would even sell me any of the product because, like he said, ‘every farm is di erent’. So, I thought why not, what’s it going to hurt? Plus, I liked the idea that he was willing to come out instead of working over the phone.

I have been very happy with the RECAL probio cs and would highly recommend it to all dairymen. It’s not an expense when you see a return on your investment.”

At the Legacy Dairy location, a calf barn was built in 2015 introducing the farm to automatic feeding stations. The rst lactation animals are also milked at this site in a double-12 parallel parlor three times a day. Cows that need extra attention - fresh cows and hospital cows –are cared for at the namesake dairy, Homestead Dairy, as it also houses the maternity area and utilizes a double-25 parallel parlor. There was NO comparison, a er about three days the groups that were on the RECAL showed more consistency in the manure and stronger heats. We saw no change in the groups that were not on RECAL. My Cargill nutri onist even came in and performed manure screenings for the controlled groups and was very impressed with the di erence in ber diges on. I then put the whole herd on RECAL PLUS and pulled out the toxin binder, yeast and bentonite I was feeding. We didn’t see much di erence in milk produc on but our %BF went from about 3.65% to about 4%. We have also started feeding the RECAL Calf Powder to all of our calves and my wife who takes care of the calves has been very happy with it as well.
During Expo’s Virtual Farm Tours, dairy owners and managers share a visual presentation with time for questions and an open discussion afterward. Tours are presented, Tuesday - Friday, in Mendota Room 1 of the Exhibition Hall at 10:00 a.m.
So that’s what we did. I started feeding the RECAL PLUS to two groups of milk cows, the pre fresh cows and fresh cows. I had also been feeding another probio c to my pre fresh and fresh cows but switched them to the RECAL. I started feeding the probio c that I had been using to the other two groups to make the trial even be er. Jamie also pulled a TMR sample and sent it to Cumberland Valley Analy cal for a toxin test and it came back at 3.5 ppm vomitoxin.

Bateman’sMountainsMosida Farms is considered one of the most progressive dairy operations in the country. In recent years, they have been on the cutting edge of sustainability technology, including testing a revolutionary robotic foragegrowing system and constructing a new robotic dairy that will serve as a research facility to evaluate new technologies, products and processes.
Farms takes initiative in practicing environmental preservation with several programs. The farm is MAEAP (Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program) accredited, which is a voluntary program in Michigan to verify the on-farm and cropping practices are in line with environmental preservation. Walnutdale Farms is also part of the FARM Environmental Stewardship program. The Lettinga family has made sharing their passion for agriculture and their dairy farming story a priority with local and international communities. Walnutdale has hosted many in-person and virtual farm tours and welcomes people to learn about the dairy often. In addition to teaching their local community about agriculture, they are also involved in a dairy project with “Growing Hope Globally” program with their local church. This program uses dairy farming education within the community to raise money to provide aid to Kenyan farmers, teaching them how to grow food for themselves and for income.

As a dairyman, are you looking to improve the way your fresh cows transition, take off, peak and breed back? Looking to improve rumen health, rumen function, overall health, digestion, feed efficiency, and YOUR BOTTOM LINE??? If so, then…
We were not having any major issues but we were seeing very inconsistent manure and weren’t seeing cows coming into heat. Jamie came to the farm, asked me some ques ons about how the cows were doing, looked at my ra on and silage, and walked the cows. Right away he picked out the inconsistent manure and no ced that we had a lot of ber passing through. Jamie then pulled silage samples and checked the dry ma ers right then with Koster testers he carries in his truck. He told me he was sure that I was dealing with a mycotoxin issue even though I was already feeding a name brand binder, yeast and bentonite.
Go by what the cows say, they don’t lie!!! For less than $0.08/cow/day, you will see a di erence
Jamie began telling me about the di erences in the three RECAL probio c products and recommended the RECAL PLUS. He told me that I could pull out my toxin binder, yeast and bentonite. He also o ered me a thirty-day trial. If I wanted to try the product, he would give me the product for thirty days, tell me what to watch for and a er the thirty days if I wasn’t happy with the RECAL I paid absolutely nothing. But if I did like the product then I paid for the product used in the trial and we kept doing business together. With the way I am set up the only way he would do this trial was if we put some groups on the RECAL and not other groups, so we had a controlled trial. This way I could really see the di erence. Since o ers like this don’t come around every day I thought why not, plus I liked the way Jamie wanted to prove the product and expressed that much con dence that it would work.
robots, constructed with a focus on cow comfort. The Houin family also embraces progressive management of their manure. A methane digester, built in 2013, creates enough electricity to power 1,000 homes, and a manure dryer, added in 2019, is creating dried manure solids for bedding and liquid manure used as fertilizer on their elds. With the addition of the robot barn, Homestead Dairy, LLC is also able to recycle water four times before it is used to irrigate crop land.
The RECAL line of probio cs is NOT just another probio c on the market. RECAL is a probio c heavily weighted towards be er diges on and u liza on, primarily FIBER DIGESTION. There are a lot of nutrients in your forages that can be u lized by improving diges on.
