stay strong, be bold. Somato is a conceptual led design project creating casual street wear aimed at a younger men’s market. The collection is experimental of the male form and strongly inspired by the human anatomy, stripped to it’s elemental musculature. The collection is purposefully constructed to appear muscular and larger in shape, predicting a future trend where obesity has shaped a new body ideal. This project looks ahead into the world of 2050 where I am suggesting a new body ideal has formed. Following the obesity epidemic of 2030 having a larger figure is the ‘new norm’ accepted by society, however a back lash against being fat has emerged and body building is redefining obesity. The body ideal of the 26th century is purposefully built to be bigger, generating body mass for strength.

IS OBESITY A MATTER OF PERCEPTION?
For centuries both men and women have tried to artificially attain an ideal silhouette. From wide hipper pannier dresses to tight laced corsets, bulging male torsos and false calves, a concelaled archetecture has moulded the body into the fashionable line of the time. Somato re-imagine these structures and proves our enduring fascination with manipulating body shape. Undergarments evolve as changing fashions, new materials and new manufacturing techniques combine with shifting ideas of propriety. Today diet, exercise and cosmetic surgery play a greater role in achiving our ideal body image but there is a growing movement with the fashion industry to reflect and celebrate the diversity of our bodies. With this in mind, I am suggeting that by 2050 following the obesity epidemic predctions of 2030 we, as a society will have become so used to a larger figure that it becomes the new norm and dieting becomes a thing of the past. Rather than being shamed as fat we now purposefully silhoue build our silhouettes to be bigger and stronger. Popular fitness regimes will include weightlifting, and cross fit, building the body to redifine obesity.
