Session 3 - Race Matters, Dissecting The Digital Divide #smwRACEMATTERS
3:00~ 5:00
Race Matters was born out of the need to find solutions for Compton High School’s principal and a science teacher to get their kids a STEM program that they can be proud of. This discussion will examine the success and struggle in tackling all aspects of the new digital divide or their risk in failing more students and falling further behind in the global race to produce a more competitive workforce.
3.00~ 5:00
What we know: Less than half of minority households have access to computers with the Internet, versus more than two-thirds of white households. Even though more than 90 percent of schools today have computers with Internet access, the computers are often too old to be compatible with current educational software and the Internet access often is slow and unreliable. What we’ve targeted: Students in poorer and largely minority schools generally have less access to the computers, software, and online learning tools that could possibly make a real difference in their education. A new digital divide has emerged: between those educators, parents and students re-imagining teaching and learning for the 21st century using technology, and those who are not. What we’re doing: Recruiting activist technologist, social media engineers, public and private partners such as The California Emerging Technology Fund CETF to band together to provide hardware, software, universal high speed Internet access to targeted schools like Compton High school. What’s the desired outcome: Create and share through social networks and virtual townhalls successful case studies such as; Waldorf Schools, ConnectToCompete, and longer school-open hours to shrink the digital divide that kids face during the hours and days they’re not in school without broadband in the home. Lastly training for teachers so that they understand how best to use technology. Panelists:
