Introduce Yourself

WELCOME TO THE ARTS EXPO!

Walk up, shake hands, state your name, tell the recruiter your area of interest and start a conversation! Remember to speak up if it’s crowded or noisy. If there’s a long line, consider visiting a less crowded booth first, then coming back when the group at the first booth is a bit smaller. Make sure you can be heard and get your questions answered!

Ask Questions

This is your chance to learn things about these schools you can’t glean from their websites or brochures. Ask the representatives about their arts programs and your field of study, but also about the campus environment, the mix of students, the surrounding city, the student housing. These people already live and work where you are considering going to school - they are great sources of information about life in and out of class or the studio.

GRAND VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC AND DANCE Where inspired artistry, creative performance, and personalized attention become one.

Use the checklists for Juniors and Seniors on the next page as a guide to help you with your college admisions process. They’re full of reminders to take the necessary steps to promote yourself and your work to colleges and universities anywhere!

What We Do Michigan Youth Arts Festival The only state-wide, multidisciplinary, high school arts festival in the nation; a showcase for arts education best practices; a celebration of the artistic excellence of Michigan’s young artists; a gathering of leaders in arts education, and a forum for recognizing superb arts educators - the Festival is a Michigan tradition celebrating its 52nd anniversary. For complete information and application guidelines, visit michiganyoutharts.org. Advocacy Michigan Youth Arts Festival

Arts Education Advocacy The Michigan Youth Arts Leadership Roundtable and the annual Policy Forum bring together representatives from arts education associations and government agencies, to craft policy initiatives and generate dialogue to shape arts education policy and practice in Michigan. The annual Touchstone Awards are bestowed annually on arts educators who exemplify best-practices in arts education, have a record of advocacy for arts programs, and a continued commitment to artistic excellence. The 2011/2012 Michigan Arts Education Survey conducted in partnership with the Michigan Department of Education, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and ArtServe Michigan, was the first Michigan study to include information about the status of arts education at the school building level, and examine the depth and breadth of student learning in the visual and performing arts. Data identified blue ribbon schools in the arts, and provided a framework for advocacy efforts to ensure access to quality arts education throughout the state. Visit our arts education resource page or subscribe to our monthly newsletter at michiganyoutharts.org. Grantmaking Beginning in the 2013-14 school year, Michigan Youth Arts will provide arts-related bus and field trip grants to Michigan schools. For information and application guidelines visit us at michiganyoutharts.org.
