Director’s Note
All in the Timing is, as you will soon discover, a wickedly contemporary assault on just about everything we have kept quiet about ‘til now. That includes what to do or say in a romance, scientific studies using lab animals, our desire to have one world, con games, understanding Avant Garde art and culture, alternate universes, the oneness of all living creatures, political heroes, and the sanctity of couplehood. It seems a lot for one evening, unless it’s funny. Well, it is. Playwright David Ives’ – the newest 60 year-old enfant terrible of the American theatre -- has cut and sewn an evening quilt of America between 1995 and 2015, and he serves it to us tonight to enjoy. There are eight one-act plays here, each easily served á la Carte, but tonight you get the full dinner. These mesmerizing sketches are the best of their breed, and this talented Hilberry Company is having a great time doing them. It is in that spirit that we invite you to think (but no too hard) about life stages or common experiences or – well, you go ahead and choose what you want to think about and laugh about. It’s really up to you. Enjoy! David J. Magidson, Director

A Conversation with David Ives Ives looks for unusual subject matter; he considers it a personal challenge. And he likes to challenge actors; not because of hostility towards them -- just the opposite. He thinks actors deserve more credit than playwrights. “I can sit comfortably in the back of the theatre, while they’re up there risking everything.” Some actors say they’ve taken his roles because they thought his ideas were too crazy to be staged and wanted to see for themselves. “I’m a trouble-maker,” he said. “I like to create problems.” Ives gets inspiration from music and art more than from attending theatre. He noted that many more enduring pieces of music have been written since 1600, and more composers are remembered than all the writers of theatre “from Aeschylus to Albee.” His idea of paradise would be to spend his life inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art. These musings come as little surprise to theatregoers who remember Ives’ parody of Philip Glass in All in the Timing and his riff on the life of Degas in Mere Mortals.
Why are so many of Ives’ plays short? “I’m impatient,” Ives said. “When I watch a play I say ‘Okay, I get the point, now end it. I don’t want to see any more.’ I like things short and to the point.” Was the difficult thing about getting All in the Timing done because it was an anthology? “Not only was it an anthology, it was one-act plays. Everybody said no one wanted to see an evening of one-act plays.” God, it’s sure a lost art, isn’t it? “It is a lost art because there’s not much of a place to do it. That’s why the Punch Line Theatre in Manhattan was so great. It was a great time for one-acts. I actually think the one-act play is a particularly rich medium for theatre because you don’t have to fill 90 minutes or two hours. You can fundamentally do whatever you want, so the range of things that happen is much wider than it is in conventional two-hour plays. You don’t have to adhere to reality quite so much. It almost encourages poetry in a certain way because one-act plays are so often made of one image or one particular happening that explodes for ten minutes, then stops. The intensity is all the greater because it’s so short. It challenges a playwright’s talent for compression, for making every word count, which is something I really like.” Two things from that show have stayed with me all these years. The first, from Variations on the Death of Trotsky, was the image of Trotsky going about his business, oblivious to the fact he has a mountain-climber’s ax in his head. “Don’t all of us have an ax in our head, and aren’t we oblivious to it?”
I do know your style and interest in theatre has changed in terms of what you’re writing now. It truly has matured. You could have gone through life Mr. Smart-Ass. “Yes. I got tired of having the word “clever” attached to my name. I actually dislike clever playwrights, so I didn’t want to be one of those. Clever is interesting for a minute and then not, so I just thought of other things I wanted to explore. I felt like, Yes, I could keep on writing smart-ass, one-act plays, but there were other things to be plumbed.”

The Understudies
Leonard Leone with The Understudies in 1985
The Understudies was created in 1964 to foster interest in the Wayne State University Theatres and to support the Hilberry Theatre graduate program by fundraising, promoting excellence, and developing audiences. Following the first season, President Hilberry approached a group of community leaders to form The Understudies to ensure the continuity of the Company and the theatre. Fundraising through The Understudies allowed the Hilberry company to admit technical theatre students and give them fellowships beginning in the “The Understudies was created to foster third season. interest in and provide support to the Since then, the organization Hilberry Theatre graduate program.” has raised in excess of $ 2.5 million to support the mission. Today, The Understudies raise funds to build community support, as well as subsidize up to 40 assistantships each season for the Hilberry Theatre Graduate Repertory Company students. The Understudies remain very involved with the Maggie Allessee Department of Theatre and Dance. They host opening night “behind-the-scenes” receptions and special events throughout the year designed to garner support for graduate theatre, and partner with other organizations that drive the arts and theatre in Greater Detroit. Besides interacting with the future standouts on stage, in costume, scenic and lighting design, and theatre and stage management, The Understudies welcome company members into their families by becoming “stage parents,” and providing support for company members working long hours and away from home. Some Understudies and Hilberry Company members at The Understudies luncheon in 2013.
