timelessdance. The Wayne State University Dance Company, previously known as the Dance Workshop, was started in 1928 when “natural dancing (after Isadora Duncan) was popular. Its first dance concert was presented in the auditorium of Northern High School. The performance was under the direction of Ruth Lovell Murray as The Dance Club of Detroit Teachers College. Over the years under various names and directors, dedicated dance students gathered on weekday evenings and weekend mornings to create and rehearse dances. They produced dance concerts in local high school auditoriums, studio spaces in the Old Main Building, at the Bonstelle Theater, and later at the Community Arts Auditorium. The Workshop provided, then as it does now, an environment for dance. This experience has fostered growth of individuals, provided fertile ground for new ideas, and the development of technical and choreographic skills.
faculty&friends. Faculty & Friends kicks off the invigorating Dance Performance Season. This single night concert features the work of current and past Wayne State dance faculty, as well as invited alumni. The program is a glimpse into the multiple directions in which contemporary dance is heading. Often, the use of multi-media projection components and performance-driven technology tranforms the performance space into geographic environments, as well as videos of dance that round out the program. Exciting, engaging and forward-thinking in its presentation of dance.
The annual Noel Night takes place on the first Saturday in December. Over 70 institutions, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Michigan Science Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Historical Museum, and the Detroit Public Library, will open their doors to the public free of charge during this Cultural Centerwide holiday open house.
Wayne State’s College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts shares in the Noel Night merriment throughout Midtown, and contributes numerous events and invites you to include these as you plan what to attend around Midtown that Saturday evening.
Thousands of children, teachers and parents attend this annual concert each November. During the fall and winter semesters, On Stage! tours to area schools where company members perform and teach children who are eager to explore dance.

springdance. Presented the weekend following the week of Spring Break, the annual spring dance concert is presented in a formal setting and to a more mature audience, is produced each spring at the Bonstelle Theater.
It has been the pinnacle of dance on the national stage since the early 1900s. Rooted in the cultural community that is Detroit, the Artist-In-Residence program features national and international artistry, providing an expansive environment for our emerging artists to develop. This is the culmination of that development.
capstone. The final day of classes in Winter term at Wayne State brings another chance to celebrate: A showcase of dances choreographed by Senior BFA Dance Majors at the culmination of their WSU experience.
Each year, the senior capstone showcase features compelling dance works created by the graduating class - an exhibition of choreographic craft honed over their four years of training at Wayne State.
The Wayne State University Dance Department serves as the primary source for preparing dance majors for the dance profession by offering opportunities in choreography and performance. All companies connect with the community through outreach programs including lecture demonstrations, master classes, concerts and collaborative projects for both the public and private sectors, promoting the art of dance locally, nationally and on a global level.
