College Nannies + Sitters + Tutors Helps To Build Stronger Families
B
ack to school time often means a dramatic change in a family’s schedule. Enter College Nannies, Sitters and Tutors: The nation’s most respected, complete and professional resource helping busy families raise smart, confident, well-adjusted kids. Since 2001, this national company has built local professional teams across the country who have helped hundreds of busy parents carve out time for themselves with a sitter, have help on hand with a part-time or full-time nanny, or get their college bound student the tutoring they need to succeed. Local owners Katie and Kenneth Mothershed are passionate about providing the highest quality child care and tutoring services to help families in the Metro East find work-life balance, enjoy a night out, have reliable back up care when typical child care arrangements fall through, or a little extra homework help and test prep for college-bound students. “After years of working in the health care industry I watched countless peers struggle with finding high quality child care that could seamlessly accommodate changing schedules and on call hours,” Katie Mothershed explained. “I knew there had to be a better way. This led my husband and I to bring College Nannies, Sitters and Tutors to the Metro East. We are helping to build stronger families by providing fully screened, reference and background checked nannies, sitters and tutors to the area.” First of all, whatever service is needed, there is a meeting in the home to determine the best route of care:
College Nannies
Offering full- or part-time, summer and/or after school Nannies, Mothershed said with a Nanny, “your child can grow and develop with one-on-one care in your own home. Having a trained, educated full-time College Nanny at home will help you take control of it all. We will take on the burden of searching for the right fit for your family then ensure you always have back up care if your Nanny is sick or needs a day off.”
College Sitters
With the College Sitter’s help, busy families can rest assured that each caregiver is a trained professional. “Our sitters are, simply put, positive role models who are responsible - and fun!” she said. There is a mobile APP - “My Sitters” - that allows 24/7 scheduling of care - quickly and conveniently.
College Tutors
Another facet of the business is helping to prepare students for college tests plus other tutoring for essay writing, study skills, basic homework help in math and science. These services are provided in the home or at a local library. Tutors can even help with school pick up.
Church Care
“It takes a lot to run an effective, supportive, engaging nursery program. And every week you spend countless hours planning, looking for volunteer staff and scheduling,” Mothershed said. “If you don’t have a fully staffed, well thought-out program, young families may struggle to engage with your service and community. This is where we can step in and help find the right people to work with your church members to provide a secure, professional environment.” College Nannies, Sitters and Tutors is set to lend a hand in any way this school year: “Our Nannies, Sitters and Tutors are available to your family when it fits your schedule,” she said. Interested in service? Visit the web site at www.collegesitters.com/edwardsvilleil and complete the brief form at the top of the page. College Nannies, Sitters and Tutors will reach out to schedule a family meeting. Clients may also email edwardsvilleil@collegenannies.com or call (618) 551-0363.

August is National Children’s Vision and Learning Month • frequent loss of place while reading • complains words move on the page • short attention span • smart in everything but school • labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic • working below potential Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist. A Developmental Vision Evaluation is needed to test all of the visual skills critical to reading and learning: eye movement control, focusing near to far, sustaining clear focus, eye teaming ability, depth perception, visual motor integration, visual memory and visual perceptual skills.
A
s children are headed back to school it’s time to take a moment to review how vision problems can interfere with a child’s ability to read and learn. One out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems: “60 percent of kids with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems,” according to a conservative estimate from the American Optometric Association. Too often parents assume that if a child passes a vision screening that everything is fine with their eyes, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Being able to see things clearly far away is no guarantee that a child can see things up close. In order to read, children not only have to see the letters clearly, but they have to be able to move their eyes easily from left to right (tracking) and be able to see for a long period of time. August is National Children’s Vision and Learning month to help bring attention to the critical role vision plays in a child’s education. Therefore it is vital that parents and educators know the signs that indicate that vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties: • headaches when reading • slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • avoidance of reading • poor reading comprehension
According to Dr. Thomas Unger of Troy, “The good news is that unlike other disabilities, the majority of vision based learning problems can be fixed.” For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 667-2020 or visit his web site at www.ungereyecare.com.
From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.
Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?
• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?
• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?
ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%
correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Safety Is #1 Priority For Outdoor Fun Since 1991, Dream Play Recreation has offered a colorful myriad of the highest quality playground and recreational equipment on the market. Dream Play offers the highest quality in residential play equipment, Rainbow Play Systems " AMERICA'S MOST TRUSTED NAME BRAND," Goalsetter and Goalrilla basketball goals, and the revolutionary Springfree Trampoline. “Safety is a huge parental concern: the playsets and trampolines we offer are the safest, and best built in the country,” said Tim Albers, owner. “Plus, our in-house installers take all the safety parameters into account to ensure a safe play environment once the equipment is installed. Dream Play will make sure the job is done right.”
“These goals have no peers in terms of build quality, functionality and durability. We also carry Goalrilla basketball goals. They have really upped their game in the market with their ‘Clear View’ line-up of goals made to mimic the look of basketball goals you see in college and professional arenas, and also come with a lifetime warranty.” And for fun plus fantastic health benefits, Springfree Trampolines are the safest trampoline in the world. “Springfree is the only trampoline I will carry. Simply put, they have engineered 90 percent of all product related injuries that occur on trampolines out of the product. There are no springs or metal frame to fall on and you can’t fall out. Plus, the net is not held up with steel poles that also cause injury,” he said. Springfree uses flexible glass infused rods for its bounce. The rods lie beneath the jumping surface out of harms way. Traditional trampolines have springs that give it the bounce, and despite safety pads, can still injure.
The premium brand of playsets that Dream Play carries is Rainbow Play Systems because it offers only the best in quality, safety, value and expandability. Rainbow, which started in 1985, has the largest swing set factory in the world and is located in Brookings, South Dakota. “All Rainbow Play Systems are constructed of cedar, which are naturally resistant to insects and decay, making it the best choice for any outdoor playset. All the edges of the wood are routed, rounded, sanded smooth and pre-stained from the factory. In addition, using only true construction size beams, all the major joints are throughbolted, some using triple joint construction, and secured with half-inch commercial hardware,” Albers said. “No other playset company makes their products this way. Cedar also takes stain well so it’s not as maintenance intense as other lumber. Rainbow Play Systems are simply the best made swing sets in America.”
“The health benefits of trampolines have long been known: 10 minutes on a trampoline is equal to 30 minutes of jogging. Astronauts train on trampolines. With Springfree, you can have all the benefits without the negatives,” Albers said. In addition, Springfree offers a 10-year warranty, which is unmatched in the industry.
When it comes to basketball goals, Dream Play offers the best built goals you can buy. Goalsetter is 100 percent American made with a lifetime warranty.
Dream Play Recreation invites all customers to experience their 12,000-squarefoot showroom – one of the largest in the country – filled with 19 playsets, nine basketball goals in a court area, three trampolines and four sport trainers on display ready for your test play. Dream Play Recreation is located at 17373 Edison Avenue in Chesterfield, MO; (636) 530-0055 or (800) 962-0055; www.dreamplayrec.com.

Fischer Lumber: THE Source For The Best Lumber In The Region
F
amily-owned Fischer Lumber Company has been in business since 1941 and today serves as one of the Metro East’s few full-service, locally owned lumberyards. Since its inception, the company has more than tripled in size and expanded its services, and products, to include kitchen and bath design, custom roof truss orders, regional delivery service and a full selection of windows, doors, roofing shingles, decking and more. Located on Shamrock Street in the heart of East Alton, Fischer Lumber boasts a 10,000-square-foot warehouse stocked full of highquality lumber. Fischer Lumber Co. is an 80-percent-based contractor yard; however, it still serves a large range of customers from building contractors, government agencies, small businesses, hospitals, churches and factories to individual trade. The company strives to cater to all customers and their individual lumber needs. This includes deliveries within a 60-mile radius, which makes for a good amount of business on both sides of the river. Fischer Lumber Co. isn’t only known for carrying the best in lumber for the homebuilder and home remodeler. More and more customers come in for kitchen and bath designs, lumber take-offs, and estimations if clients bring in blueprints. Being deemed a full-service lumberyard is one thing, but the company now considers itself a full-service, contractor-oriented lumberyard. From cabinets to windows, millwork to roof trusses, they have it. Fischer Lumber is able to supply material for residential and light commercial projects. The company offers a line of quality products including,
but not limited to Marvin new construction and replacement windows; Hörmann garage doors; Larson storm doors; Vytex Prestige vinyl siding; GAF shingles; Bertch, Timberlake and Holiday cabinets. In 2011, the company expanded even further by opening Fischer Window and Door in Brentwood, Mo. This location is a full-service Marvin Window and Door distributor and offers the most comprehensive display of Marvin Window and Door products in the St. Louis area. Marvin Window and Door specializes in offering products that are built around the customer’s ideas, with countless opportunities for customization and a variety of design options. With more than 160 years of combined industry experience, the staff at Fischer Window and Door is readily available to help clients find the right product for their project, whether it's new construction, commercial or residential. It is with great pride that the Fischer’s have watched their business succeed and grow in East Alton and beyond. As of today, Fischer Lumber provides jobs to 44 full-time employees. And as a testament to the company’s longstanding success, many of the employees have been with the Fischer’s for more than 30 years, which demonstrates their level of knowledge and experience. For more information about Fischer Lumber or for help with a building/remodel project, stop by its showroom at 210 N. Shamrock, East Alton, visit www.fischerlumber.com or call (618) 259-7434.

Archway Cooling And Heating:
The Right Way For 50 Years
C
elebrating almost 50 years in business, Archway Cooling and Heating was so named after the majestic Gateway Arch that had been recently completed on the banks of the Mississippi River. Mel Southerland, a skilled cooling and heating serviceman, was working at the time as a sheet metal worker when he decided the time was right to start his own business in 1969.
Today the business is mostly evenly split between new construction, residential replacement and service. Archway also does some light commercial work. Their busiest time of the year is the three “crazy months of summer! People seem to have a much lower tolerance for humidity with high temperatures as opposed to dry, cold air," Jones said. As a “cream of the crop” cooling and heating company, they are proud to offer the top-of-the-line product and that would be Trane. They are a Trane Comfort Specialist, and their highly skilled NATE-certified technicians are committed to providing only the best, most knowledgeable service in the area. This is how Archway has maintained an A+ rating with the BBB for more than three decades.
Soon thereafter, Southerland’s stepson, Bob Jones, along with Bob’s wife, Margaret, joined the company in 1971 and helped turn it into the business it is today: A family-owned and operated company with a fully staffed, and stocked service department providing 24-hour service by NATE-certified technicians. Keeping it all in the family, three of the five Jones children are maintaining the business and “Dad” (Bob Jones) stops by every day for lunch. His son Mike is Operations Manager, daughter Julie Burckhardt is Office Manager and daughter Jean Bergan is Service Manager. And currently, they are training the fourth generation! As they reminisced on a particularly cool July morning, they remembered the first location in Belleville was at North Illinois and A streets - that area is now a part of Renner Funeral Home. They moved their business to what was once their home in the historic area of downtown Belleville. “We would be sitting in this very same place and the phone would constantly ring through dinner and into the night - we have always been 24-hour service and at that time Dad answered the phone himself at all hours of the day,” said Mike Jones.
Indeed, they have installed and serviced Trane brand equipment for almost 40 years, which is a testament to the company's commitment to quality. Archway has been among the top 10 Trane dealers of all the 278 Trane dealers in Illinois, Missouri and Iowa for most of the past 10 years, and has received numerous awards for consumer satisfaction.
Archway services Belleville, O’Fallon, Waterloo, Freeburg, Mascoutah, Fairview Heights, Millstadt, Swansea and all the surrounding area: St. Clair, Clinton, Madison, Monroe and Randolph counties in Illinois. Please visit the comprehensive web site at archwaycooling.com for specials, testimonials and helpful energy tips. Call (618) 234-2810 to request service or for an estimate.

Designing A New Home? Don’t Overlook the Window Treatments
S
o many material selections and decisions are made during the design of a new home that it’s easy to overlook the importance of planning ahead for window treatments. With average costs of $150-$450 for each 3’ x 5’ window, take time to consider the types of windows and window coverings before construction. An experienced window treatment professional can help design cost effective, energy efficient, visually balanced, functional and beautiful solutions.
Selection of the Window: Style, Shapes, Sizes and Location
Dramatic circle, arch and angled windows located high on the south and west facing walls of a home brings the warmth of the sun in January, but what kinds of window treatments will you need in July when your air conditioner is running from dawn until dusk? Placement of windows like these on the north and east facing sides of a new home may be a better decision. Consider the limited options in window treatments that will be available for those specialty shapes. Are you prepared to motorize these treatments? If so, consider bringing power to the windows during construction or plan to keep a ladder handy to change the batteries annually. Leaning toward casement window systems? Certain types of associated cranks will get in the way of many window treatment options. This type of window often provides only a ½” of space inside the opening for the installation of window treatment brackets. An inside mounted shade in a casement window can result in a treatment that protrudes into the room and may not fully lower due to the crank location. Face mounting your window treatment on these windows can cover most of the casement trim and force products to protrude even further into the room creating light or privacy gaps, and exposed hardware problems that require an additional layer of side panels or top treatments to mask them.
Window Jamb Depths
When planning the depth of window jambs, think big. Many of the beautiful new products on the market today require larger headrails. While a 2 ½” jamb is common and will provide adequate room for many treatments, a 4” jamb depth will allow the homeowner to recess almost everything currently available including the dual treatments that provide both room darkening and light filtering options in one window. Deep jambs are especially useful with a crank operated window to prevent the window treatment from hanging up on the operating hardware when it’s raised or lowered.
Shutters
If plantation shutters are appealing, considerations can be made that saves money and insures a beautiful installation. Shutters can interfere with the operation of tilt-in windows if not engineered properly. Ask the builder to leave the maximum amount of tilt-in clearance on both sides of the operable window sash which will receive shutters. Pre-planning with a window treatment professional – like Eye on Design - and the contractor will provide a well-integrated and flawless end result that will provide years of energy efficiency, low maintenance and beauty.
Drapery
If drapery panels and custom valances are desired, think about the placement of the windows on the wall space of these rooms. To insure a balanced final result, consider the placement of future built-ins and large furniture pieces. Make plans to center the windows on the remaining wall spaces. Ask the contractor to pay special attention to maintaining equal amounts of drywall between multiple windows, centering windows equally within bay openings and providing equal amounts of drywall on each side of windows flanking the fireplace or king size beds. To keep drapery from becoming air filters for the home, make sure that air vents are not located where drapery would hang. Create clearance between crown molding and the top of the window for the application of brackets and drapery hardware, and consider light switch placement to prevent conflicts.

St. Paul’s UCC Welcomes Home New Pastor
R
ev. Michelle L. Torigian was welcomed with open arms on July 8 as the new senior pastor at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Belleville. While she was coming here from St. Paul United Church of Christ in Cincinnati, in reality, she is coming home in the literal sense of the word. Having been born and raised right here where she went to Queen of Peace and Belleville West High School, she is happy to be back close to her family, including her mother in Belleville, and sister in Champaign. Daughter of Vincent Torigian, the well-loved and respected Civics and American History teacher at West, Rev. Torigian said she would like to carry on her father’s community minded spirit where he taught and practiced “loving our neighbor.” Since arriving to town, she has been very busy getting to know church members and others throughout the town. “I want to hear what’s going on and figure out new ways to help the spiritual needs of our community,” Rev. Torigian said. “Just like my dad, I want to find ways for us to love our neighbors in our church and throughout the area.” Prior to being called to the ministry, Torigian worked in fund raising and marketing for nonprofit organizations, including Junior Achievement and the Greater Largo Chamber of Commerce among others. “Pastoral care has always
been important to me, even in childhood - it’s part of who I am,” she said. “I found myself at a vocational crossroads and it seemed natural to combine my particular gifts - writing, public speaking, compassion, empathy - and enter the seminary.” She then attended and graduated from Eden Theological Seminary in 2010. She obtained her bachelors from Fontbonne University in 1995. Rev. Torigian is the author of a number of articles on the Huffington Post Religion page. A favorite is “Between Childless and Childfree,” a reflection for Mother’s Day. She has also written various pieces for the United Church of Christ, including for the New Sacred (www.newsacred. org) blog, the worship service for General Synod in 2015, and the UCC Daily Devotional (www.ucc.org). Her essay, “Always the Pastor, Never the Bride,” was published in the book “There’s a Woman in the Pulpit.” The essay, “Worshiping in the Gaps: Developing Unique Worship Services” is published in the book “Sacred Habits: Rise of the Creative Clergy.” In addition, Rev. Torigian has written pieces for the 2017 book “A Child Laughs.” And she regularly posts her musings on current events, justice issues, pop culture and theology at www.michelletorigian.com. Please feel free to visit St. Paul UCC at 115 West B Street in Belleville and the web site at www.stpaulucc.org. For more information call

ver the last few years, Midwest Wingfest has served more than 100,000 people over 400,000 wings. Festival goers will find even more amazing features this year with more vendors than ever plus fabulous entertainment including national recording artist Drew Baldridge.
While sponsors and volunteers work hard on this great event, the main focus is to raise money for a worthy cause and this year it is Climb for PTSD that provides much needed mental health services to veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. In fact, 100 percent of online donations go directly to Climb for PTSD.
Although the Wingfest is a dedicated wing festival, there all kinds of food items ranging from pulled pork to chili dogs and more. Vendors will compete for Best Gourmet Wing, Best Buffalo Wing and Best Overall Wing. If cooking wings ain't your thing, perhaps eating them will be right up your alley: there are Men's, Women's and Teen Wing Eating Competitions on Saturday with cash prizes awarded. And don’t miss the Midwest Wingfest 5K on Saturday morning – visit the web site to register.
Their current program provides not only mental health services, but PTSD education for families of those suffering from PTSD, physical fitness and confidence building opportunities. Climb for PTSD’s name derives from monthly climbs outreach and awareness climbs, and symbolizes the lifting of the burden of PTSD from veterans’ shoulders to others and carrying them to a higher level of health.
This year, the kids' area will almost double in size, said Wingfest Found Doug Shoemaker. "And don't miss the Car Cruise from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday - the first 100 cars will receive a dash plaque."
Wingfest always has the best entertainment in the area, and this year they are welcoming Drew Baldridge and Mason Ramsey as the Friday night headlining acts.
Please consider donating online at www.midwestwingfest.com/donate. The Wingfest is located outside of St. Clair Square on the east parking lot nearest Dillard’s. For more information, visit www.midwestwingfest.com or email midwestwingfest@gmail.com.

Popular Festival Also Raises Much Needed Funds For Area Non-Profits
Hosted by the Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce, the annual Chili Cook-off has featured the culinary creations of individuals, local organizations and area businesses for 35 years now! What started with just a few vendors on one block of East Main Street in downtown Belleville has now grown to more than 60 vendors, and is one of the largest festivals in Belleville. Many people attend the Chili Cook-off to enjoy the great chili, entertainment and other festivities, but most don’t realize that it’s the biggest fund raiser of the year for many non-profit
organizations. Over half of the vendors participating at the Chili Cook-off each year are either a non-profit organization or a business raising money for a charity. 100% of the money spent at each booth goes to that vendor. In addition, attendees are invited to vote in the People’s Choice contest for their favorite chili with $1 per vote. 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Community Interfaith Food Pantry in Belleville.
