Stillwater Combines Sophisticated Living And Compassionate Care Embracing generations through listening hearts, compassionate care and purposeful activities modeled in Christ’s love.
Here are a few questions to ask when considering a move to assisted living:
M
aking the decision to transition into assisted living is a daunting task indeed, but the staff at Stillwater Senior Living is available to lend support and guidance throughout the experience and beyond. Most importantly, there is not a regimented schedule at Stillwater, but instead a personalized assistance plan for flexibility that causes a more seamless move into a new home. “Stillwater is the only locally owned and operated assisted living community in Edwardsville that was constructed to offer first-class accommodations,” said Chief Operating Officer David Read. “We feel that Stillwater is the best of the best.” At Stillwater, residents can receive as much or as little help and interaction as they need: As those needs change, so does their personalized plan. Communication between the resident’s team and their family is key as all come together in an extended family. Stillwater has 46 beautifully appointed apartments consisting of studio, and one- and two-bedroom suites. Designed with security features and maximum accessibility, all apartments include walk-out patios and a full range of amenities for the whole family. In fact, family and friends are invited to dine with their loved one in the top-notch dining room where all meals are prepared by an Executive Chef and served restaurant
style. In addition, there is a specially designed private gathering room for any occasion.
Services and Programs Include: Assisted Living: The professional, friendly staff will provide personal care assistance, supervise medications, clean apartments and provide meals. Recreational, social activities and apartment maintenance is also provided. For those who have their own cars, there is ample parking right out their front door as well as scheduled transportation for those who want to leave the driving to someone else. Concierge Services: Stillwater has a menu of amenities such as a full-service hair salon and spa on site. Pets are also welcome and the staff is happy to help with these furry friends as well. There is a Wellness Coordinator to accompany residents to doctor’s appointments if so desired and Stillwater’s team can even assist with personal shopping. But if seeing is believing, then all are invited to schedule a tour by calling (618) 692-2273. Stillwater is located at 1111 University Drive in Edwardsville; info@stillwaterseniorliving.com, www.stillwaterseniorliving.com. Photos on this page and the cover by Scott Evers Photography.
• Do you need more help than family and friends are able to provide? Are the activities of daily living becoming overwhelming? • Do you feel lonely or isolated at home? Having an active social life is vital to your health and happiness. The social aspect of assisted living is a huge benefit. Good communities offer a range of social and recreational activities. • Do you, or your children, worry for your safety? Perhaps your mobility is limited, making it difficult to get out of bed by yourself, for example. Maybe you’re afraid of what might happen if you fell and couldn’t get up, or experience another problem and couldn’t get help? • Are you tired of maintaining a home? There are a lot of responsibilities that come with living in your own home. Assisted living communities can provide a home-like atmosphere, without the work of cooking, cleaning, shopping for groceries, and doing laundry. • Is transportation an issue? Perhaps you’re having trouble driving or can no longer drive. If public transportation or another alternative isn’t easy and convenient, you may be increasingly housebound. Stillwater Senior Living offers scheduled transportation, so you can get where you need to go without having to rely on friends and family. • Are you eating nutritionally balanced meals or not? • Are your medications being monitored and are they being taken as prescribed?

Ron Hodgkins
Experience, Community Involvement Combine To Give BEL-O Pest A Well-Known Reputation
B
el-O Pest Solutions is a locally owned and operated professional pest control company that has helped hundreds of homeowners by solving pest problems common to the southwestern Illinois and eastern Missouri areas, including pests, insects, termites, rodents and wildlife. All technicians at BEL-O Pest are certified in Missouri and Illinois, and services are backed by a money-back guarantee.
“Sentricon for termites is an example of that advantage,” he said. “And the way we treat bed bugs – a growing problem by the way – is the most effective in the area: we use heat as well as liquid applications. Contrary to what some may think, every household, business, hotel, etc. is susceptible to bed bugs.” The company also has a very effective mole trapping procedure, among other wildlife types.
Ron Hodgkins, co-owner of BEL-O Pest, has a long-running career as an expert in this field beginning in the early 1980s when he worked for and eventually purchased C&D Pest Control. Working hard to grow the business he sold it in 2005, went to work for Rottler in St. Louis for a year and then joined forces with BEL-O of Belleville to co-own and operate the pest side of the business.
BEL-O Pest covers both Illinois and Missouri with primary focuses in Madison, St. Clair, Monroe, Randolph and Clinton counties in Illinois, and St. Louis City and County, and Jefferson County in Missouri. “We also receive referrals from our clients to other properties they might own in places like Vandalia, Mt. Vernon, Litchfield – mostly through property managers,” he said. This is no problem for the company to stretch far as they are one of the largest independent pest control companies in the area.
Obviously Hodgkins’ experience in the pest control business qualifies him as an expert, but he said, “Honestly, I have learned a lot from my mistakes and literally studied books and manuals on pests, and pest control.” “A key to my experience, though, is involvement in the state and national Pest Control Associations,” he continued. “I have been a board member on the Illinois Pest Control Association since 1987 and treasurer since 1995.” Such involvement has been a tremendous resource to BEL-O Pest as Hodgkins has had the opportunity to help write Illinois state law for pest control within the Illinois Structural Pest Control Act. This act governs all pest control within the state. In addition, because of these connections on the state and national levels, BEL-O is selected by manufacturers and suppliers to use the newest, most up-to-date products and treatments on the market today.
Raised in Belleville, Hodgkins believes in the importance of becoming involved in the community. “I really think that if you don’t support others in the community, you’re missing out – if you want to improve your life, you have to help others improve their lives,” he said. He has served on the board, including as president, of Big Brothers Big Sisters (see the ad in this issue for the annual house raffle entry form) and the Violence Prevention Center. Call BEL-O Pest Solutions at (618) 235-8778. Ask about the quarterly maintenance service plans that will keep your home pest free all year long! Photos by Gary Luttrell.

You have wanted to put the final touch on your home’s décor and tie it all together with coordinating window treatments, but you aren’t sure that you can justify the expense. Consider then, that the properly designed window treatment can not only add beauty and style to your home but also work to significantly reduce your home maintenance costs and heating/cooling bills over time. A well engineered plan to dress your windows in the right shutters, sheers or shades will increase your home’s energy efficiency throughout the year and protect your furniture and flooring investments from the permanent damage caused by direct sunlight. With approximately 44 percent of your utility bill attributed to heating and cooling, energy efficient window treatments can translate into measurable year-round savings. Many energy experts recommend adding more efficient window coverings rather than going to the expense of replacing the windows. Use of window treatments to control drafts and heat loss dates back hundreds of years to those heavy velvet puddled draperies found in the castles of Europe. Your local window treatment professional can introduce you to the most energy-efficient products available today. A product’s R-Value is a measurement of its ability to keep heat in and cold out. The higher the R-Value, the better that product is at retaining indoor warmth. A phenomenal product designed to increase R-Value is the Hunter Douglas Architella™ cellular shade. This product features an innovative twist that provides more depth of color at the window and an R-Value of 4.5 in addition to your current window system. Incredibly, this figure is more than three times greater than the R-Value provided by a common two-inch faux wood blind making it a better choice for long-term energy savings. Another elegant and time-tested solution for the reduction of heat loss at the window is the selection of classic shutter systems which offer an average R-Value of 3 and provide you with multiple options for privacy and light control. A product’s Summer U-Value is a measurement of its ability to reflect heat. For example, a window treatment that reduces incoming heat by 70 percent, has a summer U-Value of .30. The lower the U-Value, the more effective it is in reflecting heat away from your home. To reduce heat gain, select a low U-Value treatment with white or light colored backing and install it an inch or two from the glass to create an air pocket. Non-reflected heat that builds up in the pocket during the day will dissipate through the glass at night when the temperature outside cools. Not surprisingly, you will find that shutters and cellular shades can provide the low U-Values you need to lower your electric bill. Put your window treatments to work saving you money by employing them in the business of ultra-violet control and asset protection.

August is National Children’s Vision and Learning Month • frequent loss of place while reading • complains words move on the page • short attention span • smart in everything but school • labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic • working below potential Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist. A Developmental Vision Evaluation is needed to test all of the visual skills critical to reading and learning: eye movement control, focusing near to far, sustaining clear focus, eye teaming ability, depth perception, visual motor integration, visual memory and visual perceptual skills.
A
s children are headed back to school it’s time to take a moment to review how vision problems can interfere with a child’s ability to read and learn. One out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems: “60 percent of kids with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems,” according to a conservative estimate from the American Optometric Association.
According to Dr. Thomas Unger, of Troy, “The good news is that unlike other disabilities, the majority of vision based learning problems can be fixed.” For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 667-2020 or visit his web site at www.ungereyecare.com.
From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.
Too often parents assume that if a child passes a vision screening that everything is fine with their eyes, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Being able to see things clearly far away is no guarantee that a child can see things up close. In order to read, children not only have to see the letters clearly, but they have to be able to move their eyes easily from left to right (tracking) and be able to see for a long period of time. August is National Children’s Vision and Learning month to help bring attention to the critical role vision plays in a child’s education. Therefore it is vital that parents and educators know the signs that indicate that vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties: • headaches when reading • slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • avoidance of reading • poor reading comprehension
Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading? • Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD? • Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should? ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning
problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a
Developmental Vision Evaluation.

MEMORIAL BREAST HEALTH CENTER EARNS NATIONAL ACCREDITATION - Only NAPBC accredited center in the metro-east
M
emorial’s Breast Health Center of Excellence was granted a three-year/ full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Memorial’s Breast Health Center of Excellence is the only breast center accredited by the NAPBC in the Metro East and has earned the Center of Excellence designation from the American College of Radiology. In 2014, Memorial was the first hospital in the area to provide 3-D mammography (breast tomosynthesis). Today, Memorial provides 3-D mammography at its Breast Center in Belleville as well as its diagnostic facility in O’Fallon. Accreditation by the NAPBC is given only to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. During the survey process, the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for
treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. The standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement. A multi-disciplinary team of surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and breast health professionals worked together over a period of three years to achieve this accreditation. Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to: • Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services • A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options • Completion of a survivorship care plan on every patient, and • Quality breast care close to home. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.
As one of only 500 Accredited Breast Centers in the nation, Memorial Breast Health Center of Excellence offers: • Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services. • A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options. • Completion of a survivorship care plan on every patient. • Quality breast care close to home.
We are honored to bring you NAPBC-recognized care.

Do You Know The Top Five Dangers Impacting Your Business? By Teresa Pedigo
A
ll business owners have unique situations, but the majority of challenges faced are more common than you may think. The problems faced by business operators are shared across all industries regardless of size or niche.
Top Five Dangers: 1). Financial Mismanagement: Making money is the ultimate goal of any business. However, if you do not manage money properly, those funds can evaporate. One must understand where the money is going and why it’s going there. Solution: A deeper look into where your money is being spent can result in significant expense reduction or allocation toward more beneficial opportunities. AdviCoach offers in-depth strategies in financial management and operations support that can help you better navigate your business’ finances. 2). Ineffective Marketing: The products/ services you offer could be the best in the world, but if people are unaware of your business, no money is made. Solution: By segmenting your audience, you can more effectively reach the people who will become future customers. With AdviCoach’s help, your business can establish a marketing and public relations strategy specifically suited to your target audience. 3). Under-Performing Sales: Sales are the life-blood of any business. Underperforming sales people produce 50% less revenue than
top performers within the same company. Under-producing can contribute to a shriveling bottom line. Solution: Holding on to an under-performing employee can be toxic to your business’ health. AdviCoach offers performance enhancement sales training, as well as customizable management strategies that fit your business’ needs. 4). Lack of Human Capital: Sometimes the amount of jobs available may not match the amount of prospective employees. Every year, about one-third of the workforce in the United States changes jobs, making job recruitment and employee retention a major problem for small businesses. Depending on the size of your business the loss of even one person can be devastating, especially if you don’t have any back-ups in place. Solution: Let AdviCoach develop a plan to help your business stand out during the recruiting process. AdviCoach will also help your business develop both incentive and referral programs for increased employee retention. 5). Poor Leadership: Many of the above challenges can be traced back to one source – poor leadership. Solution: AdviCoach is proud to offer both executive/employee coaching to help you better understand your leadership role. AdviCoach will help coach you through the best practices for communicating with your staff as well as fostering growth among your team.
What We Offer:
AdviCoach Engagements Include: • Strategic Planning • Revenue and Profit Planning • Key Performance Indicators Systems • Tactical Marketing Plans • Unique Selling Proposition • Employee Management & Acquisition • Leadership Development Plan • Comprehensive Exit Strategy Additionally we offer Complementary Coaching Sessions so you can take business coaching for a “test drive.”

Although the Wingfest is a dedicated wing festival, there all kinds of food items ranging from pulled pork to chili dogs and more. Don’t miss the 5K Chicken Run on Saturday morning – visit the web site to register - when the best dressed chicken that crosses the finish line will be awarded $100!
The current Climb for PTSD program provides not only mental health services, but PTSD education for families of those suffering from PTSD, physical fitness and confidence building opportunities. Climb for PTSD’s name derives from monthly climbs outreach and awareness climbs, and symbolizes the lifting of the burden of PTSD from veterans’ shoulders to others and carrying them to a higher level of health.

Call For Help: Seeking Volunteers From The Community Helping People Build New Beginnings
D
id you know that Call For Help, Inc. has been assisting residents of the Metro East who are facing personal crisis for 45 years? Call For Help’s net is cast far and wide offering services for a myriad of problems including poverty, homelessness, hopelessness and violence. The latter lies within the Sexual Assault Victims Care unit that responds 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to victims of rape, incest, molestation, harassment or other sexual assault. Sadly, these victims range in age from 3 on up, female and male. Staff and volunteers from Call For Help are specially trained advocates who arrive at the hospital or police station within the hour to offer compassionate assistance to someone who has been a victim of sexual assault. They also help them navigate the medical and legal systems. In addition, Call For Help provides victims and their families counseling at no cost to help them overcome the trauma of sexual assault. Currently, Call For Help is seeking volunteers as the need for assistance in this area of service is greater than the staff can continue to handle themselves. While volunteering has a meaningful, positive impact on the community and the orga-
"I volunteer at Call for Help because I want to be an advocate for the voices that are many times pushed aside because of fear and stereotyping of survivors. I want to be that support when they feel like they are alone and at times intimidated by the medical side of reporting rape. I remember one call where I had to be the protector of my client when her mother wanted to attack her physically and verbally because of the shame her daughter was putting on their family. Having someone like a sexual assault volunteer in your (the client) corner when his or her world seems to be spinning out of control is the best feeling." – Monica
nization, research shows that donating time can have many benefits personally for the volunteer. There are many ways to lend a hand at Call For Help: community education and outreach; answering the phones at the 24-hour Sexual Assault Victims Care Unit; acting as an advocate by responding to calls from the police and/or hospital when needed; and more. An extensive 40-hour training course is provided for volunteers with ongoing training and support given throughout the year. Of course, monetary donations are extremely helpful during this time of financial crisis in the state of Illinois and a private web site is available at callforhelp.org to give either anonymously or otherwise. There is also a “Wish List” on the web site of things needed at the agency for the people under their care. For more information, please call (618) 397-0968 and visit www.callforhelp.org. The phone number for the Sexual Assault Victims Care Unit is (618) 397-0975.

Stop by and create a project or two, or three, or more to fill up your own gallery. There may even be an exhibiting artist sneaking in as a child to join in the fun.
The Children’s Gallery was designed to foster an interest in art at an early age. Children ages 3 to 11 enter the gallery and choose a piece of art, free from parental influence. After the child has selected a piece, they are encouraged to visit the artist who created their piece to find out how it was created. The cost to enter the gallery is $5. Plan to stop by the Gallery to let your little ones start their own art collection, or, add to it!
Kids can also participate with the group working on the Salute Chalk Walk. Artful expressions abound here where kids can create masterpieces of their own on the Chalk Walk or doodle boards. Kids tattoos, sand castles and bubble tubs are fun, too. Or, try making one of the many take-home projects from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
