That's where we come in!"

Martie has added a patio display complete with a fireplace and outdoor grill to use during their planned charity-minded special events throughout the year. The next event is their annual Spring Open House on April 21-23: a blood drive is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on that Saturday - every donor will received two tickets to a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game! "We gave tickets to 26 donors last year." To take full advantage of the outdoor grill, a local retired chef grills up food for all shoppers on the last Saturday of every month. Sometimes it's brats, wings and hot dogs, and sometimes Papa Murphy's of O'Fallon donates pizzas to be grilled "these days are really fun - and delicious!" said Martie. Technology also plays a large role at Creative Landscapes. With their gorgeous computer-image design programs, customers can walk into the consulting room and literally see their own home on a huge monitor with new landscaping around it. “They don’t have to visualize anything – it’s right there and we have the ability to move things around,” Martie said. The Garden Center offers a myriad of perennials and annuals including vegetables, herbs and heirloom plants, which have been “growing” more popular every season. “We also installed a greenhouse off of the main building so we have plants yearround,” Martie said. Some people revel in reds: sun-kissed tomato, inky burgundy, velvet crimson, spicy cayenne and earthy brick.

And you? What's your favorite color? Whether it's a primary hue like red or blue, or a single shade like butter yellow or lime green, chances are it pleases more than your eye. "Color has an amazing effect on people, much of it subliminal," said Kay Kendall, interior designer and owner of Kay Kendall Interior Design. "Some people walk into a room and immediately have a sense of emotional attachment. And most of that is the result of associations linked to childhood. Our homes should reflect who we are and how we like to feel. And color has an enormous effect on how we feel." But what if red or tangerine or lavender - is out? “Don't decorate because of a trend or use all soft, quiet colors because that's what you see in a magazine,” Kendall said. “Ultimately, you will be unhappy, because it's not who you are. Look at trends to see what's out there and to refresh what you have, to reflect your personality.”

The housing crisis, ongoing war and economic downturn have combined to shape Americans' color tastes. “We're searching for the color equivalent of mac and cheese: safe, traditional and comforting,” she said. “But the pops of bright colors, from crimson to acid yellow, suggest that we're ultimately hopeful about the future.” Neutrals are now, especially in larger purchases like cars, sofas or carpet. “For those big-ticket items, we'll make the safer choice such as neutrals, from rich gray to camel,” Kendall thinks. And, she continues, "We're using trendier colors, like acid green or amethyst, as accent pieces.” Also, green continues to gain strength from its association with the growing shift toward eco-consciousness. It will show up in everything from fabrics to accessories to countertops. VariegatedGreenery Gives The Garden Pizzazz

Velvety red roses, saucy daffodils, perfumed lilies, blushed apple blossoms - all have enticed novices into gardening over the years. But experienced gardeners quickly discover that foliage is much more than a foil for the flowers they love. It has beauty of its own, lasts well after flowers fade, and spices landscapes with texture and form. Today, as every nursery-goer knows, foliage is fashionable. Yes, there's every shade of green imaginable, including the recently popular chartreuse. But the newest stars boast variegated foliage, green leaves splashed, edged, dappled and striped with white, cream, yellow, rusty reds and combinations of all four. Flowers are sometimes bit players on these dazzling beauties that seem to sparkle in sun or shade. Encouraged by the success of newcomers like ornamental grasses and the renewed popularity of old favorites like coleus and pelargoniums, growers have eagerly looked for variegated "sports" or chance mutations in garden mainstays like iris, day lilies, citrus and the like. Their efforts to stabilize a chance variegation have paid off with a host of new "old favorites" now available in nurseries. What causes variegation? "It's an absence of chlorophyll," said Toby Mancini, a grower for Monrovia. "When the green of chlorophyll disappears, the real color of the leaf comes forward. That white or red you see was there all the time." Less chlorophyll, used by plants to make food, means variegated plants have to work harder for necessary nutrition, Mancini said. Generally that means they tend to need more and brighter light than their all-green counterparts. Otherwise they may revert to natural green leaves to survive. Here are some other garden classics with variegated forms. Check your local nursery for the plants that will work best in your area.

• White-edged Sage (Salvia officinalis WhiteEdged): A variegated form of the popular Salvia officinalis Berggarten, this upright, mounding sage has textured gray-green leaves bordered irregularly with soft white. Full sun. • Brise d'Anjou Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium caeruleum Brise d'Anjou): Striking ferny leaves meticulously outlined in white are topped by cool violet-blue flower spikes in summer. Partial-full shade. 2 feet tall and wide. • Summer Gold Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus africanus Hinag Summer Gold): Arching broad leaves boldly edged in yellow are strong competition for the tall blue-purple flower spikes this plant is prized for. Evergreen. Full sun. • Oriental Limelight Artemisia (Artemisia vulgaris Oriental Limelight): Tall growing and mounding hybrid has aromatic foliage splashed with lemon-yellow and cream. Full sun. • Variegata Hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla Variegata): Soft green leaves are dappled with creamy white and yellow-green on this old garden favorite. Pink lace-cap flowers are stunning, too. Sun to partshade. To 6 feet tall. Deciduous. • Variegated Pink Spotted Dead Nettle (Lamium maculatum Variegated Pink): Known for its spotted heartshaped leaves, this hybrid boasts silver and green foliage and lavender-pink flowers in spring. 8 inches high to 3 feet wide. Tolerates dry shade. • Marjorie Channon Pittosporum (Pittosporum tenuifolium Marjorie Channon): Dark stems are a vivid contrast to small silver green and white leaves on this hybrid shrub. MISSOURI BOTANICAL GARDEN ANNOUNCES 2017 SUMMER EXHIBIT  Garden of Glass: The Art of Craig Mitchell Smith Debuts Mother’s Day Weekend May 13

WHAT: Garden of Glass: The Art of Craig Mitchell Smith  WHEN: May 13 to August 13, 2017. Daytime hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Evening hours are 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights beginning June 1. Evening hours also offered Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-28). The majority of the exhibit will be housed in the Garden’s Climatron® with preview pieces on other parts of the grounds and one display at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. Evening events will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings June 1 to August 12 so that guests can see the exhibit with custom lighting. Evening events will feature food and beverage sales and live entertainment. The pieces are best seen at night, but will be on display during regular daytime hours at a reduced price. Tickets for evening events are available now.

he Missouri Botanical Garden will play host to floral glass artist Craig Mitchell Smith next summer during its Garden of Glass event. Smith’s pieces have previously been on exhibit at Walt Disney World’s Epcot Center, Michigan State University and various botanic gardens. His work has been featured on HGTV.

Smith’s pieces will be available for sale following the close of the show. Additional studio pieces will be available for sale in the shop located in Ridgway Visitors Center. A number of pieces for sale will be made with glass from the Garden’s greenhouses. When the greenhouses were renovated, the glass was saved, and a portion will be used for this exhibit.

Smith is known for his custom kiln fired technique and style. He uses fusing, texturing, slumping and cold working to create his pieces. This summer’s exhibit will feature 30 displays, all commissioned specifically for the Missouri Botanical Garden. It will be the world’s largest kiln fired glass exhibit to date.

The Missouri Botanical Garden is located at 4344 Shaw Blvd. in south St. Louis, accessible from Interstate 44 at the Vandeventer exit and from Interstate 64 at the Kingshighway North and South exit. Free parking is available on site and two blocks west at the corner of Shaw and Vandeventer.

“We continue to look for exhibits which will delight our visitors,” said Dr. Peter Wyse Jackson, president of the Missouri Botanical Garden. “Craig’s passions for gardening and floral glass make this a perfect fit for the Garden.”
