Siteman Cancer Center Opens At Memorial Hospital East

S

iteman Cancer Center, the region’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, has opened its doors to patients at Memorial Hospital East in Shiloh. Siteman Cancer Center is based at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and the new location is Siteman’s sixth in the region. Siteman Cancer Center at Memorial Hospital East, 1418 Cross St., provides oncology services as well as a pathway for patients to participate in clinical trials. Siteman offers 450 therapeutic trials evaluating innovative cancer therapies. By participating in a clinical trial, patients can gain access to investigational therapies that are not widely available to the public. With the new location, Siteman cements its commitment to central and southern Illinois, while providing access to the latest cancer care. “We look forward to welcoming patients to this new facility,” said Timothy J. Eberlein, MD, Siteman’s director and the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Distinguished Professor at the School of Medicine. “At Siteman, we’re committed to delivering outstanding cancer care to patients, in a comfortable and convenient setting. We believe strongly in a team approach to cancer care, and our Washington University physicians provide tremendous expertise and experience in treating all types of cancer, even those that are considered rare.” As an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Siteman is recognized internationally for its scientific leadership, resources, and breadth and depth of clinical and laboratory cancer research. At Memorial East, the cancer center occupies 39,000 square feet of a $38 million medical office building. Funding for the facility, which includes a diagnostic laboratory and pharmacy, came from BJC HealthCare, which owns and operates Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Memorial Hospital East. Clinical cancer care at Siteman’s Memorial Hospital East location is provided by Washington University Physicians in Illinois Inc. Siteman had been operating in Swansea on an interim basis since 2018. The new facility is five miles to the east. Medical oncologist William J. Popovic, MD, continues as medical director. Susan Laduzinsky, MD, a radiation oncologist, continues as director of radiation oncology. Other care providers are medical oncologists Alfred O. Greco, MD; Guillermo Rodriguez Jr., MD; John L. Visconti, DO; Nishant Poddar, MD, and nurse practitioner Alicia Carmack. In addition to Laduzinsky, the radiation oncology team includes Jason Lee, MD, PhD, and nurse practitioner Rhonda McCabe. The physicians are on the faculty at Washington University School of Medicine.

The facility is designed to be soothing and inviting. It features a healing garden and paintings by noted regional artists Steven & Cheryl Ward, Benjamin Lowder, Jessica Hitchcock, Samantha Bryant and Jeff Hirsch.

New technology available at Siteman at Memorial East includes: • A linear accelerator, a machine that creates high-energy radiation to treat cancer. • A computed tomography (CT) scanner, which combines multiple X-ray images so tumors and their positions in the body can be easily seen. Siteman’s location at Memorial East enables Illinois patients to receive advanced cancer care closer to home. If patients require highly specialized cancer care, such as bone marrow transplants or proton therapy, Siteman will help facilitate care at its main location in St. Louis. Aside from strengths in cancer care and research, Siteman is committed to lessening the burden of cancer on communities and the region. A team of Washington University epidemiologists and population health experts, for example, recently received a $7.6 million NCI grant to develop ways to implement proven cancer-control interventions among disadvantaged rural and urban populations in 82 counties in southern Illinois and Missouri. Siteman’s combined focus on cancer prevention, research and clinical care makes the cancer center a perfect fit for Memorial Hospital East and the region’s residents, said Mark J. Turner, past president of Memorial Regional Health Services Inc., which includes Memorial Hospital East and Memorial Hospital Belleville. “We are very excited to bring Siteman Cancer Center to the Memorial East campus,” he said. “Our collaboration provides world-class cancer care to residents throughout the region in a more convenient setting closer to home.” Turner, who retired after the Siteman facility opened, is succeeded by Michael McManus. Every year, more than 450 Washington University physicians treat 70,000 people at Siteman, including 12,000 newly diagnosed patients, making it one of the largest and most specialized cancer centers in the United States. “What a privilege it is to be in southern Illinois,” Eberlein said. “Siteman at Memorial East offers a welcoming, calming environment where patients will receive the most advanced cancer care. This includes access to state-of-the-art technology and to hundreds of clinical trials offering investigational cancer therapies, which are largely unavailable elsewhere in the region, except at other Siteman locations.” Registered nurses coordinate care at all Siteman facilities through the Patient Care Coordination Center. To make an appointment, call 800-600-3606 toll-free from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, or visit siteman.wustl.edu.

For Your Health: The Bottom Line On The Prevention Of Colon Cancer By Dr. Graham A. Colditz, Siteman Cancer Center

M

arch is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and while that may not be the first thing that pops to mind in this month of March Madness and the first days of spring, it’s worth paying attention to. Really.

to prepare for and then complete the test.

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer in men and women in the U.S. About 145,000 people are diagnosed each year, and a growing number are younger than 50. Yet, countering such sober statistics is the fact that colon cancer is also one of the most preventable cancers.

Ultimately, the best screening test is the one that gets done. On top of screening, healthy behaviors also can play an important role in lowering the risk of colon cancer, she added. These include keeping weight in check, not smoking, exercising regularly, eating more whole grains and limiting red meat, processed meat and alcohol.

The most important step to lower the risk? Getting screened. “It’s estimated that 75 percent of colon cancers could be prevented if everyone had the recommended screening tests,” said Dr. Jean Wang, professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Screening not only can catch colon cancer early, when it’s more treatable, it also can help prevent it in the first place – by finding and removing growths that could turn into cancer. Screening typically starts at ages 45 to 50. Some people at increased risk, including those with a family history of cancer, may start earlier and be screened more often. There are many effective screening tests available. Some are quick and easy, but need to be done more often, like the FIT stool test. And some are more involved, but need to be done less often, like colonoscopy. Which test a person chooses can depend on a number of different factors. These can include the cost, the distance to a screening facility and the amount of time needed

“The number of choices available for screening can sometimes be confusing, so definitely talk to your doctor about which one would be the best option for you,” Wang said.

It can feel like a bit of a laundry list, but as with many of the positive habits we try to work on, they don’t need to be tackled all at once. Start small and build on successes. Make a call to the doctor about screening. Skip the bacon on tomorrow’s sandwich. Go for a 10-minute walk at lunchtime. These single steps can make a real difference, laying the foundation for further positive changes. So, during this National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, celebrate good health by keeping this bottom line in mind: “Colon cancer is much more common than you think, but you can take simple steps to help prevent it, with screening being the most important,” Wang said. Dr. Graham A. Colditz, associate director of prevention and control at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, is an internationally recognized leader in cancer prevention. As an epidemiologist and public health expert, he has a long-standing interest in the preventable causes of chronic disease. Colditz has a medical degree from The University of Queensland and a master’s and doctoral degrees in public health from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Eye Doctor Helps Legally Blind To See

F

High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again

or many patients with macular degeneration and other vision-related conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last bastion of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions. Some patients consider Dr. Marianne McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specialize in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases. Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence to whom once had it. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver's vision test.

Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC Ophthalmology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disease, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors. Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel. "Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but more precise." To learn more about the bioptic telescopes or to schedule a consultation, give the office of Dr. Marianne McDaniel a call at (618) 566-8899 and visit www.mascoutaheyecare.com. The office is located at 100 East Main Street in Mascoutah.

FRUSTRATED WITH REPORT CARDS? • • • • • • •

Problems with tracking Poor comprehension and attention span Loses place while reading Points to words while reading Avoids close work such as reading Reverses letters or words in reading and writing Homework takes FOREVER when it shouldn’t

If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success.

W

hether your child works very hard and still gets a poor report card, or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help.

For more information on vision and learning, please call (618) 667-2020.

When a child complains that he can’t see the board, your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign to schedule an eye exam. Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently, it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an“auditory learner?” These are signs of a vision problem. The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious symptoms which indicates a child could have a vision problem, including:

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%

correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Don’t Get Scammed: Find A Qualified, Local Contractor

T

here are thousands of legitimate, ethical contractors in business around the country. Unfortunately, there are also scam artists looking to cheat homeowners out of their money. These “fly-by-night” operators often show up in communities impacted by natural disasters to try to scam distressed home owners into paying for shoddy repairs or work that they will never show up to perform.

Vastly underbids all other contractors. They may have the best price, but that doesn’t guarantee the best work. Such contractors may cut costs on quality, which can end up costing more when substandard work has to be redone.

Here are some warning signs to look out for:

Cannot provide customer references. Professional contractors should have current references they can provide from current and past clients — and those references should be available, not just an answering machine.

Doesn’t have license and insurance. All professional contractors should be insured and able to show their certificate proving such insurance. Although all states do not require licensing, contractors in states requiring licenses should have it and be able to provide a copy. Roofers in Illinois DO require licensing. Asks the homeowner to sign anything before being hired. If they ask for a signature on an “estimate” or “authorization” before making the decision to hire the contractor, look out. They may be trying to get an actual binding contract signed. Doesn’t write contracts. Professionals have clear contracts that outline the job, process, the cost, and helps clarify how problems will be managed. If there is no contract, there is no protection when something goes wrong. Don’t hire anyone who says a contract “won’t be necessary.” Requires cash or payment in full before starting the job. Shady contractors demand cash and then run with the money. Many home owners have been stranded by paying in full up front. A deposit toward materials is common, but only pay it once there is a signed contract by both parties. It’s also suspect if asked to pay cash to a salesperson instead of a check or money order to a company.

Offers “dramatically” lower pricing if you sign today.

Difficulty contacting the contractor. Professionals have a local, physical office, mailing address, phone and email. They should respond to queries in a timely manner. Make sure to verify the contractor’s local address. If they only have a P.O. Box, be wary. Building Permit requirements. Not all projects will require a permit, the contract with the professional contractor will state if a permit is required and who is responsible for obtaining the permit from the county, state or municipality office. The best bet is to do plenty of research. If the homeowner’s state requires contractors to be licensed, look them up on the state licensing website even if there’s a piece of paper that looks like a license. Make sure they don’t have a record of consumer complaints lodged with the local Better Business Bureau. Find the Home Builder’s and Remodelers Metro East Association at www.hbrmea.org or call 618-343-6331 for more information.

Give Them Nothing To Steal With IDSeal

L

ong-time Metro East businessman and resident Mark Bearth, offers an unparalleled depth of coverage for identify theft protection, monitoring and restoration through IDSeal. Whether his customers need only to protect one or an entire family, IDSeal has a plan to fit those needs. Identity theft has evolved over the years as devices became smarter and access to everything from personal documents to personal data became increasingly vulnerable. With that freedom, opportunities for hackers to strike becomes more of a risk. It also changed the very definition of the personal data that is necessary to protect.

Here are answers to two common ID-theft questions to demystify the changes: 1. What is identity theft? Identity theft is the unauthorized access to personal data for fraudulent use. An identity thief might pretend to be someone else to gain access to bank, credit, medical or benefit data. They use this data and the access that comes with it for their own gain or profit. Not only is identity theft a threat to the data immediately accessed, it also can lead to the access of additional accounts, credit or utility activation. Unchecked use of these fraudulently opened services can result not only in credit hits, but also debt collection action that the rightful owner of such data isn’t immediately aware. Identity thieves can also get a job, medical procedure or commit a crime under someone else’s name. Ultimately, the rightful owner of that name is the first to pay the price. It’s not easy, or cheap, to correct many cases of fraudulent identity use.

2. Do I need identity theft service? Once a luxury, ID-theft protection, monitoring and restoration has become essential. Cases of unauthorized use of credit cards are relatively easy to remedy with credit repair, as many credit card companies offer this service as part of a cardholder’s account services. Further, a credit card breach usually shows up on the cardholder’s next account statement, and the victim can appeal charges they didn’t authorize. However, it becomes trickier, for example, when a social security number, medical ID, driver's license or other personal information is involved. This is especially true when the information is stolen or bought from the dark web and the victim is a child; years can elapse without any suspicion of fraudulent activity. Most modern ID-theft services only cover monitoring of your social security number. IDSeal, however, offers credit and social security monitoring as well as social media protection for minors as part of its ID-theft plans; including a $1 million restoration guarantee. To get started protecting the ones you love, please call Mark Bearth, president of Bearth Communications, at (618) 767-6543 or visit www.IDSeal.info. In addition, a portion of every IDSeal subscription goes toward feeding starving children in North America. "Every time someone signs up for IDSeal, a child gets fed!"

The Importance of Microchipping Your

W

hile diligent pet owners make certain their precious furbabies have collars with ID tags, some don't realize that it's very common for their pet to get lost even with this protection. Even the strongest of collars can break or fall-off, thus the use of microchips is most important. According to studies, only one in five non-chipped, lost pets make it back home. A microchip is a permanent method of electronic identification. The chip itself is very small – about the size of a grain of rice – and is implanted subcutaneously (just under the skin) between the shoulder blades at the back of the pet's neck. Each chip has a unique number that is detected using a microchip scanner. While most common in cats and dogs, a wide variety of pets are eligible for microchipping. It is not unusual for pet owners to microchip reptiles, birds and horses.

Pet

A microchip can be implanted at most primary veterinary offices such as Lashley Animal Hospital. Once the microchip is in place, the veterinary office will provide the appropriate patient information to the registry. Some microchip companies charge a one-time registration fee while others charge an annual fee. "It is also important that if your phone number or point-of-contact changes, you inform the microchip registry immediately,” said Dr. David Lashley. "Up-to-date information will aid in your pet's safe return." While a microchip increases the odds of getting a pet back home, the use of a collar and ID tags are recommended as well. For more information, please call Lashley Animal Hospital at (618) 234-4584 and visit www.lashleyanimalhospital.com. The office is located at 3120 N. Illinois St. in Swansea.

Preferred By Pets, Trusted By Owners Microchip Your Pets!

In a recent study involving over 7,700 stray pets, the number of non-microchipped dogs that were safely returned to their owners was just under 22% - just 1 in 5. Make sure your furbaby has a better chance to return home should they get lost.
