YOUR LOCAL SHUTTER EXPERT

I

n the last 10 years, well-designed, energy-efficient products for the home, which offer a measurable value to our lives, have become most desirable by homeowners. The window treatment industry has moved forward to meet changing needs with more innovations and product improvements than can be mentioned in this article. However, the beautiful and classic interior plantation shutter system, in its many different forms, has proven to be a leader in its ability to meet these needs for design flexibility, increased function and value, increased energy efficiency, and reduced maintenance requirements. For those people that enjoy the flexibility of slatted win-

dow treatments, and their capacity to control the amount of light and privacy in their home with subtle adjustments of the louvers, please consider the following product comparisons that highlight the inherent value-driven features of a well-designed plantation shutter rather than simply comparing its cost relative to standard 2” blinds. Did you know that 50% of the energy loss in a home is occurring at the windows? High R-Values (the ability of a product to resist heat transfer) are desirable when designing an energy-efficient home. A modern, highquality double pane, Low E window with argon gas can

6 | Marketplace Magazine | Early Spring Issue 2018 | marketplacemagazineonline.com

provide a home with an R-Value of approximately 2.75 without window covering. The addition of a 2” blind with its approximate R-Value of 1.75 can result in a 60% increase in R-Value when closed whereas a well-measured, well-constructed, high-quality, plantation shutter system, with its approximate R-Value of 3.5, can result in a 125% increase in the R-Value of that same window. With regard to maintenance, shutters are infinitely easier to maintain than horizontal blinds because there are no cords and strings to clean around or replace when they break. With the high-quality shutter finishes available now, simple dusting or damp cloth cleaning will keep your shutters looking brand new when the cords on your blinds are starting to change color, and dust is collecting in those areas where it is difficult to clean. Additionally, shutters can be popped right off of their hinges to get them out of the way for window cleaning: No tools required and no brackets left in the way. Why throw away your front facing garage window treatment every three years when you can invest once and install solid vinyl shutters that you can easily hose down in the yard for the next 20 years? A blind can be lowered and open, lowered and closed or raised to stack off at the top 12” or so of your window. A plantation shutter can be opened up to lay against the wall and provide unobstructed view or left in front of the window with groups of louvers, as designed, opened or closed to provide different levels of privacy and light control. The most popular installation for “first time shutter clients” occurs in the bathroom. Here, the shutter can be designed to keep louvers above neck level open all of the time and those below shut for total privacy thus allowing preservation of the natural light often lost with blinds in exchange for privacy. A good shutter designer must have several styles of shutters available to meet the diverse needs of each homeowner and a strong understanding of the available material, framing and design options. Coordinating framing and sill options can elevate simple drywall openings into something worth highlighting for pennies on the dollar. Eye on Design offers no less than seven different shutter systems enabling them to meet their clients’ needs as closely and cost effectively as possible. For budgeting purposes on standard windows, consider costs ranging from $30 to $50 per square foot installed with or without framing. A well-designed shutter may be twice the price of a 2” blind, but it will reduce your energy costs by more than double; provide customized control of light and privacy; decrease maintenance needs; personalize interior design; and add re-sale value in ways that horizontal blinds simply cannot. Obviously Hodgkins’ experience in the pest control business qualifies him as an expert, but he said, “Honestly, I have learned a lot from my mistakes and literally studied many books and manuals on pests, and pest control. A key to my experience, too, is involvement in the state and national Pest Control Associations,” he continued. “I have been a board member on Illinois Pest Control Association since 1987 and treasurer since 1995.” Such involvement has been a tremendous resource to BEL-O Pest as Hodgkins has had the opportunity to help write Illinois state law for pest control within the Illinois Structural Pest Control Act. This act governs all pest control within the state.

A Seasoned Firm With Fresh Ideas!

In addition, because of these connections on the state and national levels, BEL-O is selected by manufacturers and suppliers to use the newest, most up-to-date products and treatments on the market today. “Sentricon for termites is an example of that advantage,” he said. “And the way we treat bed bugs – a growing problem by the way – is the most effective in the area: we use heat as well as liquid applications. Contrary to what some may think, every household, business, hotel, etc. is susceptible to bed bugs.” The company also has a very effective mole trapping procedure, among other wildlife types. Call BEL-O Pest Solutions at (618) 235-8778. Ask about quar terly maintenance ser vice plans that will keep your home and/or business pest free all year long.

FRUSTRATED WITH REPORT CARDS? • • • • • • •

Problems with tracking Poor comprehension and attention span Loses place while reading Points to words while reading Avoids close work such as reading Reverses letters or words in reading and writing Homework takes FOREVER when it shouldn’t

If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success.

W

hether your child works very hard and still gets a poor report card, or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help.

For more info on vision and learning, please call (618) 667-2020.

When a child complains that he can’t see the board, your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign to schedule an eye exam. Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently, it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an“auditory learner?” These are signs of a vision problem. The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork, it is vital you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious symptoms which indicates a child could have a vision problem, including:

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning

problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a

Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Support NFS With The Purchase Of A

100 Raffle Ticket To Win A 2018 Corvette $

The Corvette Charity Car Raffle began on July 31, 2017 and will end with a winner on July 31, 2018! Proceeds from this raffle will go directly to benefit the National Foundation for Syndactyly to help families touched by this birth defect and other hand-related abnormalities.

Despite the advances in modern medicine, little if any research funding is dedicated to Syndactyly largely because it is not a life threatening affliction. It is, however, a fairly common congenital defect that has no known preventative measures, and is only treated today by surgical intervention. Children afflicted by the birth defect must often undergo complicated and potentially, but not normally, life threatening surgery at very early ages to give the child a chance at full function when the condition is Syndactyly of the hand. Visit www.nfsus.org for more information about the National Foundation for Syndactyly.

Marion Medical Mission Seeks Volunteers For

A Trip Of A Lifetime: Because Water Is Life

F

ounded in 1985 by Jocelyn and Tom Logan of Marion, Ill., Marion Medical Mission (MMM) seeks to provide safe, clean, sustainable sources of drinking water to the extreme poor in Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia.

“As Marion Medical Mission has grown over the years, everything from the structure of the organization to the production of pump parts, to the number of wells installed every year, has become more efficient,” said Kimberly Richey, Director of Development. “In the first year, we built 13 wells, but now we build more than 2,500 wells every year.” Wells are just $400 in comparison to other organizations that are much more expensive plus 100% of that $400 goes toward the well." Currently, MMM is seeking volunteers for the 2018 “Shallow Well Teams” that will travel to Africa for three weeks in the fall. These teams will partner with African villagers and staff to build wells that will bring clean and safe water to over 362,000 people! Last Fall, Richey was one of those volunteers who spent three weeks building wells, meeting villagers and teaching them how to maintain the wells themselves. “Sustainability is key to the wells we build,” she said. “We don’t just show up, build a well and leave. This is really what makes Marion Medical different from other organizations: We work side-by-side with the villagers."

Did you know that one of every five kids in Malawi will die before their fifth birthday? "What we do is literally life changing - let’s say life SAVING,” she exclaimed. “The people are so very grateful for clean, safe water because they have absolutely nothing. In fact, someone said to me ‘we wish we could give you more, but all we have is love and joy.’ This trip has completely changed my life and has helped me see how Marion Medical Mission really makes a difference.” Volunteers come from all backgrounds and from all over the US to help MMM continue their work in Africa. While volunteers know the trip is a lot of hard work, they too can share a sense of purpose knowing they will make a difference for people who have so little. “I would say that you just need to feel comfortable being uncomfortable,” Richey laughed. “But the accommodations were just fine and the food plentiful.”

Deadline To Apply For The Trip Is March 31

If you are interested in applying to be a volunteer on one of MMM’s two teams this fall, please visit www.mmmwater.org for more information and to view the application. If you want to make a donation or have Richey speak to your church, school or other organization, please contact her through the web site. The photos on this page were taken by Kimberly Richey during her trip last fall 2017.

Dreaming Of A Romantic Destination Wedding Or Honeymoon?

D

estination weddings have become increasingly popular in the last 15 years as couples find plenty of wonderful advantages to combining the wedding and the honeymoon into an all-encompassing, dreamy week. To meet the demands of these weddings away from home, Julia Crunk, owner of Ambassador Travel, and her staff have become experts on arranging all the details for the couple and their guests; making the process much simpler and stress-free. Destination weddings have become a more economical choice for couples interested in sharing their day with a few select guests. Imagine saying “I do on a white-sand beach with a handful of your closest friends looking on. If a destination wedding sounds like your kind of paradise, Ambassador is the place to start. Ambassador Travel and Cruise is operating in a store-front office located in downtown Belleville since 1974. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and evening hours by appointment for honeymoons and destination weddings. Crunk and her staff - Karen Furlow, Toni Crunk and Rachael Chappell - work inside the store and have many independent contractors that work out of their home. Always looking to add to the staff, give Crunk a call if interested. A member of the staff will sit with the couple in the quiet of their office and discuss different ideas. "We recommend reserving as soon as possible," she said. "Then, we monitor your booking and if your price goes down, and you have purchased insurance, you get the lower rate." Ambassador also offers a no-fee payment plan so payments can be made up until the balance needs to be paid, thus making it more feasible to reserve early and lock in the air and resort you want! Discounts are also given to friends/families (minimum five rooms, 10 guests) who want to travel with the bride and groom to celebrate the wedding. With a wide variety of destination resorts available combined with over 44 years of experience, they personally know the resorts that offer free or discounted weddings, and the rules and regulations necessary for the perfect event.

All of Ambassador's agents travel to many destinations and learn about the best resorts and areas to send brides and grooms. Over the years, they have developed relationships with key personnel at these resorts. In fact, check out their list of expertise: Certified Sandals Specialist, AM Resorts (Secrets, Now, Dreams and Breathless) Master Agent, Riu Resort Specialist, Karisma Resort Gourmet Inclusive Honeymoon Specialist ( El Dorado and Azul resorts), Iberostar Specialist and a Disney Ear Marked Agency. They also win awards every year for outstanding sales with Apple and Funjet Vacations, and Master Cruise Specialists.

Honeymoon Registry

The honeymoon is always the first plan to make when getting married and with that comes the fun of registering at various businesses for gift giving. Think how fantastic it would be to register the honeymoon? Once honeymoon plans are finalized, Ambassador Travel offers an opportunity to register the honeymoon where friends and family can purchase honeymoon certificates as their gift! These certificates can be used to purchase tours, non-stop transfers, romantic dinners on the beach, spa treatments or just to help pay on the balance. "We are honeymoon specialists!" she said. Contact Ambassador Travel and Cruise at (618) 234-1046 or visit our website www.4ambassadortravel.com. Ambassador Travel and Cruise also provides the best in family vacations, adult-only resorts, all cruises, world-wide tours as well as small and large group trips. Remember, without the right travel agent, you are on your own.

2018 Paws For A Moment Pet Contest Benefits The Humane Society A Message From Max The Westie

H

i everyone! Many of you may remember me, but for those of you who haven't met me, let me introduce myself: My name is Max - I am a Westie and I work at Gary Luttrell Photography. Gary is my best friend: I greet most of our clients and even "photo bomb" if I can get away with it. Guess what? I am so excited because it's time for the Paws For A Moment Pet Contest. Max A few years ago, I had a great idea! A GREAT IDEA! Let us "Paws" for a moment, again, shall we? If you have a pet (dog or cat), do me a favor please. Ask them if they would like to have their portrait taken. I know they'll say "YES" - just watch how excited they get. I get to do it all the time and it's pretty cool being a celebrity. It's cold outside and kind of boring this time of year, so let's help my furry friends. Gary will photograph each pet and all the photographs will be on our web site and people get to vote for their favorite. There will be prizes and treats - Yay! - and for each photo session, Gary will make a donation to the Humane Society. The more pets that are photographed, the more money we will raise for our furry friends. Oh! I am so excited - I can't wait to see all my friends, old and new. This is going to be as much fun as a bowl full of bacon. Don't miss out - call right away: (618) 277-3686 (FOTO) or email Carol@garyluttrell.com.
