Bringing Living Back To Life

C

rescent Home Health is a leading skilled home healthcare agency with offices in Illinois and Missouri. Family owned and operated by Sikander Bajwa and his brother, Ameen, they work together with their skilled staff to act as the “eyes and ears” for the patient’s doctor. The philosophy of Crescent Home Health Agency is simple: “Bringing Living Back to Life.” Since opening the first office in Swansea in 2010, the sole focus of Crescent has been two-fold. First and foremost, Crescent is focused on improving the quality of life for their patients through the skilled staff. Secondly, they strive to improve the community through education and prevention. The basis of “home healthcare” is a wide range of services that can be provided in the home for an illness or injury. It is usually less expensive, more convenient and just as effective as care from a hospital or skilled nursing home. Following a referral for home healthcare services, Crescent’s professional staff will schedule an appointment to assess skilled needs and develop an individual plan of care for the patient. The staff then continues to stay in communication with the doctor. The agency accepts most insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid.

“We don’t want anyone to be afraid to call us because of a perceived cost,” said Natalie Huffman, RN and Illinois Clinical Director. “We want people to know they do have a VOICE and a CHOICE! Simply request Crescent Home Health." Services offered include: • Skilled Nursing (RN) • Physical Therapy (PT) • Occupational Therapy (OT) • Speech Therapy (ST) • Medical Social Worker (MSW) • Home Health Aide (HHA) Crescent’s dedication to the community provides educational presentations for local civic groups, nonprofit organizations, service groups and businesses. It is the mission of Crescent Home Health Agency to provide individuals with the information necessary to help reduce the risk of injury or illness, and lead a healthy, active life. Call the office to schedule a presentation. For more information, contact the agency: In Illinois (618) 277-0939 (#7 Park Place, Swansea); In Missouri (314) 741-3800 (763 South New Ballas Road, Suite 205, St. Louis). www.crescenthha.com.

Sikander Bajwa, Karen Shewmaker, Natalie Huffman

Crescent offers quality care in the comfort of the patient’s home: Karen Shewmaker, a retired caregiver, had a major heart attack that put her in the hospital, rehab and back home with another healthcare agency. That agency visited her a few times a week, but only asked if she had completed her exercises then left. Karen ended up back in the hospital and could hardly walk when she returned home for the second time. This time she specifically asked for Crescent and was seen by a physical therapist and a nurse three times a week. She loved them: The physical therapist did the exercises with her and even made a special exercise pillow for her. Crescent owner Sikander Bajwa did the admission and also visited Karen at the end to make sure she was ready to be released. Crescent worked with Karen for three months and it was all covered under Medicare, and she never saw a bill.

REPORT CARD FRUSTRATION?

W

hether your child works very hard and still gets a poor report card, or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help. When a child complains that he can’t see the board, your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign to schedule an eye exam.

• Problems with tracking • Poor comprehension and attention span • Loses place while reading • Points to words while reading • Avoids close work such as reading • Reverses letters or words in reading and writing • Homework takes FOREVER when it shouldn’t

If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success. For more information on vision and learning, please call (618) 667-2020.

Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently, it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an “auditory learner?” These are signs of a vision problem. The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious symptoms which indicates a child could have a vision problem, including:

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%

correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Find The Best Selection Of The Newest Wig Styles At Merle Norman Fairview Heights

D

uring Breast Cancer Awareness month, Merle Norman Cosmetics and Wigs in Fairview Heights would like to highlight their expertise in hair replacement needs. Employees have received extensive education in alternative hair from both Jon Renau and HairUWear, premier wig companies in the U.S. While there are over 100 wigs in stock to choose from, if they don't have what the customer is looking for, they will do their best to find it. Photos on this page are from the new collections of Jon Renau and HairUWear. Wigs are not just for those who have lost their hair to cancer treatment or other conditions. Plenty of people wear wigs, hairpieces or extensions just because they love the way they look. Today's wigs are so natural looking, so unlike the wigs of 20 years ago, that many women wear them simply for the convenience of instantly stylish hair. A wig is perfect for vacation, a big event such as a wedding or just to be different. Whatever the reason, Merle Norman has you covered. The professionals at Merle Norman have advice and tips for wearing, styling and caring for a new wig. In fact, wigs and other hairpieces may need alterations for a proper fit: Cutting and styling them specific to each unique face shape is very common. Wig stylists take the stress out of choosing the perfect piece to suit all needs and lifestyles. In addition, many customers are surprised to find such a wide assortment of integrative pieces like Hair Toppers, which offer solutions for those experiencing minimal to advanced stages of hair loss. They also carry lots of pretty turbans. “If you are experiencing hair loss, please know that you are not alone,” said Sabrina Fudge, owner of Merlen Norman-Fairview Heights. “We have helped many women just like you. Our collection of beautiful, natural-looking wigs and hairpieces are the preferred choice thanks to their exceptional comfort, quality and modern styling.” If hair loss includes eyebrows, the staff can take care of that, too, with the new Brow Sculpting Pencil. "When a woman is undergoing treatment for cancer, we pride ourselves in caring about them as a person, not just a patron," Fudge said. "We may cry, we may laugh, but when it's all said and done our customer leaves feeling satisfied knowing that she can carry on as usual, even without her own hair." The Merle Norman studio is truly a Family Affair. "I am a third generation Merle Girl and my daughter, Brooklynn, who manages our studio, is a fourth generation Merle Girl! Stop by for a free, personalized facial and consultation." Merle Norman Cosmetics is at 525 Lincoln Highway Suite #6 in Fairview Heights; (618) 624-FACE (3223).

Is A "Life Plan Community at the Shrine"

he Apartment Community is not under new ownership or management. They have simply changed the name to more closely reflect 1. Who they are - The Esquiline; 2. What they are - A Life Plan Community; and 3. Where they are: at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. When The Apartment Community first began, it truly was an apartment community. In other words, that was initially the only service offered. However, the community has since grown to include a full continuum of care. It’s now a Life Plan Community, meaning residents can enjoy not only independent apartment living, but also assisted living and skilled nursing services under one roof should they ever need it. Thus, to better express what we do and who we are, the decision was made to change the name of the community. The story behind the name: In ancient Rome, Mary had a dream that a church would be built in her honor on a site covered with snow. She shared her dream with a Roman couple, who then shared it with others. Remarkably, one hot August morning, snow fell on Esquiline Hill, one of the seven celebrated hills of Rome. All of Rome proclaimed the summer snow a miracle, and a church was built on the hill to honor Mary. The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows celebrates this story and their setting atop a hill on its stunning grounds makes “The Esquiline” the perfect name for the community.

6 Reasons To Get A Canine Companion When You Hit 50 Lashley Animal Hospital And Studies In "The Journal of Physical Activity And Health" Discuss The Benefits Of A Pet

I

f your nest is empty - by circumstance or by choice - think about getting a dog. Known for their devotion and happy dances, dogs can take a big bite out of isolation. Just hanging out with a furry friend has a revitalizing effect. Here are six benefits of later-life dog ownership.

Dogs Keep You Fit

Adopt a dog and ditch that pricey personal trainer. One particular study in the journal, published in 2009, found that dog owners walk approximately one hour longer per day than those without a fetching friend in their lives.

Dogs Make You Healthier

Another journal study published in 2016 also showed that dog-owning seniors have lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol than their pet-less peers. Having a dog also reduces the risk of heart attack - and boosts your chances of long-term survival if you have one.

Dogs Are Social Mediums

A natural-born icebreaker, your dog will introduce you to everyone from next-door neighbors to perfect strangers. It’s impossible to pass a dog without making a “pat stop,” so head for the park — Bowser will take it from there.

They Organize Your Day

In the same way a canine friend can help an introvert, a dog may keep one sane, showered and solvent. Because a dog owner knows he/she must feed and walk a dog at certain times, they are more organized during the day. Makes sense: Dogs, like humans, thrive on structure; they need to be fed, walked and nurtured at regular intervals.

Dogs Get You

MRI scanners showed that the canine brain reacts to voices and sounds, such as crying or laughter, in the same way the human brain does. Dogs are also the only non-human animals who scan the left side of a face - the process whereby people, too, “read” emotions.

They Boost Quality of Life

For many older Americans, a dog means the difference between a life lived and a life merely endured. Dogs help you stay safe and independent: They provide ears for the deaf, eyes for the blind and an early warning system at the approach of dangers (both real and imagined, of course!). “I’m staying in the new Crystal Suites!”

The St. Paul’s Home Board of Directors carefully examined how to best care for senior citizens today and in the future. After reviewing the results from a capital asset evaluation study and a market feasibility study, the board determined that it was cost prohibitive to renovate the old building, therefore plans moved forward to construct the new facility in its same location where it has been for nine decades. “I have always personally valued the care and service at St. Paul’s Senior Community,” said Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert. “I cannot thank enough the experienced and devoted staff, and those who have provided their time and efforts to St. Paul’s. Without such hard work, we may not have had the chance to add the new, up-to-date facility in our area. Keeping St. Paul’s Senior Community in Belleville not only keeps our elderly close to home, but it assures families that their loved ones are in good hands.”

St. Paul’s F

Is Offering A FREE Month's Rent In The Independent Apartments*

This state-of-the-art facility has a skilled nursing section with short- and long-term rehab rooms, a memory care unit and sheltered care (assisted living). Private and companion rooms are available as well.

or 90 years, St. Paul’s Senior Community has been a leader in the field of caring for the aged in Southern Illinois and has provided one of the most reputable nursing homes and apartment communities in the country.

A key feature of the new facility is its division into six “neighborhoods.” Each neighborhood includes a kitchen and dining room, and a living room area, much like the homes to which residents are accustomed.

Opening its doors for the first time in 1926 with 13 residents, St. Paul’s has grown exponentially over the ensuing decades and as the need for more space and services continued, the community has always been there to lend a hand. Though the history of the facility is associated with the ministry of the church bearing the same name, St. Paul’s Senior Community is its own entity and serves the greater Belleville ecumenical community welcoming residents of any faith. Today, St. Paul’s Senior Community is the only faith-based, not-for-profit personcentered-care retirement community in the area that serves Medicare and Medicaid residents.

The neighborhood concept is a new approach among nursing homes designed to foster a more home-like, resident-focused environment that encourages spontaneity and close relationships between staff and other residents. This concept also gives residents more choices and control over their lives. *For more information, please call (618) 233-2095 or visit www.stpaulshome. com. The Senior Community is located at 1021 West E Street, Belleville.

Americans Over The Age Of 40 intraocular lens. Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective surgeries with a success rate of 95 percent.

So, when is cataract surgery necessary?

Cataract surgery is necessary when the following are impacted: • Job Performance • Driving Ability • Reading and Watching Television • Level of Independence When vision has decreased to the point where it’s no longer to easily and safely perform daily activities, then it is time to consider cataract surgery.

C

ataracts can affect anyone! Although most people do not show symptoms of cataracts until at least the age of 40, cataracts can also affect young adults or even children. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the United States and the leading cause of blindness in the world. There are 24 million Americans over the age of 40 who are affected by cataracts. So knowing the symptoms and monitoring their effects on day-to-day life are important – see the ad below. Cataracts generally progress very slowly and surgery may not be needed for many years. In some cases, periodically changing eyeglasses or a contact lens prescription may continue to provide good vision. There is no way to prevent cataract development. Currently the only way to treat cataracts is to surgically remove the natural lens of the eye and replace it with an

“The most important thing to remember is whether you are experiencing any visual symptoms or have no symptoms at all, an eye evaluation is the only way to determine whether you have a start of an eye disease that may result in permanent vision loss if not detected and treated timely,” said Dr. Tom Unger. Your Eye Doctor can assist in making that decision. Doctor’s Tom and Alice Unger, Optometrists in Troy, can professionally advise their patients after performing a comprehensive eye examination. If, at that time, cataract surgery is determined to be necessary, they can consult and refer to an ophthalmologist for surgery. Then the patient will return to them for follow up eye care after surgery. Don't delay! Schedule an eye exam today before the year’s end. If cataracts are interfering with your independence and daily activities, it may be time to have cataracts removed and use any insurance benefits you may have. Call Unger Eye Care 618-667-2020 or visit ungereyecare.com.

In general, the cost of college has quadrupled in the last 20 years and is increasing 7% to 8% every year. Unfortunately, the process is fraught with costly mistakes. As we say, “It is a process like any other. If you don’t know the rules, you can easily lose!” Planning early is vital - even as early as birth - but we focus on high school freshmen through junior years, although seniors are welcome. Please RSVP at www.universityfinancialsolutions.com. At the end of the workshop, you will have the opportunity for a Free Consultation.

Essential Services Used Every Day Can

Help Feed North American Children

L

ong-time Metro East businessman and resident Mark Bearth, offers essential services through ACN, Inc., as an independent business owner. These are essential services that people are already using and spending money on every day, including home phone service, cellular service, natural gas and electricity, merchant services, high-speed Internet, Satellite TV, Home Security and Automation, and more. His most popular service is Flash Wireless, which is a “mobile virtual network operator” using your choice of either the Sprint or Verizon networks. Flash Wireless offers single line plans with unlimited talk, text and data. There are also family plans available. “The best option is to refer five friends or family members, and your service can be FREE!” he said. Established in 1993 by four businessmen, ACN not only seeks to provide essential services at affordable prices to consumers, but also to help the communities in which they operate. Thus, ACN supports a long and ever-growing list of organizations on a global scale, with efforts concentrated on those directly impacting children. One project in particular is Project Feeding Kids, partners with Feeding America, which works with local food pantries.

Childhood hunger is an epidemic. There are approximately 17 million children in North America that do not know where their next meal is coming from and it is happening right here at home, right in our own backyards. Therefore, by purchasing essential services through “Mark & ACN,” and paying the bill each month, customers are not only getting great services at an outstanding value, they are helping to feed families and children in need. In the United States, ACN guarantees a minimum annual donation of 1.5 million

meals to Feeding America toward helping families and children in need. Just $1 helps provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks.

As Bearth puts it: “Every time someone signs up for a service through ‘Mark & ACN,’ A Child Gets Fed. And, every time a customer pays their monthly bill for those services, Another Child Gets Fed.” ACN began as a reseller of long distance services in the United States, but over time has grown to offer all types of essential services customers in 26 countries use on a daily basis. ACN is the world’s largest direct seller of telecommunications, energy and essential services for home and business, but more importantly, they’ve provided a vehicle for countless individuals to change their lives. With Bearth Communications, Marketplace readers can discover their own career with ACN to earn residual income. In addition, Bearth is happy to help with fund raising through his ACN business for various organizations in the community. Contact him at (618) 670-3529 to schedule an appointment.

Custom Concrete Countertops Are

Polished concrete is an affordable, durable and good looking option

C

oncrete’s immense adaptability allows the expression of personal style through the use of color, texture and design of concrete countertops. With over two decades of experience in concrete design and development, Bricks-n-Stones' precast molding and finishing techniques ensure a tightly controlled, consistently rendered outcome. The look of concrete countertops is distinctive. The details in the material are organic and unique to concrete. Every countertop made is literally a hand-made original. Whether the customer finds exactly what they want in the countertop gallery or simply would like to collaborate on a new idea, Bricks-n-Stones will work with them to achieve their goal. Concrete countertops – make them yours! Polished Concrete: Now it's possible to take existing plain-Jane concrete from drab to fab with the increasingly popular technique of polished concrete: a process that enhances the natural beauty of existing concrete by hardening and polishing the concrete. The benefits of natural concrete are durability and aesthetic value. Polishing results in a smooth, sealed appearance. “We can take an ordinary concrete surface and turn it into a beautiful work of art that will complement the interior of your home or business in as little as a day,” said Keith Griffith, owner of Bricks-n-Stones. “The real challenge is choosing from among the many color options that are available.” People typically compare polished concrete’s cost and its appearance to other materials. It is important to note that polished concrete is a viable, economical and long-lasting flooring option. The smoothing and exposing of the aggregate in the concrete, followed by a polishing, provides a design that has a natural stone appeal and appears expensive, and elegant.

When choosing polished concrete, it is important to understand that polishing can expose some of the concrete’s imperfections. Polishing can produce rustic-looking results and imperfections will show. The floor has to fit the character of the space. Some of these imperfections may include cracks already existing in the floor. These flaws or blemishes can be improved, and beautified to harmonize with the final product. This is known as an organic look, where one sees the natural qualities of the concrete. Also, other areas of unevenness of veined aggregate may be visible. This is one of the most appealing characteristics for those who want a natural, yet functional, look. One benefit of polished concrete is lower maintenance cost. In high traffic areas, such as schools, hallways and corridors, polished concrete holds up better and lasts longer than traditional floor covering systems. Not only are polished concrete floors easy to maintain with an occasional sweeping and damp mopping, they also have a higher slip resistance when compared to ordinary concrete. In fact, polished concrete often exceeds OSHA standards for floors. Polished concrete is a dense surface that resists staining from oils or liquids, and has a longer lifespan than vinyl composite tile (VCT) or upgraded stone tile. With proper maintenance, there is no reason why polished concrete wouldn’t last a lifetime! Not to mention, the downtime required for the polishing process is minimal, allowing service or traffic on the surface to begin almost immediately. For more information about polished concrete and or concrete countertops, call Keith Griffith at Bricks-n-Stones at (618) 363-0829; www.creativeconcretepros.com.

New Pastor And Wife At St. Matthew UMC Are A Match Made In Heaven

G

ina and Bob Swickard are a remarkable duo that has moved to Belleville and into the hearts of the St. Matthew congregation with their exuberant personalities and easy-going style. Known for their excellent music ministry, St. Matthew was fortunate to have the Swickards appointed to the church because both Gina and Bob have musical backgrounds that they have used in their own ministries over the years. “We met while we were attending Eastern Illinois University in the school of music and walked down the aisle just 10 months later before finishing school,” Gina Swickard said with a smile. Gina then went on to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in music education and received her master’s degree from University of Illinois in Springfield in educational leadership. She has enjoyed singing with an opera company, teaching private voice lessons, directing musicals, choirs and dinner theaters. Bob graduated from EIU with a degree in music theory and composition following four years with the Navy. He then earned his doctorate of ministry and together began their journey together with hearts “for missions, the joy of music, a commitment to the Scriptures, a love for people and most passionately, a desire to share the gospel in such

a way that people get it,” he said. “I know what life was like before Jesus, and I know what life is like with Jesus. There is no comparison.” Both agree their finest accomplishments are their terrific four children. Elyssa, 27, teaches private voice and piano as well as directs children’s choirs. She is married to Chase Carlisle who is the worship leader at Springfield First UMC in Springfield, Ill. They have the Swickard’s two grandchildren, Emerson and Alistair. Son Joshua, 26, is an actor in Los Angeles. Kalia, 23, is married to Bryce Mast and they are both working in a Methodist church in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Elayna, 19, is currently attending North Park University in Chicago as a bio pre-med major. All four kids have their parent’s love and talent for music, and enjoy playing instruments and singing together as much as time allows. The Swickards and the staff of St. Matthew invite all to join them at one of many services on Sundays: 8 a.m traditional; 9:17 a.m. contemporary; 10:45 a.m. blended; 6 p.m. Cornerstone Deaf Church; and 6:30 p.m. Bible Study. Please visit the web site to learn more about the church and their ministries. St. Matthew is located at 1200 Moreland Dr. in Belleville, (618) 397-5994, www.stmatthewumc.org.
