Mueller Furniture Celebrates 90 Years In Business

M

ueller Furniture has been an anchor in the community at 1004 East Main Street in Belleville for 90 years. Now owned and operated by the third and fourth generations, the store is enjoying its best years in history with the expansion of a revitalized Main Street, the growing surrounding communities and the recent expansion of the store. Plus, Mueller has just stretched across the river to a brand new, satellite store in Lake Saint Louis. “Yes we have a new location now, but our home base is Belleville where we have appreciated the community’s support since 1927,” said Mark Mueller, general manager. While longevity is certainly important, Mueller and his father, Lynwood Mueller, president, believe the things that differentiate their store from others are their true keys to success: high-quality American-made furniture, excellent customer service, personal business relationships and competitive pricing. As a family-owned business, it is important to the Muellers to work with family-owned furniture suppliers around the country. “We think about our business in terms of relationships rather than transactions,”Mark Mueller said. "We encourage our customers to use us as their personal resource for anything furniture and mattress related." “The furniture industry is interesting because there is no bottom to how cheap the product can be,” he continued. “But at the lowest price, the value is horrible. The bad taste left behind by poor quality outlasts the sweet taste of a low price.” Mueller customers understand this concept. “Our prices are competitive and a customer is not going to get bombarded by five salespeople when they walk in – we have a welltrained staff with great overall knowledge of anything furniture or mattress related."

In recent years, the offerings at Mueller have gravitated toward Amish and Mennonite American-made companies because “they have a higher quality and provide more customization choices rather than brands like Broyhill and Thomasville that mass produce every piece leaving the customer with no choices,” he said. Customization allows the customer to match or complement other pieces or features in their home without completely replacing everything. “For example, if you love your dining room table but need new chairs – we can do that no problem.” Of course leather is still very popular – “it’s much more popular than ever,” Mueller said. “In 2004 we had four leather groups – now we have 40!” Mueller carries the only American-made leather furniture brand - Bradington Young - from Hickory, NC. “If cared for properly, you can expect top-grain leather to last 10 to 15 years or longer.” An interesting point to make about buying American-made furniture is the lowcarbon footprint it leaves. "The Amish furniture craftsmen only use solid cherry, oak, maple, hickory or elm wood that is grown in the Northern United States. They build the furniture, finish it and ship directly to us. It's a much smaller carbon footprint than imported furniture produced in factories without environmental regulations." Visit the anchor store at 1004 East Main Street in Belleville, (618) 233-0667 and the Lake Saint Louis store at 9 Fountain Grass Drive, (636) 234-3361; www.MuellerFurniture.com.

McCullough’s Flooring Showcases The Most Fashionable, Family-Friendly Products On The Market Today

Do you have the flooring blues?

Want to spruce up your space with a fresh new floor? The new options on the market today are absolutely stunning. How does this sound: waterproof, extreme scratch resistance, pet proof, kid proof, beautiful, durable, LOW maintenance? Sounds pretty good doesn’t it? Well that is the new direction of familyfriendly flooring. There are some amazing new products out there that are tough enough to withstand whatever life throws at it. At McCullough’s Flooring – now in business for 26 years - “Our current favorite product is Mannington’s latest and greatest, AduraMax,” said owner Tracy McCullough. “This is a luxury vinyl plank flooring. Don’t let the usual image of vinyl ruin this picture. This isn’t your grandma’s floor … this is the fashionable, functional, new wave of vinyl. It installs in individual planks to give the look of hardwood without the worry.” Does the bathroom offer a place to relax and rejuvenate? Does it provide the feeling of being a million miles away from the stress of everyday life? If not, it’s time for a bathroom facelift. McCullough’s can assist in designing a custom-tiled shower with stain free grout and beautiful features such as built-in shelves, stunning accent strips and large-format tiles; All for a completed project to be proud of and escape to for many years to come.

As always, McCullough’s promise is a beautiful, professional, lasting floor. From the moment of entry into the beautiful showroom, the goal is to “floor” customers with an extensive selection, knowledge, limitless designs, and installations of all things flooring. If McCullough’s knows one thing, it’s that flooring can be overwhelming because there are so many great innovative products and designs on the market. The staff will take all of the guesswork out of the process. At McCullough’s, there is an experienced sales team with over 200 years of combined flooring knowledge on whom to rely. After the perfect project is created together, the top-notch installation teams will make the final impression. “We do not sub contract any of our work,” McCullough said. “Our installers are fully trained on all of the latest installation methods. We simply will never sacrifice a job well done to be faster, less expensive or sub-par in any way. The quality we provide is impeccable and everyone from your sales representative, to the warehouse crew, to the installers will impress you.” McCullough’s invites customers to look at their projects and idea books on Houzz, Facebook and the range of products on www.mcculloughsflooring. com. You have wanted to put the final touch on your home’s décor and tie it all together with coordinating window treatments, but you aren’t sure that you can justify the expense. Consider then, that the properly designed window treatment can not only add beauty and style to your home but also work to significantly reduce your home maintenance costs over time. A well engineered plan to dress your windows in the right shutters, silks, sheers or shades will increase your home’s energy efficiency throughout the year and protect your furniture and flooring investments from the permanent damage caused by direct sunlight.

Window Treatments with

beauty and brains.

Lower your energy bills and protect your home furnishings with style.

With approximately 44 percent of your utility bill attributed to heating and cooling, energy efficient window treatments can translate into measurable year-round savings. Many energy experts recommend adding more efficient window coverings rather than going to the expense of replacing the windows. Use of window treatments to control drafts and heat loss dates back hundreds of years to those heavy velvet puddled draperies found in the castles of Europe. An Eye on Design window professional can introduce you to the most energy-efficient products available today. A product’s R-Value is a measurement of its ability to prevent the transfer of heat into or out of your home. The higher the R-Value, the better that product is preventing heat gain or loss. A phenomenal product designed to increase R-Value is the Hunter Douglas Architella™ cellular shade. This product features an innovative twist that provides more depth of color at the window and an R-Value of 4.5 in addition to your current window system. Incredibly, this figure is more than 3 times greater than the R-Value provided by a common 2” faux wood blind making it a better choice for long-term energy savings. Another elegant and time-tested solution for the reduction of heat loss at the window is the selection of classic shutter systems which offer an R-Value of 3 and provide you with multiple levels of privacy and light control. A product’s Summer U-Value is a measurement of its ability to reflect heat. For example, a window treatment that reduces incoming heat by 70 percent, has a summer U-Value of .30. The lower the U-Value, the more effective it is in reflecting heat away from your home. To reduce heat gain, select a low U-Value treatment with white or light colored backing and install it an inch or two from the glass to create an air pocket. Non-reflected heat that builds up in the pocket during the day will dissipate through the glass at night when the temperature outside cools. Not surprisingly, you will find that shutters and cellular shades can provide the low U-Values you need to lower your electric bill. Put your window treatments to work saving you money by employing them in the business

of ultra-violet control and asset protection. Ultraviolet light entering your home as sunlight will quickly fade, weaken and destroy your furniture, flooring, upholstery and artwork. Modern sheers are multi-talented in that they can reduce this incoming ultra-violet light by 65% or more while reducing glare, preserving outdoor visibility, adding beauty, and providing you with daytime privacy.

If you would like to justify the expense of custom window treatments in your home, work with an experienced window treatment professional to select hard-working window treatments that can meet all of your design requirements. You shouldn’t be afraid to invest in window treatments that look magnificent in your home if they are designed to reduce your home maintenance costs.

Hunter Douglas has revolutionized the use of sheers by integrating them into beautiful horizontal and vertical products such as the versatile cordless Duolite® shade and the popular Silhouette® and Luminette® shades designed to block 88% of incoming UV rays.

Jennaver Brown is the owner of Eye on Design and a certified Window Treatment Consultant as recognized by the Window Coverings Association of America. Schedule your complimentary in home consultation with her or JIll Geoppo, Interior Designer, to design your Custom Drapery and Bedding now.

An ever increasing variety of stunning sheer fabrics are now available on the market with affordable price points for custom made products. Flair 21 offers a clever method of adding sheers to your existing vertical blinds. The Ado-Wrap® allows you to dress up your existing vertical blinds in a beautiful custom sheer thus providing you with the benefits of a sheer during the day and a vertical blind at night.

Visit our 1750 sqare foot window fashions showroom featuring a beautiful Hunter Douglas Gallery™ at 309 E. Main Street in downtown Belleville to see our products first hand. Or call us at 618.257.9750 and we will come to you to get your home ready for the holidays.

Fall Pool Installations Make The Most Sense

M

cClure-Davison Pools has quickly become one of the top Metro East choices for custom fiberglass pools. Started in 2008, each pool that is installed is designed by both the homeowner and the builder to ensure that it fits the lifestyle of the client’s family. Here are a few reasons that a fall pool installation makes a lot of sense: Be ready to swim as soon as the temperatures rise. In order to avoid losing precious summer pool fun, building a back-yard pool in the fall may be the way to go. McClure-Davison can have the pool built and ready to swim this fall; close it down; and then it’s all set to open at the first rise in temps next year. Easier and faster installation. Pool installation requires a dry construction site. After the snow melts, the ground stays pretty wet for a long time. In this area, unexpected spring showers are very common and before crews can proceed, the soil needs to dry out so only minimal moisture remains. The ground must also be hard enough for heavy machinery to drive over it. When installing a pool in the fall, a random shower has minimal effect on the seasonally dry ground.

typically at the beginning of the new season. Also, if the customer needs financing to build the pool, interest rates may increase, too. Taxes. It is often overlooked, but as the end of the year approaches, remember that the pool is not only a major purchase, but also is considered a home improvement, which can be claimed on one’s taxes. Imagine opening the pool in the spring and getting a nice tax refund within weeks of each other. Call Tara and Russ Davison at (618) 589-6110 to schedule your free site evaluation and visit www.mcclurepools.com or facebook.com/McClureDavison Pools. The company is accredited by the Better Business Bureau.

More protection for your yard. Since the pool installation requires access for machinery and equipment through your yard, the drier ground of fall means there is less yard repair – saving work, time and money! Potential cost increase. As with everything else, inflation may play a big role in a purchase of a new pool. There is always a chance that pool and equipment manufacturers as well as skilled labor will increase their price,

• frequent loss of place while reading • complains words move on the page • short attention span • smart in everything but school • labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic • working below potential Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist. A Developmental Vision Evaluation is needed to test all of the visual skills critical to reading and learning: eye movement control, focusing near to far, sustaining clear focus, eye teaming ability, depth perception, visual motor integration, visual memory and visual perceptual skills.

A

s children are headed back to school it’s time to take a moment to review how vision problems can interfere with a child’s ability to read and learn. One out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems: “60 percent of kids with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems,” according to a conservative estimate from the American Optometric Association. Too often parents assume that if a child passes a vision screening that everything is fine with their eyes, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Being able to see things clearly far away is no guarantee that a child can see things up close. In order to read, children not only have to see the letters clearly, but they have to be able to move their eyes easily from left to right (tracking) and be able to see for a long period of time. August is National Children’s Vision and Learning month to help bring attention to the critical role vision plays in a child’s education. Therefore it is vital that parents and educators know the signs that indicate that vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties: • headaches when reading • slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • avoidance of reading • poor reading comprehension

According to Dr. Thomas Unger, of Troy, “The good news is that unlike other disabilities, the majority of vision based learning problems can be fixed.” For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 667-2020 or visit his web site at www.ungereyecare.com.

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning

problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a

Developmental Vision Evaluation.

School Clothing And Uniforms Available At The Shelter Shop There are many schools – private and public - utilizing a dress code for both elementary and high school students, and uniforms can become costly for some. But at The Shelter Shop in Belleville, customers can put together terrific outfits for an extremely affordable price. “There are racks and racks of items for kids who need uniforms – all pieces are just $1.25,” said Ellen Cugier, director of the shop. The Shelter Shop is a resale shop that sells donated, preowned items in good condition. Proceeds from the shop help to support the programs and services of the Violence Prevention Center in Southwestern Illinois. “We sell just about anything except for large appliances like refrigerators and mattresses,” Cugier said. “We have shoes, purses, books, toys, electronics, housewares, home decor, clothing for all ages including babies, jewelry and we always have great seasonal items.” In fact, twice a year the staff closes the store for a week, gives it a thorough cleaning and reopens with the new seasons’ items. “Our next changeover will be October 7 and I know there will be 50 people in line before we open the doors,” she said. “It’s really a fun day – busy, but really fun. Because of our state’s current financial situation, it is vital that we stay strong.”

Hours for the shop are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cugier said there are three parttime staff members plus herself and 65 volunteers who run the shop. The shop is located at 2C Bellevue Park Plaza at the intersection of North Belt West and West Main Street. Donations are accepted Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone wishing to be a Shelter Shop volunteer is asked to call Cugier at (618) 234-4704. The philosophy of the Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois is that all people have the right to be free from harm, to be respected, to determine and pursue their own goals. The Mission of the organization is to work for the elimination of domestic violence in individual lives and society as a whole. The staff is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to provide support, information and resources to those affected by domestic violence. They also offer a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, individual and group counseling for adults and children, court and police advocacy, information and referrals. Please call (618) 235-0892 for more information about the Violence Prevention Center.

"Teachers need flexibility and longevity with their wardrobes so we are loaded with lots of great casual sportswear to mix and match.” Known as the “jacket capital of the Midwest,” shoppers can choose from tons of different styles to wear with a dressy or casual pant or skirt, or even jeans. Don’t wait too long when the new season’s items are placed on the shelves – they will likely be gone by the end of the week. "All of our fall and winter clothing has arrived, but really most of what I carry can be worn throughout the school year," Wigginton said. "There are many new lightweight pant styles, tunics, three-quarter sleeve tops and we will be getting in these great cotton sweaters soon that you can just throw in the washer AND the dryer."

A Christian-based Education For more than 150 years Saint Paul’s Lutheran School has provided families in Troy, Maryville, Highland, Glen Carbon and the surrounding areas with an exceptional education choice. Holding both Illinois State Board of Education recognition and National Lutheran School accreditation, the goal is to help students reach their full potential – in mind, body and spirit – in a Christian environment.

Benefits of a Saint Paul’s Education

• Academic Preparation. Students, on average, score high on national standardized tests and entering high school score an average of 2.7 grade levels above their peers. Graduates have gone on to graduate as Valedictorians or Salutatorians from area high schools as well as attend the Illinois Math and Science Academy. • Small Class Sizes mean our students receive more individualized instruction. Younger students can become acclimated to school with less stress, while building strong fundamental academic skills, and receive personalized attention. • Music/Sports/Extracurricular Activities. Saint Paul’s offers a variety of team sports including volleyball, basketball, baseball, and track and field. Students have opportunities to participate in plays and musicals, band, art, chess club, Model UN as well as be involved in community service projects. • Religious Education. Students receive instruction in God’s word and in regular school subjects from dedicated Christian teachers. Students attend chapel services once a week.

or more than 100 years, the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. Most children served by the agency live in single-parent and low-income families, or households where a parent is incarcerated. “But we don’t just work with the child, we work with the family – ‘wholistically’ with a ‘W’,” President and CEO Natalie Jablonski said. “ We have access to many agencies and resources to help that family get to where they need to go; to help them understand the forms they have to fill out – Big Brothers Big Sisters encourages empowerment.” As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”). Providing a system of ongoing evaluation and support, Big Brothers Big Sisters is proven by independent studies to help families by improving the odds that Littles will perform better in school and avoid violence and illegal activities, and have stronger relationships with

The Southwestern Illinois agency, located in Belleville, is currently helping 1,000 kids and 80 to 90 are on a waiting list because they are in constant need of volunteers, aka Bigs. Of course there is a great need of community support to be able to offer such extensive services and the Southwestern Illinois area has provided just that! There are many fund-raising opportunities throughout the year and one of the longest-running is the Annual House Raffle. Certificates are $100 each and only 3,900 are sold: besides the home, valued at $205,000 and donated by Fulford Homes, there are 46 prizes awarded! The house drawing will be at 6:30 p.m. on August 30 at Auffenberg Ford in O’Fallon. To purchase a ticket before the drawing, contact Big Brothers Big Sisters at (618) 398-3162 or purchase online at www.bbbsil.org. Tickets are also at Reiniger Jewelers in Swansea at 2704 N. Celebrating 90 Years Of Faithful Caring In The Community

M

ark your calendars for “A Celebration: 90 Years of Faithful Caring” Gala from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, September 29 at the St. Clair Country Club. The St. Paul Senior Community Foundation located in Belleville is sponsoring this special event. Join Emcee and long-time Belleville business owner Roger Wigginton for a fabulous evening complete with an oral auction and everyone’s favorite auctioneer Farmer Dave Schumacher. There will also be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and music by the band “Twilight.” Twilight plays the “classics” – rock, classic country, blues, pop, jazz and more. This well-known band has five musicians with over 40 years of experience who play the “songs you love and make you want to sing along.” In 1997, the Board of Directors at St. Paul's Senior Community established a separate Foundation to help make it possible to respond to the unforeseen challenges in the healthcare industry while continuing to provide high quality care to St. Paul’s residents and reaffirming the commitment to the seniors of the community. The primary function of the Foundation is to raise, manage and provide funds in support of the operation of St. Paul's Senior Community now in its beautiful new building, which includes its retirement Apartment Community with memory care as well as the Nursing Facility. St. Paul’s also offers short-term and outpatient rehabilitation. The community is in a resident-centered household model of care. Tickets for the Gala on September 29 are $90 and may be purchased by calling (618) 560-9491 or email skwagner51@gmail.com.

Soars Again On Labor Day Weekend Sept. 1-2 Friday, September 1: 5pm - 11pm • Saturday, September 2: 12pm - 11pm

O

ver the last few years, Midwest Wingfest has served more than 100,000 people over 400,000 wings. Festival goers will find even more amazing features this year with more vendors than ever plus fabulous entertainment including national recording artist Dylan Scott.

While sponsors and volunteers work hard on this great event, the main focus is to raise money for a worthy cause and this year it is Climb for PTSD that provides much needed mental health services to veterans - our heroes - suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. In fact, 100 percent of online donations go directly to Climb for PTSD.

Although the Wingfest is a dedicated wing festival, there all kinds of food items ranging from pulled pork to chili dogs and more. Vendors will compete for Best Gourmet Wing, Best Buffalo Wing and Best Overall Wing. If cooking wings ain't your thing, perhaps eating them will be right up your alley: there are Men's, Women's and Teen Wing Eating Competitions on Saturday with cash prizes awarded. And don’t miss the Midwest Wingfest 5K on Saturday morning – visit the web site to register.

Their current program provides not only mental health services, but PTSD education for families of those suffering from PTSD plus physical fitness and confidence building opportunities. Climb for PTSD’s name derives from monthly climbs outreach and awareness climbs, and symbolizes the lifting of the burden of PTSD from veterans’ shoulders to others and carrying them to a higher level of health.

This year, the kids' area will almost double in size, said Wingfest Founder Doug Shoemaker. "And don't miss the Car Cruise from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday - the first 100 cars will receive a dash plaque."

Please consider donating online at www. midwestwingfest.com/donate.The Wingfest is located outside of St. Clair Square on the east parking lot. For more information, visit the web site at www.midwestwingfest.com or email midwestwingfest@gmail.com.

While Green Earth, located at 441 A South Buchanan, has many loyal customers who found their way to the store, it was great to have their usual access back for the rest of the summer and beyond, said Thad Buckey, owner of Green Earth. "We appreciate the city of Edwardsville taking care of our streets, but we did see a drop in business," Buckey said. "The street looks very nice now and we welcome our customers and new customers back with open arms." All of the staff members are long-time health food specialists who really know and understand the products available, and can help eliminate feelings of doubt when choosing a product – even for pets! “Really, that’s what we are all about – we want people to purchase products that are good for them,” Buckey said. “So many supplements and vitamins aren’t even tested, but we only offer those that are controlled. For example, sports nutrition customers who consume proteins will find brands like Vega Sport and Garden of Life sports line," he said. "In addition, we have Vital protein collagen and the new, popular bone broth proteins that are organic and those without collagen in many flavors." Another example of Green Earth’s high standards is their beauty products and cosmetics

that are “clean, green lines,” he continued. “Our bodies absorb much of what we put on it and in it including chemicals, animal hormones and antibiotics. These outside influences can contribute to all kinds of health problems and most people don’t even know it.” New coolers around the perimeter of the store are stocked with local meats, eggs and honey. In fact, they can barely keep the eggs in stock. Plus loyal customers, who come from all of Southern Illinois, find organic produce, bulk grains, granola, beans, trail mix, bulk herbs and spices, and gluten-free foods, household cleaning supplies, Great Harvest Bread and more. Green Earth even carries dog and cat food, and supplies. There is also a deli serving an almost entirely vegetarian menu with the exception of turkey and tuna sandwiches. Made from scratch, there are hot and cold sandwiches, salads, juices and smoothies, and a special menu just for kids. Every first business Monday of the month is super discount Monday. Green Earth gives every customer 20% off regularly priced supplements plus there are representatives from some of these product lines in the store to answer questions. Enjoy easy access off South Buchanan and stop by from 8 a.m. to 8 pm. seven days a week, (618) 656-3375, www.greenearthgrocer.com.
