Siteman Cancer Center Celebrates Future Location At Memorial Hospital East
S
iteman Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the region, celebrated Feb. 22 the start of construction of its newest facility, at Memorial Hospital East in Shiloh, Ill. Washington University Physicians in Illinois Inc. will continue to provide specialty cancer care to Siteman patients when the new facility replaces the current one in Swansea in early 2020. The event featured cancer patients and their physicians coming together to sign a steel support beam that will become part of the building. Siteman – based at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis – is known for its exceptional cancer care. Its NCI designation recognizes the cancer center’s scientific leadership, resources, and breadth and depth of clinical and laboratory cancer research. Siteman also is one of the top 15 cancer centers nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report’s “2019 Best Hospitals” rankings, which consider survival rates, patient services and other factors. “What a privilege it is to be in Southern Illinois,” said Timothy J. Eberlein, MD, Siteman director and the Spencer T. and Ann W. Olin Distinguished Professor at the School of Medicine. “Siteman Cancer Center has long wanted to be an even bigger part of this great community. Siteman at Memorial East will offer a welcoming, calming environment where patients will receive the most advanced cancer care. This includes access to state-of-the-art technology and to hundreds of clinical trials offering investigational cancer therapies, which are largely unavailable elsewhere in the region, except at other Siteman locations.” Construction is underway on the $38 million, 70,650-square-foot medical office building at Memorial Hospital East, 1404 Cross St., that will include Siteman’s sixth location overall. The facility will replace a temporary location at 4000 N. Illinois Lane in Swansea, where Siteman has been operating since last year. The following health-care providers, now practicing at Siteman’s Swansea location, will move to the new location when it opens. They will be joined by additional physicians in the future.
By the numbers
Siteman Cancer Center at Memorial Hospital East 1404 Cross St., Shiloh, Ill. 62269 Anticipated completion: Early 2020 Total cost of medical office building, including medical technology: $38 million Total square feet: 70,650 Square feet Siteman will occupy: 22,000 for medical oncology, 17,000 for radiation oncology • Medical oncologists William J. Popovic, MD; Alfred O. Greco, MD; Guillermo Rodriguez Jr., MD; John L. Visconti, DO; Nishant Poddar, MD, and nurse practitioner Alicia Carmack • Radiation oncologists Susan J. Laduzinsky, MD, and Jason Lee, MD, PhD, and nurse practitioner Rhonda McCabe. The new facility will accommodate multidisciplinary care with radiation oncology and chemotherapy services, and will provide access to therapeutic clinical trials, which are designed to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative cancer therapies. By participating in a clinical trial, patients can gain access to investigational therapies that are not widely available to the public. For the convenience of patients, the new location also will include a diagnostic laboratory and a pharmacy. “We are very excited to bring Siteman Cancer Center to the Memorial East campus,” said Mark J. Turner, president of Memorial Regional Health Services Inc., which includes Memorial Hospital East and Memorial Hospital Belleville. “This will provide convenient, world-class cancer treatment services to residents throughout the entire region.” BJC HealthCare, which owns and operates Memorial Hospital East, is building the three-story structure, which also will include clinical space for non-cancer care providers affiliated with Memorial and BJC Medical Group of Illinois.

FRUSTRATED WITH REPORT CARDS? • • • • • • •
Problems with tracking Poor comprehension and attention span Loses place while reading Points to words while reading Avoids close work such as reading Reverses letters or words in reading and writing Homework takes FOREVER when it shouldn’t
If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success.
W
hether your child works very hard and still gets a poor report card, or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help.
For more info on vision and learning, please call (618) 667-2020.
When a child complains that he can’t see the board, your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign to schedule an eye exam. Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently, it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an“auditory learner?” These are signs of a vision problem. The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious symptoms which indicates a child could have a vision problem, including:
From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.
Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?
• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?
• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?
ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%
correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Get That Bikini Body Before Summer E
arly spring is the usual time people think about getting bikini ready for the warm weather ahead. Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness has become the premier spot for all related treatments and services for any age in the Metro East and St. Louis area. Dr. Kristen Jacobs, owner and medical director, and nationally known aesthetic medicine specialist, along with Dr. Robert Wise DC, who specializes in weight loss and wellness, want to help every patient feel better about her or himself. “Feeling good about yourself can make you a better person, mom, wife, daughter and friend, among others. We want to help people become confident from within,” said Dr. Kristen Jacobs. “With confidence, you can take on the world!” While there are many services Ooh La La offers to be better prepared for swimsuit days, a few things include weight loss, Coolsculpting, laser hair removal and Thermiva.
Weight Loss: It’s a well-known fact that as you gain weight and become “overweight” and/or “obese,” your risks for the following conditions also increases: heart disease, diabetes, cancers, high blood pressure and other chronic conditions. Losing weight is extremely overwhelming, but Ooh La La’s weight loss program contains everything needed to ensure safe, effective weight loss and continued support to maintain results. By far the most important benefit to Ooh La La’s weight management program - Ideal Protein - is that Dr. Wise supervises. “Like a fingerprint, weight loss is unique to the individual,” Dr. Wise said. “Ideal Protein is a weight loss method that finally offers dieters what they really want ... a structured program capable of putting an end to constant dieting. Our medically developed protocol is a short-term plan with a beginning, a middle and an end. Your weight loss will unfold in four phases that leaves you with the knowledge of
smarter lifestyle choices and smarter eating choices so you are better able to sustain the new, slimmer you after dieting.”
Coolsculpting is also a proven treatment designed to target fat cells and eliminate them in an easy, non-intrusive fashion that exercise and diet can’t achieve as quickly or as effectively. After one visit, patients typically see a noticeable reduction of fat to achieve a slimmer appearance. It takes a couple of months to fully realize the effects, mainly because it takes that long for the body to naturally dispose of the fat cells. Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness Center has over seven years experience and has performed nearly 2,000 treatments. Laser Hair Removal or permanent hair reduction is a safe, convenient and costeffective procedure performed in-office by trained nurses. Ooh La La offers the Cutera ProWave and CoolGlide hair removal technologies. Each is designed for different areas of the body and, together, can be done anywhere on the body from arms and legs to underarms, backs, chest and bikini area. Waxing, tweezing and depilatory creams are temporary methods of hair removal. The ProWave and CoolGlide Lasers offer permanent hair reduction for lasting results! On average, six treatments are recommended for hair removal, although more or less may be needed depending on hair thickness and area being treated. Thermiva: Thermiva is an excellent, non-invasive solution to the occasional leaking after a sneeze, cough or exercise, or decreased sensation during intimate activity. By using radiofrequency energy, skin is heated to naturally stimulate and re-build the body's own collagen that has been lost due to aging. To schedule a consultation, call Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness Center at (618) 288-9117 today! The spa is located at 110 Cottonwood Road in Glen Carbon. www.kristenjacobs.com

You Can Likely Avoid Knee Replacement Surgery
With The Area’s Only Patented “Alternative To Knee Replacement” Program Are you tired of living with sore, painful knees, but don’t want to have knee replacement surgery?
How the Program Works
The good news is that recent treatment options show that the pain associated with OA (osteoarthritis) of the knee may no longer need to be considered an inevitable part of aging. Many people have already tried exercise, but found it to be painful without providing lasting relief. Some people with OA have also tried injections of cortisone, Hyalgan or Synvisc with little to no long-term relief. Associated Physicians Group’s (APG’s) Alternative-to-Knee-Replacement Program has worked wonders for thousands of Metro East patients most of whom had severe (bone-on-bone) OA pain. Even a majority of people who have tried cortisone, steroid or other types of injections and therapies unsuccessfully have finally found pain relief through this FDA approved, patented and evidencebased program.
Are You a Candidate?
• Are your knees stiff in the morning? • Do your knees hurt when going up or down stairs? • Do you frequently take Ibuprofen or Aspirin for your knee pain? • Do the activities you enjoy cause pain in your knees? • Have you been told that you will need knee replacement surgery? If you answered YES to any of the questions above, then you’re a candidate.
APG’s unique program consists of viscosupplementation injections performed under fluoroscopic guidance combined with a specialized form of pain-free physical therapy rehabilitation, and when needed, specialized “unloader” knee bracing that can provide immediate pain relief. The program is based on leading OA research, which documents that injections performed under fluoroscopy (a live-motion x-ray) are significantly more accurate, more effective and less painful. With the fluoroscope, the medical provider can see exactly where the injection is going, giving him/her proof that the medicine is in the knee joint— a vital component to the success of the program. The customized Physical Therapy program is a unique form of high-speed, yet painfree rehab that makes the injections much more effective and much longer lasting.
More About APG
Associated Physicians Group is an integrated Internal Medicine, Pain Management and Physical Therapy facility with 5 convenient locations throughout the Metro East. APG combines the skills of an Internal Medicine Physician, a Board Certified, Fellowship-Trained Pain Physician, Nurse Practitioners, Physical Therapists and Chiropractic Physicians. Having all of these providers under one roof saves the patient time and money, and is a better, more effective way to treat.
Besides Knee Pain, APG also Treats:

Classic Shutters Are Here To Stay! A beautiful interior shutter system out-performs standard horizontal blinds at the window every time! In the last 10 years, energy-efficient and eco-friendly home products, geared toward simplifying our lives, have become more desirable. The window treatment industry has moved forward to meet new goals with more innovations and product improvements than can be mentioned in this article. However, the beautiful and timeless interior shutter system, in all of its different forms, has undergone little transformation and continues to meet our functional and aesthetic design needs. “When a simple-slatted product is called for, please don’t re-invest in more 1-inch and 2-inch horizontal blinds without considering the beauty, value and efficiencies of a custom shutter system,” said Jennaver Brown, owner of Eye on Design Drapery, Blinds and Shutters, Inc. in Downtown Belleville. “In a well-made shutter, home owners can find a durable, energy efficient, eco-friendly and maintenance-free window treatment with privacy and light control features that provide excellent value to the home owner.” Shutters can handle almost every specialty shape, tall or tilt-in window. Recently, shutters have even become motorized to give the homeowner control of those difficult to reach windows that are often found in a custom home. “With 50% of our energy loss occurring at the windows of our home, it is easy to understand that interior shutters are an investment with a measureable return,” said Brown. R-Value of approximately 3.0. A well-measured and well-constructed, high-quality, shutter system, such as the “Newstyle” shutter system by Hunter Douglas, can increase that R-Value by 120% when added to this type of window. Horizontal blinds are generally unable to increase the R-Value of this window type by no more than 25% if properly designed with hidden rout holes. Shutters are infinitely easier to maintain than horizontal blinds because there are no cords and strings. With the high-quality shutter finishes available now, simple dusting or damp cloth cleaning will keep your shutters looking brand new. Additionally, shutters can easily be popped right off of their hinges to get them out of the way for window cleaning: No tools required and no brackets left in the way. Shutters are available in wood, vinyl and composites now that all offer benefits with regard to color options, framing styles, humidity resistance, price and special features. For budgeting purposes, consider costs ranging from $30 - $60 a square foot installed with or without framing dependent upon quantity and upgrades. Take advantage of Eye On Design’s annual Spring Shutter Sale today and see the beauty and value for yourself. Whether you’re spring cleaning or making home improvements,
McCullough's has you covered! In addition to flooring, McCullough’s also specializes in countertops, backsplashes and custom tile showers!
O
n a recent visit to McCullough’s, everything was abuzz with attractive displays showcasing new flooring lines, gorgeous tiles for backsplashes and showers, plus a terrific selection of carpet, ceramic, porcelain, luxury vinyl planks, sheet vinyl and laminate in the Outlet Center. “It’s perfect for those DIY customers!” said owner Tracy McCullough. McCullough’s Flooring is family owned and operated providing sales and installation of all types of flooring for residential and commercial customers. “Some of the new flooring patterns have a really neat story behind them,” she said. For example, one pattern was inspired by the view beneath a chandelier - the outcome is nothing short of extraordinary. Others are inspired by nature. The showroom is overflowing with all the newest styles from the best brands. Customers will find many examples of solid hardwood and engineered hardwood; engineered having a superior resistance to slightly higher and lower moisture levels. Both are beautiful products to quickly update the home. Rich and inviting, hardwood makes a distinctive statement. Because of a great range of natural variations - from boards with extreme character, graining and color variation to those that are evenly colored and consistent - lustrous hardwood can create a very unique floor. The knowledgeable staff will spend time with each customer educating them on the differences in each line of hardwood to find what selection would best fit their needs.
When updating a kitchen or bath, McCullough’s has a huge inventory of tiles and ceramics. “People are often surprised to learn that in addition to flooring we also specialize in countertops, backsplashes and custom tile showers,” McCullough said. The company also offers professional floor cleaning services that leave carpets soft, the texture restored, the colors brightened and thus better able to withstand future soiling. It improves indoor air quality by removing the airborne pollutants that get trapped inside the carpet. “Our cleaning equipment is state-of-the-art and all the heavy equipment stays in the truck meaning nothing enters the home except the operator with a cleaning wand and long hose,” she said. Each technician went through intensive training to become IICRC certified and stays current with all new cleaning technologies. McCullough’s is proud to employ such a talented team of installers. They built their business on the belief that professional installation is just as important as the materials selected. McCullough’s invites customers to look at projects and idea books on Houzz, Facebook and the range of products at www.mcculloughsflooring.com. Visit the showroom at 4400 N. Hearthside Expands The Outdoor Living Division
A
n ongoing theme throughout the home improvement industry and throughout this magazine is the idea of a “stay-cation.” Instead of going on an elaborate vacation, many homeowners are investing more into their home’s backyard aesthetics to create outdoor living areas for family and friends. Hearthside Grill and Fireplace is pleased to announce the expansion of their Outdoor Living area and the arrival of new, high-end outdoor furniture collections including the Agio, Anacara and Castelle brands. “We are embracing the entire outdoor living theme,” said Mark Urban, owner of Hearthside. “Many customers have been asking us for an entire theme or design for their outdoor patios rather than just placing a grill on their deck. So we now offer outdoor kitchens and built-in grills, refrigerators, beer taps and built-in ice buckets, audio and visual systems, fireplaces and more.” A popular trend on the coasts for 10 years, it’s now in full-swing here, Urban said, “and I have been in enough homes delivering grills and here comes a company from St. Louis doing the rest! So the outdoor furniture has definitely been something I have wanted to do for a while.” Urban is also debuting a complete outdoor living showroom on the property of Hearthside to display all the most up-to-date design ideas. “With our in house designers, we will help you build your own oasis! Choose from the newest selection of outdoor rugs, umbrellas, accessories and furniture in aluminum, woven or plastic,” he said. Shown on this page is one of the most popular umbrella collections (white cantilever): a European designed shade that allows the umbrella to rotate 360 degrees. The Cantilever Collection is packed with features and functionality. Offering multi-tilt position capabil-
ity provides the opportunity to easily shade several patio, deck or pool areas from a single installation. Midwestern Propane Gas Co. is a long-time business in Belleville dating all the way back to 1936 in the downtown area. Founders A.J. and Martha Urban first opened as a butane retailer, which at that time was the “new” energy fuel for cooking and heating. They had customers from Chicago all the way to Cairo. The business thrived as the Urbans established a reputation for dependability and service throughout the state and in the early 1950s, the company moved to its present location on South Belt East near Belle-Clair Fairgrounds. As the market and technology changed, so did Midwestern Propane Gas Company. In the 1960s, sales of gas grills and gas logs were added to their services and by the mid-1980s, demand for high-quality leisure products grew exponentially and Hearthside Grill and Fireplace, Ltd. was born in 2000. Taking over ownership from his uncles Darrell and Don Urban, who were the third generation owners of the company, Mark Urban said the charming fireplace and grill showroom highlights all the different products for which they are well-known. The showroom also showcases all manner of grilling accessories for the outdoor chef in your life: tool sets, rubs, sauces, gloves, gift sets, cookbooks, grill gadgets, aprons, thermometers and so much more. Of course there are gift certificates available. Visit Hearthside at 418 S. Belt East in Belleville; (618) 257-0700; www.hearthsidegrill.com.

Plan A Vegetable Garden Early Tips From The U. of I. Extension Horticulture Educator
E
arly spring is the perfect time to plan a vegetable garden. “Growing your own vegetables is a great way to save money at the grocery store, get some exercise, and teach kids where their produce comes from,” said Gemini Bhalsod, a University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator. “For a successful vegetable garden, a little bit of planning can go a long way to tasty harvests.” Bhalsod suggests starting with a brainstorming session with family or neighbors – anyone to share produce with – to decide what plants to grow. “Growing your favorite vegetables will ensure that you are excited to continue working in the garden all season long and that you can enjoy the ‘fruits’ of your labor when the time comes to harvest,” she said. Popular garden vegetables include peas, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, corn and beets. Try and stick to disease-resistant varieties, or those with other interesting features. Armed with a list of desired vegetables, Bhalsod suggested making a chart that includes their planting requirements, such as dates and spacing needed to grow the vegetables adequately. This will help to stay organized and will help decide where to place the plants in the garden. “If you don’t have an already established garden, you will have to consider your site conditions,” she said. Most vegetables require six to eight hours of full sun per day, so make sure the space is scoped to find the sunniest spot. Be sure to avoid areas under trees, or that are shaded by the house. Most popular vegetables, like tomatoes, beans, cucumbers and corn, require full sun. “If you have a shady area, don’t worry! You can still grow root vegetables like carrots and beets and many leafy greens like spinach, chard, kale, and lettuce in a partial shade,” Bhalsod noted. Choose a place where the ground is level and near a water source, if possible. Next, decide what size it will be. “It is always okay to start small, with maybe one or two raised beds or containers, if you are new to gardening,” Bhalsod said. Consider how much space there is, what kids of vegetables will be growing, and how much time it will take to maintain the garden.
Next, decide if there will be raised beds or if planting directly in the soil. “Raised beds can be beneficial because you can control the type of soil mix that is going to be used,” Bhalsod said. The soil needs to drain well, so Bhalsod suggested using a mix of 1:1:1 topsoil, compost, and a mineral component like perlite or vermiculite. If planting directly in the soil, consider a soil test for nutrient levels, pH and heavy metals. When establishing a new garden bed, gardeners will need to kill off existing vegetation before planting. “One of the best ways to kill off existing weeds or turf is to smother them,” Bhalsod said. You can do this by layering wet cardboard or newspaper on the area you want to clear, being sure to weigh the pieces down to prevent light from penetrating. “A downside is that you do have to wait a few months for the grass to die off. You can do this process directly in a raised bed too, and then put your soil mix on top to plant in. For quicker removal, a sod remover can also be used.” Once the garden has been set up, use the vegetable blueprint to start mapping out where the vegetables will go. It is always easier to get it down on paper before planting outside. “Follow these steps and you will be on your way to a well-thought-out and organized vegetable garden this summer,” Bhalsod said.
