Creating “Staycations” For Year Round Enjoyment Family and friends are the anchors in most of our lives. The time spent together always seems too far and few between with everyone’s busy schedules. Working all week long whether at a 9 to 5 office job or working the household affairs, chasing kids, running errands, doing laundry…everyone needs a little down time to recharge the batteries. Dan Flowers, owner of Outdoor Systems, is in the business of helping his customers create an area in their own back yard to hang out with the family, have a nice meal on the patio, maybe build a fire and talk about the day, or host a party. “The one thing I hear from customers is: ‘We want a space that we can use for entertaining our family and friends - a place we can really enjoy now and throughout the year,’” Flowers said. “We like to emphasize the whole family outdoor experience by helping the client create a suitable atmosphere,” he said. “We provide professional design and installation of all phases of outdoor construction: one contact, one phone number.” Flowers oversees each project from start to finish with an emphasis on the details that are sometimes missed by other contractors. “We do almost all of our work in-house,” Flowers said. “My guys are the best in the business! Their craftsmanship and attention to detail are the reason we continue to win awards and have our work featured in different venues. This past year we won a ‘2012 Splash Award’ from the St. Louis chapter of APSP (Association of Pool & Spa Professionals). While we do what we know, we are not too proud to call in an expert subcontractor from time to time as needed.” Outdoor Systems started out as a landscaping company primarily building patios, walls, waterfalls, and installing irrigation and lighting systems. “Over time, we have hired the right employees to help grow the business in other areas like our signature fireplaces, swimming pools and outdoor structures,” he said.

One of their recent projects included a retaining wall, free-form pool with two sheer descent water fountains and big, lighted fire bowls on top. This project also included seven other water features and two separate layout areas. Cool decking was also a part of this project so that the surface is cool to the touch during really hot summer days. This pool has a salt generating system and communicates with the homeowner’s IPhone and IPad. They can turn on the pool, lights, fountains and water features with the press of a button from anywhere, at anytime! This is one smart pool, and it’s eco-friendly. Attention to detail is a key attribute of the work completed by Outdoor Systems: “This is big on my list,” Flowers said. “We take on a lot of projects that others can’t or don’t know how to do.” Flowers has a diverse background in the electrical and construction industry. “I believe one of my biggest assets is that within five minutes of viewing a site I can picture the finished project - I am an ideas guy,” he said. “I see things that some people have a hard time visualizing. We can take those ideas and put them on paper or on video as a 3D walk through of your space. The bottom line is we help build your dreams!” Cover Photo Project The gorgeous scene on the front cover is of a residence in Belleville. “This couple wanted a place to entertain their family and friends,” Flowers said. The full project can be viewed on the website through pictures and a couple of videos that show the progression of the project. Photos by Jarred Flowers. Outdoor Systems, Inc. offers warranties on their work and is available for projects anywhere in the Metro East and St. Louis. Other extended regions include Lake of the Ozarks. Please call Dan Flowers at (618) 281-8270 or visit www. outdoorsystemsinc.com.

SPENGLER GOES PINK Launches Think Pink Thursdays & Offers Free Service & Reduced Pricing for Women Fighting Breast Cancer ®

The Men and Women and Spengler Plumbing, Heating and Cooling are launching Think Pink Thursdays® in the month of October as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“Every Thursday, the men and women of Spengler will wear pink, instead of our trademark red shirts, to remind ourselves that no matter how difficult our job my be that day, it doesn’t compare to the battle that our wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and friends face fighting breast cancer,” said Jason Spengler, President of the 42 year old O’Fallon based Company. In addition to wearing pink every Thursday, the Spengler Company is also announcing that they will be providing women undergoing active treatment for breast cancer with free service calls and up to 50% off list pricing for materials when a new part or product is needed. “When a woman is fighting for her life, the last thing she or her family needs to worry about is how to pay for the unexpected repairs that could happen with a water leak or heating/cooling break down,” Spengler said. “Our clients are our neighbors. And when a neighbor needs help, you step up and help.” Over half of Spengler’s employees have had a loved one or friend diagnosed with breast cancer and wanted to do something for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, therefore, Think Pink Thursdays® was created. Spengler’s Think Pink Thursdays® initiative features Rendy Faulkner, 44 of O’Fallon, who is a 4-year survivor and spouse of a Spengler Employee. Rendy was diagnosed with Stage 3 Breast Cancer when she was 41 in 2009 and participated in a photography exhibit of breast cancer survivors by local photographer David Wild at that time. “I was honored when asked to be included in Spengler’s effort to help women going through treatment,” Faulkner said. “I was “It is our hope that by joining the fight against breast cancer we blessed with hundred of friends and family who helped me during can help raise awareness and encourage women to get their my own surgeries and treatment. What Spengler is doing will yearly mammograms,” Spengler said. “We just want them to mean so much to the women and families fighting for their lives.” know we are there for them.” “My mother, Karen, just celebrated her 7th year of surviving breast cancer,” said Laura Schmitt, Relationship Marketing Manager. “My Spengler family was there for me through all of her treatments and now we can pass that goodwill along to those we serve.” If you are someone you know is undergoing treatment for breast cancer and has an unexpected plumbing, heating or cooling problem, just call Spengler 618-623-0572 for information.

{

}

Spengler’s Corporate Headquarter’s located at 1402 Frontage Road in O’Fallon will also feature a 75-foot pink ribbon painted on the lawn to honor all women who have had breast cancer. Women and their families can come and write the name of a loved one who has survived or passed away to help form the ribbon.

ou have wanted to put the final touch on your home’s décor and tie it all together with coordinating window treatments, but you aren’t sure that you can justify the expense. Consider then, that the properly designed window treatment can not only add beauty and style to your home but also work to significantly reduce your home maintenance costs over time. A well-engineered plan to dress your windows in the right shutters, silks, sheers or shades will increase your home’s energy efficiency throughout the year and protect your furniture and flooring investments from the permanent damage caused by direct sunlight. With approximately 44 percent of your utility bill attributed to heating and cooling, energy-efficient window treatments can translate into measurable year-round savings. Many energy experts recommend adding more efficient window coverings rather than going to the expense of replacing the windows. Use of window treatments to control drafts and heat loss dates back hundreds of years to those heavy velvet puddled draperies found in the castles of Europe. Your local window treatment professional can introduce you to the most energy-efficient products available today. A product’s R-Value is a measurement of its ability to keep heat in and cold out. The higher the R-Value, the better that product is at retaining indoor warmth. A phenomenal product designed to increase R-Value is the

10 | Marketplace Magazine | Fall Issue 2013 | marketplacemagazineonline.com

Hunter Douglas Architella® cellular shade. This product features an innovative twist that provides more depth of color at the window and an R-Value of 4.5 in addition to your current window system. Incredibly, this figure is more than 7-times greater than the R-Value provided by a common 2-inch faux wood blind making it a better choice for long-term energy savings. Another elegant and time-tested solution for the reduction of heat loss at the window is the selection of classic shutter systems which offer an average R-Value of 2.5 and provide you with multiple levels of privacy and light control. A product’s Summer U-Value is a measurement of its ability to reflect heat. For example, a window treatment that reduces incoming heat by 70 percent, has a summer U-Value of .30. The lower the U-Value, the more effective it is in reflecting heat away from your home. To reduce heat gain, select a low U-Value treatment with white- or light-colored backing and install it an inch or two from the glass to create an air pocket. Non-reflected heat that builds up in the pocket during the day will dissipate through the glass at night when the temperature outside cools. Not surprisingly, you will find that shutters and cellular shades can provide the low U-Values you need to lower your electric bill. Put your window treatments to work saving you money by employing them in the business of ultra-violet control and asset protection. Ultraviolet light entering your

home as sunlight will quickly fade, weaken and destroy your furniture, flooring, upholstery and artwork. Sheers are multi-talented in that they can reduce this incoming ultra-violet light by 65 percent or more while reducing glare, preserving outdoor visibility, adding beauty, and providing you with daytime privacy. Hunter Douglas has revolutionized the use of sheers by integrating them into beautiful horizontal and vertical products such as the versatile cordless Duolite® shade and the popular Silhouette® and Luminette® shades designed to block 88 percent of incoming UV rays.

America’s Largest Concrete Levelers

Finally! An Affordable Solution

To Uneven Concrete Communities everywhere are plagued with uneven sidewalks and steps, and sunken patios and driveways. These are more than inconveniences - they represent dangerous and unsightly conditions. Every property owner - residential and commercial - is looking for cost effective solutions to these vital and necessary repairs.

“We call it concrete leveling, but the original term is mud jacking,” said Tony Goforth. “You may also hear the terms slab jacking, concrete raising, injection leveling - whatever you want to refer to it as - it will save you time, money and your concrete. We also offer caulking and crack repair.

Over 20 years ago, Grover Miller developed his first self-contained pumping unit to level concrete. Drawing on his 35 years of experience in the construction industry, Miller saw the need for a costeffective method of raising and saving concrete, and developed a unique piece of equipment to fill that need.

“Our product combined with customer service gives a great competitive edge in the market,” Goforth said.

The Differences Between Mud Jacking, Slab Jacking and A-1 Concrete

AFTER

Generally in mud jacking or slab jacking, a portable pump is carried or wheeled to the location of the area to be raised. A hole of up to 3-inches in diameter is drilled that can weaken the area and allow too much material to flow too quickly causing cracking of slabs.

By drilling a small, 1-inch hole in an existing slab (from sidewalk blocks to airport runways!), an environmentally safe slurry is then hydraulically injected into the existing slab which lifts it to the original position: fast, cost effective and guaranteed. Miller developed the adjustable piston and screener for the self-contained leveling unit, which is truck mounted so there is no need to wheel heavy equipment onto the customer’s lawn. These, along with other innovations, have allowed A-1 Concrete Leveling to provide a highly efficient and cost effective method for leveling concrete surfaces compared to traditional “tear-out” and “repour” methods. In 2007, Tony and Karen Goforth of Collinsville discovered A-1 Concrete and this innovative technology, and joined forces with the company.

BEFORE

Modern concrete leveling techniques at A-1 Concrete utilizes a 1-inch hole to avoid weakening the slab or raising the slabs too quickly. A pulverized limestone that is denser than soil is used at a slower, safe pace.

BEFORE

Benefits of Concrete Leveling Over Replacement • The process is completed and ready for use in a matter of hours. • Landscaping and adjacent areas are usually unaffected! • Concrete leveling reduces job time, energy utilization and environmental problems associated with concrete demolition and disposal. • Leveling usually represents a savings of 50 to 75% over replacement.

A Love Of Art Leads To Uncommon Career

F

inding one’s passion can often take a lifetime. But for Michelle Veit, Principle Finishing Technician at Precision Wood Restoration, that passion began with an early love of drawing.

to woodworking to wood technology. It was quite a challenge.”

“I’ve loved to draw for as long as I can remember,” she said. “When I was in third grade, my sister and I would lay on the floor after “lights out.” I would draw pictures and tell her stories about them.” Growing up, “I carried around a notebook and would sketch what I saw on our farm in Millstadt,” she continued. “I drew all the way through high school and college at SIUE where I graduated with a degree in art.” Not long after that, Veit and her sister decided to scour local flea markets to find furniture that could be re-purposed and refinished. They wanted to bring their artistic sensibilities to otherwise discarded objects. Unsatisfied with the results of their first do-it-yourself efforts, the two young women began to search for a way to improve their skills in working with wood. “After researching and visiting several schools, my sister and I decided to attend the National Institute of Wood Finishing in Minnesota,”Veit said. “The program there was very strong, covering everything from color theory

While at the Institute, she met John Hurn, who told her about his fledgling wood restoration business in Southern Illinois. “At the time, I had other plans and was not really interested. But, my plans changed and John was still looking for help,” Veit said. “John and I agreed to meet at a Bread Co. here, and he offered me a job.” “I am very pleased that Michelle decided to join Precision Wood Restoration,” said Hurn, owner of the company. “She brings a high level of skill to the job. And, our customers love her!” According to Veit, “One of my favorite things about Precision Wood Restoration is having the opportunity to restore antiques. As the restoration proceeds step-by-step, I get to see the beauty of the piece emerge from years of use,” she explained.

“I love just thinking about where the piece has been and the history it has - antiques have a story. In a way, it’s like those stories I used to tell my sister. Only now, I get to tell them with furniture.” Please call (855) 367-7967 for more information and visit www. precisionwoodrestoration.com.

This Fall, Give Your Lawn a Facial. Top Dress With Compost! Your lawn was good to your family this summer. Reciprocate this fall by giving it a top dressing “facial” using the ultimate 100% natural lawn care product – STA-certified compost. Just as a spa facial restores a healthy glow and smooth texture to your skin, top-dressing – which simply involves spreading a thin layer of compost over your lawn, then incorporating it with a rake – will help produce a green, lush lawn next spring. It can also lessen dips in the lawn’s surface, help level turf and serve as an excellent first step toward the repair of stressed lawn areas. Further, top dressing will boost the nutritive uptake of your grass, promote deep-rooted turf, plus help balance moisture levels and mitigate compaction in the soil. If you have a “working” lawn where your kids love to run and play, top dressing can even add to your peace of mind since hard falls figure to hurt less on a softer, top-dressed surface. When it is time to top dress, use the right stuff: all-natural STA-certified compost, packed with nutrients to help grasses take winter in stride and flourish next spring. Applying it is easy with top dressing equipment, available for rent at St. Louis Composting. And while you’re at it, fall is also a great time to re-seed bare or sparse spots on your lawn. The cool weather helps sprouts establish strong root systems.

Here’s how to reseed.

• First, core-aerate the lawn, concentrating on heavily trafficked areas. • Second, spread grass seed, lightly rake and water. • Third, use a top dressing machine or manure spreader to apply a ½-inch layer of compost. • Fourth, use a rake or a weighted drag to smooth the surface, break down soil plugs and backfill holes. • Then, keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate. Treat your lawn like the lady she is. Top dress with compost this fall to smooth, soften, beautify and fortify. St. Louis Composting (www.stlcompost.com) is the region’s largest composting operation with locations in Missouri and Illinois. It operates facilities at 39 Old Elam Ave. in Valley Park, Mo.; 11294 Schaefer Dr. in Maryland Heights, Mo.; 560 Terminal Row in St. Louis City; 13060 County Park Road in north St. Louis County; and 5841 Mine Haul Road in Belleville. It holds the Seal of Testing Assurance from the United States Composting Council.

Every Piece Tells a Story Every piece of furniture has a story to tell about the people who have used it over the years. Sixty years ago, a young southern Illinois couple bought these chairs for their new home. The chairs sat ain sunny kitchen as they raised two boys and a girl. As the years rolled by, these chairs witnessed many of the events that bind families together – including the birth of the first grandchild, a boy.

Michelle, at Precision Wood Restoration , re-colored and refinished the chairs. The refinished chairs recently arrived in Dallas, TX to help that first grandchild raise his own boys.

Soon that boy grew up, got married, and began to have children of this own. His grandparents passed these chairs along to him.

Precision Wood Restoration

But, all those years and all that family had taken a toll on the chairs. There were a lot of dents and dings and scratches – all the marks of well used furniture.

These chairs have touched the lives of four generations and help to carry the family stories across the years. Let us help tell your family’s story.

Beating Breast Cancer With Healthy Lifestyle, Positive Outlook

C

onscientious of leading a healthy lifestyle, Cindy Guthrie, 55, has always understood the value of a balanced diet and exercise. Never without a smile and enough energy for 10 people, she said the shock of hearing the words “ you have breast cancer” was, well, shocking. “I thought to myself – OK? I eat sensibly, I exercise, I watch my weight, I do everything right! How can this happen to me?” Not only was it hard to believe from a health standpoint, but she had just lost her dear sister, Penny, to cancer after a four-year battle. “My sister passed away in June 2012; I found a lump on July 7 - almost a month to the day of Penny’s passing - and on July 23 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. On that same day, I said my decision is to have a double mastectomy and get this out of my body!” There were other less radical options, but not for Guthrie. “There was never a question in my mind about what I was going to do,” she said. “I was taking no chances.” Her particular cancer was related to Hormone Replacement Therapy, which she took for seven years prior. “I knew HRT increased my chances for cancer, but at the time it made sense for quality of life,” she said. She came through the surgery with flying colors during which a port for chemotherapy was inserted into her chest. Within a week of her mastectomy, she was walking in the mall and didn’t miss a beat at work.

On September 23, Guthrie began chemo at Illinois Oncology Ltd. in Swansea that lasted through January 2. “While the chemo was rather uneventful,” she said with her usual positive perspective, “the most memorable day was shortly after the first round when I was on a girls’ trip – my hair just started falling out. So when I got home, my husband took a razor and just buzzed it all off!" In fact it is her husband, Gary Guthrie, whom she credits with being so helpful during the whole ordeal, which ended up including 33 radiation treatments – “Monday through Friday for six weeks. It really doesn’t hurt if you follow directions.” Her last day was April 9 and then she will undergo blood testing every three months from now on. Breast reconstruction surgery is scheduled for November when the port will also be removed. “Having the port removed will be such a relief then you know you’re going to be alright. In four years, my sister never had her port taken out.” Meanwhile though, she is preparing to be a first-time grandmother! “I can’t wait!” Guthrie has two daughters each living on opposite coasts but that didn’t stop them from caring for their mother throughout the past year. “They were great and I have so many good friends who sent me flowers and cards, and food! I have a stack of cards 4 inches tall!,” she exclaimed. “You know those cards meant the world to me. People don’t realize that something like that can make you feel so much better. Anytime I hear that someone is ill, I send a card – everytime!”

"A great find for me was caringbridge.org," Cindy Guthrie said. "You find others to connect with who are going through a similar situation. It's a wonderful online support group yet it can be confidential."

Uncovering The Many Benefits of Spa and Wellness Treatments Submitted by Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness

Wellness services like facials and acupuncture are often viewed as “froo froo” or luxury services. The many benefits of these are often overlooked and quite advantageous to both body and mind. Aside from being a superb form of relaxation, facials lay a great foundation for good skin care. A therapeutic facial will consist of deep cleansing and professional extractions. Extractions are the release of impurities in the form of blackheads and pustules. A specially trained Esthetician will perform extractions without injuring the skin or leaving scars. Facials incorporate massage techniques of the face, neck and décolleté to aid in increased circulation. This increased blood flow actually improves cellular health and healing, while reducing inflammation. While your skin will be glowing and refreshed, your entire body will benefit from this treatment on a monthly basis. Make sure Massage is part of your relaxation plan whether it’s bi-weekly or monthly. Massage gives your body and mind time to unwind, releases tension and encourages circulation to move toxins out of the body.

A 30- or 60-min massage can truly work wonders! Massage has proven to be extremely helpful before or after a sporting event, too. Acupuncture is a branch of holistic medicine that balances the body’s energy to maximize health and healing. It is also helpful in relieving pain, tension, and fatigue. Treatments should be offered by a specially trained medical professional. The treatment provider will tap extremely thin needles at strategic points on the body. This may also be combined with microcurrent to stimulate the energy flow. Treatments are recommended two to three times per week, lasting 20 to 40 minutes depending on the patient’s health concerns. Perhaps needles frighten you a bit, then Auriculotherapy, or “no needle” Acupuncture, is for YOU! This treatment involves manipulation of the outer surface of the ear reflex points. Every part of our body is connected to the reflexes in the ears, making Auriculotherapy extremely beneficial in smoking cessation, weight loss and pain management. Patients often benefit from a combination of both Acupuncture and Auriculotherapy. Your medical professional can design a treatment program to meet your goals. Remember, both your body and mind deserve to be healthy! By naturally reducing stress, pain and other ailments, you can actually save yourself money in medications, doctor visits, and time spent missing work and important functions. Learn what treatments will best suit your goals. For more information or to schedule your complimentary skin analysis, call Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness at (618) 288.9117. Visit OohLaLaWellness. com to view actual before and after photos. The 12,000 square-foot Spa & Wellness Center is located at 110 Cottonwood Road in Glen Carbon.

Frustrated with Report Cards?

W

hether your child works very hard and still gets a poor report card, or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help. When a child complains that he can’t see the board, your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign to schedule an eye exam. Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently, it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an “auditory learner?” These are signs of a vision problem. The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious symptoms which indicates a child could have a vision problem, including:

• Problems with tracking • Poor comprehension and attention span • Loses place while reading • Points to words while reading • Avoids close work such as reading • Reverses letters or words in reading and writing • Homework takes FOREVER when it shouldn’t

If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success. For more information visit: www.readingandvision.com or call 618-667-2020.

From STRUGGLING... 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD? • Make number/letter reversals such as “b” and “d”? • Have reading and homework take longer than it should?

...to SUCCESS! EliminatE Doubt!

If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Don Rodgers Ltd. Anchors The West End Of Belleville For 37 years now, Don Rodgers Ltd. has been an anchor in the West End of Belleville not only as a successful retail business but as a champion for the community. Always “in-the-know,” owner Roger Wigginton has made it a life-long mission to be involved in making the West End a wonderful place to live, work, and shop.

Visitors flock to the charming store from as far away as the Illinois communities of Springfield, Alton, Christopher and Prairie du Rocher; or from St. Charles and St. Peters, South and West Counties, and Fenton in Missouri. “Really, we are the last fashion boutique in the area that offers men’s and women’s merchandise,” Wigginton said. “The things we carry here will never be found in a shopping mall. Consequently, our customers love that uniqueness and the very competitive prices. I keep my overhead down and pass that savings on to you.” Studying the trends daily, he and his long-time buyer, Linda Watson, could see that fashion designers were no longer showing as many dresses as in the past. Seeing an opportunity, they wisely created a niche in dressy separates perfect for special occasions such as weddings, cruises and nights on the town. “We offer matching solid slacks, skirts and shells in every color and then we combine a fabulous blouse or jacket to make an amazing outfit,” Wigginton said. Then all you need is a different colorful blouse or jacket and voila… a new outfit! And by the way, most of their merchandise is made in America or Canada, and come in easy-care, wrinkle-free fabrics most of which can be washed. Known as the “jacket capital of the Midwest,” shoppers can choose from tons of different styles to wear with a dressy pant or skirt, or even jeans. Don’t wait too long when the new season’s items are placed on the shelves – they will likely be gone by the end of the week. A couple of Don Rodgers’ Canadian lines have quite the following because of their great fits

and comfy fabrics. In fact, there is a fine-wale corduroy pant by Tribal that Wigginton has sold 1,000 pairs of in the last three years alone. Yes – that’s 1,000 with three zeroes. “Every year I have ordered this particular pant in four different colors and every year some women come in and by all four colors – now they have 12 pairs in 12 different colors!!” New this year are the Euro pull-on pants which happen to be the hottest thing going in Europe. “These are perfect for long tunics or sweaters,” he said. “I have them in four different colors, and will be getting the Ethyl jeans soon – these jeans have the Euro waistline with skinny legs.” The men’s department is equally as impressive with such sophisticated brands as Cutter and Buck, Austin Reed, Forsyth of Canada and Tailor Byrd. Here customers can find suits, sportcoats, dress shirts, golf shirts, sweaters, trousers, casual pants and jeans. And there are two seamstresses for alterations available. “Fall is a fun time of the year around here. I’m getting new merchandise every day – the UPS man doesn’t ever pass us by.” Even though he still works six days a week at Don Rodgers, he finds the time to be involved in the city and is the co-chairperson of the West Belleville Promotional Committee which falls under the Belleville Chamber umbrella. “I really enjoy what I’m doing right now,” he said, “and as long as I have my health, I’ll keep doing it!” Photos by Gary Luttrell Photography.

actually help us pay the bills! Last year we had 150 guests in attendance and of course we would like to have more. It’s really a great evening.” The Violence Prevention Center of Southwestern Illinois (VPC) has been in existence for 34 years providing comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence in St. Clair, Randolph and Monroe counties. “I think many people still refer to our agency as the Women’s Crisis Center even though our name changed 13 years ago,” she said. “We changed the name of our agency because children and men are affected as well by domestic violence.” Unbelievably, one of every three families is affected in some way by abuse. “It’s an epidemic situation and the trend is increasing, not decreasing,” Vecchio said. “Our mission is pretty simple: “We are working for the elimination of domestic violence in individual lives and society as a whole, by providing emergency services, comprehensive services and longterm education for the prevention of further abuse.” VPC has a 35-bed shelter for emergency services for women and children who are fleeing abusive relationships and need a safe haven. “Often victims are extremely reluctant to pursue help, but VPC can help break the cycle of domestic violence if they simply reach out to us. Victims may obtain assistance by calling our hotline at 618-235-0892.VPC provides a myriad of services including a 24-hour crisis hotline, an emergency shelter, individual and group counseling, police and court advocacy ser-

vices, including assisting victims with obtaining Orders of Protection, and prevention and education in the community. A multi-faceted agency, the Prevention Program was formalized in 1994, allowing the Center to provide training for clergy, police, health care professionals, schools and other concerned citizen groups. In 1986, the Shelter Shop located at the intersection of North Belt West and West Main Street in Belleville, opened as a resale store that sells donated clothing, household items and furniture in order to aid in the financial support of the Center. In addition, the store’s merchandise is available, free of charge, to all clients who demonstrate a need for clothing and household items.
