SPENGLER GOES PINK Spengler has provided over $50,000 in plumbing, heating and cooling services to women fighting breast cancer. Last October, Spengler announced the launch of Think Pink Thursdays® to raise awareness about Breast Cancer and offered women fighting breast cancer free and reduced pricing. Over the last year, Spengler has provided over $50,000 in plumbing, heating and cooling services to women fighting breast cancer. “When a woman is fighting for her life, the last thing she or her family needs to worry about is how to pay for the unexpected repairs that could happen with a water leak or heating/cooling break down,” Jason Spengler, President said. “Our clients are our neighbors. And when a neighbor needs help, you step up and help.” As part of the ongoing initiative Spengler provides women undergoing active treatment for breast cancer with free service calls and up to 50% off list pricing for materials when a new part or product is needed. Over half of Spengler’s employees have had a loved one or friend diagnosed with breast cancer and so “helping other women who are battling breast cancer was just the right thing to do,” said Laura Schmitt, Relationship Marketing Manager. Schmitt’s mother, Karen just celebrated her 8th year of surviving breast cancer. In addition to providing financial support for women, the men and women of Spengler wear pink every Thursday as part of their Think Pink Thursdays®. “Every Thursday, the men and women of Spengler wear pink, instead of our trademark red shirts, to remind ourselves that no matter how difficult our job my be that day, it doesn’t compare to the battle that our wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and friends face fighting breast cancer,” said Jason Spengler, President of the 43 year old O’Fallon based Company. “It is our hope that by joining the fight against breast cancer we can help raise awareness and encourage women to get their yearly mammograms,” Spengler said. “We just want them to know we are there for them.” If you are someone you know is undergoing treatment for breast cancer and has an unexpected plumbing, heating or cooling problem, just call Spengler 618-623-0572 for information.

Spengler’s Corporate Headquarter’s located at 1402 Frontage Road in O’Fallon, will also feature a 75-foot pink ribbon painted on the lawn to honor all women who have had breast cancer. Women and their families can come and write the name of a loved one who has survived or passed away to help form the ribbon.

Renew Your Home

Reduce Your Energy Bills

You have wanted to put the final touch on your home’s décor and tie it all together with coordinating window treatments, but you aren’t sure that you can justify the expense. Consider then, that the properly designed window treatment can not only add beauty and style to your home, but also work to significantly reduce your home maintenance costs over time. A well-engineered plan to dress your windows in the right shutters, silks, sheers or shades will increase your home’s energy efficiency throughout the year and protect your furniture and flooring investments from the permanent damage caused by direct sunlight. With approximately 44 percent of your utility bill attributed to heating and cooling, energy-efficient window treatments can translate into measurable year-round savings. Many energy experts recommend adding more efficient window coverings rather than going to the expense of replacing the windows. Use of window treatments to control drafts and heat loss dates back hundreds of years to those heavy velvet puddled draperies found in the castles of Europe. Your local window treatment professional can introduce you to the most energy-efficient products available today. A product’s R-Value is a measurement of its ability to keep heat in and cold out. The higher the R-Value, the better that product is at retaining indoor warmth. A phenomenal product designed to increase R-Value is the Hunter Douglas Architella® cellular shade. This product features an innovative twist that provides more depth of color at the window and an R-Value of 4.5 in addition to your current window system. Incredibly, this figure is more than 7-times greater than the R-Value provided by a common 2-inch faux wood blind making it a better choice for longterm energy savings. Another elegant and time-tested solution for the reduction of heat loss at the window is the selection of classic shutter systems which offer an average R-Value of 2.5 and provide you with multiple levels of privacy and light control.

A product’s Summer U-Value is a measurement of its ability to reflect heat. For example, a window treatment that reduces incoming heat by 70 percent, has a summer U-Value of .30. The lower the U-Value, the more effective it is in reflecting heat away from your home. To reduce heat gain, select a low U-Value treatment with white- or light-colored backing and install it an inch or two from the glass to create an air pocket. Non-reflected heat that builds up in the pocket during the day will dissipate through the glass at night when the temperature outside cools. Not surprisingly, you will find that shutters and cellular shades can provide the low U-Values you need to lower your electric bill. Put your window treatments to work saving you money by employing them in the business of ultra-violet control and asset protection. Ultraviolet light entering your home as sunlight will quickly fade, weaken and destroy your furniture, flooring, upholstery and artwork. Sheers are multi-talented in that they can reduce this incoming ultra-violet light by 65 percent or more while reducing glare, preserving outdoor visibility, adding beauty, and providing you with daytime privacy. If you would like to justify the expense of luxurious custom window treatments in your home, work with an experienced window treatment professional to select hard-working window treatments that can meet all of your design requirements. You shouldn’t be afraid to invest in window treatments that look magnificent in your home if they are designed to reduce your home maintenance costs. Jennaver Brown is the owner of Eye on Design, a full-service window treatment shoppe featuring a beautiful Hunter Douglas GalleryTM and a tremendous line of custom fabrics. Save now on Hunter Douglas window coverings with the Fall Rebate Sale! Located at 309 E. Main Street in Belleville; 618-257-9750; www.eod4u.com.

Polished Concrete Is Affordable, Environmentally Safe And Attractive

Increasingly popular within commercial and residential facilities is polished concrete: a process that enhances the natural beauty of existing concrete by hardening and polishing the concrete. The benefits of natural Asealed appearance. Why choose to polish your concrete floor? There are four significant reasons why polished concrete is a better alternative for a long -term solution. Pleasing Aesthetics: People typically compare polished concrete’s cost and its appearance to other materials. It is important to note that polished concrete is a viable, economical and long-lasting flooring option. By smoothing and exposing the aggregate in the concrete, followed up by polishing, a design that has a natural stone appeal and appears expensive and elegant is created. Increased Ambient Lighting: High light reflectivity of polished concrete is another important benefit, especially for office buildings, hotels, restaurants and other public facilities that want to project a bright, clean, professional image. Polishing can give concrete a higher degree of shine, similar to polished marble or granite that can be achieved with a high-gloss coating. This means greater visibility and fewer overhead lights are required in buildings with polished floors. Environmentally Friendly: Polished concrete utilizes low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which makes it an environmentally friendly surface. There are no coatings applied, such as epoxies, urethanes or waxes. And there are no slurry or hazardous waste. In addition, polished concrete

floors are recognized by the United States Green Building Council and LEED certification as an environmentally friendly flooring option. Lower Lifetime Cost: One benefit of polished concrete is lower maintenance cost. In high traffic areas especially, such as schools, hallways and corridors, polished concrete holds up better and lasts longer than traditional floor covering systems. Not only are polished concrete floors easy to clean, requiring only damp mopping, they can resist scuffmarks and tire marks. Also, the downtime required for the polishing process is minimal, allowing service or traffic on the surface to begin almost immediately. Bricks and Stones also is an expert in the creation of concrete countertops. The real advantage with these counters is that they make possible so many new, custom, one-of-a-kind designs. Concrete counters are the trend now, yet they have been out long enough to amend early problems. Concrete could be the right choice for your home if: • You want something unique and personalized • You want something that looks natural and has character • You appreciate high-quality, hand-crafted items • Granite is too shiny, too formal, too common • Synthetic solid surface materials look and feel like plastic • You need a color or visual texture that's not available with other countertop materials For more information about polished concrete or concrete countertops, you may call Bricks and Stones at (618) 363-0829 and visit www.creativeconcretepros.com.

elebrating their first year and a half at Scott’s Landscaping and Exterior Lighting, owners Josh Martie and Dan Fieker, are very pleased with business and have made a few improvements and adjustments to make Scott’s a onestop-shop for all exterior needs. “We have had a great start to the business and with that we are planning many new ideas for the start of 2015,” said Martie with a smile. Customers will always be able to count on that same great staff and top-notch customer service, and they have already added a few things like fencing and concrete work which is a natural extension of what the company has always offered. Working for Scott’s the 12 years before owning it, Martie knows every aspect of the business. He began at Scott’s as a landscape laborer and worked his way up establishing core relationships with customers along the way. “I try to visit with our clients at least three times per year: spring, summer and fall,” he said. He also obtained an education in horticulture at Southwestern Illinois College. Discussing trends in their business, the two coowners think more people are staying put in their current homes and rehabbing things they want to change, and the “back-yard” vacation is becoming even more popular. Of course the economy plays a role in this trend, but Fieker also thinks cable television shows for do-it-yourselfers give people the ideas and motivation to start a project but they know they need help from a professional.

“That’s where we step in with professionally designed landscaping including the plants and trees, patios, outdoor fireplaces, water features, sprinkler systems, exterior lighting and now fencing,” Fieker said. “We are a one-stop-shop – that’s really our strength and that’s what makes us different from the guy in a truck.” Technology has also improved at Scott’s. With their gorgeous computer image design programs, customers can walk into the consulting room and literally see their own home on a huge monitor with new landscaping around it. “They don’t have to visualize anything – it’s right there and we have the ability to move things around,” Martie said. In the garden center, they are creating a resource center where customers can sit down and research their projects. “We plan to have a horticulture encyclopedia,” Fieker said. And don’t miss the quaint retail area loaded with all kinds of unique sculptures, bird baths, fountains, pottery, garden flags, benches, and so much more. Make plans to visit the elaborately decorated store during holiday open houses complete with reindeer, firegrilled pizzas in the outdoor pizza oven, and holiday decorations plus gifts for purchase. Scott's also offers residential and commercial holiday lighting. Call today to set an appointment. Scott’s is located in Fairview Heights on Old Collinsville Road just minutes from St. Clair Square: 5515 Old Collinsville Road; (618) 632-9338; www.scottsgardencenter.com.

Breast Cancer Screening Has Helped To Increase Survival By Almost 35% mortality. Ultrasound is commonly used for diagnostic follow-up of an abnormality seen on mammograms or in very dense breasts. In addition, the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in combination with mammography, is emerging as the most beneficial for high-risk patients.

T

here has been more evidence regarding the benefits of screening for breast cancer than for any other cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second deadliest cancer in women. The chance of dying from breast cancer has decreased by one third in the last few decades due in part to the use of screening. The purpose of breast cancer screening is to detect the cancer at an early stage before a lump can be felt. Mammography remains the mainstay of breast cancer screening and it has been found to decrease breast cancer

Major risks include age, genetic predisposition and estrogen exposure. Breast density is also a significant risk factor, particularly in women ages 40 to 49 years. Women with a high risk of breast cancer, such as those with genetic mutation in BRCA1 and BRCA2, and those who have multiple close relatives with breast cancer should review information about genetic testing and screening recommendations in higher risk individuals.

If the mammogram is abnormal, there will be further testing, but in 90 percent of women with an abnormal result breast cancer is not found. Most expert groups also recommend that routine mammograms should continue as long as possible in a woman’s life because the risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. For more information, please call the Maryville Women’s Center at (618) 288-2970. The center is located at 2016 Vadalabene Drive in Maryville; www.mymwc.org.

Following a mammogram, a radiologist will review and interpret the X-ray. Some patients may need more images taken, but this is common and does not mean cancer is present. Extra images simply provide a more accurate and clear view of the breast tissue. Results should be received within 30 days; if not, call the doctor and don’t assume the mammogram was normal. Always err on the safe side.

Merle Norman-Fairview Lends Their Expertise To Cancer Patients

H

earing a diagnosis of cancer isn’t something we can imagine unless the disease has personally touched us ourselves. Women undergoing treatment for cancer can suffer from many side effects including hair loss and dry skin. Fortunately, there is a lot of help in the Metro East community to assist people through their challenging journey. Merle Norman in Fairview Heights is a sweet refuge where simple things like wigs, turbans, sleep caps, makeup, eyebrows, eyelashes and skin care products can mean a difference in how a person undergoing treatment for cancer feels about herself. With over 150 wigs in stock in a broad range of colors, there is bound to be something for everyone. If a particular wig is not available in the store, Sabrina Fudge, owner, said she can get it within a week. The staff has received extensive training and education in the fit, and selection, of wigs to help customers make the best choice. “And if the wig is bought in the studio, I can tweak, cut or trim it to make it perfect for the customer,” said Fudge. Knowing how the skin changes for those going through

chemotherapy, Fudge has products to put moisture back into the skin such as Energizing Concentrate and Changing Skin Moisturizer along with the AntiRedness Line that produces calming effects. It may be necessary to change one’s foundation color or formula, blushes and lipsticks, too, and Merle Norman is there to lend a hand in making the transition easier. Many foundations and makeup items have moisturizers already in them. Of course Merle Norman has hydrating facials and masks to lend moisture to the skin as well.

Brooklynn McDade, Sabrina Fudge and Becky Lopez.

Eyebrows can be affected during treatment and “we can help you create a natural eyebrow appearance with our Brow Wow brow care, ” Fudge said. "While it's our sincerest wish that nobody should have to face cancer, we are here to help." Customers are invited to come in once a month for a free facial and consultation. BUSINESS PROFILES Long-time Pharmacy Offers Fast, Personalized Service

S

ituated on the corner of North Center and 159, Maryville Pharmacy has been an anchor in the community for nearly 38 years. In fact, when Registered Pharmacist Gary Ceretto first opened, he was one of the few businesses in the area. “We saw this area as having a huge potential for growth,” he said, noting that there were very few pharmacies in the vicinity for many years. Then the hospital added on, and business increased greatly.

by Diane Ceretto, a certified mastectomy fitter. “We are able to supply the most extensive collections of intimate items for women after breast surgery,” Ceretto said. “This includes many different breast prosthesis styles, partial prosthesis for use after lumpectomy or reconstruction, bras and swim wear.” Some of their exclusive services are natural hormone replacement, and human and veterinary compounding for doctors to choose a more precise medication for their patient. They are one of the few in the area that provides oxygen and CPAP supplies and also have a nice selection of diabetic shoes and compression stockings. The pharmacy offers convenient drive-through service, free local delivery and emergency after-hour care.

Ceretto graduated from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in May of 1976 and realized quickly that he wanted to own his own pharmacy: so quickly that he opened in December of the same year! The beauty of Maryville Pharmacy is the personalized, fast service each and every customer receives. “When it comes to our customers, we know that when it comes to healthcare, patients need more than just a filled prescription and usage advice. Our customers are friends and we can take care of their needs accordingly,” he said. Maryville Pharmacy also offers many health-related medical equipment and products including a unique mastectomy and lumpectomy boutique managed

Gary and his wife, Diane, are known for their community involvement and are members in area chambers.

Store hours are 9 am to 7 pm, Monday through Friday; 9 am to 2 pm Saturday; closed Sunday. Maryville Pharmacy is located in Maryville at 2700 N. Center, 618-288-7474 and 618-463-6974 (emergency number only); www.maryvillerx.com.

Expansion At Millstadt Pharmacy Will Include A Drive Thru

M

illstadt Pharmacy is in the midst of a big renovation project that will transform the building both inside and out. For 35 years the pharmacy has served Millstadt, and soon it will look like a new, modern pharmacy. Along with an upgraded look, the pharmacy will expand many of its sections and add a new drivethrough window to the pharmacy to enhance our customer service offering. Inside, many things are changing and moving around with the goal of maximizing the use of the store’s interior space. “All of this is being done so we can better serve our patients,” owner Todd Evers said. Evers is a well-known name for hometown pharmacies. Millstadt Pharmacy was originally opened by the Davinroy family, but since 2008, Evers has owned the store. He has also owned Dauber Pharmacy in Mascoutah since 2001, a location that’s served that city since 1853. Evers has owned many other pharmacies as well, and he’s applying that wealth of knowledge to the remodeling project in Millstadt.

The renovations will expand numerous popular sections of the store as well. The project is slated to finish by or around Thanksgiving, and it will bring customers an expanded gift section, an expanded card section, an expanded over-thecounter drug section and, most importantly, an expanded pharmacy. All of that will be accomplished without adding square footage to the building. Look for the announcement of the annual Holiday Open House once the renovations are complete. The drive-thru will likely be one of the new customer favorites, though regulars will find the pharmacy’s remodeling and expansions a great benefit to their shopping and pharmacy experiences. “We have been happy to work with the City of Millstadt to acquire and tear down an eyesore and build something to better serve the people of Millstadt,” Evers said.

Importantly, while the remodeling is under way the pharmacy will remain open so all customers can continue to use Millstadt Pharmacy as they always have. “We are working with our General Contractor, Miller and Maack, and their union and local sub-contractors to keep the pharmacy open during construction. We have been able to do that with our other remodeling projects and we will keep the pharmacy up and running the entire time.” Evers added.

Millstadt Pharmacy is located at 120 West Washington St. in Millstadt; (618) 476-1701; www.millstadtpharmacy.com.

THE NON-SURGICAL

MOMMY MAKEOVER BEFORE

The Mom Shuttle has revved its engine and begun its rounds – school, practices, recitals, doctor appointments, anything and everything kid related. While your child is trying on school clothes, do you study yourself in the department store mirror, reminiscing about how you looked pre-kid(s)? “My back side was a little more firm. My cheeks were a little higher. My face looked a lot more youthful!” That sounds like a laundry list of surgery, money and downtime, right? With a Non-Surgical Mommy Makeover, you can actually tighten, tone, trim and improve your body and skin without the risks, pain, and cost of surgery.

Voluma: Cheeks 2 Syringes BEFORE

With CoolSculpting, Moms everywhere are super COOL (or super HOT)! CoolSculpting, an FDA-cleared procedure, actually freezes stubborn fat. On average, the treatment is one hour and is performed in a medical office, not a hospital or surgical center. With CoolSculpting there isn’t any downtime or needles, just an applicator that is applied to the treatment area – such as inner and outer thighs, abdomen, and love handles. The applicator contains two cooling panels that literally freezes the fat, killing those cells which are then eliminated from the body. Botox and Fillers to the rescue! Make these marvelous procedures your BFFs. When done in a medical office, under the care of an artistic, precise Physician, Botox safely and quite easily helps to relax lines and wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyes and around the eyes. Dermal

AFTER

CoolSculpting

Fillers on the other hand are used to add volume to folds around the mouth (nasal labial folds) or enhance lost volume in the cheeks and lips. When these procedures are combined, which is referred to as a “Liquid Facelift,” they actually mimic the enhancements of a face lift in a natural, subtle way. When time is of the essence, Laser Hair Removal is a great option for those tenacious hairs or hard-to-reach areas. After 4-6 treatments you can be confident going out for the night in a cocktail dress, without the prep time of shaving or waxing. Popular treatment areas include underarms, chin and bikini – which can be treated in less than 45 minutes. Other than mild redness that typically resolves in a few hours, there isn’t any downtime. To enhance the skin you’ve ignored for years, choose from Chemical Peels or Microneedling. These procedures decrease hyperpigmentation and scarring while actually refining texture. In combination with a skin care regimen you will see remarkable results!

Diabetes Awareness Month Q & A with Dr. Michael Mandis

D

r. Michael Mandis is an internist specializing in diabetes and hypertension. His new office is located southeast of Anderson Hospital and is currently welcoming new patients. They also accept most insurances. To promote Diabetes Awareness Month, Dr. Mandis hopes to educate the public on the particulars of diabetes:

called impaired glucose tolerance, a person’s blood sugar levels are slightly higher than the normal range, but not high enough for a true diagnosis of diabetes. People with prediabetes have a significant risk of developing full-blown diabetes.

What is Diabetes?

Yes! Diabetes prevention is proven, possible and powerful! Studies show that people at high risk for diabetes can prevent or delay the onset of the disease by losing 5 to 7 percent of their weight, which translates to 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person.

Nearly 30 million Americans have diabetes, a serious disease in which blood glucose (blood sugar) levels are above normal.

What are a few factors that can increase your risk for Diabetes? Age: 45 years or older; being overweight; having a family history of diabetes; having diabetes while pregnant (gestational diabetes); having elevated blood pressure; having abnormal cholesterol; being inactive.

What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is when your body doesn’t use insulin properly. In type 2 diabetes some people are insulin resistant, meaning that their body produces a lot of insulin but doesn’t use it effectively. Some people with type 2 diabetes don’t produce enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes is different from type 1 diabetes because in type 1 diabetes your body doesn’t produce any insulin at all.

Is there anything I can do to prevent Diabetes?

Two Keys To Success:

• Get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity 5 days a week. • Eat a variety of foods that are low in fat and reduce the number of calories you eat per day. To schedule an appointment or a diabetes screening, please call (618) 288-6136. The office is located at 2236 Vadalabene Dr., Suite 2 in Maryville just behind Anderson Hospital.

Can Diabetes cause problems?

Yes! Diabetes can lead to serious problems such as heart disease, stroke, vision loss, kidney disease and nerve damage. One out of four people do not know they have diabetes until they are faced with problems such as blurry vision or heart trouble. That’s why you need to know if you are at risk for diabetes.

What is Pre-Diabetes?

About 41 million Americans between the ages of 40 and 74 have pre-diabetes. Prediabetes is a condition that, as the name implies, can be considered an early, potentially reversible stage in the development of type 2 diabetes. In pre-diabetes, sometimes

FRUSTRATED WITH REPORT CARDS?

W

hether your child works very hard and still gets a poor report card, or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help. When a child complains that he can’t see the board, your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign to schedule an eye exam. Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently, it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an “auditory learner?” These are signs of a vision problem.

• Problems with tracking • Poor comprehension and attention span • Loses place while reading • Points to words while reading • Avoids close work such as reading • Reverses letters or words in reading and writing • Homework takes FOREVER when it shouldn’t

If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success. For more information visit: www.readingandvision.com or call 618-667-2020.

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading? • Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD? • Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious symptoms which indicates a child could have a vision problem, including:

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning

problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a

Crosspoint Church Opens New Location In O’Fallon

C

rosspoint Church, a thriving multi-generational church in South County, is reaching out to the Metro East with a new location at Central Elementary in O’Fallon on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Offering a passionate, life-giving environment where people of all ages, races and backgrounds are welcome, Crosspoint is a non-denominational church with a history dating back to 1953. Having grown from 25 followers then to 1,600 each Sunday in 2014, the church is ready to spread its wings and take flight. “We are one church with multiple locations,” said Associate Pastor David Verret who will be the O'Fallon campus pastor. “Worship services contain passionate, meaningful praise and practical teaching from the Bible. We have trained, capable staff that provide incredible ministry to babies and kids at each service so that people of every age can experience God and get to know Him better.” Three of four Sundays, the O’Fallon location will have live services with the message brought in via streaming video from the South County campus. Verret will speak at the fourth worship service. He joined the pastoral staff of Crosspoint in May of 2000. As Associate Pastor, his role is to oversee the Administrative office, legal affairs (he also has a Juris Doctor degree from Saint Louis University) and all teams involved in the planning of adult church services. Verret, and his wife Ronda have been involved in various aspects of volunteer ministry at Crosspoint since 1990. “Crosspoint members are fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ and everything we do reflects that mission,” Verret said. “We like to focus on the needs of the community: feed the hungry, help underprivileged children and help families with their commitment to each other. All are welcome and we hope our congregation reflects the diversity of the area.” Crosspoint also has many volunteers that reach out to the local community – “wherever we can help.”

The church offers many programs and classes for all ages including children, students, couples and more. Sunday Night Life Groups are an exciting way for people to meet others at the church. Meeting mostly in homes, but sometimes coffee shops or offices across the area, Sunday Night Life (SNL) provides a relaxing environment for people to engage in meaningful relationships by “doing life together. Visit Crosspoint at Central Elementary, 309 Hartman Lane in O’Fallon. Please call (314) 892-5051 for more information.

Lead Pastor Shawn Craig

Shawn Craig is the Lead Pastor of Crosspoint Church where he has ministered for more than 30 years in various roles of music ministry, worship leading and Bible teaching. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Webster University in St. Louis and completed graduate work at Fuller Seminary, Kings Seminary and Oral Roberts University. Craig is also the middle name in Phillips, Craig and Dean (PCD), one of the most popular contemporary Christian music groups today. A prolific songwriter, he has had many of his songs recorded and has received multiple Dove awards, including the 1994 Song of the Year “In Christ Alone.” He is also author of a daily devotional book entitled “Between Sundays.” Craig’s wife, Becki, serves with him and leads Crosspoint Women.

Jumbo's manufacturer, Harrison Machine Works, was founded in 1848, and operated in Belleville for over a century, turning out threshers and steam engines. An Indiana farmer owned Jumbo until 1930. It was then acquired by the Ford Museum, where it was displayed until “Jumbo's Keepers,” led by Mike Hutsch, brought the machine back to Belleville in 2001. Jumbo’s Keepers set about restoring it to a safe and sound condition and it is now thrilling spectators at the museum, steam shows and parades.

Belleville Philharmonic Orchestra The “Stars of Tomorrow“ concert series continues to be one of the Belleville Philharmonic Orchestra’s oldest traditions: that of rewarding the talent and dedication of young musical artists. “Many of our former winners have gone on to college with major scholarships and some have gone on to professional careers as artists and teachers,” said Conductor Robert Howard. “One of our current winners, Jason Pan, is the student of Kris Pineda, who was a former ‘Stars of Tomorrow’ competition winner.” The three young soloists competed last April 2014 to earn the opportunity to perform a concerto movement with the orchestra. Rich Qian and Jason Pan are both junior high students and Kentaro Umemori is a high school student.

Kicks Off The Season On October 18 With The "Stars of Tomorrow" Concert Concerto for violin and orchestra by Dmitri Kabalevsky (first movement): Rich Qian, violin. Concerto for clarinet and orchestra by Carl Maria von Weber (3rd Movement): Kentaro Umemori, clarinetist. Concerto No. 3 for piano and orchestra by Dmitri Kabalevsky (first movement): Jason Pan, pianist.

ALLERGIES

“It has been my joy and privilege to serve as the conductor of the Belleville Philharmonic Orchestra since 1995 and Chorale since 2003, Howard said. “I love the historical role that the orchestra has played since it first took the stage in 1867. I also enjoy the fact that members of the orchestra are volunteers from the community although many have college degrees on their instruments, and many are present or former teachers in area schools. All of us are glad to be imbedded in the Belleville culture and history; and we enjoy playing for community events.

Symphony No. 4 in G Major by Antonin Dvorak. “This cheerful ‘Eighth Symphony’ is the composer’s most popular symphony following his ‘New World Symphony,’ Howard said. Its appealing melodies and bright orchestra stem from the folk traditions of Dvorak’s Czechoslovakian heritage.
