For the Best Lumber in the Region - Come to Fischer Lumber

F

ischer Lumber Company is a family-owned business that has been serving the Metro-East since 1941 as a full-service, locallyowned lumberyard. Over the past 78 years, the company has more than tripled in size and expanded its business all over the St. Louis metro area. Since the company’s founding, its services and products have advanced to fit the evolving needs of contractors and consumers alike. Today, Fischer Lumber is known for kitchen and bath design, custom roof truss orders, regional delivery service, and a full selection of windows, doors, roofing shingles, decking and more. Located on North Shamrock Street in East Alton, Ill., Fischer Lumber boasts a 10,000-square-foot warehouse stocked full of the best lumber in the region. Although they are a lumberyard 80 percent focused on contractors, Fischer Lumber still serves a variety of other customers, from government agencies, small businesses, hospitals, churches, factories and individual trade. The company strives for excellence in serving all of its customers and their individual lumber needs. This service includes deliveries within a 60-mile radius, which makes for a good amount of business on both sides of the river. While Fischer Lumber is known for its lumber, more and more customers are coming in for affordable building supplies and materials for their next project. The experienced staff is available to assist with kitchen and bath designs, lumber takeoffs, and estimates if clients bring in blueprints. In addition to being deemed a full-service lumberyard, the company now considers itself a full-service stop for all building projects. Whether seeking cabinets, windows, millwork or roof trusses, they have it.

Fischer Lumber also supplies materials for residential and light commercial projects, offering a line of quality products including Marvin new construction and replacement windows, Hörmann garage doors, Larson storm doors, Vytec Prestige vinyl siding, GAF shingles, and Bertch, Timberlake and Holiday cabinetry. The company expanded even further in 2012 when it opened Fischer Window and Door in Brentwood, Mo. This location serves as a full-service Marvin Window and Door distributor, boasting the most inclusive display of Marvin Window and Door products in the St. Louis area. Marvin Window and Door is unique in that it specializes in offering products that are built around the customer's ideas. All products feature countless opportunities for customization and a variety of design options. With over 160 years of combined industry experience, the staff at Fischer Window and Door has the knowledge and know-how to help clients find the right product for their project at the right cost, whether it be residential, new construction or commercial. It is with great pride that this family-owned business has grown and succeeded not just in East Alton, but across the river as well. As a testament to the company’s longstanding success, much of the staff has been with the Fischer’s for over 30 years, demonstrating their level of commitment to superior customer service and thriving excellence in the industry. For more information about Fischer Lumber or for help with a building/remodel project, stop by the showroom at 210 N. Shamrock Street, East Alton, Ill.; visit www.fischerlumber.com; or call (618) 259-7434.

Hearthside Predicts That Homeowners Will Love A Brand New Fireplace This Cold Winter

S

t. Louis weather and cold temperatures can surprise homeowners anytime between October to March and this year will be no exception. In fact, "The Old Farmers Almanac" 2019-2020 predicts: "Winter temperatures will be below normal, on average, with above-normal snowfall and slightly above normal precipitation. The coldest periods will be in early to mid-January, early and mid-February, and early March. The snowiest periods will be in early to mid-December, early to mid-January, and mid-February."

to 1936 in the downtown Belleville area. Founders A.J. and Martha Urban first opened as a butane retailer, which at that time was the “new” energy fuel for cooking and heating. They had customers from Chicago all the way to Cairo. The business thrived as the Urbans established a reputation for dependability and service throughout the state and in the early 1950s, the company moved to its present location on South Belt East near Belle-Clair Fairgrounds. As the market and technology changed, so did Midwestern Propane Gas Company. In the 1960s, sales of gas grills and gas logs were added to their services and by the mid-1980s, demand for high-quality leisure products grew exponentially and Hearthside Grill and Fireplace, Ltd. was born in 2000.

Just in time is Hearthside's special offer to receive a FREE VENT KIT with the purchase of a Quadra-Fire Gas Direct Vent Insert during the month of October ($529 value).

WHY GAS?

It's Convenient. Gas inserts are the easiest way to heat because it pairs the warmth and ambiance of a traditional wood-burning fireplace with the benefits and convenience of modern technology such as turning on the fire with a push of a remote control button. It's Economical: Lower overall energy bills by 20 to 40 percent by turning the furnace down and the new gas insert on. It's easy to heat the space to the desired temperature and where the most time is spent. Why An Insert? Quadra-Fire gas inserts provide an instant upgrade to any hearth, designed to be retrofitted into an existing wood-burning fireplace. Inserts instantly transform a drafty old fireplace into a powerful, efficient and clean burning heat source. Hearthside Grill and Fireplace, with a gorgeous showroom in Belleville, has a HUGE selection to choose from including gas as well as wood-burning and electric fireplaces. "We are proud to represent the top brands: Empire, Heatilator, Quadra-Fire, Vermont Castings, Monessen, Golden Blount, Jotul, Dimplex and Simplifier," said owner Mark Urban. Hearthside has a full-time employed staff of installers that are factory trained and certified by their manufacturing partners with a combined experience of 60-plus years! Midwestern Propane Gas Co. is a long-time business in Belleville dating all the way back

Taking over ownership from his uncles Darrell and Don Urban, who were the third generation owners of the company, Mark Urban said the charming fireplace and grill showroom highlights all the different products for which they are well-known. The showroom also showcases all manner of grilling accessories for the outdoor chef in your life: tool sets, rubs, sauces, gloves, gift sets, cookbooks, grill gadgets, aprons, thermometers and so much more. Of course there are gift certificates available. Please visit the showroom at 418 South Belt East, just east of the Belleville fairgrounds 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Call for an appointment at (618) 257-0700 or walk in! Hearthside is also online at hearthsidegrill.com, Facebook, Twitter, tumblr and Pinterest.

Receive a FREE VENT KIT with the purchase of a Quadra-Fire® Gas Direct Vent Insert during the month of October at Hearthside ($529 value).

Fence And Deck Depot Modernizes

To Enhance The Customer And Employee Experience

W

hile noting his first year anniversary as owner of the well-established Fence and Deck Depot, Sean Nesbit said he and his 50 employees have accomplished so much together as a team. "A goal of mine was to really modernize the business which includes not only enhancing the customer experience, but also the employee experience by empowering our employees and establishing a corporate culture based on defined company values."

technology in this area. We’re also making communications with our customers easier by using technology. Consumers are very busy, so using email and texting is much more preferred by many consumers today. We still like the personal touch of a phone call and face-to-face interactions, but we also are doing a better job of making it easier for our customers to do business with us. In 2020, we have additional plans to use technology that’s going to enhance the customer experience even more.”

These company values guide the company’s actions and decisions. “Treat others as you want to be treated. Do it right the first time. Do the right thing. Do what you say you’re going to do. We’ll reinforce our reputation in the marketplace by consistently executing on those values,” said Nesbit.

Again through technology, Nesbit said they proactively seek reviews of projects that are completed for each customer. "For so long, we had been doing all of this through paper surveys, but no one mails those back anymore let alone takes the time to fill something out manually. Today we collect customer reviews through email and mobile messaging, and then truly study the feedback."

For employees, Nesbit changed the employee benefit package to increase vacation time and to provide a chance to pay health premiums as a pre-tax expense thus providing more after-tax dollars. There have also been promotions and new job choices for new and long-time employees. "We have a young man who installed fences for multiple years and he earned an opportunity to move into sales, and is doing a fantastic job," he said. "His expertise is very credible and he treats people like he wants to be treated. Another young man has stepped into a role on an interim basis and shown that he's up to challenging himself and getting out of his comfort zone. It's been fun to watch our company grow, but more fun to see people step up and take advantage of these career opportunities." The company is growing and on the lookout for people who want to join their team while embracing the company’s values. Focusing on the customer's overall experience rather than just satisfaction has been another goal and technology has been put to good use. "Beginning in January we began using mobile credit card readers; we were way behind the times not using

It's also much easier to research Fence and Deck Depot with active Facebook and Instagram pages that display continuous photos of projects in progress or after completion. Their following on Facebook and Instagram is going well and it continues to grow. The web site has also been updated to collect operating data and statistics that had never been collected before - "this allow us to make better business decisions." Nesbit said. The company’s Better Business Bureau web page has more reviews than it’s ever had. "I’m excited about where we’ve come and where we’re going," he said. "And I think the Fence and Deck Depot team is excited, too: All of which creates a great customer experience." Call for a FREE estimate (618) 663-4675 and visit www.fencedepotco.com. In addition, Fence and Deck Depot has a location in O’Fallon, Ill., at 1202 Paragon Drive. The company is a member of the American Fence Association, HBA of Southern Illinois and the HBA of St. Louis among other related associations.

Eye Doctor Helps Legally Blind To See High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again

F

or many patients with macular degeneration and other visionrelated conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last strongholds of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions.

mology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months.

Some patients consider Dr. Marianne McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specialize in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases.

Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel.

Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence of someone with vision loss. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver's vision test.

While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disease, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors.

"Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but much more precise." To learn more about the bioptic telescopes or to schedule a consultation, give the office of Dr. Marianne McDaniel a call at (618) 566-8899 and visit mascoutaheyecare.com. The office is located at 100 East Main Street in Mascoutah.

Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC OphthalMarketplace Magazine | Fall Issue 2019 | marketplacemagazineonline.com | 17

How to erase brown spots with revitalizing skin products: Lytera 2.0 Advanced Pigment Correcting Serum is formulated to address the appearance of stubborn skin discoloration. It is appropriate for all skin types and tones, and improvements can be seen in as early as two weeks with progressively dramatic results at 12 weeks and beyond. Ooh La La also offers Lytera 2.0 in a six-step skin care regimen for even better results. It includes an exfoliating cleanser, correcting serum and repairing sunscreen that fades the appearance of hyperpigmentation and prevents its reoccurrence. LUMIVIVE Day Damage Defense Serum protects skin against blue light aggressors during the day while its Night Revitalize Repair Complex repairs damage while sleeping. The result - a more radiant, even skin tone within just 14 days. Even Up Clinical Pigment Perfector Sunscreen: This lightly tinted physical sunscreen, without harmful chemicals, diminishes brown spots while the iron oxide-infused mineral perfector diffuses skin discoloration. Even Up can, and should, replace make up because it is healthy for the skin. It is a 3-in-1 product that prevents, protects and treats brown spots on the face. "I wear this every day as my makeup - it's a MUST for everyone even if you don’t have brown spots," she said.

experts can deliver better results over restorative products alone. SkinMedica chemical peels: Get a fresh, healthy glow and an even complexion with an exfoliating chemical peel. While peels are available in different strengths, SkinMedica’s Rejuvenize Peel™ penetrates deep into the epidermis to shed away the top layer of older skin and the pigment imperfections that come with it, leaving a healthier, more uniform appearance behind. Microneedling: Ooh La La's MicroPen creates tiny, painless punctures in the skin that trigger the body’s natural healing process. In response to these superficial wounds, the body increases the production of collagen: the building block of healthy skin. Cell turnover following a collagen induction therapy procedure produces younger skin free from dark spots and discoloration. Laser Genesis: In some cases, hyperpigmentation can be reduced with heat. Using targeted light, Laser Genesis therapy gently warms the upper dermis of the skin to promote collagen regrowth, open dilated capillaries to reduce redness, and resurface the skin for improved tone and texture. Completely non-invasive and virtually painless, Laser Genesis treatment is relaxing for most patients. LimeLight – The LimeLight skin rejuvenating facial is specifically designed to address dark spots, sun damage and redness. LimeLight delivers a repeated pulse of light that heats up and destroys hyperpigmented skin cells. After one or two weeks, the dark spots flake off and discoloration begins to fade. LimeLight can be combined with chemical peels and multiple other procedures for maximum results. Hydrafacial – Hydrafacial can improve a number of common skin concerns including age spots and hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, dull dry and dehydrated skin, oily, congested skin and acne. There is absolutely no downtime with this treatment!

Customized cosmetic procedures to reverse sun damage After a lifetime of sun exposure, brown spots may become especially dark or they will have begun creeping across the face, chest and hands. In these cases, a cosmetic procedure performed by

ooking back on a fun summer and looking forward to cooler weather outdoor activities, the skin has kept a "well-worn" scrapbook of all those trips to the pool or lake via brown spots. While in most cases this discoloration is harmless, these brown spots immediately make people appear older. Now is the perfect time to talk with Dr. Kristen Jacobs at Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness about the best treatments for those facial brown spots - and keep them from becoming an unwanted souvenir on the next summer trip. Dr. Jacobs believes that good skin care is the beginning point for healthy skin. “We recommend starting with scientifically based products with proven results that actually change the physiology of your skin no matter what treatment you choose," she said. "A quality skin care regimen improves the skin’s health and maximizes treatment results. We believe in delivering results so we monitor your skin’s changes with before and after photos because

REPORT CARD FRUSTRATION?

W

hether your child works very hard and still gets a poor report card, or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eye Care may be able to help. When a child complains that he can’t see the board, your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign to schedule an eye exam.

• Problems with tracking • Poor comprehension and attention span • Loses place while reading • Points to words while reading • Avoids close work such as reading • Reverses letters or words in reading and writing • Homework takes FOREVER when it shouldn’t

If your child has any of these issues, he or she may have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with academic success. For more information on vision and learning, please call (618) 667-2020.

Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently, it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an “auditory learner?” These are signs of a vision problem. The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the most obvious symptoms which indicates a child could have a vision problem, including:

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%

correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Helping To Provide

For A Family Member With Special Needs

F

amilies who have a family member with a disability or a special need know the concerns they face as they consider how to care for their disabled family member. This is especially true when the disabled person is limited on the amount of assets the individual may have in order to qualify for governmental programs. In 2014, Congress enacted the Achieving a Better Life Experience Act (“ABLE Act”), which makes is a little easier to provide funds for the care of a disabled individual. The ABLE ACT allows states to establish programs to administer tax-advantaged savings accounts for disabled persons. Most importantly, ABLE accounts are exempted from federal income tax and do not impede beneficiaries’ ability to receive public benefits. To be eligible as a beneficiary of an ABLE account, an individual must fall under one of two categories: 1) Individuals who are entitled to supplemental security income benefits based on blindness or disability that began before the age of 26, or 2) individuals with a disability certification filed with the state secretary. An eligible individual may only be the beneficiary of one ABLE account. There are multiple requirements for an ABLE account: contributions to an ABLE account must be in cash, the account may only hold cash, the maximum amount that may be deposited into an ABLE account each year is the per donee gift-tax exclusion for that year (being $15,000 in 2019), and an ABLE account is only allowed to hold a maximum of $100,000; any amount over that counts towards the beneficiary’s resources. While the limitations on ABLE accounts may not make the accounts appropriate for all individuals, such accounts can be important to allow a disabled individual to receive gifts or other money without causing a reduction and elimination of the public benefits being received. To speak with an experienced attorney, contact MM&R in Belleville at (618) 234-9800 or Edwardsville at (618) 656-2244.

West End Boutique Going Strong For 43 Years

V

isitors have flocked from far and wide to shop at Don Rodgers Ltd. for over 43 years now. “Time has really flown and I am grateful to my customers who come from as far away as the Illinois communities of Edwardsville, Lebanon, O'Fallon and Alton; or from St. Charles and St. Peters, South and West Counties, and even Cape Girardeau," owner Roger Wigginton said.

LifestyLe AppAreL for Men & WoMen since 1976

“Really, we are the last fashion boutique in the area that offers women’s and men’s merchandise,”Wigginton said. “Nobody has my look at my price! The things we carry here will never be found in a shopping mall. Consequently, our customers love that uniqueness and the very competitive prices. I keep my overhead down and pass that savings on to you.” Known as the “jacket capital of the Midwest,” shoppers can choose from tons of different styles to wear with a dressy pant or skirt, or even jeans. Don’t wait too long when the new season’s items are placed on the shelves – they will likely be gone by the end of the week. Don Rodgers Ltd. has been an anchor in the West End of Belleville not only as a successful retail business but also as a champion for the community. Always “in-the-know,” Wigginton has made it a life-long mission to be involved in making the West End a wonderful place to live, work and shop. Even though he still works six days a week at Don Rodgers, he finds the time to be involved in the City as the Alderman of his ward and is the co-chairperson of the West Belleville Promotional Committee among many other committees. “The Car Guy" Explains The

Perfect Time For An Appraisal

S

teven Paul, “The Car Guy” and the owner of Test Drive Technologies Mobile Vehicle Inspection and Appraisal Services, cannot stress enough how important it is to have "your pride and joy," meaning a valuable vehicle, appraised in case of some unforeseen accident, act of God or fire. “The perfect time for an appraisal is right after you get it all cleaned up for winter storage," Paul said. "Also, with the prediction of a potential recession in sight, you'll want to get that appraisal on file now so the collector car value doesn't take a hit. You need to have that document on file with your insurance company so you are protected because you just never know what the future may bring,” he said. “And without that document you will not receive fair market value."

Certified & Fully Insured

Proudly Serving St. Louis Major Metro for 10 years With 25+ Years Experience As winter approaches and your car is ready for hibernation, consider having it appraised and your insurance adjusted; knowing the true replacement value and having it on file with your insurance carrier is the only way to protect your investment.

Having a vehicle appraised is very similar to that of having real estate appraised in which there are several steps that must be taken, items which must be explained and of course proper methodology followed during the appraisal calculations. The USPAP or Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice outlines these standards very well for every appraiser to follow. Unfortunately there is no federal or even state requirement in many areas that require an auto or vehicle appraiser to retain a license or even a certification unlike real estate appraisers and insurance adjusters. Paul, a Veteran of the U.S. Army, is certified through the ASCAA, American Society of Automobile Appraisers and all of their reports follow the USPAP guidelines and methodology in order to be accepted and approved by insurance companies, financial institutions as well as the court of law. TDT provides mobile vehicle inspection and appraisal services to St. Louis Major Metro Area including Southern Illinois. TDT also provides inspection and appraisal services to Chicago, Kansas City, Springfield and South Eastern Missouri.

Dry Eye Disease Is A Common, Treatable Condition

D

ry eyes are a part of the natural aging process. In fact, the majority of people over age 65 experience symptoms of Dry Eye. Patients are advised to seek treatment if they have any of the symptoms below:

• Blurry Vision • Redness • Burning • Itching • Light Sensitivity • Excessive Tearing/Watery Eyes • Tired Eyes/Eye Fatigue • Stringy Mucous in or around the eyes • Foreign Body Sensation • Contact Lens Discomfort • Scratchy feeling or Sand/Grit in eye

People that have Dry Eye Disease either do not produce enough tears or their tears are of such poor quality that they cannot lubricate and nourish the eye effectively. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front of the surface of the eye and for providing clear vision. Tears also provide lubrication, which reduces the risk of eye infection, washes away foreign matter in the eye and keeps the eyes smooth and clear. Dry Eye Disease can easily interfere with work and normal life activities if not treated.

Factors that lead to Dry Eye Disease can include age, medications, refractive eye surgery, long-term use of contact lenses and medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, thyroid problems and inflammation of the eyelids. Other factors can also be associated with doing every day tasks like staring at computer screens, televisions or electronic readers for long periods of time. In addition, things like exposure to air conditioning, wind, smoke and dry climates contribute to Dry Eye. Untreated Dry Eye Disease can lead to permanent damage to the lids, eye and vision. However, the good news is that by properly diagnosing the type of Dry Eye Disease early on there are successful treatments including supplements, warm compresses, lid cleansers and drops to name a few. Drs. Thomas and Alice Unger in Troy, Ill., have the technology to provide patients with a comprehensive eye exam to evaluate, test and treat Dry Eye Disease. Call Unger Eye Care today to make an appointment at (618) 667-2020.

There IS Help For Dry Eye Disease Don’t Let It Slow You Down! Most adults over the age of 65 will experience at least one or all of the following symptoms: • Blurry Vision and Light Sensitivity • Redness • Burning and Itching • Excessive Tearing/Watery Eyes Unger Eye Care can provide treatment at the conveniently located office at 534 Edwardsville Road in Troy, Ill.
