MUELLER FURNITURE Celebrates 93 Years In Business

M

ueller Furniture has been an anchor in the community at 1004 East Main Street in Belleville for 93 years. Now owned and operated by the third and fourth generations, the store is enjoying its best years in history not only with the expansion of the original store, but to the very successful second location in Lake Saint Louis, Mo. and now to a third store in Ellisville, Mo. set to open in February, 2021. “Yes we have the new locations now, but our home base is Belleville where we have appreciated the community’s support since 1927,” said Mark Mueller, general manager. While longevity is certainly important, Mueller and his father, Lynwood Mueller, president, believe the things that differentiates their store from others are their true keys to success: high-quality American-made furniture, excellent customer service, personal business relationships and competitive pricing. As a family-owned business, it is important to the Muellers to work with family-owned furniture suppliers around the country. “We think about our business in terms of relationships rather than transactions,”Mark Mueller said. "We encourage our customers to use us as their personal resource for anything furniture and mattress related." “The furniture industry is interesting because there is no bottom to how cheap the product can be,” he continued. “But at the lowest price, the value is horrible. The bad taste left behind by poor quality outlasts the sweet taste of a low price.” Mueller customers understand this concept. “Our prices are competitive and a customer is not going to get bombarded by five salespeople when they walk in – we have a welltrained staff with great overall knowledge of anything furniture or mattress related." In recent years, the offerings at Mueller have gravitated toward Amish and Men-

nonite American-made companies because “they have a higher quality and provide more customization choices rather than brands like Broyhill and Thomasville that mass produce every piece leaving the customer with no choices,” he said. Customization allows the customer to match or complement other pieces or features in their home without completely replacing everything. “For example, if you love your dining room table but need new chairs – we can do that no problem.” Mueller Furniture’s newest furniture addition is Smith Brothers of Berne, Ind. Crafted in the Swiss-Amish tradition since 1926, Smith Brothers is a brand customers have enjoyed for generations. “They craft the highest quality reclining furniture we’ve ever had and their non-reclining furniture is great, too," Mueller said. "They are a family-owned company and the owner has an engineering background so he put that to good use when designing their sofas and recliners. What the customer gets is a longer lasting product that has superior tailoring, ergonomic design and comfort.” An interesting point to make about buying American-made furniture is the lowcarbon footprint it leaves. "The Amish furniture craftsmen only use solid cherry, oak, maple, hickory or elm wood that is grown in the Northern United States. They build the furniture, finish it and ship directly to us. It's a much smaller carbon footprint than imported furniture produced in factories without environmental regulations." Visit the anchor store at 1004 East Main Street in Belleville, (618) 233-0667 and the Lake Saint Louis store at 9 Fountain Grass Drive, (636) 234-3361; www.MuellerFurniture.com.

on Burgmann founded the Burgmann Insurance Group 10 years ago. Soon after starting, he saw the need and opportunity to provide expertise in the healthcare market. His passion for helping people grew from family experiences like taking care of his grandmother, Kathleen, during his teen years and then supporting his mother, Kay, after his father’s passing through the last few years of her life. Burgmann’s caring nature has been especially helpful in his insurance business when encountering clients who’ve been taken advantage of in the past. He sees this as an injustice and works to rectify it. For example, J.P. was referred to Burgmann by one of his clients. Unfortunately, she had gotten some bad advice and missed her initial enrollment in Medicare. Since she didn’t have group health coverage her enrollment in Medicare was delayed. Now she will pay a Medicare premium penalty every month for the rest of her life, but Burgmann was able to help her with a Medicare Supplement to protect her from medical bankruptcy and gain peace of mind about her health care. Burgmann aims to help everyone avoid issues like this as they approach 65 and must make a Medicare health decision.

Eye Doctor Helps Legally Blind To See

F

High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again

or many patients with macular degeneration and other vision-related conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last bastion of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions.

Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC Ophthalmology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disease, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors.

Some patients consider Dr. Marianne McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specializes in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases.

Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel.

Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence to whom once had it. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver's vision test.

"Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but more precise." To learn more about the bioptic telescopes or to schedule a consultation, give the office of Dr. Marianne McDaniel a call at (618) 566-8899 and visit www.mascoutaheyecare.com. The office is located at 100 East Main Street in Mascoutah.

A Howl’oween Good Time

Get Costume Ready For The Pet Photo Contest Benefiting the BAHS and to measure the dog. Try not to go by the breeds listed, because your dog might be larger or smaller than the breed the writer of the description had in mind. • Material. Pay attention to the weather forecast and know how your dog handles different materials. If it’s going to be warm and your pet has thick fur, then you will probably not want to purchase a fleece costume. On the other hand, if it’s going to be chilly and you have a small dog with very short hair, a thin polyester costume will not keep him/her warm enough.

I

t’s nearly Halloween and as much as humans love dressing up, dressing up the family pet is just as fun. PureCostumes.com had some really great looking costumes this year such as The Incredibles, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Despicable Me - Gru and the Minions, Toy Story Characters, Aladdin characters - Genie and Abu, Dumbo and Olaf.

• Fasteners. If the costume needs to be fastened, look to see how it stays together. A very active dog might be able to easily remove a costume that has only one hook-and-loop fastener. In that case, a costume that has several fasteners or perhaps snaps instead of Velcro might be a better option.

Important Features to Consider If purchasing a dog costume, there are some important features to keep in mind.

• Comfort. Does the dog hate wearing hoods? Does he/ she have very short fur, which might make a frilly costume rub his/her skin uncomfortably? Keep the dog’s comfort in mind and choose a costume that is soft and doesn’t contain features that the dog dislikes.

• Size and fit. Read through the description of each item to see how it fits. It is important to find the sizing instructions
