5th Annual Christkindlmarkt Set To Open With Free Concert By Dogs of Society - Elton John Tribute Band

he Belleville Christkindlmarkt Committee, under the Belleville Cultural Enrichment Organization, is excited to announce the fifth annual Christkindlmarkt: An authentic German Christmas Market set around the southeast and northeast corners of scenic Public Square daily from Nov. 23 through Dec. 23. After the huge success of the first four Christkindlmarkts, Belleville's own "Christmas Carole," Director Carole Piontkowsky, said, “It's hard to believe we are in our fifth year. Each year grows with new and returning visitors," she said. "The Christkindlmarkt has become a fixture in Belleville and around the St. Louis area. This year we wanted to provide more free events so those visiting family and friends will be enticed to come downtown and see all that Belleville has to offer." A new family event near Santa's house on the weekends is the showing of family-friendly movies courtesy of the Lincoln Theatre and Belleville Parks and Recreation. Check these activities and other entertainment schedules on the web site. In a nod to Belleville’s rich German heritage, the Christkindlmarkt features European vendors, German food such as cookies and cakes, and beverages like the traditional Gluhwein, which is a warm spiced wine served in a souvenir mug. Attendees this year will find the same number of vendors, yet, there will be many new vendors coming and going every week. Holiday Events At The Missouri Botanical Garden, Butterfly House And Shaw Nature Reserve November 17-January 1. Garden Glow. The Garden’s Sixth Annual Garden Glow presented by Wells Fargo Advisors runs nightly from November 17 to January 1. Hours are 5 to 10 p.m. with last entry at 9 p.m. The expanded event features more than 1 million lights, photo opportunities, food, drinks and music. New this year, visitors will encounter a 24-foot pixelated tree in Spoehrer Plaza when they enter the Garden. Glow will also have a new interactive area where visitors can “play” flower xylophones while the lighting changes with the beat they play. Santa will visit Garden Glow from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights November 26 through December 13. Ticket prices vary by date, and range from $3 to $18. Stop by the holiday flower and train show, which will celebrate the History of Flower Shows at the Garden. The Garden’s model trains will surround garden-scale groupings of building models and landscapes, depicting a view of four seasons. The University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program trains adult volunteers who assist on many local projects. Master Gardeners grow produce for area food pantries, maintain demonstration gardens, and teach educational workshops for youth and adults. Classroom and online training is available. Classroom sessions are on Tuesdays, January 15 through April 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Online training is conducted January through April, and participants work at their own pace.
