Makes Its Debut In Familiar Fairview Location
T
wo years after purchasing a familiar landscaping company in Fairview Heights, owners Josh Martie and Dan Fieker are pleased to introduce Creative Landscapes. “We decided to make a fresh start with the same great quality and better prices than previously offered at Scott’s,” Martie said. Creative Landscapes is still in the same convenient location as Scott’s with beautifully landscaped grounds, but with a wider selection of gardening and landscaping supplies so they can truly say they are a one-stop-shop for all exterior landscaping needs. The new logo really says a lot about the new branding with a sophisticated, yet clean, modern design. Customers will always be able to count on that same great staff and top-notch customer service, and they have already added a few things like fencing and concrete work which is a natural extension of what the company has always provided. At the moment, Martie is installing a patio complete with a pizza oven and outdoor grill to use during their planned charity-minded special events throughout the year. In fact, the first event is going on right now through the month of March to raise donations for the O’Fallon Food Pantry. “For every canned food item you bring in to donate, we will give you $1 off your purchase,” Martie said. Working for Scott’s the 12 years before owning it, Martie knows every aspect of the business. He began as a landscape laborer and worked his way up establishing core relationships with customers along the way. “I try to visit with our clients at least three times per year: spring, summer and fall,” he said. He also obtained an education in horticulture at Southwestern Illinois College.
Discussing trends in their business, the two co-owners think more people are staying put in their current homes and rehabbing things they want to change, and the “back-yard” vacation is becoming even more popular. Of course the economy plays a role in this trend, but Fieker also thinks cable television shows for do-ityourselfers give people the ideas and motivation to start a project but they know they need help from a professional. “That’s where we step in with professionally designed landscaping including the plants and trees, patios, outdoor fireplaces, water features, sprinkler systems, exterior lighting and now fencing,” Fieker said. “We are a one-stop-shop – that’s really our strength and that’s what makes us different from the guy in a truck.” Technology also plays a large role at Creative Landscapes. With their gorgeous computer image design programs, customers can walk into the consulting room and literally see their own home on a huge monitor with new landscaping around it. “They don’t have to visualize anything – it’s right there and we have the ability to move things around,” Martie said. Garden center plans also include vegetables, herbs and heirloom plants, which have been “growing” more popular every season. “We hope to install a greenhouse off of the main building soon,” Martie said. “Then we can have plants to offer year-round.” Creative Landscapes is located in Fairview Heights on Old Collinsville Road just minutes from St. Clair Square: 5515 Old Collinsville Road; (618) 6329338; www.stlcreativelandscapes.com.

Lawn Care Tailored To Your Needs
TurfGator strives to make each yard the talk of the town
A
lush, green lawn is as important to the aesthetic appeal of one’s home as the condition of the shingles on the roof. While some homeowners prefer the do-it-yourself route, Chris Schneider, owner of TurfGator, said that consumers don’t have access to the kinds of industry-strength fertilizers and weed-control products necessary to really do the job right. Every lawn is unique, too, and it may need other types of attention as well, depending on the condition of the turf, the type of grass and weather patterns. The route manager will quickly assess the situation with the use of a soil sample, which is then given to the customer for use in other areas of the yard and/or landscape. “We always customize a plan based on your specific issues,” Schneider said. “There are no ‘cookie cutter’ lawn-care services at TurfGator. You also will never receive a generic product that doesn’t take our area’s weather patterns and conditions into account.” Another nice component of the company is the personal service. “Not only will the route manager become familiar with the homeowner, he will even give his cell phone number to that customer in case anything should arise,” Schneider said. “In addition to the usual number of applications, we throw in free service checks to make sure the customer is completely satisfied.” Born and raised in Highland, Schneider was working as a regional manager for Tru-Green seven years ago in Jackson, Miss., when the opportunity came up to purchase a local company called Fertigator. He jumped at the chance to come back home where he and his wife wanted to raise their family. Schneider teamed up with turf specialist Matt East and together they changed the name to TurfGator and converted Fertigator’s sprinkler
system methods to the more conventional lawn care application that they now offer. The Business has grown by leaps and bounds to 13,000 customers on the Illinois side of the river. Perhaps their company guarantee is a contributing factor to their success: “If you are not satisfied with our service, we will return free of charge! If you are still unhappy, we will refund your last application and pay you $25 for your trouble!”
TurfGator also offers tree and shrub services, and has added pest control to their list of services. To schedule an appointment with the Lebanon-based company, please call (618) 233-7600. Visit www.turfgator.com and www.thepestguysllc.com.
TurfGator knows there are several keys to maintaining a healthy, beautiful lawn and they believe they are experts in all of the following components: Fertilizer • Weed Control • Crabgrass Control Grub Control • Lime Treatments Sulphur Treatments • Core Aeration Aeration and Seeding • Soil Samples

Flooring System Goes On Top Of Existing Concrete!
S
t. Louis Resurfacing, Inc. has long been considered the pioneering leader throughout the Midwest in resurfacing. Family owned and operated, Fred and Cindy Wolf founded the company in 1990. The company enjoys an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau that supports the quality of their products and service. “We are considered the company of record in the Midwest for the installation of the Pebblestone Epoxy System,” said Fred Wolf. “We have applied this popular system to literally thousands of residential and commercial jobs throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area.” The Pebblestone Epoxy System is applied directly over existing patios, driveways, pool decks, front porches and walkways, garage floors, basement floors, and commercial entranceways. Most applications take only one day and can often be used the next day.
“Don’t spend the time and money to tear out existing concrete. The Pebblestone Epoxy System is a durable, quick way to restore your concrete surface, and totally transform ugly concrete into something beautiful,”Wolf said. In addition, the flooring system is stain, chemical, salt and crack resistant. Shawn Wolf, pictured at right with his wife Victoria, is the Senior Crew Chief with a marketing degree from Missouri State University. After finishing college, he decided to take part in the family business and works hard to maintain the highest possible quality in producing the finest decorative concrete resurfacing installations in the Midwest.

Artists in Residence is a community outreach program presented by the Art on the Square Show. Each year, artists visit local schools during the week preceding the show to spend the day demonstrating their particular medium and often working with the students to create art. “At Eye on Design, our job is to create beautiful and functional window dressings to enhance the lives of our clients,” said Brown. “We hope that our partnership with the Artists in Residence Program will help foster creativity in students and help spark a life-long
interest in art and design by bringing art to the classrooms that do not have a regular curriculum.” Brown and her husband Gordon, who heads the installation department, started Eye on Design in 2005 with a mission to create custom options for their clients to meet specific goals for energy efficiency, light control, ultra violet protection, privacy and design. Headquartered in downtown Belleville, Eye on Design has grown to become the region’s largest, most comprehensive Window Design Gallery showcasing the premier collection of Hunter Douglas window fashions and custom drapery, which are handcrafted onsite in its own drapery fabrication shop. Their dedication for providing innovative solutions has earned them a top reputation in the industry that now boasts a strong local base of clients, but also national accounts in the hotel and insurance industry. “From our first window treatment at a home on the West End of Belleville to now covering 10's of thousands of windows at corporate headquarters all across America, we have been truly fortunate,” said Jennaver Brown. “We feel it is only right that we continue to give back as we continue to grow.”

your air conditioner’s $69 best friend is a SPENGLER PRECISION TUNE-UP The Best Way to Guarantee Efficient, Reliable, Worry Free Air Conditioning is to schedule a precision tune up before it heats up. If you own a car you probably don’t think twice about taking it into the shop for periodic tune-ups. After all, everybody wants a smooth enjoyable ride and nobody wants to experience unexpected breakdowns. Common-sense tells you that the best way to keep your car performing at its best is to schedule regular maintenance.

The same applies to your air conditioning. Like your car, your air conditioner is a hard-working machine. It generates a lot of heat and has many moveable parts. It requires fluids and lubricants. Air conditioners are exposed to the elements, they collect dust and dirt and are subject to immeasurable wear and tear. In order to keep your air conditioning system working at its most efficient and economical, you should give it regular tune-ups and maintenance. Unfortunately, most homeowners don’t do so. In a recent survey, over 55% of air conditioning owners do not schedule regular tune-ups for their air conditioning systems and units. Not coincidentally, over half of all A/C users express dissatisfaction with the performance of their air conditioner and its cost to operate. Furthermore, service records show that most major and costly air conditioning repairs could have been prevented or detected early with a simple annual tune-up. Plus studies show, when your A/C unit is performing at its best it will lead to lower utility bills by up to 30%! By tuning up your air conditioner, you greatly increase the chances that your A/C technician will catch small problems before they become big ones. Repairing a small refrigerant leak that’s caught during a tune-up shouldn’t cost much more than the service call itself. On the other hand, buying a new compressor when low refrigerant levels burn your current one out, however, can cost a thousand dollars or more. What would you rather pay for — an ounce of prevention now or a pound of cure later? Precision tune-ups ensure that your A/C unit is working at optimal efficiency. When your A/C is running well, it uses less energy to cool your home. Lower energy use means bigger savings for you on your monthly utility bills. Bottom Line: An air conditioner tune-up will save you lots of money in both the long and short term…and provide you with a worry free summer! There’s no doubt about it: a precision tune-up for your air conditioner is the simplest and best thing you can do to guarantee that your air conditioner will keep you comfortable all summer long and your best assurance that small problems don’t develop into bigger, more expensive headaches later on. Schedule Your Air Conditioner Safety and Professional Cleaning Today! To ensure worry-free, money-saving operation, schedule an air conditioning precision tune-up today! Spengler Plumbing, Heating and Cooling is a locally owned and operated for over 44 years. Call (618) 589-2185 today to schedule your appointment or log onto spenglerco.com to learn more.

That Finishing Touch, Ltd. Now Open in O'Fallon! Grand Opening March 31
F
or Ricka Kreider, a dream come true happened on Friday, February 6 when she unlocked the door of That Finishing Touch, Ltd. and welcomed her first guests. The shop is an evolvement of a lifetime of experiences throughout the country and even the world. Married to a pilot in the Air Force, the couple has moved, with their two kids, 23 times! “Every new location presented different challenges to make the new house a “home” as quickly as possible,” Kreider said. “Different colors, damaged furniture, different room and window sizes, and working on a tight budget are just a few of the issues I’ve encountered over the years.” Indeed, her long-time motto is “Reuse, Repurpose, Refinish!” Her husband, Gary, is now retired and is thoroughly enjoying acting as Ricka’s wingman – or “minion” as he likes to say. “She supported me for 25 years and now I’m doing the same for her,” he said. The two settled here in O’Fallon and luckily their two children, now grown, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren are right here, too. After operating as a consignor at a couple of locations here in O’Fallon, the opportunity arose to move into the 1,500-square-foot retail space on Highway 50 and the Kreiders jumped on it. She is delighted to extend her
unique talents to people who need decorating help. Some of the special items found at the shop include gently used furniture, home décor items, select consignments, jewelry, boutique items and custom florals that change with the season. The space is “divided” into room settings that each display a range of styles. “We take Sundays and Mondays to shop everywhere we can,” Ricka Kreider said. “I search through auctions, yard sales, estate sales and more to find things that blend with others for a fresh, new look.” That Finishing Touch also offers affordable decorating services for the home, special events and the holidays. Your Vehicle, Your Choice, Your Shop Offers “Old-Fashioned Service” With The Most Up-To-Date Technology
H
oernis Auto Body has built an exemplary reputation on the philosophical foundation that high-quality repairs, fair treatment to employees and vendors, and exceptional customer service, will gain the trust and respect of customers for a lifetime. Today, Hoernis is one of the largest and most respected collision repair centers in Southern Illinois. Located at 207 20th Street for the past 15 years, the family business is owned and managed by the children of founder Jim Hoernis. Sons Russell and Steve, and daughter Debbie, are determined to continue their father’s mission in this 51st year and beyond. “We plan to continue providing what we call oldfashioned service,” said Steve Hoernis. “We’ll keep on using the best in technology available in our industry and doing everything at the highest level possible. Hoernis also strives to meet the demands and changes in the industry. Meeting those changes means we will be taking a slightly different approach to the way we market ourselves. We will have a greater presence online and more aggressive advertising and messaging. But overall, we’ll continue to focus on quality.”
domestic and foreign. Per Illinois State Law, Hoernis assists in hassle-free insurance claims through any property damage insurance company. (It’s Your Choice). Steve Hoernis said recently that today it’s harder than ever to compete in the marketplace. “Our new marketing message is: ‘Your Vehicle, Your Choice, YOUR Body Shop. Call Us First!’ While we promote our 50-year-old mission and that we are a family business, we are emphasizing that consumers do have a choice when choosing a body shop. These days, when you have an accident and need your vehicle repaired, you may be persuaded (sometimes strongly) to take your vehicle to a shop that is on an insurance company's 'Preferred List or 'Direct Repair Program.' That's fine if you know and trust the shop that is being suggested to you. But make sure it is Your choice based on your research." He continued, “The biggest concern with some insurance direct repair programs is that they may create a business environment where safety and quality could suffer. Speed of repairs and cost savings are important to the insurance carriers, but should never be an excuse for an unsafe or sloppy repair for the vehicle owner."
Opening Hoernis Auto Body in 1964 at the former Richland Mills Company carriage and horse stable on Third Street in Belleville, Jim Hoernis grew the business and expanded two more times in the years 1972 through 1999. Interestingly, the shop was known for not only servicing individual customers, but also several other regional body shops. These shops contracted Hoernis to repair the new “unibody” designed vehicles that were new to the ‘80s, as well as perform traditional heavy frame repairs and wheel alignments. The facility on 20th Street is designed and operated to process quality collision repairs efficiently. It is equipped with the technology and properly trained technicians needed to restore vehicles back to manufacturers’ standards. Hoernis works on almost all makes:
So the Hoernis family has made a commitment to continue striving for their father’s original mission: quality, fairness and great customer service by a member of the family. “We meet a lot of people who are going through some tough and stressful moments,” Debbie Hoernis-Kruep said. “It’s very rewarding to be able to remove some of the burden by educating them about our industry, contacting their insurance company and keeping downtime to a minimum. When a customer comes in and says, ‘You fixed my Dad’s car 30 years ago and I remember it was such a good job, I trust you to do mine.’ I am proud to be a part of that tradition!” Hoernis Auto Body is located at 207 20th Street; (618) 234-6538; and visit www.hoernisautobody.com and facebook.com/hoernisautobody.

Long-Time Studio Makes Memories One Photo At A Time
G
ary Luttrell literally grew up with a camera in his hand, learning at first from his father and going on to open his own business that has become a household name in professional photography.
“I’ve been doing photography since I was 10 years old,”said Luttrell, noting that his father, who had a long career with the railroad, also did commercial photography for Tupperware.“We even had a dark room in the home.” Known for designer portrait work, he uses the most up-to-date equipment, aesthetic lighting and artistic posing to create portraits that last a lifetime. Recently, Luttrell added additional professional staff to accommodate their expanding client base and to give customers the best experience possible. Each photographer and finishing artist involved today is geared toward providing clients with more variety, more products and more options. Pictured on this page are some of the unique ways to display photography. “I want people to know we are a brick and mortar studio with an experienced staff that has a combined 100 years in the business,” he said. Gary Luttrell Photography also does framing at the studio for their clients. “We really know how to use all the most up-todate equipment and products, which makes us different from the ‘weekend warriors’ who shoot some pictures and put them on a disk with no professional enhancements for wall displays.” One of the hallmarks of his work is the dedication to capturing the images customers really want, using pre-session consultations and extensive planning. For example, during a high school senior session, the client and he discuss hobbies, favorite colors, certain settings, etc. This results in garnering portraits that both reflect cherished moments and are themselves a work of art.
“When I take a picture, first it’s going to be great to begin with,” Luttrell laughed, “but then I make it amazing by further enhancements. However you feel on the day we take your picture, we will make you look like it’s your best day ever!” By Luttrell’s side for 32 years, is his wife, Lila, who is also “a very good photographer and a driving force behind the business,” he said. “It’s hard to be married and be gone from home on weekends and such if your spouse isn’t with you. Even though we’ve given up some other social opportunities, we are always together, which makes work fun!” Besides their state-of-the-art equipment, the use of current software and continuing education keep all the Gary Luttrell Photography staff on the cutting edge. The staff also enjoys going to trade shows and conventions where they meet photographers from around the world. Luttrell loves to photograph babies, children, high school seniors and also enjoys working with family portraits, brides and grooms, business portraits and even commercial photography. “Now I’m photographing second generations,” he said. “I didn’t realize how much time has gone by!” Currently the studio has a fun promotion going on called “Amazing Kids” to benefit Backstoppers. The campaign is a traveling photo display that goes from business to business and gives viewers a chance to “vote” for the cutest kid! Each vote is $1 and goes straight to Backstoppers. Look for it at Eckert’s, Bel-Air Bowl, Fun Spot, Bank of Belleville, Sandy's Back Porch and Tribout's to name a few. Other locations are being sought, please call the studio if you would like to have the display at your business. Call Gary Luttrell Photography at (618) 277-3686 and visit www.garyluttrell. com plus facebook.com/garyluttrellphotography.

“JOY OF EASTER” CELEBRATES 26 YEARS APRIL 1ST, 2ND, AND 3RD at 7:30 P.M.
ST. MATTHEW UNITED METHODIST CHURCH,1200 MORELAND DRIVE IN BELLEVILLE
E
aster is a beautiful time of the year to celebrate new beginnings and reflect on those things that have brought joy to our lives. For the 26th year, St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Belleville will present “The Joy of Easter:” a dramatic interpretation of the Passion Play complete with large choir, orchestra, live animals and full cast. “The ‘Joy of Easter’ reminds us of God’s love and how he sent his son to pay the ultimate price for us,” said Scott Ferguson, casting director for the program and hospitality/guest services director at the church. “We try to include as many volunteers of all ages from the congregation so there’s a real connection with our audience.”
Volunteers are church members but also include children and their families from the church day care program. “Participating is a fantastic experience that is now reaching the second and third generation of some members’ families. It’s also a nice way to get to know people within the church,” he said. This year’s performances will be April 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at 7:30 p.m. Admission is FREE. A love offering will be taken. “Everyone loves this program so much that some may come back the next night with friends,” he said. Each evening draws at least 1,500 attendees each night and half are usually visitors to the church.
In fact, there are over 350 volunteers who participate in this glorious production including cast, crew and musicians. “It truly does ‘take a village’,” Ferguson said.
“Our music program at St. Matthew has been a large part of our community outreach,” said “Joy of Easter” musical director and director of music ministries at the church Hank Oplinger. “We also invite the public to Keyboard Praise, the Glory of Christmas and our fantastic Christian Concert Series featuring nationally known artists.”
Jesus will be played by Jamie Palmer and the role of the narrators are Luke Patton and Reverend Andy Anthony. Drama director is Lindsay Vollmar who is also director of children’s ministries at St. Matthew. Scenes of various Bible stories starting with the birth of Jesus and ending with the crucifixion are depicted with actors in fabulous costumes, live animals and a professionally designed and built set.
For more information, call (618) 397-5994. It is recommended to call ahead if you are coming with a group and arriving an hour early is also a good idea. A nursery is provided. St. Matthew UMC is located at 1200 Moreland Drive in Belleville, 62223; www. stmatthewumc.org.
“You hear about this production your whole life, but it is life changing once you really experience it in person,” Ferguson said. “It’s our favorite time of the year at St. Matthew.”
Regular Sunday Services are at 8 a.m., 9:17 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 6:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening meals are from 4:30 to 6 :30 p.m.; $7 adults, $3 children – please call ahead for reservations.

Outpatient Rehab Center Practices “The Wellness Model”
F
Preferred focuses on each patient’s problems as a unique case. “We have someone in her 20’s with arthritis,” Dr. Renner said. “Of course protocol is much different with her than others in a more typical age range. Each patient has a tailor-made program of care for their specific problem.”
“I think our on-going success is attributed to a friendly, professional staff plus our proprietary treatment methods,” said clinic director, Dr. Christopher Renner. “I also believe our patients' diligent participation and commitment to their own personal health influences more positive treatment outcomes.”
Recently added to the practice is a new, breakthrough treatment for osteoporosis is BStrong4Life® that allows the doctor to address the strength and quality of the bone. It works to make the bone stronger by reversing osteoporosis without medication. “I feel this program completes the circle of a true neuro-musculo-skeletal specialist,” Dr. Renner said. “I am so excited to be able to offer a conservative solution for such a lifechanging condition.”
or almost 20 years now, Preferred Spine and Rehab in Fairview Heights has been effectively treating spinal (neck, mid-back, and low-back), shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, hip, knee, foot and ankle problems. The facility is an outpatient rehabilitation clinic offering non-surgical Spinal Decompression, Class IV Laser Therapy, Physical Therapy, Chiropractic and Massage Therapy, Weight Loss, Wellness, and treatment for Peripheral Neuropathy.
Preferred Spine and Rehab has also had great success with cases that went unsolved elsewhere. “People are in pain for a reason,” Dr. Renner said. “When a primary care physician tells you there’s no answer, well, that’s just not satisfactory. We can help. And if say we can help, we will. Patients can expect to feel better.” When patients enter the facility, they are greeted by two friendly receptionists who will provide a complimentary insurance verification. “We work with all insurance companies,” he said. “But if the patient doesn’t have insurance, we do have affordable payment plans that have made care within reach for most patients.” Interestingly, Dr. Renner was introduced to alternative medicine for whiplash pain relief as a result of an automobile accident. Inspired by the effective back pain relief treatments that he received, Dr. Renner began his career in the alternative medicine field by earning a pre-chiropractic education at Southwestern Illinois College and then a fouryear degree at SIUE. He was then accepted at Logan College of Chiropractic. Shortly after graduation, Dr. Renner joined the team at Preferred Spine and Rehab in Fairview Heights and additionally became a Titlist Certified Golf Fitness Instructor – one of the few in the area. This is a national certification that enables him to work with golf pros and other avid golfers to take their game beyond their swing.
Preferred Spine and Rehab is located at 5007 North Illinois Street, Suite 1 Fairview Heights; (618) 207-4790; www.preferredspineandrehab.com. All in all, I was always in pain, but now I’m not, so it really has improved all aspects of my life. From getting a good night’s sleep to working, walking and all aspects of everyday life! - Patrick Manalang
I was having many problems with my lower back and my right hip. I wasn’t able to walk up or down steps. Within a few weeks, I just felt like a whole new person because I could walk up and down steps and do my chores around the house. I am very pleased with Dr. Renner and his group. They have helped me so much, and I thank you. - Fern Bull

your child works very hard but still gets a poor report card or your child avoids reading and homework as much as possible, Unger Eyecare may be able to help. When a child complains that he can’t see the board your immediate thought is to schedule an eye exam. But when your child brings home a poor report card, you should also consider that a sign that you need to schedule an eye exam. Why an eye exam? When a child struggles with reading and nothing seems to help consistently it is a sign that a vision problem is underlying your child’s difficulties. Does your child love being read to, but hates to read? Is he or she an “auditory learner”? These are signs of a vision problem. The Learning Disabilities Association of America says that when you find a child who is struggling with learning that you should check for vision and hearing problems. Unfortunately, most people incorrectly assume there is nothing wrong with a child’s vision if he or she can see “20/20.” Dr. Tom Unger, optometrist with an office in Troy, said, “If you have a child who is struggling with reading and schoolwork it is vital that you understand that being able to see the letters on the eye chart is just one of over 20 visual skills critical to reading and learning.” Children do not know how they are supposed to see so they rarely complain when they have difficulty seeing the words on the page. Therefore it becomes critical that you are aware of some of the

“CASA Kid” Is Thriving After Receiving The Help Of His CASA Volunteer And Foster Family By Bethany Prange, Communications Coordinator, CASA of Southwestern Illinois
H
e’s tall and broad-shouldered, so at first glance, one might wonder if he’s going to be intimidating. But then he smiles. He smiles that wide, silly grin that instantly puts others at ease. You just know you’re going to like him. Maybe it’s his playful demeanor, but Warren Gilmore looks younger than his 33 years. He laughs easily, and speaks eloquently and passionately about music. It’s his dream to one day teach music at the high school or college level. Today, he sits in the offices of CASA of Southwestern Illinois in Belleville. But this is not the first time he has come in contact with the nonprofit. Two decades ago, Gilmore was a “CASA kid,” a child assigned by the courts to work with a Court Appointed Special Advocate. Back then, Gilmore was like any 12-year-old boy, struggling to figure out his place in the world. But for Gilmore, an adopted child who had just been thrown back into the foster care system, the tumultuous teenage years were about to get even more difficult.
At his new school, his good grades and manners did not serve him well – they made him a target for bullying by his classmates. “I know for a fact that having a CASA worker really kept me out of trouble because of the things I was around,” Gilmore said. “They were always trying to initiate me into a gang. I was never looking for that kind of trouble, but I was trying to find something to be a part of.” Gilmore, who had been in the gifted program at his old school, struggled to keep his grades up. He lived in four different foster homes between seventh and eighth grades. While his foster parents were good, they had several children to focus on. His CASA volunteer, however, could devote his attention to just him. “It was good having someone focused solely on you,” Gilmore said. “We’d go on walks, talk about things.” By the end of Gilmore’s eighth grade year, he landed in his fifth and final foster home. He lived with the Csaszar family in Belleville throughout his high school career, and still considers them his family. Gilmore attended Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and Southwestern Illinois College. He earned three associate degrees in music education and performance and fine arts. “My dream is to teach music in high school or teach music theory in college or be a collegiate choir director,” Gilmore said. “I want to go back to school eventually.”
“I was in junior high school, at a time when you’re trying to find yourself, you’re trying to become a man, and your relationship with your parents is really important,” Gilmore said. As he faced the uncertainty of his future in the foster care system, Gilmore had one adult he could rely on – Bob, his CASA volunteer. “There was a CASA worker that was involved and that made things a lot easier,” Gilmore said. “The biggest thing was he didn’t pressure me to try to tell him about myself. At that time you’re dealing with trust issues - he eased me into trusting him.”
Right now Gilmore is working and saving money to go back to college. He teaches private vocal and piano lessons and serves as the choir director/minister of music at Trinity United Methodist Church in East St. Louis.
From ages 3 to 12, Gilmore lived with his adopted parents, who raised him to respect his elders, speak proper English and do well in school. “It took a while to set in that I wasn’t at home (with my adopted parents),” Gilmore said. “I would go to sleep and I would forget I wasn’t in my old bed. Then I’d wake up screaming.”
Gilmore credits several people, including the Csaszars and his CASA volunteer, with helping get to where he is today. He encourages everyone in the Metro East to support CASA’s mission.
When he was returned to the foster care system in the seventh grade, Gilmore was sent to a different junior high school in East St. Louis - a poorly-ranked school plagued by drugs, gangs and violence. It has since burned down. “You have a person who went to a nice elementary school, lived in a nice home, and it was such a change,” Gilmore said. “There were drugs in the school, lockers ripped off their hinges, classrooms boarded up.”
CASA of Southwestern Illinois is a Belleville-based nonprofit that serves Madison, St. Clair and Monroe counties. CASA recruits, trains and supports Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers to work for the best interest of abused and neglected children. CASAs serve as a voice for these children in juvenile court systems, helping to ensure every child has a safe, loving home. You can make a difference for children like Warren Gilmore by becoming a CASA volunteer or donating to CASA of Southwestern Illinois. Learn more by calling 618-234-4278 or visit www.stclaircasa.com.
