Creative Landscapes Is A One-Stop Shop For ALL Exterior Needs

A

s Creative Landscapes continues to grow by leaps and bounds, owner Josh Martie has been working hard on the beautiful garden center that is loaded with flowering and green plants, vegetables and herbs, trees and shrubs. He is happy to introduce new garden center manager, Rachel Martin. Graduating with her horticulture degree from Southwestern Illinois College this spring, she is looking forward to helping customers design a landscape they can plant on their own. “Just bring a photo of your current landscape by the garden center and she will take it from there,” Martie said. “We also offer bulk delivery on mulch, rock, sod and soil for those who wish to do their own landscape work.”

Discussing what’s new at Creative Landscapes, Martie said people are staying put in their current homes and rehabbing things they want to change, and the “back-yard” vacation is becoming even more popular. “Of course the economy plays a role in this trend, but I also think cable television shows for do-it-yourselfers give people the ideas and motivation to start a project, but they know they need help from a professional. That’s where we come in!” Martie has added a patio display complete with a fireplace and outdoor grill to use during their planned special events throughout the year.

For those who want to employ the professional services of Creative Landscapes, there is a new landscape designer, Jody DeVries, with a bachelor’s in horticulture from Southern Illinois - Carbondale, to help. “Jody specializes in hand-drawn landscape plans - a new service we are offering,” Martie said. “Together with George Windham, our lead landscape foreman, we can provide a dream design.” Creative Landscapes continues to provide dependable services delivered with the highest degree of quality and care by an experienced staff. One could truly say that Creative Landscapes is a one-stop-shop for all exterior landscaping needs either for the do-it-yourselfer or the person who just wants it all done for them.

The next event is Mother’s Day weekend, on May 12, when there will be grilled hotdogs for all and children will be able to pot and decorate a 4-inch annual for free. Also, the first 20 moms on May 12 will receive a Nantucket blue hydrangea with any purchase. Creative Landscapes is at 5515 Old Collinsville Road in Fairview Heights where they feature a botanical garden-like setting. Call (618) 632-9338 and visit www.stlcreativelandscapes.com for more information.

room for change Plan your work, then work your plan

I

t makes great television - dingy, dull rooms transformed in just days to stylish, functional, relaxing retreats - but dramatic decor makeovers don’t just happen overnight, no matter what those “before and after” photos may lead viewers to believe.

Planning is the key to a weekend design makeover; it provides the framework for the entire redesign project. “When it is your own room and you’re putting your personality and your life into it, it takes more than a weekend,” said Kay Kendall of Kay Kendall Interior Design. “Most of the actual labor can be done in a weekend, but before that time arrives you’ll need to decide on a color scheme, decide what to put in the room, sketch out a workable floor plan and prepare all the supplies needed for the weekend redo. If you’re looking for the big changes, change the wall color, move the furniture around, spend some time on the floor plan and have fun with accessories.” Finding inspiration is the first step to creating a relaxing, well-designed room with personality. “You always start with one thing that you fall in love with,” Kendall said. “It’s the stepping-off point for the rest of the room. You use that piece of inspiration as a guide. If everyone has that guide, you can pull a room together.” Inspiration can come from anything: from a beautiful pillow to a favorite piece of art. Scour magazines for colors, patterns, accessories or images that appeal to you to get an idea of where your interest lies, she said. You may find an image of a plant to work from or just a photo of a room you hope to re-create. Boxes of trinkets and mementos collected over time are another great place to find inspiration, she said. Decorating ideas can come from things as simple as feathers, rocks or seashells collected on vacation. To help define your preferred palette, look through your closet and see what colors prevail, then peg them to a pillow, painting or other decorating item.

“If you spread those colors around the room and have certain pieces that use the same colors as the inspiration piece to tie everything together, I’m not going to say you have a perfect room, but you have a great start,” Kendall said. Once the framework of color is in place, determine the appropriate accessories to bring the room to life. “It’s kind of nice to layer or unlayer,” she said, who prefers a seasonal approach to accessorizing a room. “When adjusting accessories take everything out of the room and just look at the things you have,” she said. “You might find things that you take for granted. You might wonder, ‘Why did we hang on to that?’” “Start putting back the things that really fit in the room and find a spot for them, then you’ll know what you need,” Kendall said. “You want the room to have a little piece of personality, a little spark that makes it your room, something that is just different and fun.” Designing a functional floor plan is the final step in planning a weekend makeover. “Draw out the room showing the lines of traffic, then you know where you don’t want furniture to go. Sometimes that really makes it clear where furniture fits,” she said. Try several scenarios with furniture out of the line of traffic and clustered by function. Also, try arranging the furniture on a diagonal, which can give the room a whole new dimension. Once the floor plan is set, the placement of artwork and accessories will fall into place. Armed with an inspirational piece, a shopping list and a practical floor plan, a weekend room redo should be a stress-free snap - just remember to enjoy yourself. “Having fun makes such a difference,” she said. Call Kay Kendall Interior Design to schedule an in-home consultation at (618) 567-6008 and visit her Facebook page.

Tower Grove Park Named A Level-II Arboretum

One Of Only 74 Internationally; Two In St. Louis

T

ower Grove Park in St. Louis has been named a level-II arboretum by ArbNet, the international accrediting agency. The ranking is considered a prestigious indicator of the size and quality of the tree collection, its care and education programs. There are only 74 level-II arboretums internationally and St. Louis claims two. First opened to the public in 1872, Tower Grove Park is home to a large and diverse mature urban forest displayed across 289 acres. A tree inventory was completed in 2016 that determined the park has 6,820 trees. There are 225 species and 58 subspecies making up a total of 283 confirmed types. Every tree is digitally labeled on a GPS-enabled interactive map viewable on the park’s responsive website at www.towergrovepark.org. Of special note in the Tower Grove Park tree collection are: • The majestic “Hundred Year” Oak Grove in the northwest quadrant of the park, home to a variety of oaks, some more than 13 feet in circumference. • Stands of less usual osage-orange (Maclura pomifera) around the park, with their oversized knobby green fruits. There is a dramatically curved specimen near the Music Stand. These are some of the oldest in the park. • The Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) “cathedral” in the Cypress Ellipse on Main Drive. • A variety of interesting Ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) being carefully protected from Emerald Ash Borer. • The children’s favorite “Keebler Elves Tree” - and elderly Catalpa along South Drive that is largely hollowed out. • Missouri State Champion trees Possumhaw (Ilex decidua) and bigtooth aspen (Populus tremuloides).

“Tower Grove Park was founded by Henry Shaw, a man who loved trees and planted thousands during his lifetime,” said the park’s executive director Bill Reininger. “We are delighted to have achieved this important distinction as a level-II arboretum. As we look forward to the Park’s 150th anniversary in 2020, we hope to steward this precious and historic resource, our urban forest, for decades to come.” For more information, please visit www.towergrovepark.org.

The Apartment Community Has A New Name:

The Esquiline

A Life Plan Community at the Shrine

N

estled on 200 tranquil, wooded acres in Belleville, yet close to everything that St. Louis has to offer, the non-profit, faith-based Life Plan Community offers independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing care.

Here, residents of all faiths pursue active aging through wellness in body, mind and spirit on the beautifully landscaped grounds of The National Shrine of Our Lady of The Snows. And now, they are introducing a new name with a deep connection to its unique roots: “The Esquiline.” The story behind the name: In ancient Rome, Mary had a dream that a church would be built in her honor on a site covered with snow. She shared her dream with a Roman couple, who then shared it with others. Remarkably, one hot August morning, snow fell on Esquiline Hill, one of the seven celebrated hills of Rome. All of Rome proclaimed the summer snow a miracle, and a church was built on the hill to honor Mary. The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows celebrates this story and their setting atop a hill on its stunning grounds makes “The Esquiline” the perfect name for this community. For more information, visit DiscoverTheEsquiline.org for event dates and locations, and contact Martha Holloway at (618) 394-6852 or by email at Martha.Holloway@apartmentcommunity.org.

Worried Your Child Will Be Left Behind? • Have trouble making out words? • “Forget” to bring homework assignments home? • Find it harder to read at the end of the day than in the morning? • Skip words or repeat lines when reading out loud to you? • Reverse letters like b's into d's when reading? • Have a short attention span? If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a fully correctable vision problem. Please don’t assume your child is not at risk because the results of the last vision screening came through OK. To be sure your child has all the visual skills required for reading and learning, schedule a developmental vision evaluation (this is different than a regular eye exam and is typically performed by a Developmental Optometrist).

A

re you concerned about whether or not your child will be left behind? Are you worried he or she might need to attend Summer school? All too often a child is left back with the hope that the second time through a light bulb will suddenly go off. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work. Following is an important message for parents.

If a vision problem is at the root of your child’s difficulties, there is hope that there will be a positive end to all the struggling. Schedule a developmental vision evaluation for your child today. For a more information about the critical link between vision and learning, please visit www.ungereyecare.com, or call (618) 667-2020.

When a child is struggling with schoolwork - despite all best attempts to help - there is a strong possibility that your child may be struggling with a vision problem. Before you say, “Not my child, he has perfect vision,” please keep reading. As soon as parents and educators hear that a child can see 20/20, they assume the child has “perfect vision,” which couldn’t be further from the truth. All it means is your child can see the size of letters that are supposed to be seen from a distance of 20 feet. This is only ONE of over 15 visual skills critical to reading and learning. According to Dr. Thomas Unger, a developmental optometrist in Troy, “If a child is missing even one of these visual skills, reading and learning can become difficult. If a child is missing more, reading can be nearly impossible.” If your child struggles with reading, you need to know the symptoms of a vision problem because children rarely tell their parents they are having trouble seeing. Here are some of the more common symptoms.

Does your child:

• Get frustrated when trying to read or do homework? • Take much longer doing his/her homework than it should? • Have a “tracking” problem?

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning

problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a

Developmental Vision Evaluation.

“First and foremost, though, we are passionate about chiropractic and our patients’ care. The majority of our patients are referred to us by our current patients who have experienced the HealthSource difference.” Visiting a chiropractor is similar to visiting other healthcare providers, but the experience will be a little different. Patients are greeted warmly by the Front Desk team member, offered water or tea, and asked to complete a health questionnaire. Before being shown to the adjusting room, patients receive a tour of the whole clinic. The doctor and patient will discuss health concerns then start with a set of routine physical assessments. “We may perform motion tests, palpation, reflex testing, muscle strength comparisons and X-rays (if needed). These assessments will give us a baseline of your current health and help us create an individualized treatment plan that we will create to get you feeling better,” Dr. Roche said.

Lilies, Fertilizers And Insecticides

Pose As Threats To Your Pets Words of caution from Lashley Animal Hospital W

hile spring is in the air, it’s important to note a few risks to your pets in and around the yard.

Lilies: There are dangerous and benign lilies out there, and it’s important to know the difference. Peace, Peruvian, and Calla lilies contain oxalate crystals that cause minor signs, such as tissue irritation to the mouth, tongue, pharynx, and esophagus – this results in minor drooling. The more dangerous, potentially fatal lilies are true lilies, including Tiger, Day, Asiatic, Easter and Japanese Show lilies – all of which are highly toxic to cats! Even small ingestions (such as two to three petals or leaves) can result in severe kidney failure. If your cat is seen consuming any part of a lily, bring your cat (and the plant) immediately to a veterinarian for medical care. The sooner you bring in your cat, the better and more efficiently the poisoning can be treated. Decontamination (like inducing vomiting and giving binders like activated charcoal) is imperative in the early toxic stage, while aggressive intravenous fluid therapy, kidney function monitoring tests, and supportive care can greatly improve the prognosis. Fertilizer/ Insecticides: Most lawn fertilizers contain natural elements (such as nitrogen, potash and phospho-

rous) - often represented by numbers such as 10:0:40. Thankfully, these elements are generally non-toxic. Fertilizers may also contain insecticides for killing grubs, snails, etc. that generally result in mild gastrointestinal signs (e.g., drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.) when ingested directly from the bag. If your dog eats some grass that had fertilizer applied to it, it rarely leads to serious poisoning; that said, more serious signs can be seen when the product is directly ingested (i.e., right out of the bag). If ingested directly from the bag, the results can include tremors and seizures. To avoid any poisoning risk to your pet, follow the labeled instructions carefully and keep your pets inside while you apply these products to the lawn. To be safe, keep your pets off the lawn until the product is absorbed by the soil (e.g., when the product dries if it’s a spray-on product or after it rains if it is a pelleted product). When appropriately applied or diluted, these chemicals typically wash into the soil after rainfall or watering resulting in low-risk to dogs. For more information, call Lashley Animal Hospital at (618) 234-4584; www.lashleyanimalhospital.com.

Don Rodgers Ltd.

Spring Fashion Is Blooming In Bright Colors Of The Season

S

top in Don Rodgers today and check out all the fabulous fashions from casual to dressy for both women and men. Today, the shop is loaded with all the bright colors of the season including coral, turqouise and lavendar to name a few. “Really, we are the last fashion boutique in the area that offers women’s and men’s merchandise,” owner Roger Wigginton said. “Nobody has my look at my price! The things we carry here will never be found in a shopping mall. Consequently, our customers love that uniqueness and the very competitive prices. I keep my overhead down and pass that savings on to you.”

“We offer matching solid slacks, skirts and shells in seven different colors, and then we combine a fabulous blouse or jacket to make an amazing outfit,” Wigginton said. Then all you need is a different colorful blouse or jacket and voila… a new outfit! And by the way, a large percentage of their merchandise is made in America or Canada, and come in easy-care, wrinkle-free fabrics most of which can be washed. Known as the “jacket capital of the Midwest,” shoppers can choose from tons of different styles to wear with a dressy pant or skirt, or even jeans. Don’t wait too long when the new season’s items are placed on the shelves – they will likely be gone by the end of the week.

Don Rodgers Ltd. has been an anchor in the West End of Belleville not only as a successful retail business but also as a champion for the community. Always “in-the-know,” Wigginton has made it a life-long mission to be involved in making the West End a wonderful place to live, work and shop. Studying the trends daily, he and his long-time buyer, Linda Watson, both agree "this is the most colorful spring we have seen in years. Everything is cute, stylish and saleable." "We have all the fun casual tops - still popular is the cold-shoulder top and the tunic plus we are seeing more of the bell sleeve, Wigginton said. "Pair these cute tops with our perfectly fitting denim and wonderful capris in a wide selection of colors." Of course Don Rodgers is known for dressy separates in easy-care fabrics. Some time ago, he and Watson could see that fashion designers were no longer showing as many dresses as in the past. Seeing an opportunity, they wisely created a niche in this department perfect for special occasions such as weddings, cruises and nights on the town.

for this brand of jean.

The men’s department is equally as impressive with such sophisticated brands as Forsyth of Canada, Hardwick Clothes, Fusion and the amazing Grand River jeans. In fact, he just had to order another 100 pairs to meet the demand

In the men's area, customers can find suits, sport coats, dress shirts, golf shirts, sweaters, trousers, casual pants and those great jeans. And, there are two seamstresses for alterations available. Something relatively new is the Normal Brand founded by Lan Sansone of St. Louis featuring soft, yet durable, cotton Tees, Henleys, button downs, polos and more. “The Normal Brand caters more to the younger men weekend wear,” Wigginton said. “So far it has done well here.” Please visit Don Rodgers Ltd. at 6727 W. Main Street, (618) 398-2421. "Like" the store on Facebook and visit www.donrodgersltd.net.

To Win A 2018 Corvette

The raffle began on July 31, 2017 and will end with a winner at Jack Schmitt Chevrolet, 2 p.m. on July 31! This project was supported by Grant #2015-VA-GX-0049, awarded by the Office for Victims of Crime, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice, through the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority. Points of view or opinions contained within this document are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the official position or policies of the U.S. Department of Justice, or the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority.

Despite the advances in modern medicine, little if any research funding is dedicated to Syndactyly largely because it is not a life threatening affliction. It is, however, a fairly common congenital defect that has no known preventative measures, and is only treated today by surgical intervention. Children afflicted by the birth defect must often undergo complicated and potentially, but not normally, life threatening surgery at very early ages to give the child a chance at full function when the condition is Syndactyly of the hand.
