Safety Is #1 Priority For Outdoor Fun

S

ince 1991, family-owned Dream Play Recreation has provided a colorful myriad of the highest quality playground and recreational equipment on the market. Dream Play offers Rainbow Play Systems - "AMERICA'S MOST TRUSTED NAME BRAND" - Goalsetter and Goalrilla basketball goals, and the revolutionary Springfree Trampoline. Currently, the company is working hard to deliver and install all products while the staff works from home. The showroom is closed, but please place orders online or via email showroom@dreamplayrec.com.

When it comes to basketball goals, Dream Play offers the best built goals available today. Goalsetter is 100 percent American made with a lifetime warranty. “These goals have no peers in terms of build quality, functionality and durability. We also carry Goalrilla basketball goals. They have really upped their game in the market with their ‘Clear View’ line-up of goals made to mimic the look of basketball goals you see in college and professional arenas, and also come with a lifetime warranty,” he said. And for fun plus fantastic health benefits, Springfree Trampolines are the safest trampoline in the world.

“Safety is a huge parental concern: the playsets and trampolines we have are the safest, and best built in the country,” said Tim Albers, owner. “Plus, our in-house installers take all the safety parameters into account to ensure a safe play environment once the equipment is installed. Dream Play will make sure the job is done right.”

“Springfree is the only trampoline I will carry. Simply put, they have engineered 90 percent of all product related injuries that occur on trampolines out of the product. There are no springs or metal frame to fall on and you can’t fall out. Plus, the net is not held up with steel poles that also cause injury,” Albers said. Springfree uses flexible glass infused rods for its bounce. The rods lie beneath the jumping surface out of harms way. Traditional trampolines have springs that give it the bounce, and despite safety pads, can still injure.

Dream Play carries Rainbow Play Systems, a premium brand of playsets, because it has only the best in quality, safety, value and expandability. Rainbow, which started in 1985, has the largest swing set factory in the world and is located in Brookings, South Dakota. “All Rainbow Play Systems are constructed of cedar, which are naturally resistant to insects and decay, making it the best choice for any outdoor playset. All the edges of the wood are routed, rounded, sanded smooth and pre-stained from the factory. In addition, using only true construction size beams, all the major joints are throughbolted, some using triple joint construction, and secured with half-inch commercial hardware,” Albers said. “No other playset company makes their products this way. Cedar also takes stain well so it’s not as maintenance intense as other lumber. Rainbow Play Systems are simply the best made swing sets in America.”

“The health benefits of trampolines have long been known: 10 minutes on a trampoline is equal to 30 minutes of jogging. Astronauts train on trampolines. With Springfree, you can have all the benefits without the negatives,” Albers said. In addition, Springfree offers a 10-year warranty, which is unmatched in the industry. When Stay-at-Home Orders are lifted, Dream Play Recreation invites all customers to experience their 12,000-square-foot showroom – one of the largest in the country – filled with 19 playsets, nine basketball goals in a court area, three trampolines and four sport trainers on display ready for your test play. Dream Play Recreation is located at 17373 Edison Avenue in Chesterfield, MO; (636) 530-0055 or (800) 962-0055; www.dreamplayrec.com.

Successful Container Gardening:

Pots, Soil, Plants, Action!

Containers can change the entire look of a landscape. Even when there is ample room to garden in the ground, wellplaced containers within the garden can provide easy-toachieve seasonal changes as well as make bold statements. Successful container gardeners know that a good looking, well-maintained and long-lasting container just doesn't happen. When a few basic principles are applied, even first-time gardeners can create and maintain attentiongrabbing containers. With appropriate containers and proper handling, anything that can be grown in the ground can be grown in a container.

I

n a world of limited time and space, container gardens seem to make more and more sense. Containers allow gardeners to enjoy growing plants in places that might be thought of as impossible or unthinkable in which to plant. Poor soil or no place to put plants in the ground is no longer an excuse for not being able to enjoy the simple pleasures of gardening. Container gardening lends itself to creating special gardens that fit any situation. In fact, it's easier to grow unique plants that need a bit more attention than in a large inground garden. The popularity of container gardening has exploded. Plants in containers are showing up everywhere. From the front porches of bungalows to the rooftops of urban high-rises to the streets of Main Street U.S.A. plants in pots can be found. Container gardening in European countries is almost an artform where the passion for gardening is not diminished due to lack of space. Gardens show up in window boxes, balconies and decorative pots filled with flowers, vegetables and herbs on the most modest of properties.

With these gardens, individual plants can take on an entirely new look when displayed in containers highlighting the plant's unique color, texture and form. Combination planters using a variety of plant material achieve the look of a "bouquet with roots" providing color throughout the season. Containers also allow gardeners to provide instant color anywhere and at anytime.

Choosing a Container for Planting Anything that holds soil and has drainage holes in the bottom may be transformed into a container garden for terrestrial plants. Consider eye appeal, convenience and cost, when choosing a container. Also think about how easy it will be keep the plants healthy. For vibrant plant growth, the containers must provide adequate space for roots and soil media, allowing the plant to thrive. Use containers of vigorous plants to: • provide focal points • divide outdoor rooms • create privacy • screen objectionable views • accent the landscape • grow tasty herbs, fruits and vegetables As Hollywood would say: "Pots, Soil, Plants, Action!" Eye Doctor Helps Legally Blind To See

High Technology For Low Vision Patients Helps Many To Drive Again

or many patients with macular degeneration and other vision-related conditions, the loss of central visual detail also signals the end to one of the last bastion of independence: driving. A Mascoutah optometrist, Dr. Marianne McDaniel, is using miniaturized telescopes that are mounted in glasses to help people who have lost vision from macular degeneration and other eye conditions.

Nine out of 10 people who have macular degeneration have the dry form. New research suggests vitamins can help. The British medical journal BMC Ophthalmology recently reported that 50 percent of patients treated with a high-dose combination of vitamins experienced improved vision after six months. While age is the most significant risk factor for developing the disease, heredity, smoking, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure have also been identified as risk factors.

Some patients consider Dr. Marianne McDaniel the last stop for people who have vision loss, one of only a few doctors in the world who specialize in fitting bioptic telescopes to help those who have lost vision due to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and other debilitating eye diseases.

Macular degeneration accounts for 90 percent of new legal blindness in the U.S. While there is currently no cure, promising research is being done on many fronts. "My job is to figure out everything and anything possible to keep a person functioning especially driving," said Dr. McDaniel.

Imagine a pair of glasses that can improve vision enough to actually change one's life. Low vision patients have probably not only imagined them, but have been searching for them. Bioptic telescopes may be the breakthrough in optical technology that will return the independence to whom once had it. Patients with vision in the 20/200 range can many times be improved to 20/50 or better. Macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in people over 50. Despite this, most adults are not familiar with the condition. As many as 25 percent of those over the age of 50 have some degree of macular degeneration. The macula is only one small part of the retina; however, it is the most sensitive and gives us sharp central vision. When it degenerates, macular degeneration leaves a blind spot right in the center of vision, making it difficult or impossible to recognize faces, read a book, or pass the driver's vision test.

"Bioptic telescopes can cost over $2,000," she said, "especially if we build them with an automatic sunglass. The major benefit of the bioptic telescope is that the lens automatically focuses on whatever you're looking at. It's like a self-focusing camera, but more precise." To learn more about the bioptic telescopes or to schedule a consultation, give the office of Dr. Marianne McDaniel a call at (618) 566-8899 and visit www.mascoutaheyecare.com. The office is located at 100 East Main Street in Mascoutah.

For Your Health: Staying Physically Active In The Time Of Coronavirus By Dr. Graham A. Colditz, Siteman Cancer Center

L

ike most other aspects of daily life, exercise and physical activity routines have been turned on their heads. Gyms are locked, exercise classes cancelled, and, depending on the location, even parks and walking paths are closed.

Download an app. Apps for smartphones and tablets can be a fantastic source of exercise content as well. They can range from straightforward apps that offer basic functions to those that have a lot of bells and whistles. Many apps are free, or available as free versions. Because there are so many different types of apps available, and of varying quality, it can be helpful to research app reviews to help guide your choices.

It’s all for good reason, of course – working to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus. At the same time, it’s a big change that can make it that much harder to fit in something that has a lot of important benefits. On top of lowering the risk of multiple chronic diseases, physical activity also has great mental health benefits, giving a boost to mood and helping get us through these strange times that can be both stressful and tedious. So, whether or not you exercised regularly before physical distancing recommendations took hold, there are a lot of reasons to try to fit some amount of regular physical activity into your new schedule. Don’t worry so much about hitting recommended activity guidelines, it’s most important just to try to get some amount of movement in on most days. If having a specific goal motivates you, that’s wonderful. Standard recommendations are for 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity activity each week. If you’re new to exercise, start easy and build up slowly. If you have any questions or concerns about your health, talk to a healthcare provider. Try these handful of quick tips to keep you – and your family – moving. Since everyone’s situation is different, they may work best as jumping off points to further explore what works best for you. And most important of all, just try to have some fun with it. Stream online videos. There is a huge variety of exercise videos available online these days. YouTube is an extremely popular source for free videos. Streaming services, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media can be as well. Essentially, however you view online video, it’s likely those platforms will also have exercise videos to stream. Type whatever you’re looking for into the search bar – like, “cardio workout,”“stretching,”“dance,”“yoga” – and see what comes up. And don’t forget to search for your local gyms and instructors. Many are putting out their own at-home videos for clients, which can be a great way to stay connected with your local community.

Stand up. With most of us now spending a lot of time at home, it’s likely we’re also sitting a lot more than usual. So, one easy way to add a bit of extra activity – and an energy boost – to the day is to simply add some regular standing breaks. Set your phone to chime every 30 minutes to remind you to stand up for a quick 1 to 2-minute leg stretch. Or stand up when you’re playing with your cat, watching a TV show, or working on your computer. These are small things but, repeated, can add up to important amounts. Get outside – if allowed and safe. Things are changing quickly, but even in areas under stay-at-home orders, outdoor activities are still largely allowed as long as you keep to physical distancing guidelines and any other restrictions. This means activities like walking, running, and bike riding may be good options for many people. And even a brief trip outside for a walk can provide a healthy and welcome break after all the hours spent sheltering in place. We’re in a strange period right now and one that we’re allowed to feel frustrated with. Staying active can be a great help in getting through it all. While we may not be able to keep up our previous physical activity routines, with some creativity and planning we can still stay active and possibly even discover some new favorite workouts that we’ll keep up after things return to normal. In many ways, everyone is starting fresh – no matter how active we were previously. So, we’re all working through this together, while remaining apart for now. Dr. Graham A. Colditz, associate director of prevention and control at Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, is an internationally recognized leader in cancer prevention. As an epidemiologist and public health expert, he has a long-standing interest in the preventable causes of chronic disease. Colditz has a medical degree from The University of Queensland and a master’s and doctoral degrees in public health from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Art On The Square Founder Looks Ahead To 2021 Show By Suzanne Koziatek Contributing writer

A

fter the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of this year’s Art on the Square, founder and executive director Patty Gregory is disappointed, but looking ahead to the fine art show’s next milestone. “I think we made the right decision, as much as it broke my heart,” Gregory said. “Our hope is that people come back next year even stronger for our 20th anniversary – that we’ll have double the success next year.” Gregory and her team made the difficult decision in late March to cancel this year’s show, which had been set for May 15-17. “We started thinking about it back in February, but it took us about three weeks to make the decision,” she said. “We didn’t take it lightly.” The annual juried fine art show has an enormous economic impact in the Belleville area – more than $2 million a year is attributed to the art show via hotel rooms, food sales and other related business. Thanks to years of careful cultivation, the show also makes an impact in other ways. Artists showing their work that weekend spend time teaching in Metro East classrooms. Large sculptures have been installed throughout the

area, courtesy of the organization’s Sculpture in the City program. Over the past 19 years, the show has promoted Belleville as a city that loves the arts.

letter of thanks from the National Association of Independent Artists thanking them for treating the artists so fairly.

As she learned more about the virus’ expected arrival in this area, Gregory reached out to stakeholders – artists, sponsors and longtime patrons – to see if rescheduling the show later this summer would be a workable solution.

Gregory said Art on the Square’s benefactors have been equally supportive of the event. Some of the show’s biggest sponsors told Gregory to keep their contributions and put the money toward next year’s show. Purchasers of Art Cash – gift certificates that can be used at the show – were given the opportunity to cash their certificates in, but many chose to hold on to them (they will all be good at next year’s event).

Unfortunately, she said, all the possible dates would have conflicted with other major US art shows that her artists had committed to already. And it wasn’t certain that the coronavirus outbreak would be contained even by late summer. With major expenses coming due, Gregory and her committee decided to cancel. In doing so, they took steps to soften the blow to artists, who would be facing other cancellations as well. “We reimbursed the booth fees to the artists,” she said. “They were shocked that we did that – a lot of shows aren’t doing that. And we offered them an automatic invitation to next year’s show.”

Gregory still hopes to do something special for at least one group – the 2020 high school seniors from schools across the Metro East who would have been part of Art on the Square’s high school art exhibit and competition. “We’d like to do an exhibit, just for the seniors, since they won’t have an opportunity to show again.”

As a result, she said, she expects most of next year’s booths to be assigned this year.

Next year’s show will be a big one – 20 years after beginning on Belleville’s Public Square, the city will celebrate two decades of Art on the Square’s artistic impact. This year’s show was supposed to be French-themed, and Gregory has several large models of the Eiffel Tower sitting in storage.

Art on the Square also paid $50 to each artist to help defray their expenses. “It isn’t much, but we thought it would help.” Gregory said Art on the Square received a

“I’m trying to think what I’ll do with five or six Eiffel Towers,” she said with a laugh. “We might have to figure out a theme that will still have Paris in it.”

Project Soapful Getting Soap Into The Hands That Need It

W

hen faced with the disappointment of a canceled class trip, O’Fallon eighth grader Isabel (Bella) Wells was determined to turn a negative into a positive. Armed with spending money she had saved for her trip, she contemplated ways to help her community fight back against Covid 19. Soon after, she launched Project Soapful, a campaign to bring soap to those that are vulnerable or in need. She turned to Facebook (facebook.com/projectsoapful) to see if anyone else would be interested in donating. She immediately received donations from family, friends, and local residents. “It makes me so happy to think we might be able to prevent just one infection. Just one saved illness could have a snowball effect, and countless others might be saved from exposure.” said Wells. To date, Wells has received nearly $400 in donations, and is distributing hundreds of bottles of soap to those in need. When she grows up, Wells plans to pursue a degree in medicine. She was recently accepted into Washington University’s Middle School Summer Challenge, where she is excited to engage in new academic opportunities. Want to help Bella buy soap for those in need?
