Look As Young As You Feel As Naturally As Possible
K
risten M. Jacobs, M.D., the Medical Director of Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness, is a business owner and busy mom of two boys, who strives to practice what she preaches and aims to fight aging every step of the way. There is no need to “live with” your lines, sun spots or other skin concerns for that matter. Many women say they are “proud of their lines and wrinkles” and that is OK. We even hear Moms refer to lines on their forehead and around the eyes as “Mom lines.” The exciting news is there are plenty of options for those of us who want to maintain a youthful appearance and get rid of “Mom lines” as naturally as possible. There are a variety of procedures that can transform your face and skin, including ultherapy, botox and fillers, and SkinMedica skincare products. The best part of today’s anti-aging treatments is there is less emphasis on surgical procedures and more emphasis on noninvasive procedures. In the past, patients waited until it was absolutely necessary “to go under the knife”; however, now we can treat issues as they arise with in-office procedures that require very little, if any, downtime. “When a patient comes to visit me, I look at them as a whole. I will map out a treatment plan of available options to give him or her the best possible result.” Dr. Jacobs is a Botox and Juvederm Trainer, and known for her natural, comprehensive approach to skin care. “Don’t be surprised if I talk to you about nutrition, skin care AND procedures. The choice is ultimately yours, but it’s my job to educate you and tell you what is available.” In addition to the spa and anti-aging business at Ooh La La, Dr. Robert Wise (Dr. Jacobs’ husband) offers the wellness component of good health through chiropractic care, acupuncture, auriculotherapy and his comprehensive Detox Program.
Here are 5 ways a detox program benefits the body: 1. A Detox Program Can Improve Circulation: An increase in circulation helps deliver oxygen-rich blood flow throughout the body. This helps to flush toxins and delivers important immune cells to help fight infection more effectively. 2. A Detox Program Can Improve Skin Elasticity: When cells are purified, it may become easier to generate new tissue. That is why a detox cleanse can contribute to the generation of new, healthy skin cells helping to maintain a youthful glow. 3. A Detox Program Can Increase Your Energy: When the body is full of toxins, it works overtime to eliminate those toxins. This can make for feelings of tiredness and sluggishness because valuable energy resources are being used to fight off these toxins. 4. A Detox Program Promotes Faster Healing: Certain toxins are known to cause inflammation and disease. When the body is rid of cell-damaging free radicals, the immune system is naturally strengthened. 5. A Detox Program Has Anti-Aging Benefits: When a person is rid of damaging toxins, they will experience an overall sense of greater wellbeing. In addition, increased energy levels are often reported after a detox program, which leads to feeling younger! Gift Cards Available for Mother’s Day! Call Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging & Wellness at (618) 288-9117 to schedule a Complimentary Skin Consultation. Visit the website at kristenjacobs.com. Worried Your Child Will Be Left Behind? • Find it harder to read at the end of the day than in the morning? • Skip words or repeat lines when reading out loud to you? • Reverse letters like b's into d's when reading? • Have a short attention span?
If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a fully correctable vision problem. Please don’t assume your child is not at risk because the results of the last vision screening came through OK. To be sure your child has all the visual skills required for reading and learning, schedule a developmental vision evaluation (this is different than a regular eye exam and is typically performed by a Developmental Optometrist).
A
re you concerned about whether or not your child will be left behind? Are you worried he or she might need to attend Summer school? All too often a child is left back with the hope that the second time through a light bulb will suddenly go off. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work. The following is an important message for parents. When a child is struggling with schoolwork - despite all best attempts to help - there is a strong possibility that he or she may be struggling with a vision problem. Before you say, “Not my child, he has perfect vision,” please keep reading. As soon as parents and educators hear that a child can see 20/20, they assume the child has “perfect vision,” which couldn’t be further from the truth. All it means is that child can see the size of letters that are supposed to be seen from a distance of 20 feet. This is only ONE of over 15 visual skills critical to reading and learning.
If a vision problem is at the root of your child’s difficulties, there is hope that there will be a positive end to all the struggling. Schedule a developmental vision evaluation for your child today. Taking action today could make next school year much easier for everyone. For a more in-depth symptom checklist or more information about the critical link between vision and learning, please visit www.ungereyecare.com, or call (618) 667-2020.
From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.
Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading? • Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD? • Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?
According to Dr. Thomas Unger, a developmental optometrist in Troy, “If a child is missing even one of these visual skills, reading and learning can become difficult. If a child is missing more, reading can be nearly impossible.” If your child struggles with reading, you need to know the symptoms of a vision problem because children rarely tell their parents they are having trouble seeing. Here are some of the more common symptoms. Does your child:
• Get frustrated when trying to read or do homework? • Take much longer doing his/her homework than it should? • Have a “tracking” problem? • Have trouble making out words? • “Forget” to bring homework assignments home?
ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100% correctable vision-based learning
problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a
Developmental Vision Evaluation.

PTOEC Offers Fun, Socialization and Sports Opportunities Including Special Olympics Formed over 40 years ago, the PTOEC - Parent Teacher Organization For Exceptional Children - was founded to provide sporting and recreational activities, socialization and instructional opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities in the Metro East. Governed by a board of 10 interested citizens along with several important volunteers and athletic directors, their core service is to provide high-quality, diverse sports activities through Special Olympics.
PTOEC offers plenty of other local activities to their members like Fun Nights featuring food, games, dancing and socializing. There is also an end of the year Sports Banquet to honor the Special Olympic athletes, coaches and volunteers for their hard work.
"We offer 12 sports now, which is so wonderful," said Board Vice President Tom Biondo. "Most of our 162 members participate in 2 to 4 different sports throughout the year."
In the summer, a three-week Summer Day Camp provides exciting learning experiences with art projects, play games and educational field trips throughout St. Louis. The camp is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday in June. Visit the web site to sign up!
Those sports supported in the Metro East today by PTOEC include basketball, bocce, bowling, flag football, golf, gymnastics, snowshoeing, soccer, softball, swimming, track and field, and volleyball. Each sport is conducted during their respective season and all but two go on to compete in either the state Illinois Olympic games in Normal during the summer, the winter games in Galena, fall games in Rockford or other state competitions.
Of course they rely on volunteers, and families of members to help supervise all of their events and programs. “Not all volunteers and coaches are parents or family members, they just help out because they enjoy the kids and the experience,” Biondo said.
Interestingly, the first Special Olympics games in the country were at Soldier Field in Chicago in 1968. Since that time, Special Olympics chapters have been established in all 50 states and approximately 150 countries. For almost all of PTOEC’s duration, their members have been proud participants in the Special Olympics Illinois. The 2015 Summer Games are June 12-14 in Normal. The Illinois state games have a grand opening ceremony as athletes file in to the stadium with fantastic lights and music, and culminate with the lighting of the torch that is carried through the state prior to the games via The Law Enforcement Torch Run. “Illinois has just about 22,000 athletes, which is second only to California,” Biondo said. “This year the international games will be in Los Angeles and we are so happy to be sending soccer player Anthony Cahoon, from Marissa, and three coaches from our area.” In total, Special Olympics Illinois has 15 athletes and eight coaches that have been named to Special Olympics USA. The 491 member delegation will represent the United States at the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games, being held July 25 through August 2, 2015, in Los Angeles. In addition, five residents from Illinois will officiate at the Games. The coaches chosen to participate in the international games go through quite a competition themselves, as there are thousands of qualified coaches around the world who would love to participate. The three coaches going from the Metro East this year are Jeff Price for the fourth time (1999, 2003, 2011, 2015), swimming; Jennifer Hitt, gymnastics; and Anthony’s soccer coach, Rich Carothers, who will be coaching for the third time (1999, 2006, 2015). Biondo’s daughter, Emily, earned the opportunity to participate on the gymnastics team in the past summer games four years ago in Athens, Greece when she was 18 years old. “The experience was incredible for her and they really go off on their own – we didn’t see her for a week or so before the competition.”
But they must rely on a small membership fee, grants from The Knights of Columbus, United Way and Variety the Children’s Charity, plus PTOEC fund raising to support all of these fabulous activities and events. Local fund raisers that the public is invited to participate in are things like a car wash that will be in a Belleville Fire House in the next few months, mouse races, the annual tootsie roll drive and an upcoming book sale. Check the web site for those dates in the coming months. On a statewide level, “The Illinois Special Olympics organization is really good to raise enough money to pay for our athletes and coaches,” Biondo said. “We are lucky because most states don't help with that funding. Everyone is likely familiar with the Polar Plunge that takes place across the state and gets a lot of media attention. This year, 7,610 individuals took the plunge and raised more than $2 million!” The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the single largest year-round fundraising event to benefit Illinois Special Olympics. The annual intrastate relay and its various fundraising projects (like the Polar Plunge) have two goals: to raise money and to gain awareness for the athletes who participate in Special Olympics Illinois. The Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised nearly $28 million over 27 years while increasing awareness of Special Olympics Illinois athletes and their accomplishments. Approximately 3,000 officers representing every branch of law enforcement across the state from local police officers to FBI agents will carry the Flame of Hope nearly 1,500 miles, running through thousands of Illinois communities via 23 different legs (routes) to its final destination: the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games in June in Normal.

or 85 years, St. Paul’s Home has been a leader in the field of caring for the aged in Southern Illinois and has provided one of the most reputable nursing homes and apartment communities in the country. Opening its doors for the first time in 1926 with 13 residents, St. Paul’s has grown exponentially over the ensuing decades and as the need for more space and services continued, the community has always been there to lend a hand. Though the history of the facility is associated with the ministry of the church bearing the same name, St. Paul’s Home is its own entity and serves the greater Belleville ecumenical community welcoming residents of any faith. Today, St. Paul’s Home is the only faith-based, not-for-profit, person-centered-care retirement community in the area that serves Medicare and Medicaid residents.
Once again, in response to a growing need, St. Paul’s is constructing a brand new retirement community that is designed for the residents to “age in place,” said Debra Pierce, Community Outreach Director. Meaning, the retirement apartments are part of a “Continuing Care Retirement Community.” If a resident should need nursing, shelter, rehab, memory or respite care, it is all contained within the premises. The St. Paul’s Home Board of Directors carefully examined how to best care for senior citizens today and in the future. After reviewing the results from a capital asset evaluation study and a market feasibility study, the board determined that it was cost prohibitive to renovate the current building, therefore plans moved forward to construct a new facility in the same location it has been for eight decades. “I have always personally valued the care and service at St. Paul’s Home,” said Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert. “In fact, my first job was at St. Paul’s. Before working many years for Pete Gaerdner making many ambulance calls to St. Paul’s Home, I taught Sunday school there for nearly seven years. Years later, my father was a resident at St. Paul’s Home before he passed away in 2001. From then until now, the quality of care at St. Paul’s Home has been outstanding throughout its history.
“I cannot thank enough the experienced and devoted staff, and those who have provided their time and efforts to St. Paul’s Home,” Eckert continued. “Without such hard work, we may not have this chance to add the new, up-to-date facility in our area. Keeping St. Paul’s Home in Belleville not only keeps our elderly close to home, but it assures families that their loved ones are in good hands.” This state-of-the-art facility will have a skilled nursing section with short- and long-term rehab rooms, a memory care unit and sheltered care (assisted living). Private and companion rooms will be available. A key feature of the new facility will be its division into six “neighborhoods.” Each neighborhood will include a kitchen and dining room, and a living room area, much like the homes to which residents are accustomed. The neighborhood concept is a new approach among nursing homes designed to foster a more home-like, resident-focused environment that encourages spontaneity and close relationships between staff and other residents. This concept also gives residents more choices and control over their lives. Staff are permanently assigned to each neighborhood and empowered to meet individual resident needs. Research shows that this method has led to improvements in performance and quality, reduced deficiencies and complaints, higher resident satisfaction and lower staff turnover. While St. Paul’s Home has always truly been a home, the new facility will provide better physical accommodations and a more comfortable, satisfying and supportive environment for all who live there. There are still sponsorship opportunities available for individuals and businesses alike. For more information, please call Debra Pierce at (618) 233-2095 or visit www. stpaulshome.com. The home is located at 1021 West E Street, Belleville.

ART ON THE SQUARE COMES TO LIFE MAY 15-17
HGTV Star Tiffany Brooks
Participants will enjoy many new artists and HGTV Star Tiffany Brooks The much-anticipated 14th Annual Art on the Square is set to open at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 15 and continue throughout the weekend around Downtown Belleville’s Veteran’s Memorial Fountain. Since its inception in 2002, Art on the Square has received national recognition as one of the top-ranked art shows in the nation. The nationally renowned Art Fair Source Book has ranked Art on the Square the Number 1 Art Show in the nation for the years 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012. This same publication has recognized Art on the Square as the 2nd Art Show in the Nation for 2013, 2014 and again this year in 2015. This ranking is based solely on sales from the 105 artists in attendance who provide their sales information to AFSB. For the last seven years, Art on the Square has exceeded over $1,000,000 in sales, garnering this distinguished designation. Over 900 artists applied this year for the prestigious honor of becoming one of the professionally juried 103 to show. “We are so excited this year because 65 percent of the artists are brand new to our show,” said Executive Director Patty Gregory. “While we have always had artists from 49 states, Canada, Europe and the Middle East, we have an artist from Belgium this year! Everyone is looking forward to introducing all these new artists to the Metro East.” The artwork of those selected will highlight both traditional and abstract two- and three-dimensional art in the following mediums: Oil/ Acrylics, Watercolor, Photography, Glass, Jewelry, Clay, Drawing, Sculpture, Fine Craft, Mixed Media, Wood and Digital art. The artists in attendance have the opportunity to be awarded over $30,000 in prize money each year. The “square” or Veteran’s Memorial Fountain is the perfect backdrop to showcase the works of these incredible artists all weekend long. Patrons can also experience first class entertainment located on both the Main Stage and the Wine Court and Jazz Entertainment areas. Families are encouraged to bring their little one’s who will love all the fun hands-on projects in the Children’s Garden of Art. This year, the kids’ area includes make-it-and-take-it crafts, hands-on mural and mosaic painting, a group project from the Saint Louis Zoo and other fun picture opportunities. Always a favorite, the McKendree University Living With Art: Interior Design Stage will feature the wonderfully talented Tiffany Brooks, HGTV Design Star winner and celebrity. Festival goers will have the opportunity to see her on stage both Saturday and Sunday, teaching attendees how to use art work from the show in their very own homes. Other local, professional designers will be presenting as well.
A new facet of the Living With Art schedule this year is demonstrations by area florists who will use a piece of art as inspiration for their own floral creation. The Living Art Interior Design Stage:

This exhibit is the largest High School exhibit of fine art in the area and features the work of over 42 local High School Art Programs, and gives the students not only an opportunity to display their work in a nationally recognized show, but it also gives the professional artists in attendance a chance to interact with the students and provide constructive critique to enhance their future in art aspirations. Prizing is also awarded in this division of the show. All events are FREE and open to the public. FREE Shuttle service is also provided to the show from the MetroLink's Belleville Scheel Street location. DockDogs To Headline Splash for Rescues Event On May 15-17
J
oin Camp Bow Wow and the Belleville Area Humane Society for their biggest event of the year: Splash for Rescues at Camp Bow Wow, 129 Corporate Drive in Swansea. Come meet adoptable pups, have a tasty lunch, buy T-shirts and best of all, check out the amazing feats of professionally trained Gateway DockDogs! Amateurs are also welcome to bring their canines for some leaps into the pool for a small fee. Entrance to the general event is free. This year there will be an additional special event called the “Duck Raffle.” For $10 a duck, participants can enter to win awesome prizes, including a grand prize of $1,000. The DockDogs will be fetching the winning ducks out of the pool on May 17 at approximately 3 p.m. All proceeds go to the shelter. Entries to the raffle can also be done at Tribout’s in Belleville, Camp Bow Wow or online at www.bahspets.com. The sport of “dock diving,” and this event, is presented by Gateway DockDogs that will showcase some of the top dogs in the country on May 15, 16, and 17. These “flying” dogs will jump off of a 40-foot-long dock into an approximately 4-foot-deep pool to compete for distance (the “Big Air” competition), height (called “Extreme Vertical”) and speed (“Speed Retrieve”).
While dogs from around the country will be in attendance, the competition is open to dogs of all sizes and breeds. There are basically two criteria: the dog must be at least six months old and the handler (the person jumping the dog) must be a minimum of seven years old. Other than that, the rules are pretty simple. Some dogs compete in all three of these competitions and may then compete for the coveted title of Iron Dog. There will be seven “waves” at Camp Bow Wow’s Splash for Rescues competition. Each wave is its own competition, with ribbons awarded in each of several divisions, depending on distance jumped. The dogs that score in the top six places in each of these divisions will compete in the finals competition on Sunday. There are also finals competitions for lap dogs, youth handlers and dogs over 8 years of age. The extreme vertical competition is a process of elimination and is the headline event starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday night. Always a great time for a great cause, contact Paul Stroh at Camp Bow Wow for additional information: (618) 803-9247. Competition rules, the schedule and sign-up information can also be found at www.dockdogs.com.

Hearthside Announces Announces Its Hearthside ItsNewest NewestDivision: Division: OutdoorFurniture FurnitureCollections Collections Outdoor
A
n ongoing theme throughout the home improvement industry and throughout this magazine is the idea of a “stay-cation.” Instead of going on an elaborate vacation, many homeowners are investing more into their home’s back-yard aesthetics to create outdoor living areas for family and friends.
As the market and technology changed, so did Midwestern Propane Gas Company. In the 1960s, sales of gas grills and gas logs were added to their services and by the mid-1980s, demand for high-quality leisure products grew exponentially and Hearthside Grill & Fireplace, Ltd. was born in 2000.
Hearthside Grill and Fireplace is pleased to announce the arrival of their premium outdoor furniture collections including the upscale Agio and Pride Family Brands. “We are embracing the entire outdoor living theme,” said Mark Urban, owner of Hearthside. “Many customers have been asking us for an entire theme or design for their outdoor patios rather than just placing a grill on their deck. So we now offer outdoor kitchens and built-in grills, refrigerators, beer taps and built-in ice buckets, audio and visual systems, fireplaces and more.”
Taking over ownership from his uncles Darrell and Don Urban, who were the third generation owners of the company, Mark Urban said in addition to their showroom inside the store, they will also have an outdoor showroom to display their newly acquired durable furniture pieces that range from casual to elegant.
A popular trend on the coasts for 10 years, it’s now in full-swing here, Urban said, “and I have been in enough homes delivering grills and here comes a company from St. Louis doing the rest! So the outdoor furniture has definitely been something I have wanted to do for a while.” Midwestern Propane Gas Co. is a long-time business in Belleville dating all the way back to 1936 in the downtown area. Founders A.J. and Martha Urban first opened as a butane retailer, which at that time was the “new” energy fuel for cooking and heating. They had customers from Chicago all the way to Cairo. The business thrived as the Urbans established a reputation for dependability and service throughout the state and in the early 1950s, the company moved to its present location on South Belt East near Belle-Clair Fairgrounds.
Of course the charming fireplace and grill showroom highlights all the different products for which they are well-known. Interestingly, web sites such as Pinterest inspire do-it-yourselfers to come in with a plan in hand and the staff at Hearthside helps them with their list. “But there are those customers who are not as handy, and we can do the whole project from start to finish – and now, inside and out.” The showroom also showcases all manner of grilling accessories perfect for the outdoor chef in your life: tool sets, rubs, sauces, gloves, gift sets, cookbooks, grill gadgets, aprons, thermometers and so much more. Of course there are gift certificates available.

Win The War Against Disease-Carrying Mosquitoes
D
aily headlines warn about the dangers of mosquitoes particularly this year after an unusually warm winter and spring. Yes, mosquitoes are merely annoying but they are also blood-sucking transmitters of deadly disease. In fact, many scholars theorize that the mosquito is responsible for more human deaths throughout history than any other organism.
Armed and at the ready to protect you and your family is Mosquito Squad serving Madison, St. Clair and Monroe counties.“The breeding cycle begins when the temperature is a constant 60 degrees and above,” said Gary Alves, co-owner of Mosquito Squad along with his son, Ben. “The ‘usual’ time frame for spraying is May through October.” “What sets Mosquito Squad apart from other treatments is that it specifically focuses on mosquitoes,” he said. “The company has done extensive research on mosquitoes and has developed the chemicals necessary to reduce the insect’s population by 85 to 90%. We know how they breed and precisely where to apply the spray.”
The 5 T’s of Mosquito Protection for every homeowner to reduce the annoyance of mosquitoes:
Tip: Tip over items in your yard to reduce standing water; eliminate breeding sources such as children’s toys, plant saucers, dog bowls. Toss: Remove excess grass clippings, leaves and sticks in all areas that are prime breeding for mosquitoes. Turn: Turn over larger yard items that can hold water; any item that holds water and becomes stagnant Tarps: Either remove or keep taut to eliminate water holding areas Treat: Utilize Mosquito Squad’s Barrier protection program; Using a barrier treatment at home reduces the need for spraying a bug spray containing Deet on you and your children
Call Mosquito Squad today at (618) 409-6465.
Mosquito Squad has a number of different types of treatment from the traditional barrier spray which is effective up to 21 days, a platinum spray every two weeks, misting systems that spray three to four times a day, and a special event one-time spray. They also offer an all-natural spray. ONE“Realistically OF THE LARGEST we can’t eliminate 100% of mosquitoes, but we do have one of the most DISPLAYS OF APPLIANCES effective in the area which has been proven across the country,” Alves said. “In IN THE METRO treatments EAST

your air conditioner’s $44 best friend is a SPENGLER PRECISION TUNE-UP The Best Way to Guarantee Efficient, Reliable, Worry Free Air Conditioning is to schedule a precision tune up before it heats up. If you own a car you probably don’t think twice about taking it into the shop for periodic tune-ups. After all, everybody wants a smooth enjoyable ride and nobody wants to experience unexpected breakdowns. Common-sense tells you that the best way to keep your car performing at its best is to schedule regular maintenance.

The same applies to your air conditioning. Like your car, your air conditioner is a hard-working machine. It generates a lot of heat and has many moveable parts. It requires fluids and lubricants. Air conditioners are exposed to the elements, they collect dust and dirt and are subject to immeasurable wear and tear. In order to keep your air conditioning system working at its most efficient and economical, you should give it regular tune-ups and maintenance. Unfortunately, most homeowners don’t do so. In a recent survey, over 55% of air conditioning owners do not schedule regular tune-ups for their air conditioning systems and units. Not coincidentally, over half of all A/C users express dissatisfaction with the performance of their air conditioner and its cost to operate. Furthermore, service records show that most major and costly air conditioning repairs could have been prevented or detected early with a simple annual tune-up. Plus studies show, when you’re A/C unit is performing at its best it will lead to lower utility bills by up to 30%! By tuning up your air conditioner, you greatly increase the chances that your A/C technician will catch small problems before they become big ones. Repairing a small refrigerant leak that’s caught during a tune-up shouldn’t cost much more than the service call itself. On the other hand, buying a new compressor when low refrigerant levels burn your current one out, however, can cost a thousand dollars or more. What would you rather pay for — an ounce of prevention now or a pound of cure later? Precision tune-ups ensure that your A/C unit is working at optimal efficiency. When your A/C is running well, it uses less energy to cool your home. Lower energy use means bigger savings for you on your monthly utility bills. Bottom Line: An air conditioner tune-up will save you lots of money in both the long and short term…and provide you with a worry free summer! There’s no doubt about it: a precision tune-up for your air conditioner is the simplest and best thing you can do to guarantee that your air conditioner will keep you comfortable all summer long and your best assurance that small problems don’t develop into bigger, more expensive headaches later on. Schedule Your Air Conditioner Safety and Professional Cleaning Today! To ensure worry-free, money-saving operation, schedule an air conditioning precision tune-up today! Spengler Plumbing, Heating and Cooling is a locally owned and operated for over 44 years. Call 618-589-2185 today to schedule your appointment or log onto spenglerco.com to learn more.
