24th Annual House Raffle Is Underway At Big Brothers Big Sisters
F
or more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. BBBS develops positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. Recently, “Big Sister” Dr. Pamela Manning and her “Little” Keywanna Strong, 17, met at the new Fulford Homes Parkview Meadows development where the winner of the 24th Annual House Raffle will build their new dream home. The two are indeed like sisters and have been together for six years now. “We met on April 2, 2012 and I have followed her through different schools - she just graduated from Civic Memorial High School and plans to go to Lewis and Clark this fall to begin her nursing degree!” Dr. Manning said. The two enjoy seeing the sites in St. Louis, dining out at new places and simply spending time together in person or on the phone. “We support each other,” she said with a smile and a hug to Keywanna. “At least once per week we try our best to get together - I just love her so much.” Dr. Manning said it’s been amazing to know all that “Key" has gone through in such a relatively short time and yet, “she has the ability to see the positive
in all things - I am super super proud of Key - she’s an extension of my own family." Calling Dr. Manning “Sis,” Keywanna said, “she is always there for me even when she’s out of town - she gives me every bit of her time when she has it - she never turns me down. My mom loves her, too, and we appreciate everything she does for me!" "God put us here for a reason,” Dr. Manning said. The Southwestern Illinois agency, located in Belleville, has served more than 450 youth in Clinton, Madison, Monroe and St. Clair counties in the past year with one-to-one matches such as Dr. Manning and Keywanna. Currently there are 65 youth between the ages of six and 14 who are waiting for a Big Brother or Big Sister. If a person is interested in becoming a "Big," they will go through an extensive background check and careful interview process. Then Bigs and Littles are matched based on location, personalities and preferences. Full support is provided from the start, so matches can grow into lasting, fruitful friendships. It’s also important to note that the entire matching process is made possible through donations. Thus, the current campaign for the 24th Annual House Raffle is set and only 3,900 certificates will be sold at $100 each. There are also 46 other prizes awarded. To purchase a house certificate, call (618) 398-3162 to charge your credit card; or purchase online at bbbsil.org; or visit the office at 2726 Frank Scott Parkway West in Belleville.
The Whitney At Parkview Meadows Could Be Yours! The new Parkview Meadows is directly across from O’Fallon’s Family Sports Park on Oberneufemann Road. This neighborhood of single-family homes is perfect for the growing family. “The winner will get to customize The Whitney ranch-style home to suit, choosing colors, etc.,” said Andrea West of Fulford Homes. “In the meantime, visitors are encouraged to visit the model home already constructed at Parkview Meadows.” The model home is a two-story, four-bedroom floor plan called The Jefferson. Built with all the most up-to-date features, including a fabulous kitchen, visitors will see in person the quality that Fulford offers. House certificates can also be purchased here with Sales Manager Austin Stanley. To get there, take North Green Mount Road straight across the roundabout onto Oberneufemann Road; the community is just 1/4 mile ahead on the right.

The Pool Is Custom-Made For Treating Bone Density Loss & Balance Historically, aquatic exercise has never been considered as a viable method to combat bone loss. Think about it. Any exercise program designed to retard the rate of bone loss (or increase the rate of bone growth) must consider: the frequency and duration of the activity, the ground reaction forces (GRF) created during the activity, the amount of muscle-bone tension created during the activity, and the patient’s age at the time of activity. Because immersion can diminish weight bearing forces by more than 90%, aquatic-based exercise has always been seen as a poor substitute for weight-bearing tasks, such as walking. However, this perspective has changed dramatically over the last decade for multiple reasons. First, individuals who are unable to weight bear easily or comfortably under gravity’s full brunt, can easily do so when immersed to chest-level in water. Second, individuals who choose to not exercise regularly on land, due to pain, fatigue or other factors, may be willing to do so in the water. Third, the study of aquatic plyometrics has shown clinicians that it is possible to execute speed, power and other explosive activities in water; and moreover, that these activities result in similar athletic gains as their land-based counterparts, without the incidence of injury.
Lastly, while the argument that exercise in the water will produce less weight-stressors is technically true, this argument ignores all other mechanisms by which the body lays down bone. For example, muscle pull on bone is an excellent stimulus for bone growth. Exercise in the viscous medium of a swimming pool produces drag… and drag produces resistance… and resistance creates muscle pull. End result? More bone. While it is true that immersion can diminish weight bearing forces by more than 90%, aquatic-based exercise is no longer considered a non-starter when working with patients with bone loss. In fact, you might say it has come full circle; aquatic exercise has finally achieved the “gravity” it deserves. This content is courtesy of the National Swimming Pool Foundation. The Top 5 Reasons Your Child Needs An Eye Exam impede learning can be corrected – once they are detected,” shared Dr. Thomas Unger, an optometrist with an office in Troy.
Please take a moment to review the signs that indicate vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties: • headaches when reading • slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • avoidance of reading • poor reading comprehension • frequent loss of place while reading • complains words move on the page • short attention span • smart in everything but school • labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic • working below potential

ummer is finally here. As your family calendar becomes full of summer events and you start to schedule those Back to School appointments for your child’s upcoming school year, are you sure you haven’t forgotten something important? What about your child’s eyes? Vision problems can affect more than just seeing the board or reading a book.
Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist. Please take the time to learn more about the vital role vision plays in your child’s academic performance, it could make all the difference. For more information or to schedule an appointment, Dr. Unger can be reached at: (618) 667-2020.
Research has shown that vision problems can: 1. interfere with academic performance 2. slow down overall development 3. cause a short attention span 4. make reading difficult 5. result in lowered self-esteem It’s usually pretty easy to tell when your child has difficulty seeing things in the distance (such as the board in school), but most parents don’t know what to look for to determine when a child has difficulty seeing the words in a book. There are so many potential explanations for why a child struggles with reading that parents often lose sight of the obvious. Many parents mistakenly assume that the vision screenings are the same as a complete eye examination, and incorrectly assume that their child’s vision is fine when they pass the screening. According to the American Optometric Association, approximately one out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems; and three out of five children with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems. “Whether your child is a bright underachiever, struggles with reading or has developmental delays, the good news is the majority of vision problems that

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?
• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?
ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%
correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

b2b Obviously Hodgkins’ experience in the pest control business qualifies him as an expert, but he said, “Honestly, I have learned a lot from my mistakes and literally studied books and manuals on pests, and pest control. A key to my experience, too, is involvement in the state and national Pest Control Associations,” he continued. “I have been a board member on Illinois Pest Control Association since 1987 and treasurer since 1995.” Such involvement has been a tremendous resource to BEL-O Pest as Hodgkins has had the opportunity to help write Illinois state law for pest control within the Illinois Structural Pest Control Act. This act governs all pest control within the state.

“Since most suppliers pick up the fee it doesn’t cost anything to save money,” said Mike Grimes, president of commercial Energy Consultants. “For example, I worked with a bar owner who was already in arrears with the incumbent utility. Be careful, some suppliers take advantage of the uninformed Facebook.com/Marketplace Magazine. or the chosen company might not be financially stable.” “I recommend using a consultant such as Commercial Energy Consultants (CEC) that has been working with energy deregulation for the last five years. We have 900 million kilowatts under contract and over 6600 client relationships,” he continued. “Use a consultant because we have the knowledge to garner the lowest bid from all available suppliers. The consultant regularly contacts suppliers, asks for bids on the consumer’s particular residential/commercial need and delivers the lowest bid. This process takes the hassle out of working directly with the supplier.” Recently Grimes met with a busy school administrator who had been given the task to deregulate. She had received a couple solicitations in the mail and talked to one supplier but realized there are more than 20 suppliers approved by her state. “She called my company and hired us to find the supplier. It took about a week and didn’t cost the school a penny. CEC delivered the low bid and save d the school thousands of dollars each month,” he said. Not sure it’s time to replace the flooring, but it needs sprucing up? Consider McCullough’s professional floor care services.
A
t McCullough’s Flooring – now in business for 27 years – Owner Tracy McCullough said, “We are a full-service flooring company, from purchase to installation to maintenance. We want to make sure people know that our floor care services are available to everyone, not just our customers that purchase flooring from us.” Why have floors professionally cleaned? Homeowners are relieved of the labor and/or worry about damaging them. Professional cleanings leave carpets soft, the texture restored, the colors brightened and thus better able to withstand future soiling. It improves indoor air quality by removing the airborne pollutants that get trapped inside the carpet. Did you know that without documentation of proper upkeep on your carpet, the manufacturer may not honor your warranty? Why Choose McCullough’s? “We know floors! We sell and install all types of flooring. We know exactly what to use so that we do not damage them,” McCullough said. Their equipment is state-of-the-art. All the heavy equipment stays in the truck meaning nothing enters the home except the operator with a cleaning wand and long hose. In addition, McCullough’s does not sub contract any of their work; all of the technicians are McCullough’s employees. Each technician went through intensive training to become IICRC certified and stays current with all new cleaning technologies.
Employees at McCullough’s are held to the highest standard of professionalism. They are respectful, friendly and trustworthy, so there’s no need to be nervous about them entering the home. Technician Don Winkeler said, “We use a warm water extraction to safely clean carpets as mandated by manufacturers. With our equipment, carpets dry quickly, stay cleaner and last longer. We bring our own pre-softened, environmentally safe water and do not use the customers’ water or disposal facilities. All the dirty water and unpleasant odor goes out through the sealed hose into the waste water tank in the cleaning van. There is no messy clean-up afterward and no danger of spillage in your home or office.” Aside from the floor care service, the McCullough’s also mentioned their Outlet Center. McCullough said, “I think our Outlet Center is a portion of our business that some people may not know exists. It is stocked with first quality styles at discounted prices. We have a large selection of carpet, ceramic, porcelain, luxury vinyl planks, sheet vinyl and laminate. It’s perfect for those DIY customers!” Please call (618) 234-5005 or visit 4400 North Belt West in Belleville for a FREE estimate on floor care (carpet, tile, upholstery and area rugs). www.mcculloughsflooring.com/floor-care.

popular system to literally thousands of residential and commercial jobs throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area.” The Pebblestone Epoxy System is applied directly over existing patios, driveways, pool decks, front porches and walkways, garage floors, basement floors, and commercial entranceways. Once again, in response to a growing need, St. Paul’s constructed a brand new retirement community designed for residents to age in place. Meaning, the retirement apartments are part of a “Continuing Care Retirement Community.” If a resident should need nursing, shelter, rehab, memory or respite care, it is all contained within the premises. The St. Paul’s Home Board of Directors carefully examined how to best care for senior citizens today and in the future. After reviewing the results from a capital asset evaluation study and a market feasibility study, the board determined that it was cost prohibitive to renovate the old building, therefore plans moved forward to construct the new facility in its same location where it has been for nine decades. “I have always personally valued the care and service at St. Paul’s Senior Community,” said Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert. “I cannot thank enough the experienced and devoted staff, and those who have provided their time and efforts to St. Paul’s. Without such hard work, we may not have had the chance to add the new, up-to-date facility in our area. Keeping St. Paul’s Senior Community in Belleville not only keeps our elderly close to home, but it assures families that their loved ones are in good hands.”

or 90 years, St. Paul’s Senior Community has been a leader in the field of caring for the aged in Southern Illinois and has provided one of the most reputable nursing homes and apartment communities in the country.
A key feature of the new facility is its division into six “neighborhoods.” Each neighborhood includes a kitchen and dining room, and a living room area, much like the homes to which residents are accustomed.
Opening its doors for the first time in 1926 with 13 residents, St. Paul’s has grown exponentially over the ensuing decades and as the need for more space and services continued, the community has always been there to lend a hand. Though the history of the facility is associated with the ministry of the church bearing the same name, St. Paul’s Senior Community is its own entity and serves the greater Belleville ecumenical community welcoming residents of any faith. Today, St. Paul’s Senior Community is the only faith-based, not-for-profit personcentered-care retirement community in the area that serves Medicare and Medicaid residents.
The neighborhood concept is a new approach among nursing homes designed to foster a more home-like, resident-focused environment that encourages spontaneity and close relationships between staff and other residents. This concept also gives residents more choices and control over their lives. *For more information, please call (618) 233-2095 or visit www.stpaulshome. com. T
Is A "Life Plan Community at the Shrine"
he Apartment Community is not under new ownership or management. They have simply changed the name to more closely reflect 1. Who they are - The Esquiline; 2. What they are - A Life Plan Community; and 3. Where they are: at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. When The Apartment Community first began, it truly was an apartment community. In other words, that was initially the only service offered. However, the community has since grown to include a full continuum of care. It’s now a Life Plan Community, meaning residents can enjoy not only independent apartment living, but also assisted living and skilled nursing services under one roof should they ever need it. Thus, to better express what The Esquiline does, the decision was made to change the name of the community. The story behind the name: In ancient Rome, Mary had a dream that a church would be built in her honor on a site covered with snow. She shared her dream with a Roman couple, who then shared it with others. Remarkably, one hot August morning, snow fell on Esquiline Hill, one of the seven celebrated hills of Rome. All of Rome proclaimed the summer snow a miracle, and a church was built on the hill to honor Mary. The National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows celebrates this story and their setting atop a hill on its stunning grounds makes “The Esquiline” the perfect name for the community.

QA &
with Copper Fire Co-Owner Brett Eichholz
C
opper Fire Co-owner, Brett Eichholz, pictured above left, took a few minutes out from preparations for a busy week to talk to us about the importance of service and communication with customers at Belleville's newest dining experience, Copper Fire Bar and Eatery. The new restaurant has been open for two months and has already become a place where friends return again and again for exciting food, fun drinks and live entertainment in a beautifully-adorned space. Brett tells us about the unique experience of dining with a group at Copper Fire's Chef's Table. The restaurant also features live music including an open-mic Wednesday featuring talented singers and songwriters, acoustic music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and a Karaoke DJ twice a month. Q: What is your number-one goal at Copper Fire? We want people to have a great time every time they come in. And we think the key to that is in hiring and training a great staff, and listening to our customers. Hiring and training is my job, and listening to our guests is what we all strive to do. We've been open two months. It's a new space with a very unique kitchen. Actually, we closed for a day last month and re-grouped with the staff. Our team is so important to us and we want to give them the tools to do their jobs better. Q: Tell us about the staff. I come from a family of business owners, so I've been able to see how they make business decisions and how important my parents feel about hiring the right people and valuing them. My family makes up Copper Fire's partnership and our managers, Travis, Andrea and Sierra, are passionate about giving guests a wonderful experience. We want to be examples of our value system for all of our staff. But we also understand the importance of structure. We want all our staff to be knowledgeable about our menu and our specials, and so we are happy to spend the time to train them properly. That's why when I'm in the building I'm constantly in the dining room meeting our guests to find out what made them happy and listening to what we can do better. Constant improvement should always be a goal.
Q: Does this mean limitations? It presents opportunities to approach our cooking differently and I think we come out in a better place. We had to re-imagine our approach to some of the menu items we otherwise might have fried or grilled. Our chefs have been studying these ovens and Unox takes advantage of technology to allow them to be in more command of the cooking process. We even have an app that allows us to analyze and actually program our cooking process for some of our recipes. In the end it's delicious, efficient and it's just healthier. There are no bad oils anywhere in our kitchen. Q: What are some of your own favorite dishes that are unique to Copper Fire? You have to experience our Beef Wellington. We take two fillets, wrap them in a buttery, puff pastry and top them with a delicious Merlot gravy. Our Lobster Rangoon is a favorite with everyone who tries it. Q: Tell us about the Chef's Table. That's unique on this side of the river, isn't it? One of the features we've always loved was the Chef's Table. These days everyone is a “Foodie. People want the full experience when it comes to dining. They want to know where their food comes from. They want it to be local. They want to know how it's prepared. We're proud of our chefs and our kitchen staff, and we want to show them off. Watching your food being prepared in a well-run kitchen can really add to the experience. Our Chef's Table can accommodate between 10 and 14 people. The room is semi-private and beautifully furnished. Our chef always makes it a point of coming out before the meal and meeting our guests, and answering any questions as well as stopping by afterward just to check in and make sure everything is to your liking. Q: So, dining at the Chef's Table at Copper Fire is a bit like attending a performance. Absolutely, we are building such a solid team in the front of the house and back, and when you love what you do you want to share it. To me there's nothing more special than going out with friends, detaching a little and having a nice meal at a fair price. You can make reservations for Copper Fire's Chef's Table by calling (618) 235-5010. The restaurant is at 200 E. Main St,; thecopperfire.com.
Q: You mentioned Copper Fire's unique kitchen. What sets it apart from other places in the St Louis area? Our guests might not be aware of this, but we only cook with Unox ovens. Early on, we had to make decisions about the kitchen and we asked ourselves why couldn't we move away from deep fryers and traditional grills, and not just add the Unox ovens, but completely rely on them.
