N
ow you can take your existing plain-Jane concrete from drab to fab without removing the old product. With today’s decorative concrete overlays, it’s easy to give almost any concrete surface both indoors or out, a complete face-lift at a much lower cost than removal and replacement. “We can take an ordinary concrete surface and turn it into a beautiful work of art that will complement the exterior of your home or business without any heavy equipment to damage the surrounding area,” said Keith Griffith, owner of Bricksn-Stones. “The real challenge is choosing from among the many resurfacing products available and the array of decorative finishes possible.” Bricks-n-Stones resurfacing works to beautify and restore your existing driveway, sidewalk or patio with an exclusive decorative overlay system. The materials used are extremely durable and resistant to salt, stain, UV and high traffic. In addition, they are easy to clean and virtually maintenance free. “These finishes can be professionally installed to match and enhance the existing landscaping and surroundings,” Griffith said. Time tested and contractor proven, Bricks-n-Stones products have been utilized for over three decades as permanent solutions to industrial, commercial and residential concrete surface defects and deterioration problems. A decorative overlay is literally a thin, permanent layer added to the top of a concrete slab. They can be used on new or existing concrete. When properly installed, a decorative concrete overlay will last a lifetime and never need replacement.

Pool Surrounds
Bricks-n-Stones offers specialized treatments for the concrete around pools that includes not only a slip-resistance texture on the overlay itself but it can lower the surface temperature of that particular concrete.
Polished Concrete
Increasingly popular within commercial and residential facilities is polished concrete: a process that enhances the natural beauty of existing concrete by hardening and polishing the concrete. The benefits of natural concrete are durability and aesthetic value. Polishing results in a smooth, sealed appearance. Polished concrete utilizes low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which makes it an environmentally friendly surface. There are no coatings applied such as epoxies, urethanes or waxes. In fact, polished concrete floors are recognized by the United States Green Building Council and LEED certification. Another benefit of polished concrete is lower maintenance cost. In high traffic areas such as garages, schools, hallways and corridors, polished concrete holds up better and lasts longer than traditional floor covering systems. Not only are polished concrete floors easy to clean, requiring only damp mopping, they can resist scuff marks and tire marks. Depending on the traffic, polished concrete needs only to be refinished once every one to five years. In addition, the downtime required for the polishing process is minimal, allowing service or traffic on the surface to begin almost immediately. For more information about decorative concrete overlays or polished concrete, call Bricks-n-Stones at (618) 363-0829; www.creativeconcretepros.com.

Zika, West Nile, Denque and Chikungunya are all viruses spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. While the Zika virus has not been found in mosquitoes in the United States yet, we strongly recommend training ourselves to be more aggressive on mosquito control. Eliminating standing water on your property is one of the most important actions a homeowner can do to help control mosquitoes.

Tara and Russ Davison joined the ownership group earlier this year and are carrying on the good name as second-generation owners. “We are excited to be a part of such a great company and Gary (McClure) still advises us when we need his help,” Tara Davison said. “Our customers receive the same excellent service including giving you a ‘mini-pool school’ before we leave so you know exactly how to maintain the pool plus the first winterization is included in the package.” Low maintenance is key with the installation of a fiberglass pool that comes in one piece combined with a saltwater pool system that enables the pool owner to change the chemistry with “the push of a button,” she said. “We believe you purchase a pool to have fun not to spend time messing with chemicals and cleaning.” The beauty of a fiberglass pool besides the low maintenance aspect is the lifetime warranty along with the fact that fiberglass does not need refinishing. Additionally, “a fiberglass pool can be installed more quickly than other types of pools,” Davison continued. “In fact, we can be in and out in seven to 10 days.” One of the fun parts of purchasing a pool is the design process and McClure-Davison offers the interactive “Pool Studio” that can actually show

Gives Families The Time To Enjoy Outdoor Amenities
S
ummertime is a fabulous time of the year in the stylish community of @Cloverdale located in the heart of the Edwardsville community with as many terrific features outside as inside the home. @Cloverdale, by Spencer Homes, is a neighbor to the Madison County Trails System and within walking distance to downtown, the movie theater, shopping, restaurants and easy access to Governors Parkway. The hallmark of an @Cloverdale home design is the front porch that functions as an extension of the home and is a perfect place for friends to gather. Indeed the community itself hearkens to days gone by when people had more time to just relax and visit with neighbors. Home prices are also more affordable and start in the $290,000s. Floor plans offered in @Cloverdale are single-family homes with choices of two, three or four bedrooms including singlestory, main-floor master and traditional two-story designs. All feature a luxurious master suite as well as open living spaces perfect for entertaining. Several plans offer a flex room appropriate for a home office, hobby room or guest accommodations. The signature of a Spencer Home, though, is the careful attention to detail like nooks and storage spaces, built-in alcoves, architectural features and stylish kitchens.
The customer experience at Spencer Homes offers the client technology tools, personal design service as well as the latest features and trends in oor plans that accommodate how people live today. In particular, Spencer Homes offers each client their own personal design and selections consultant as well as a 24/7 step-by-step web site for managing the custom home-build process. Within the client-secure site, which can be accessed right from their phone, tablet or laptop, customers are able to review and approve selections, view a construction calendar, communicate to their build team, share timeline photos with family and friends as well as see the up-to-date budget. Spencer Homes has been building quality custom homes since 2005 throughout the Metro East, with primary developments in Edwardsville, Glen Carbon and Troy. These towns are among the fastest growing communities in the St. Louis metropolitan area and for good reason. Located only 25 minutes from the Gateway Arch, these towns are well known for having reputable schools, a friendly "small town" atmosphere and a tremendous quality of life. Why Hire A Business Coach If It “Ain’t Broke?”
S
By Teresa A. Pedigo
mall Business Owners have a perception their status as “entrepreneurs” means they are supposed to be able to operate with total independence. After all, they go into business for themselves just to alleviate having a boss, right?
1. It’s lonely at the top. They have no one to talk to who understands. This can lead to anxiety, depression and withdrawal. 2. Employees can be high-maintenance. A successful small business can be held together by a strong leader, even though the leader suffers great frustration. The challenge is in creating a team that performs without such strong oversight and does so even when team members change, or, as the business grows. 3. Nothing stays the same. There will always be changes presenting new challenges. Technology changes cause us to adapt and learn new systems just to stay even with the competition. 4. The business has little value to someone else. It may provide the owner with the income desired, but how much will the business be worth to someone else when you decide to retire? If your business is your primary source of retirement income, is its value adequate to support the rest of your life?
So we become Small Business Owners. If lucky, we enjoy success, even comfort, in what our business contributes to our income, lifestyle and wealth. But if not, it’s easy to get used to a level of business we find acceptable. Therefore, the idea of engaging a Business Coach feels unnecessary, even wasteful. After all, it’s only businesses that are losing money or struggling that need the help - not us! It’s time for this myth to be dispelled. If you are successful and satisfied with your business, good for you! But in my experience nearly all Small Business Owners who claim such success are doing so only as a façade. There is always more happening “behind the scenes,” very often an undercurrent of dissatisfaction that they fear disclosing to anyone.
To quote my fellow AdviCoach Jerry Baltus: “In my experience, all businesses have some level of challenge or dissatisfaction that owners put up with, despite their frustration with it. Find a coach that you like and who seems to have the experience and understanding of your situation. Then share your journey with him or her, and accomplish even more than you ever could alone.” Some information for this article was provided by Jerry Baltus.
Here are just four reasons why even a Successful Business Owner might consider working with a Business Coach:

The Top 5 Reasons Your Child Needs an Eye Exam impede learning can be corrected – once they are detected,” shared Dr. Thomas Unger, an optometrist with an office in Troy.
Please take a moment to review the signs that indicate vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties: • headaches when reading • slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • avoidance of reading • poor reading comprehension • frequent loss of place while reading • complains words move on the page • short attention span • smart in everything but school • labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic • working below potential
S
ummer is finally here. As your family calendar becomes full of summer events and you start to schedule those Back to School appointments for your child’s upcoming school year, are you sure you haven’t forgotten something important? What about your child’s eyes? Vision problems can affect more than just seeing the board or reading a book. Research has shown that vision problems can: 1. interfere with academic performance 2. slow down overall development 3. cause a short attention span 4. make reading difficult 5. result in lowered self-esteem
Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist. Please take the time to learn more about the vital role vision plays in your child’s academic performance, it could make all the difference. For more information or to schedule an appointment, Dr. Unger can be reached at: (618) 667-2020.
From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.
Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading? • Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD? • Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?
It’s usually pretty easy to tell when your child has difficulty seeing things in the distance (such as the board in school), but most parents don’t know what to look for to determine when a child has difficulty seeing the words in a book. There are so many potential explanations for why a child struggles with reading that parents often lose sight of the obvious. Many parents mistakenly assume that the vision screenings are the same as a complete eye examination, and incorrectly assume that their child’s vision is fine when they pass the screening. According to the American Optometric Association, approximately one out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems; and three out of five children with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems. “Whether your child is a bright underachiever, struggles with reading or has developmental delays, the good news is the majority of vision problems that

WSIE STORY
Popular Station Is Now In Transition And Could Use Your Help
BEFORE
AFTER
BEFORE
For more than 30 years, WSIE has been known as The Jazz Station, delivering jazz music programming to the St. Louis metropolitan area. WSIE, the 50-kilowatt radio station licensed to the SIU Board of Trustees, went on the air in September 1970 from the campus of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The station began its existence as an NPR affiliated station, providing much of that awardwinning program to the region.

ate in that capacity today, but its operation is threatened by the budget crisis in Illinois. WSIE has been declared a tier three by the University. That designation means the station, like other Tier Three operations on campus, must become self-sustaining or face elimination. Steve Jankowski, a graduate of the SIUE Mass Communications Department whose career began at WSIE, is now serving as the interim general manager. He has been charged with developing the plan to see the station through these difficult times. The station is now undergoing a transition to a broader format which will hopefully attract greater numbers of listeners and therefore increase the likelihood of greater support from the community.
The station also served as a training ground for student broadcasters working their way through the Mass Communication curriculum. Helping to launch the careers of individuals like Dewayne Staats, the broadcast voice of the Tampa Bay Rays; and Bob Mueller, a multi-Emmy award winning news anchor in Nashville, TN; and Pete Delkus, the Chief Meteorologist with a Dallas TV station, the station built a reputation for excellence in programming. The station operated under the auspices of the College of Arts and Sciences until 2008 when control of the operation was moved to University Marketing and Communications. It continues to oper-
The station provides local businesses the opportunity to purchase underwriting units which promote the business involved, while supporting the radio station. Individuals may also make donations to the WSIE Development Fund by visiting www.wsie.com and clicking on Support. For more information, contact Steve Jankowski at (618) 650-3607.

T
he fourth annual SIPS & Tastes @ 618 is a weekend-long celebration of great food, drinks and entertainment. The festival features some of the best-known food and beverage venues in St. Clair County and the surrounding areas. This year's event will be on Friday, August 12 and Saturday, August 13 at the Community Park in Shiloh, #1 Park Drive. Starting time on Friday is 4 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday. Activities will continue until 10:30 p.m. each night.
While the food vendors are still being selected to participate for this year’s event, the past has found a variety of food from which to select: Mexican, German, Italian, Chinese and Irish. Of course, the American favorites are also featured such as Barbecue, Ice Cream, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Brats, Wings, Popcorn, Snow Cones and Hot Nuts. Vendors from previous years have included Roemer Topf of Mascoutah, Dairy Queen of Lebanon, Wings of Shiloh, D. S. Vespers at the Edge of Belleville, Marx Brothers of Highland, Hidden Lake Winery of Aviston, Villa Marie Winery of Maryville, Schatzes of Belleville and Crehan's Irish Pub and Banquet Center of Belleville. The Bud Light-Grey Eagle Stage will have a great mix of live entertainment with genres like blues, classic rock, modern country and country/western. Music will be provided by some of the most popular groups from the area including Razed on Radio, Next Best Thing band and others.
Appealing to all ages, the festival is a familyfriendly event. In fact, the park features a fantastic play area for children adjacent to the festival area and concessions will be age appropriate as well. Admission and parking is FREE. When it comes to the Sips, there will be beers from Grey Eagle Distributing, “Chick” Fritz Distributing and craft beers from 4204 Main Street Brewery. Wine lovers will find a variety of vintages, including Moscato, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Merlot and Cabernets available from Breakthru Beverages in Belleville. Soft drinks will be Pepsi products along with tea, lemonade and bottled water. Sorry, NO COOLERS ALLOWED! A must-see is the “Bud Light Build-A-Bar.” This is a portable bar the size of a tractor trailer and is equipped with numerous televisions, a stereo and two levels including an observation deck.
Unlike most festivals, this one will be accepting credit cards, as well as cash, for purchase of your tokens. All beverage stands will accept ONLY tokens for purchases. New for this year, the food vendors will be accepting tokens and cash. This event is sponsored by the St. Clair County Licensed Beverage Association in association with the Illinois Licensed Beverage Association: The oldest Hospitality Trade Association in the nation. Last year’s chairperson was Kim Schewe of Southgate and T.R’s Saloon, and this year's chair is Marilyn Neumeyer of Just One More bar in Fairview Heights.
