Timeless music performed by legendary artists

n just a couple of years, 88.7 WSIE The Sound - on the campus of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville - has evolved to include traditional jazz as always, but now smooth jazz, blues and R&B treating listeners to an exciting array of music by local, national and international recording artists. Listeners may hear anything from Frank Sinatra and Miles Davis to Steely Dan, Sting, Eric Clapton and hundreds of other favorites. “It’s all about the mood as we have been really focusing on the music at WSIE,” said Jason Church, general manager of the station for the past year. “People say, ‘Oh I don’t really like jazz,’ and I say ‘that’s OK give us a try again, you might just like it!’ We are also playing many St. Louis area musicians like Erin Bode, Brian Owens, the Funky Butt Brass Band, The Bosman Twins and many others.” With 20 years of radio background in the St. Louis area, Church said, “I think the jazz scene is enjoying a resurgence here in St. Louis. Always a jazz and blues town, there are many young musicians presenting new music and ‘turning over’ the standards giving them a fresh take.” The station has specialty programming throughout the week including The Segue on Sunday morning, the Financial Cafe with Larry Lexow and John Grainey on Saturday mornings and Voices on Sunday evening. WSIE's on-air hosts include Kayci from 6 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday; Z-man on Fridays at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Michael Monday-Friday 3 to 7 p.m.; Christiann at 7 p.m. to midnight Monday, Wednesday and Friday; Ja’Quis on air from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; Jamo 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; Lady Po3tic 7 to midnight Saturday and Sunday; and Dennis Wayne from 7 p.m. to midnight Tuesday and Thursday. Each has their own style of programming playing all manner of music and highlighting special events, and musicians. For example, recently Christiann conducted an interview with Terence Blanchard, jazz trumpeter, six-time Grammy Award winner and composer. Among Blanchard’s many works is the World Premiere

of “Fire Shut Up In My Bones” at Opera Theatre of St. Louis (opening night was June 15). Serving Southwestern Illinois and the Greater St. Louis area, WSIE 88.7 The Sound also delivers SIUE sports and Edwardsville High School football. WSIE is a community supported, noncommercial radio station which strives to give SIUE students opportunities to work alongside industry professionals. Within a framework of creativity and freedom of artistic expression, staff members of WSIE, 88.7 The Sound encourages high academic standards and development of broadcasting skills and professional responsibilities. The station is underwritten by local businesses and events, and interested parties can contact Account Representative Stephanie Lewis who enjoys meeting with potential sponsors to design a successful promotional campaign. “I like to say to our underwriters that 88.7 appeals to people with a certain lifestyle,” she said. “Our listeners are people who enjoy the finer cultural things in life.” The next step, among many, is to create a new web site that goes from a basic format to more of a “destination” site including local and national concert calendars, biographies of musicians, student podcasts and a fun blog where listeners can interact with the DJs. Working together with St. Louis institutions such as The Sheldon, Jazz St. Louis, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Powell Hall and The Muny, 88.7 is looking foward to their fifth Hermann Wine and Jazz Festival on September 7 with headliners The Bosman Twins plus Mo E All-Stars featuring Cheri Evans, Carolbeth True, Jim Manley and Bach to the Future. Visit hermannjazz.com for more information. They will also be broadcasting at Taste of St. Louis Sept. 13-15.

Know The Signs Of A Foundation Problem: Cracks And Gaps

S

pring and summer is the time of the year to really take a look around the perimeter of the home and notice any cracks that may appear in the brickwork outside, which, over time and not addressed, will cause tears on the walls inside, too. A sign of a foundation problem inside the home is when the drywall shows irregular cracks usually diagonally off the corners of windows and doors thus causing them to not work easily because the structure has shifted. In extreme cases, gaps may occur above interior doors.

around the house liquefies and may go deep enough causing the foundation wall to drop. Seasonally, the clay in the soil may also push inward when too much water lingers around the perimeter of the home. A block foundation will bow inward mainly in the middle and a poured foundation wall will tip in from the top. Typically, if there is an issue, block foundations will have a crack running left to right across the center of the wall while poured foundations will have at least two diagonal cracks that break and are off set from side to side as the center of the wall tips inward.

To help prevent these foundation problems, homeowners should manage the drainage around the home. And, continue to take note year after year as drainage can shift over time. Say a neighbor changes the drainage around their home and guess what? That water starts flowing next door.

In extreme weather conditions like the Metro East has seen so far this year, even the best drainage around a home may have too much water, too fast, for too many weeks. Rainfall like this is not caught by the roof and gutters, and does not have enough time to drain away.

Home improvement projects will redirect water and cause it to flow differently as well. Things like the addition of a swimming pool; a patio with a fire pit; a room addition; or new landscaping beds can wreak havoc for drainage if not properly attended to in the first place. Also, take note of the gutters and downspouts: If they become clogged where does that overflowing water go?

Happy 60th Birthday To Beloman!

B

ELOMAN is a second-generation family-owned Heating and Cooling business providing quality sales and service to Belleville and its surrounding communities for 60 years.

Founded in 1959 by brothers Paul and Leo Lugge with only four employees, it is owned and operated currently by Paul’s son, Jim Lugge. Today BELOMAN has grown to over 50 employees with a combined 1,249 years of experience helping residential, commercial and industrial clients with all of their heating, cooling, plumbing, indoor air quality and architectural metal needs. “We appreciate the support of the community that has helped us to succeed as a locally owned company for all these years,” Lugge said. “It is particularly amazing because ‘less than one-third of family businesses survive the transition from the first to the second generation,’ according to Forbes.” During the company’s long reign, they have been fortunate to achieve many local and national awards for their client-driven focus. Most recently, BELOMAN has earned the Koch Air 2016 and 2018 Carrier Dealer of the Year Award, plus the 2019 National Factory Authorized Dealer Presidential Award.

BELOMAN offers a complete line of Carrier products, which includes High-Efficiency Furnaces, Air Conditioners, Heat Pumps, Humidifiers, Electronic Air Cleaners, Heat Recovery Ventilation, Energy Recovery Ventilation and Programmable Thermostats. What’s Lurking In Your Crawl Space? Woods Has Solutions

T

he home is a system and every part of that system plays a role that affects the rest of the structure. If it's crawl space begins to rot, grow mold or experience structural problems, this will extend to every part of the home’s system.

Get a FREE Quote!

Symptoms of Crawl Space Problems: • Drywall Cracks in the Interior • Uneven Floors • Foul Odors in the Home • Heightened Allergies or Asthma Symptoms

Crawl Space Thermal Insulation

Typical crawl spaces are moldy, foul-smelling spaces that homeowners avoid at all costs. Many of them flood, and they're often filled with debris left over from when the house was constructed. In more extreme cases, they can be rotting structures with rodents, animals and other pests living within. Crawl space repair will help avoid other unnecessary repairs, create a healthier living space and save money on utility bills. Heavy-duty moisture barriers used in the encapsulation process transforms the crawl space into a dry, clean, energy-efficient part of the house giving the homeowner valuable storage space.

Crawl Space Structural Repairs

SmartJack® supports solve sagging floor problems in crawl spaces by stabilizing and leveling sagging beams. Because it's built directly underneath the home, the crawl space plays a key role in a home's structural integrity. Crawl spaces bear this weight through the foundation walls and crawl space support columns.

Maryville Gary Ceretto, R.Ph. • Diabetic Care Center • Bio-Hormone Replacement • Veterinary Compounding • Durable Medical Equipment (sales and rental) • Prescriptions & Flavored Medications • Oxygen • Compression Stockings • Ostomy Supplies

However, many crawl spaces are designed with a support system that is either inadequate, rotting or has soils underneath the support posts that cannot bear the home’s weight. In many cases, a failing crawl space structure can be resolved by installing crawl space supports. This is a fast job that can provide permanent, warrantied results. Typical installations can be completed in two days or less. Thanks to special features that other rigid foam panels lack, SilverGlo™ insulation provides excellent performance and value when used to insulate the crawl space and basement walls. A second option is using spray foam to air seal and insulate the rim joist. Crawl space insulation is important as a number of comfort and energy problems are caused by inadequate or incorrect crawl space insulation. Any crawl space can be wet and damp, so the insulation must hold up in those conditions. Woods Basement Systems recommends installing a vapor barrier along with proper insulation to prevent mold and moisture problems, and to keep the home comfortable year-round. Encapsulation is a Building Science method that will help control mold and make rooms more comfortable year-round. Learn more with this free book, “Crawl Space Science,” with every free estimate from Woods Basement Systems. Area’s Premier Spa Offers Health And Wellness For All Ages Celebrate Dad This June With A Little TLC

O

oh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness has rapidly become the premier spot for all spa services and aesthetic needs in the Metro East and St. Louis area. Dr. Kristen Jacobs, owner and medical director, and nationally known Aesthetic Medicine Specialist, along with husband Dr. Robert Wise DC, who specializes in weight loss and wellness, want to help patients of all ages feel better about her or himself. “I help patients, both men and women, look years younger in a natural way,” she said. “It is very important to me to give my patients a refreshed version of themselves, not change their appearance into someone they are not. The best compliment I can get is when a patient says, ‘everybody could tell something was different but just couldn’t figure out what!’” During the less hectic days of summer, the team at Ooh La La offers anything from a supervised nutrition and weight loss program to a complete transformation of the skin and body. And, Ooh La La has a wide variety of products and services for every age, skin type and budget. In addition, “if you’re looking for the perfect birthday, graduation or another special occasion gift, just pick up a gift certificate at Ooh La La.” Women, men and teenagers can benefit from the multitude of skin care services available such as Hydrafacials that refresh and hydrate, and Chemical Peels that exfoliate and renew the skin. Medical grade skin care products are offered at Ooh La La and are considered a treatment at home to prevent, treat, and protect the skin. "Schedule a consultation to discover which regimen is best for you," Dr. Jacobs said. “We celebrate fathers during June and look forward to helping them achieve their goals.” Ooh La La’s Medical Services include Botox, Dermal Fillers, Laser treatments, Secret RF, Ultherapy and Coolsculpting. One of Dr. Jacobs’ favorite treatments is a Liquid Face Lift: a combination of Botox and Dermal Fillers. Delivering these treatments is actually an art form. There’s a difference between simply learning the basics of injections and an artist’s approach

to injecting. Dr. Jacobs’ natural artistic ability allows her to adapt each individual treatment to each patient’s individual needs. “No two faces are the same, therefore, no two patients’ treatments should be done the same," she said. Ooh La La’s Laser services include Laser Hair Removal, Laser Skin Rejuvenation that stimulates collagen, decreases pore size, improves fine lines and wrinkles as well as helps acne and rosacea but her favorite Laser treatment is the Pearl Skin Resurfacing. She states that the Pearl is “the one laser to choose to reveal healthy skin the fastest”. Ooh La La also offers IPL Photofacial for brown spots and redness. Dr. Jacobs, Dr. Wise and Ooh La La’s staff undergo extensive training and continuing education to stay up-to-date in this ever-changing world of aesthetics. Dr. Jacobs is involved with all her patient’s treatment planning and prides herself on offering affordable treatment plans based on your goals, lifestyle, and budget. Ooh La La’s Fountain Club is an excellent way to invest in yourself with easy monthly payments, exclusive and discounted pricing, with FREE rewards along the way! “Ultimately, we strive to develop relationships with our patients to become a partner not only in their appearance, but their health and wellness as well; we treat them like our family,” she said. “I am fortunate every day to see the difference that my treatments make in my patients’ lives - helping them feel better about themselves is extremely rewarding!” To schedule a consultation, call Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness Center at (618) 288-9117 today! The spa is located at 110 Cottonwood Road in Glen Carbon. www.kristenjacobs.com

The Top 5 Reasons Your Child Needs An Eye Exam impede learning can be corrected – once they are detected,” shared Dr. Thomas Unger, an optometrist with an office in Troy.

Please take a moment to review the signs that indicate vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties: • headaches when reading • slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • avoidance of reading • poor reading comprehension • frequent loss of place while reading • complains words move on the page • short attention span • smart in everything but school • labeled ADD, ADHD, dyslexic • working below potential

S

ummer is finally here. As your family calendar becomes full of summer events and you start to schedule those Back to School appointments for your child’s upcoming school year, are you sure you haven’t forgotten something important? What about your child’s eyes? Vision problems can affect more than just seeing the board or reading a book.

Any one of the above symptoms is a sign that you need to schedule a vision exam with a developmental optometrist. Please take the time to learn more about the vital role vision plays in your child’s academic performance, it could make all the difference. For more information or to schedule an appointment, Dr. Unger can be reached at: (618) 667-2020.

Research has shown that vision problems can: 1. interfere with academic performance 2. slow down overall development 3. cause a short attention span 4. make reading difficult 5. result in lowered self-esteem It’s usually pretty easy to tell when your child has difficulty seeing things in the distance (such as the board in school), but most parents don’t know what to look for to determine when a child has difficulty seeing the words in a book. There are so many potential explanations for why a child struggles with reading that parents often lose sight of the obvious. Many parents mistakenly assume that the vision screenings are the same as a complete eye examination, and incorrectly assume that their child’s vision is fine when they pass the screening. According to the American Optometric Association, approximately one out of four children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems; and three out of five children with learning disabilities have undiagnosed vision problems. “Whether your child is a bright underachiever, struggles with reading or has developmental delays, the good news is the majority of vision problems that

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%

correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

Americans Over The Age Of 40 intraocular lens. Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective surgeries with a success rate of 95 percent.

So, when is cataract surgery necessary?

Cataract surgery is necessary when the following are impacted: • Job Performance • Driving Ability • Reading and Watching Television • Level of Independence When vision has decreased to the point where it’s no longer to easily and safely perform daily activities, then it is time to consider cataract surgery.

C

ataracts can affect anyone! Although most people do not show symptoms of cataracts until at least the age of 40, cataracts can also affect young adults or even children. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the United States and the leading cause of blindness in the world. There are 24 million Americans over the age of 40 who are affected by cataracts. So knowing the symptoms and monitoring their effects on day-to-day life are important – see the ad below. Cataracts generally progress very slowly and surgery may not be needed for many years. In some cases, periodically changing eyeglasses or a contact lens prescription may continue to provide good vision. There is no way to prevent cataract development. Currently the only way to treat cataracts is to surgically remove the natural lens of the eye and replace it with an

“The most important thing to remember is whether you are experiencing any visual symptoms or have no symptoms at all, an eye evaluation is the only way to determine whether you have a start of an eye disease that may result in permanent vision loss if not detected and treated timely,” said Dr. Tom Unger. Your Eye Doctor can assist in making that decision. Doctor’s Tom and Alice Unger, Optome-trists in Troy, can professionally advise their patients after performing a comprehensive eye examination. If, at that time, cataract surgery is determined to be necessary, they can consult and refer to an ophthalmologist for surgery. Then the patient will return to them for follow up eye care after surgery. Don't delay! Schedule an eye exam today before the year’s end. If cataracts are interfer-ing with your independence and daily activities, it may be time to have cataracts re-moved and use any insurance benefits you may have. “The Car Guy” Explains The Importance Of An Appraisal

S

teven Paul, “The Car Guy” and the owner of Test Drive Technologies Mobile Vehicle Inspection and Appraisal Services, cannot stress enough how important it is to have a valuable vehicle appraised in case of some unforeseen accident, act of God or fire. “You must have that document on file with your insurance company so you are protected because you just never know what the future may bring,” he said. “And without that document you will not receive fair market value." Having a vehicle appraised is very similar to that of having real estate appraised in which there are several steps that must be taken, items which must be explained and of course proper methodology followed during the appraisal calculations. The USPAP or Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice outlines these standards very well for every appraiser to follow. Unfortunately there is no federal or even state requirement in many areas that require an auto or vehicle appraiser to retain a license or even a certification unlike real estate appraisers and insurance adjusters.

Paul, a Veteran of the U.S. Army, is certified through the ASCAA, American Society of Automobile Appraisers and all of their reports follow the USPAP guidelines and methodology in order to be accepted and approved by insurance companies, financial institutions as well as the court of law.

Why Powers of Attorney are So Important! Life is full of the unexpected. A power of attorney is an important document that allows an individual to plan for the unexpected. If an individual suddenly becomes incapacitated and does not have a power of attorney, it may become necessary for a guardian to be appointed to make the individual’s medical decisions and/or to manage the individual’s financial matters. A guardianship is a court-involved proceeding, which can be expensive and time-consuming. In a guardianship, the ultimate decision as to who will act as guardian is made by a judge. The person chosen by the judge may not have been the person the individual would have wanted to be in charge. It is possible to avoid the need for a guardianship if an individual signs a power of attorney. Under a power of attorney, an individual (called the “Principal”) designates another individual (referred to as the “Agent”) to act on behalf of the Principal. There are two different types of Powers of Attorney: Health Care Powers of Attorney and Property Powers of Attorney (also referred to as Durable Powers of Attorney). In both cases, the Principal determines who the Agent should be. The Principal decides who will be in charge of important decisions and tasks in the event of the Principal’s incapacity. Under a health care power of attorney, the Principal identifies an Agent to make the Principal’s medical decisions when the Principal is not capable to making those decisions himself/herself. A property power of attorney allows the Agent to manage assets titled in the Principal’s name such as checking accounts, investment accounts, retirement accounts, real estate, vehicles, or virtually any other asset which may otherwise be owned or controlled by the Principal. Deciding who should act as Agent can be a difficult decision but, in the long run, it can become very important for an Agent to have been named.

Bellecourt Gets A Makeover

B

With A Little Help From Their Friends

ellecourt Banquet Center opened in September of 1994 when Chef/Owner Tim Faltus saw the need for a venue dedicated only to hosting private events and helping turn guests' visions into reality. Bellecourt Banquet Center consists of two buildings conveniently located next door to each other in Downtown Belleville: Bellecourt Place and Bellecourt Manor. The original location, Bellecourt Place on North Jackson Street, consists of two spacious dining rooms seating between 25 and 150 guests. The smaller of the two rooms is ideal for both social and business functions as well as rehearsal dinners and showers. Wedding receptions of up to 64 guests can be accommodated there also. The larger room retains the charm of its predecessor, the First Baptist Church, with high ceilings and stained glass windows. Its beauty is unmatched for both wedding ceremonies and receptions. Bellecourt Manor offers not only a spacious dining room for up to 300, but an adjoining lobby, bar and library, which can be used in a variety of ways. Recently the Manor underwent a makeover to accommodate today’s bridal trends. With the help of Kay Kendall Interior Design and McCullough’s Flooring, they decided to go with a more neutral palette.

“Our old style was more of a statement and the bride would fit her style and colors to our interior design,” said General Manager Ellie Miller. “But we thought 'let’s make it more accommodating so the bride can decorate with any colors that she wants and it all blends perfectly. Elegant rustic is the big theme today and we might see driftwood and bark decor which fits nicely with this more neutral background, and really gives the bride the freedom they want to be creative.” While the first floor of Bellecourt Place has been updated, they are planning to do the same upstairs with the beautiful banquet room, bar, balcony, bride’s room and sitting room. It’s in this building that bride or event planner will meet Miller, go through the booking process and discuss the event. “I am the first and last person they will see when working together,” she said. “And currently we are offering a very nice discount for weddings on a Friday night rather than Saturday.” For more information, please visit www.bellecourtbc.com and call (618) 233-8490 to schedule an appointment.

Community Organizations And Volunteers Seek To Provide Meals For Those In Need

A

very special program in the Mascoutah School District brings together community volunteers to feed children during the school year who might otherwise go hungry.

“We started the Mascoutah Weekend Meals Program six years ago to provide enough groceries for six meals for the weekend once a month,” said founder and former Mascoutah teacher Rhonda Ross. “The meals are provided to all school ages pre-K through 12th grade and half of these go to the kids who live at SAFB. Actual numbers of students fluctuate, but it’s been averaging over 100 per month and has climbed to as high as 186.” The program is very discreet as no one wants a child to be worried or embarrassed thus one teacher or staff member from each school places the bagged food into the childrens’ backpacks or lockers on the third Friday of every month. A list of students who qualify is gathered by the administration and permission to participate is granted by the parent(s). Everything is completely confidential. “There are so many volunteers who we rely on to raise funds, maintain the pantry and package the meals on the third Thursday of each month,” Ross continued. “Organizations or individuals are encouraged to help out - they can adopt a particular month or what fits their schedules best. We have volunteers from neighborhoods in the school district, different organizations like the ladies here today from women4given and concerned citizens.” During long school breaks, the MWM provides a little more plus larger food items that can be used for multiple meals. Over the summer, there are 10 churches in the area who will continue the effort. “As we continue to serve, the numbers of students who need our help will change as will the cost for the food items,” she said. “Our sustainability relies on the community and its support, and we thank each and every person who has helped out from the bottom of our hearts!” For more information, please call (618) 604-7832.
