Freshly Made Sweets Every Day Of The Week E
mbarking on their third year of business in Edwardsville and Shiloh, and the second in Chesterfield, Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate is proud to be locally owned and more proud to say that their fresh chocolates are made locally, one piece at a time.
Supporters of small business across America, the three chocolatiers – as they are affectionately known – make their chocolates using Fair Trade Certified and all-natural ingredients. “We want to encourage shopping local not only for a higher quality product, but to help the foundation of the community, which is our local economy,” Tyler Tschannen said. “Because local businesses help grow the economic base of the community, the dollars you spend have a domino effect.” In many ways, that money will eventually find its way back to the customer by funneling into the schools, churches, local non-profit organizations, parks and recreation, and much more. In addition, small towns can survive downturns in the economy with a thriving local business center. Shopping local keeps your neighborhoods safe and beautiful, and stabilizes home values. “From a product perspective, we truly only want the best for our customers,” Tschannen said. “We try to keep current with health trends and concerns, thus many of our chocolates are gluten free. And of course we all know that recent studies have shown a little bit of dark chocolate per day provides natural antioxidants that are good for your heart.” “We are so grateful to our customers,” he continued. “Starting our business was a challenge, but very rewarding too, and lots of fun. We now have regular customers who come in once a week or so – it’s good to see their friendly faces. Who isn’t happy when they give or receive chocolate?” Other than the popular retail side of the business, Tschannen has built a solid foundation
for corporate business offering a variety of products for employers and employees. In addition, brides and grooms are choosing chocolates as specially crafted table-favors for their guests. A customized chocolate covered fruit and truffle tray is the perfect centerpiece to any shower, birthday or family celebration. Selections are designed in honor of the event with colors and flavors to suit everyone’s taste. Of course, the most popular chocolate holiday of the year is Valentine’s Day. Topping the list of customer favorites are chocolate covered strawberries, white and dark chocolate raspberry truffles, and milk chocolate or white chocolate red velvet cake truffles. “The fruit-inspired chocolates are becoming very popular, too,” he said. “We have chocolatecovered pineapple, blackberries and cherries, plus raspberries and strawberries.” “Every morning, we prepare our chocolate-covered fruits fresh,” Tschannen said. “In fact, we can create an order in as little as 30 minutes. Last minute custom orders on Valentine’s Day are challenging, so come visit us in advance for your custom order. Of course we will have a large selection of boxed and specialty chocolates for you to design your own special Valentine even for our last minute customers!” Visit the Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate nearest you: 6667 Edwardsville Crossing Drive in Edwardsville inside the Dierbergs, (618) 655-0511, facebook.com/cccedwardsville; or 3960 Green Mount Crossing in Shiloh next to Dierbergs, (618) 6245350, facebook.com/Chocolate3x; or their newest location in Chesterfield 1743 Clarkson Road, facebook.com/chocolate3co.

Stair Co. Can Rebuild Or Simply Update Staircases
A
gorgeous staircase in the foyer will most certainly be the centerpiece of a home. With today’s technology and the expertise of a master carpenter such as George Thomas of Stair Co., old balustrades can easily be updated not only for aesthetic purposes, but safety as well. Those two reasons are exactly why Thomas and the carpenters at Stair Co. take their job so seriously. Thomas has been designing and building stairs in the metro area for over 20 years. “I started my own company in 2003 and with the help of Gary Mifflin, master craftsman and artist, we have designed and built many unique stairs, some are more a work of art,” Thomas said. “But those really special staircases are the exceptions because most are standard designs put in place by the home builder. It surprises me how underappreciated stairs are even in upscale homes. Stairs like any other part of your home will need some maintenance. After a few years, a staircase not built by a professional will need some repair and the average carpenter is not trained to do so.” In fact, just updating the stairs to today’s building codes is a good place to start. “In many homes we can simply change the baluster spacing making it much safer for children,” Thomas said. A good choice and one of the most popular trends today, is to replace wood balustrades with iron. “Iron balustrades are much stronger than wood and dramatically changes, and enhances, the style of the home.”
Iron seems like a new thing when in fact it’s been used in architecture for centuries. From the earliest days of civilization wrought iron doors and furniture was commonplace in Roman times, and the structural use of iron gates and balustrades date to the middle ages. Today, decorators have found a new tool by using iron in their arsenal of ideas. One thing iron does for the décor of the home, is to provide relief from the visual heaviness of so much wood trim. The contrast of iron complements the wood trim and painted walls, and lends itself to so many different styles of architecture. With the introduction of new styles and finishes of iron balusters, replacing the wood with iron has been made much simpler than in the past translating into being more affordable for today’s homeowners. Stair Co. is a company that prides itself on craftsmanship, consistently setting the standard in design and solving the problems associated with the technical aspect of building staircases; It’s a passion that is shared among the craftsmen at Stair Co. If you’re ready to revitalize your home with the elegance of a custom staircase, call George Thomas today at (618) 920-6059.

ENERGY SAVING
HEAT . . .
from the
Men of Spengler
Save Money on Energy Costs and Make Your Home More Comfortable.
The majority of homes today still rely on natural gas or electricity generated by coal-fired power plants. But as energy costs have risen steadily over the last decade--with no end in sight-- making a home more energy efficient is a must.
Where Does Your Money Go?
According to Energy Star, the average American family spends approximately $2,200 per year on utilities. But where does all that money go? Heating costs account for the largest chunk of the pie, encompassing 29% of total utilities expenses. Air conditioning costs account for 17%, water heating eats up 14%, and appliances (such as the refrigerator, washer, and dryer) account for 13%. The remainder is spent on electric appliances, such as the TV, computer, and lighting.
Practical Energy Upgrades
Homeowners looking to save money should focus their efforts on the areas that use up the most utility dollars, mainly upgrades that affect heating and cooling costs. An added bonus is that sometimes these upgrades will also improve the value of your home.
Upgrade to a New Furnace
Energy efficient furnaces are a very attractive item for energy savings and for resale. Since heating makes up the biggest chunk of your energy expenditures, it makes sense that upgrading here will make the most impact on reducing utility costs. Energy Star rated furnaces are reportedly 16% more efficient on average in energy costs. If your furnace is more than 15 years old or is frequently in need of costly repairs, consider installing an Energy Star-qualified model. Conventional gas furnaces are usually located in a basement, utility room or a well-vented closet. They contain a combustion chamber where natural gas or propane is burned. The burner is ignited by a pilot light, a flame that burns 24 hours a day.
High Efficiency Furnaces
High-efficiency furnaces produce a lot more heat from the fuel they burn, saving homeowners substantially over the long haul. Most high-efficiency gas furnaces are induced-draft models — so named because they contain an energy-efficient electric fan. It draws air from outside the home into the combustion chamber and propels exhaust gases from the combustion chamber out of the house via the flue pipe. The efficiency of induced-draft furnaces results from the use of more efficient heat exchangers, but also from an electronic ignition, which eliminates the need for a constantly burning pilot light.
The most efficient gas furnaces on the market today are condensing models. These furnaces contain a second heat exchanger, which extracts additional heat from the flue gases, cooling them until the moisture they contain condenses. (Condensation of moisture releases additional heat.) Both condensing and non-condensing furnaces can be equipped with sealed combustion chambers. This feature prevents dangerous exhaust gases, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, from entering our homes. When shopping for a new furnace, look for Energy Star qualified models. Their efficiencies, which are listed as annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE), run from approximately 83 percent to 97 percent. As a rule, the induced-draft furnaces have efficiencies in the 80 percent range, and induced-draft condensing furnaces are in the 90 percent range. You can save $500 off a new Furnace this month at Spengler Plumbing, Heating and Cooling. For a free estimate call 618.589.2185

Heartland Women’s Healthcare
Provides Excellent Medical Care Right Here In The Metro East
P
roviders at Heartland Women’s Healthcare know their Southern Illinois patients are busy trying to balance family life with careers, and need top-notch health care right here where they live.
“Women in Southern Illinois do not need to travel to St. Louis for great health care,” said Dr. Emily Boyd, a physician in the newly opened Shiloh location. “From our own perspectives, we get it! All of us are working parents, too. Heartland has 28 providers and 21 locations with the most cutting-edge services and well-trained staff – great health care is available without traveling across the river.” “We offer free ultrasounds to all obstetric patients at every prenatal appointment so you can see your baby every time you visit,” she said. “In addition, our USBytes prenatal bracelets – given to each obstetric patient as a gift – contain a virtual world of prenatal care information specific to your pregnancy. Thus, no matter where you might be traveling, your information is available at all times.” Dr. Boyd is a perfect example of the providers and staff at Heartland. She is a Southern Illinois native originally from McLeansboro, Illinois and a graduate of McLeansboro Township High School. Her undergraduate degree was completed at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. She attended University of Illinois School of Medicine and her residency training was completed at Barnes Jewish Hospital Washington University in St. Louis.
Heartland Women’s Healthcare evolved from one practice in Marion that expanded exponentially in the last few years to include Mt. Vernon and Centralia – all of which are close to area major hospitals – and then many more satellites opened up totaling 21! “It really was based along the 57 corridor in Southern Illinois,” Dr. Boyd said, “but we quickly saw that the need was great not only in Southern Illinois but here in the Metro East as well.” The newly opened Shiloh location where Dr. Boyd now spends most of her time – her family lives in the area and attends local schools – is right where “we envision the most growth.” Situated right behind the Target in the Green Mount Crossing shopping area, the office can accommodate patients from the O’Fallon, Fairview, Belleville and other nearby towns. Heartland Women’s Healthcare provides basically all health care for women as far as gynecology and obstetrics. “Heartland is striving to change our image along with our changing culture; Our focus is you, the patient,” Dr. Boyd said. Please call (877) 456-2496 and visit wwwilobgyn.com to schedule your appointment at the nearest location. Also “like” Heartland at Facebook.com/hearthlandwomenshealthcare.

COMPLETED!
Expansion at Millstadt Pharmacy
Includes A Drive Through And Expanded Shopping Sections
M
illstadt Pharmacy spent the last few months undergoing a big renovation project that has transformed the building both inside and out. For 35 years the pharmacy has served Millstadt, and now it resembles a new, modern pharmacy. Along with the upgraded look, the pharmacy has expanded many of its sections and added the ultimate in modern times: a new drive through window to the pharmacy to enhance customer service.
keep the pharmacy open during construction. We have been able to do that with our other remodeling projects and we were happy to have kept the pharmacy up and running the entire time,” Evers added. Millstadt Pharmacy is located at 120 West Washington St. in Millstadt; (618) 476-1701; www.millstadtpharmacy.com.
Inside, many things have changed and moved around with the goal of maximizing the use of the store’s interior space. “All of this was done so we can better serve our pharmacy patients,” owner Todd Evers said. Evers is a well-known name for hometown pharmacies. Millstadt Pharmacy was originally opened by the Davinroy family, but since 2008, Evers has owned the store. He has also owned Dauber Pharmacy in Mascoutah since 2001, a location that’s served that city since 1853. Evers has owned many other pharmacies as well, and he applied that wealth of knowledge to the remodeling project in Millstadt. The renovations have expanded numerous popular sections of the store including fashionable accessories like scarves and wraps, shoes, purses and jewelry. The project, which finished at Thanksgiving, also offers an expanded gift section, an expanded card section, an expanded over-the-counter drug section and, most importantly, an expanded pharmacy. All of that was accomplished without adding square footage to the building. The drive through will likely be one of the new customer favorites, though regulars will find the pharmacy’s remodeling and expansions a great benefit to their shopping and pharmacy experiences. “We have been happy to work with the City of Millstadt to acquire and tear down an eyesore and build something that will better service the people of Millstadt,” Evers said. While remodeling was under way, the pharmacy remained open so all customers could continue to use Millstadt Pharmacy as usual. “We worked closely with our General Contractor, Miller and Maack, and their union and local sub-contractors to Marketplace Magazine | Winter Issue 2015 | marketplacemagazineonline.com | 23

“Save The Date” Scratch Off Cards Add An Element Of Suspense To Wedding Plans
A
s “wedding planning” season gets underway, happy couples are making arrangments and want to have fun announcing to their guests when and where the big event will be taking place. An exciting and affordable way to let friends and family know the date is with the growing trend of “Save The Date” scratch off cards. Made more popular by Martha Stewart’s do-it-yourself version, Karen Sroka, owner of My Scratch Offs, LLC, said, however, that the DIY failure rate is very high and couples then start looking for alternatives; Enter My Scratch Offs, LLC! “We showcase a wide variety of wedding save the date cards and have done over 50,000 total to date,” she said. “My Scratch Offs, LLC is the only company in the country that offers the 1-1/2-inch heart label that resembles Martha Stewart’s. Scratch off cards that reveal the destination is becoming more prevalent, too, as more couples are opting for out of town weddings.” Much of Sroka’s business is done online at www. MyScratchOffs.com and on that site customers will find designs to choose from or they can custom design their own for just $19.99 with the help of a graphic artist. “It’s so enjoyable to work with these young brides and grooms because they are so excited and not stressed out yet,” Sroka said and laughed. “We generally complete the orders via email, but of course customers can visit our store location as well: whatever is most convenient. Free samples are always available so they can see just what they are ordering. Save the date cards can also be on magnets so guests can just place it right on the fridge.”
From start to completion, couples should plan on approximately 21 calendar days, but can be even faster if they are in the area. In addition, My Scratch Offs will even do the whole mailing if desired. Sizes for save the date cards are from 4-inches-by-6-inches up to 5-inches-by-7-inches; Magnets are from 3-inches-by-4-inches to 4-inches-by-6-inches. Plain white square-flap envelopes are available for an additional fee. Traditional wedding etiquette guides suggest sending save the date cards at least six months before the actual date. Some other unique ways to use scratch offs are as save the date cards for special occasions such as showers, surprise birthday parties, retirements, etc. “Baby Gender-Reveal Cards are really cute and add that element of surprise when it’s received in the mail,” Sroka said. They are also great for business promotions, such as getting a scratch off at check-out time and then discovering if you get 10%, 20% or 30% off, and for fund raisers rather than the usual raffle ticket for prizes or 50/50's. Customers are invited to use the web site at www. MyScratchOffs.com and to stop by the newly appointed office where you can meet the staff and see over 4.8 million scratch offs in stock! They are happy to give a tour and demonstrate how the machine – affectionately known as Stan The Labeler – works. There are even ways for the do-it-yourselfer to create their own exciting scratch offs. “We can do as much or as little as the customer needs,” Sroka said. Please visit the web site at www.MyScratchOffs.com to view products and request FREE samples! The office is located at 3814 N. Belt W in Belleville; (618) 416-1623.

Missouri Botanical Garden’s 2015 Orchid Show Celebrates Orchids and Their Pollinators
J
ourney into a world filled with beautiful orchid flowers and their amazing pollinators this winter during the Missouri Botanical Garden’s annual Orchid Show. Stroll through a lush display to discover hundreds of rarely seen orchids from the Garden’s collection, a Victorian gazebo, pollinators of all shapes and sizes, and hundreds of orchids. At every turn, orchids burst from the landscape with bright, bold colors. Approximately 500 orchids are on display at any one time, including Cattleya, Laelia, Encyclia, Oncidium and Paphiopedilum along with many other varieties. Spanning a wide range of sizes, colors and scents, these orchids are displayed as they would be found in their natural habitats, with terrestrial orchids at ground level and epiphytic orchids suspended atop tree branches. Hundreds of other tropical plants and ferns help set the verdant scene. Orchids have specific relationships with their particular pollinators and conservators fear the loss of the pollinator will likely result in the loss of the orchid in the wild. As a result, many orchid conservation projects also focus on the conservation of their pollinators. Early study of orchid flowers revealed their complexity in form and specialized mechanisms for attracting insect pollinators. Charles Darwin was one of the first scientists to observe the pollination of orchid flowers by insects and speculated that many flowers resemble insect pollinators. He suggested that pollinators are attracted to the flowers because of this similarity. Since pollinators can be very scarce, orchids must have some
way to attract animals inside their flowers and the flowers must remain open long enough for a pollinator to find it. Therefore, conservation of orchid species must also include steps to protect their specific pollinators. Throughout the year, Missouri Botanical Garden horticulturists care for the collection behind the scenes in the private greenhouse range. Temperatures inside greenhouses are manipulated to force the winter bloom of as many plants as possible for the annual Orchid Show. Orchids are grouped by watering needs and different fertilizers are used depending on the season. Spent blooms are replaced with new ones on a daily basis, shifting the look and landscape of the show throughout its run. Photographers are welcome to use hand-held cameras to capture the Orchid Show for personal enjoyment though tripod and monopod usage is not permitted indoors. Orchid Show admission is $5 per person (ages 3 and older), in addition to general Garden admission ($8 for adults; $4 for St. Louis City and County residents, with free admission Wednesdays and Saturdays until noon; free for children ages 12 and younger). Missouri Botanical Garden members enjoy free general admission along with free Orchid Show admission. The Garden is located at 4344 Shaw Blvd. in South St. Louis. Free parking is available on site. For general information, visit www. mobot.org or call (314) 577‑5100 (toll-free, 1‑800‑642‑8842). Follow the Garden on Facebook at www.facebook.com/missouribotanicalgarden.
