Fourth Generation of Local Jan’s Continues The Tradition

A

s Valentine’s Day quickly approaches, the youngest members of the Jan’s Hallmark family, Riley and Barrett, prepare Chocolate Covered Strawberries for the rush. Here’s an interview with their Dad, Eric Tschannen, who shares why being a part of the Jan’s Hallmark Family is better today than ever before. “Having a chance to work with my wife, Amy, and our kids on this project was a lot of fun, and I have to thank them for all of their help and cooperation,” said Tschannen. “2018 was a special year when I reflect back, because I had the chance to work at our Edwardsville store with my mother and my daughter on a dozen or more occasions. I can’t remember when we’ve had three generations of Tschannen’s working in the same store other than when making our famous Chocolate Covered Strawberries!” MM: We have heard there’s a secret to why your strawberries are so well known in the area? Can you share? ET: Well of course I have to keep the family secrets, but I’ll share as much as I can. To ensure the freshest product, we buy our berries locally from the Farmer’s Market. You can’t get that freshness from the mail. We carefully inspect each berry by hand and remove the stem in the picking process. Our dippers check the berries a second time before we hand roll them not once, but twice, in perfectly tempered smooth creamy milk chocolate. Then, we review each berry one more time before boxing it up and sending daily to your local store on February 12-14. However, it’s no secret that our customers do love the heavy coat of chocolate completely covering the berry: it sets us apart from the berries you’ll find most places.

ing their communities when they shop local. There’s a lot of perks to being a Rewards Member. Like right now through Feb. 14 new and current Rewards Members receive a 40% off coupon to use in March. All year long they also get a coupon for a free greeting card after 10 are purchased. That’s in addition to the rewards dollars and other savings customers receive each day. And starting on Feb, 22, members are ready for our highly anticipated FREE CARD FRIDAYS! Just show up and pick a free card, you don’t need to buy anything. But only Rewards Members will be eligible for these offers.

a dozen roses, or a box of our berries to sweeten the day, our team will help find the card and gift you need to make everyone in your life feel special this Valentine’s Day. Visit Jan’s Hallmarks in Columbia Center; Belleville Crossing; Green Mount Crossing; Granite City; Alton Square Mall; and Edwardsville Marketplace.

MM: So what does a membership cost for me to receive all of these freebies and extra discounts all year long? ET: I think that’s what a lot of people don’t know: it’s also free! A Rewards Membership will never cost you a dime and if you sign up it will certainly start saving you money. MM: What gifts should shoppers be looking for this Valentine’s Day? ET: Your significant other is looking for something sentimental - from the heart. Often we don’t tell our loved ones how much they mean to us and this holiday is a great opportunity to do that. Jan’s Hallmark has the gifts that will help express how you feel. Whether you want a Ronaldo bracelet that symbolizes your love, a Willow Tree figure that celebrates the love in your family,

MM: You mentioned your daughter, Riley, worked with you this year, how old is she? ET: She’s only nine, but she has matured so much this year. Customers really open up to her and she offers thoughtful solutions for them. When I hear those interactions it makes me a proud Dad. One of her favorite things this season was telling our Crown Rewards Members about all of the free gifts we were giving away. This last Christmas our Rewards Members received almost 20,000 FREE gifts with purchase. That’s almost a half million dollars in free extras our Rewards Members took home. These giveaways are not typically national programs, it’s our way of thanking and rewarding our Jan’s Hallmark Rewards Members for supportMarketplace Magazine | Winter Issue 2019 | marketplacemagazineonline.com | 7

Say Goodbye To Stubborn Fat At Ooh La La It’s called stubborn fat for a reason: no matter how healthy you eat and how much exercise you do, it’s virtually impossible to lose those annoying extra pounds. In the past you were left with two options: live with it or have surgery. However, now there is a cosmetic body contouring procedure called CoolSculpting that targets fat cells alone, eliminating them in an easy, non-intrusive fashion that exercise and diet can’t achieve as quickly or as effectively. What makes this body-shaping method remarkable is how non-invasive it is compared to other cosmetic fat reduction procedures such as liposuction. There are no injections and there is minimal recovery time. Coolsculpting is approved for under the chin, bra fat, back fat, side (flank), upper arms, abdomen, underneath the buttocks (banana roll), and, inner and outer thighs. How Coolsculpting works: CoolSculpting is an FDA-cleared, patented procedure that uses a targeted cooling process that kills the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. Only fat cells are frozen. Your healthy skin cells remain. No knives. No suction hoses. No needles. No scars. Once crystalized, the fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from your body through the liver. In a few months: say “hello” to a new you! Unlike a lot of other procedures, CoolSculpting takes very little time and is pretty simple to fit into your daily life. After your CoolSculpting treatment you can typically get right back to your busy day. Each treatment lasts one hour so you can easily fit your appointment into a lunch break. Minimal downtime and lasting results: After one visit, you’ll typically see a reduction of fat, but it takes a few months, and most often a second treatment, to fully realize the effects. This is mainly because it takes that long for your body to naturally dispose of the fat cells. And yes, you can lose even more with additional appointments. It is important to note that Coolsculpting is intended for cosmetic use, and is not covered by health insurance. Like other cosmetic procedures, it should never be substituted for a healthy diet and exercise. To learn more about CoolSculpting or to schedule a complimentary consultation, call Ooh La La Spa, Anti-Aging and Wellness Center with over seven years experience and nearly 2,000 treatments performed at (618) 288-9117 today!

February Is Heart Health Awareness Month

Heart Disease Can Happen To Anyone At Any Age

H

eart disease doesn’t happen just to older adults. It is happening to younger adults more and more often. This is partly because the conditions that lead to heart disease are happening at younger ages. February is Heart Health Awareness Month, the perfect time to learn about your risk for heart disease and the steps you need to take now to help your heart. Heart disease - and the conditions that lead to it - can happen at any age. High rates of obesity and high blood pressure among younger people (ages 3564) are putting them at risk for heart disease earlier in life. Half of all Americans have at least one of the top three risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking. Of course, genetics play a huge role in a person’s heart health.

Anyone Is At Risk

High blood pressure. Millions of Americans of all ages have high blood pressure, including millions of people in their 40s and 50s. About half of people with high blood pressure don’t have it under control. Having uncontrolled high blood pressure is one of the biggest risks for heart disease and other harmful conditions, such as stroke. High blood cholesterol. High cholesterol can increase the risk for heart disease. Having diabetes and obesity, smoking, eating unhealthy foods and not getting enough physical activity can all contribute to unhealthy cholesterol levels. Smoking. More than 37 million U.S. adults are current smokers, and thousands of young people start smoking each day. Smoking damages the blood vessels and can cause heart disease.

Other conditions and behaviors that affect your risk for heart disease include:

Obesity. Carrying extra weight puts stress on the heart. More than 1 in 3 Americans - and nearly 1 in 6 children ages 2 to 19 - is obese.

Diabetes. Diabetes causes sugar to build up in the blood. This can damage blood vessels and nerves that help control the heart muscle. Nearly 1 in 10 people in the United States has diabetes. Physical inactivity. Staying physically active helps keep the heart and blood vessels healthy. Only 1 in 5 adults meets the physical activity guidelines of getting 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity. Unhealthy eating patterns. Most Americans, including children, eat too much sodium (salt), which increases blood pressure. Replacing foods high in sodium with fresh fruits and vegetables can help lower blood pressure. But only 1 in 10 adults is getting enough fruits and vegetables each day. Diet high in trans-fat, saturated fat and added sugar increases the risk factor for heart disease.

4 Ways to Take Control of Your Heart Health

Don’t smoke. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. If you don’t smoke, don’t start. If you do smoke, learn how to quit.* Manage conditions. Work with your health-care team to manage conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. This includes taking any medicines you have been prescribed. Learn more about preventing and managing high blood pressure and high cholesterol.* Make heart-healthy eating changes. Eat food low in trans-fat, saturated fat, added sugar and sodium. Try to fill at least half your plate with vegetables and fruits, and aim for low sodium options. Learn more about how to reduce sodium.* Stay active. Get moving for at least 150 minutes per week. You can even break up the 30 minutes into 10-minute blocks. Learn more.* This article is courtesy of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. *Visit www.cdc.gov to learn more about reducing the risk of heart disease.

Hope For Struggling Students In The New Year According to Dr. Thomas Unger, a Developmental Optometrist in Troy, “When a child sees 20/20, that means they can see a certain size letter on an eye chart at a distance of 20 feet, but that’s all it means. There are over 20 visual skills required for reading and learning besides being able to see the eye chart. If your child has any of the above symptoms, you should schedule your child to see a Developmental Optometrist.”

Once vision problems are diagnosed and treated, reading and learning are no longer a struggle. Homework gets done quickly and without battles. Start the new year off right. Schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation today: bring hope to your family’s new year.

P

arents and caregivers take heart, homework battles and report card frustrations could be a thing of the past. Finding out if your child struggles from a vision related learning problem will bring you hope in the new year.

For more information on the critical link between vision and learning, Dr. Unger can be contacted at (618) 667-2020 or visit www.readingandvision.com.

Researchers estimate that 1 out of 4 children have an undiagnosed vision problem that is interfering with their ability to learn. Many of these children have been told their vision is 20/20 leaving parents struggling, trying to cope and searching for answers for their child’s problems. It is vital for parents and educators to know the signs that indicate vision may be playing a role in their child’s difficulties:

• Headaches when reading • Slow or incomplete copy work from board or paper • Avoidance of reading • Covers one eye when reading • Poor reading comprehension • Frequent loss of place while reading • Complains words move on the page • Short attention span • Smart in everything but school • Labeled ADD, ADHD, Dyslexic • Working below potential

From STRUGGLING...To SUCCESS! 1 out of 4 children struggle with reading and learning because of undiagnosed vision problems.

Does Your Child... • Dislike reading? • Skip or reread lines? • Prefer to be read to? • Lose place when reading?

• Have trouble remembering what has been read? • Have difficulty paying attention? ADD/ADHD?

• Make numbers/letter reversals? • Have reading /homework take longer than it should?

ELIMINATE DOUBT! If your child has any of the above symptoms, he or she may have a 100%

correctable vision-based learning problem. Children who once struggled go from failure to success when these vision problems are treated. Call us today to schedule a Developmental Vision Evaluation.

The Staff At Fence And Deck Depot Work Together As One ‘Family’

W

hen Sean Nesbit acquired Fence and Deck Depot this past fall, he had a perception that a “family business" meant everyone had the same last name. “But I quickly realized that while there’s just one ‘Nesbit’ at the company, we treat each other like family members. I now realize that 'family business' means a way of treating, supporting and interacting with one another,” he said. “We have 50 people here who genuinely care about each other – that is what family is all about." His mantra every day: treat others as you would want to be treated; do it right the first time; do the right thing; and do what you say you’re going to do. "Everyone is on board with this,” Nesbit said. “If we all live by this inside the company, then that attitude will be reflected when we work with our customers.” Fence and Deck Depot is nearly 20 years old and several employees have been with the company at least 10 years if not more. Nesbit said his goal is not to change the culture, but to enhance the things they already do so well. “I discuss with my team that we can do a little more here and there that builds on our successful foundation and reinforces our commitment to providing our customers with an excellent experience," he said. For example, increasing the use of technology will be very helpful to enhancing the customer experience and lends a hand to the staff.

“There are many facets of the business that has nothing to do with fences or decks that all comes back to customer service,” he said. “Everything we do is to improve the process for the customer from start to finish - that includes, first off, finding us, then making that first call and setting an appointment with a knowledgeable ‘consultant’ rather than a ‘sales person.’” The company does both residential and commercial, and offers all types of fences such as various wood, vinyl, ornamental steel and aluminum, and chain link styles. “We also install quality composite and vinyl decks,” Nesbit said, “and we’re manufacturer-trained to install the latest low-maintenance products. Along with offering wood decks, we can find the right fit for your personal needs.” Accredited by the Better Business Bureau, Fence and Deck Depot provides quality, professional installation on all of their products. Call (618) 663-4675 for an estimate and visit www.fencedepotco.com. In addition, Fence and Deck Depot has a location in O’Fallon, Ill. at 1202 Paragon Drive. The company is a member of the Home Builders and Remodelers Metro East Association and the American Fence Association, among other related organizations.

SPECIAL SECTION - SENIORS

You Can Likely Avoid Knee Replacement Surgery

With The Area’s Only Patented “Alternative To Knee Replacement” Program Are you tired of living with sore, painful knees, but don’t want to have knee replacement surgery?

How the Program Works

The good news is that recent treatment options show that the pain associated with OA (osteoarthritis) of the knee may no longer need to be considered an inevitable part of aging. Many people have already tried exercise, but found it to be painful without providing lasting relief. Some people with OA have also tried injections of cortisone, Hyalgan or Synvisc with little to no long-term relief. Associated Physicians Group’s (APG’s) Alternative-to-Knee-Replacement Program has worked wonders for thousands of Metro East patients most of whom had severe (bone-on-bone) OA pain. Even a majority of people who have tried cortisone, steroid or other types of injections and therapies unsuccessfully have finally found pain relief through this FDA approved, patented and evidencebased program.

Are You a Candidate?

• Are your knees stiff in the morning? • Do your knees hurt when going up or down stairs? • Do you frequently take Ibuprofen or Aspirin for your knee pain? • Do the activities you enjoy cause pain in your knees? • Have you been told that you will need knee replacement surgery? If you answered YES to any of the questions above, then you’re a candidate.

APG’s unique program consists of viscosupplementation injections performed under fluoroscopic guidance combined with a specialized form of pain-free physical therapy rehabilitation, and when needed, specialized “unloader” knee bracing that can provide immediate pain relief. The program is based on leading OA research, which documents that injections performed under fluoroscopy (a live-motion x-ray) are significantly more accurate, more effective and less painful. With the fluoroscope, the medical provider can see exactly where the injection is going, giving him/her proof that the medicine is in the knee joint— a vital component to the success of the program. The skilled attorneys at MMR take pride in providing superior legal services for clients whether large or small. These services include estate planning for death and disability through the use of wills, trusts, and powers of attorney. Other practice areas include banking, bankruptcy, business law, civil litigation, commercial litigation, employee benefits, employment law, real estate law, and taxation. Attorneys Greg Coffey and Beth Flowers, based in Edwardsville, focus their practice on estate planning, real estate and business transactions, and trusts and estates. They say when planning for a person’s death and disability, “An important point is that we do not tell people what to do, but we listen and give them feedback and suggest things they may not have even thought of. With meaningful information, they can make the best decisions for their situation.” This planning is not just for seniors. Unfortunately, tragic things happen regardless of age and people want to know that they and their loved ones will benefit and be cared for as they intend. “With just a few hours of your time, we can help avoid delays, complexities and unintended consequences that too often occur without proper planning. Proper preparation assists not only caretakers and survivors, it also gives peace of mind that a person’s wishes will be realized,” Flowers and Coffey said.

Edwardsville

Coffey and Flowers also help executors and trustees to smoothly administer estates and trusts during the difficult time after a family member’s death. This is facilitated by proper planning, but can also be accomplished regardless of the circumstances by knowledgeable attorneys like Flowers and Coffey.

To schedule an appointment, call the Edwardsville office at (618) 656-2244 and visit the web site www.mmrltd.com for more locations and information.

As with their estate planning and administration practices, Coffey and Flowers agreed, “Regardless of a person’s legal needs, the attorneys at MMR provide legal services from start to finish - with knowledgeable, practical and experienced advice all along the way.”

2019 Paws For A Moment Pet Contest Benefits The Humane Society A Message From Max The Westie

H

i everyone! Many of you may remember me, but for those of you who haven't met me, let me introduce myself: My name is Max - I am a Westie and I work at Gary Luttrell Photography. Gary is my best friend: I greet most of our clients and even "photo bomb" if I can get away with it. Guess what? I am so excited because it's time for the Paws For A Moment Pet Contest.

A few years ago, I had a great idea! A GREAT IDEA! Let us "Paws" for a moment, again, shall we?

Max (top), Lucky (bottom left) and Hope.

If you have a pet (dog or cat), do me a favor please. Ask them if they would like to have their portrait taken. I know they'll say "YES" - just watch how excited they get. I get to do it all the time and it's pretty cool being a celebrity. It's cold outside and kind of boring this time of year, so let's help my furry friends. Gary will photograph each pet and all the photographs will be on our web site and people get to vote for their favorite. There will be prizes and treats - Yay! - and for each photo session, Gary will make a donation to the Humane Society. The more pets that are photographed, the more money we will raise for our furry friends. Oh! I am so excited - I can't wait to see all my friends, old and new. This is going to be as much fun as a bowl full of bacon. Don't miss out - contest starts Feb. 18 so call right away: (618) 277-3686 (FOTO) or email Carol@garyluttrell.com.
