For all the nature lovers you can enjoy a behind the scenes tour that explores the Heart of Forest Park and its trees. Learn about the trees in an up close and personal way with an Urban Forester and Forest Park Forever horticulturist. It is a great opportunity to learn firsthand how these giants are cared for in an urban environment. There are approximately 18,000 trees in Forest Park. Take the time to get out and get some fresh air and a new perspective on Forest Park by taking a walk in the park. These tours are free to the public and, if leashed, you can bring along your pet. For complete information on these Heart of Forest Park Walking tours please contact Forest Park Forever at tours@forestparkforever.org or call (314) 367-7275. Forest Park is one of the gems of St. Louis and you can learn about its place in the fabric of St. Louis life by going on one of several different types of tours offered by Forest Park Forever. You can chose from self-guided tours, then and now tours, or create your own group bus tour. Forest Park is known as the “heart of St. Louis” and is truly one of the best urban parks in the country. It features a variety of attractions and is home to five of our region’s major institutions: the St. Louis Art Museum, the St. Louis Zoo, the St. Louis Science Center, the Missouri History Museum, and the Muny amphitheater. There are all kind of recreational facilities in the Park, including the Dwight Davis Tennis Center, the Steinberg Skating Rink, the Boathouse Restaurant (with boat rentals), the Forest Park Country Club, the Highlands Golf and Tennis Center, handball courts, and fields for softball, baseball, soccer, cricket, rugby, and archery. The park also features extensive walking and bicycling paths. There is something for everyone. Almost all St. Louisans know that Forest Park was the site of the 1904 World’s Fair, but here are a few more interesting facts about the park.

“St. louis’ best steaks” - rft readers poll 1999-2013

• Forest Park was dedicated at a large public ceremony on June 24, 1876 — the year the nation celebrated its centennial anniversary. Ulysses S. Grant was President. • The Park consists of 1,371.75 acres, and today is the seventh largest urban park in the United States, approximately 500 acres larger than New York City’s Central Park. It is a natural oasis in an urban environment. • Maximillian G. Kern, Forest Park superintendent and landscape gardener, designed the Park’s original plan. Kern also designed Lafayette Park and parks at the Compton Hill and Chain of Rocks Reservoirs. • At one time the River des Peres ran openly through the park but, due to sanitary concerns, a portion was put underground in a wooden box shortly before the 1904 World’s Fair. A 1923 bond issue funded the project that took the river underground permanently. By the 1930s, the portion of the River des Peres that runs through Forest Park was diverted entirely underground into huge concrete pipes. The river remains underground in the park. More recently, an artificial waterscape linking park lakes has been created. • More than 12 million visitors a year use Forest Park. Hundreds of thousands come to participate in softball, cricket, rugby, tennis, golf, archery, lacrosse and soccer. They also ride bikes, ice and roller skate, roller-blade, jog, fish and boat. An estimated half million people attend special events, such as the Great Forest Park Balloon Race, each year and an additional half million patronize The Muny. • Within the Park boundaries there is a primary forest, a secondary successional forest, and several fragile ecosystems. The park’s acreage includes meadows and trees, and a variety of ponds, manmade lakes, and freshwater streams. Forest Park Forever, a private, nonprofit organization, was founded in 1986 to work in partnership with the City of St. Louis and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry to remake and restore Forest Park to its rightful place as one of the country’s premier urban parks. Since the early 2000s, a $100 million restoration of park facilities through a public-private partnership aided by its Master Plan has restored Forest Park with work ongoing to improve both landscaping and habitat. Over several years numerous areas of prairie and wetlands in the park have been restored. These new habitats are serving not only to reduce flooding, but to attract an increased variety of birds and wildlife. They provide a much more varied experience for walkers and bikers in the park. One hundred and thirty years after its official opening, Forest Park has undergone a renaissance. Forest Park is a unique cultural institution that is vitally important to the entire region, regardless of age, race, or economic background. The goal now is to ensure that Forest Park remains an extraordinary resource for future generations.
