O’Connell’s Pub is a Bit of the Irish in St. Louis

If you’re looking for an authentic Irish pub then look no further than O’Connell’s Pub. A long time institution in St. Louis, O’Connell’s Pub is located just south of I-44, at the intersection of Shaw and Kingshighway. For those who need a more precise location you will find O’Connell’s Pub at 4652 Shaw Avenue. A classic bar with a good selection of Irish whiskey, single malt scotch, and beer O’Connell’s is perfect for sharing a drink and a conversation with friends. O’Connell’s is also famous for its burgers, roast beef sandwich and fish & chips. The burgers are the star as O’Connell’s has won first place numerous times for their burgers in the Riverfront Times restaurant poll over the years. The roast beef sandwich, however, is no slacker and is also a hometown favorite. Jack Parker opened O’Connell’s Pub in 1962 in Gaslight Square. For those below a certain age, Gaslight Square was the bohemian and entertainment area in St. Louis attracting prominent personalities and future stars. Many entertainers such as The Smothers Brothers, Lenny Bruce, Miles Davis, Barbra Streisand, Jackie Mason, Mike Nichols and Elaine May, Woody Allen, Jerry Stiller, Dick Gregory and Jack E. Leonard gained exposure at the start of their careers in the clubs of Gaslight Square. But Gaslight Square died and Jack Parker, the last Gaslighter, moved O’Connell’s from Boyle to Kingshighway and Shaw in 1972. To keep O’Connell’s feeling like home almost all of the original woodwork and fixtures, the beveled glass windows from the front, and the two 1904 World’s Fair chandeliers were taken and used at the new location. When you’re at O’Connell’s Pub you are visiting a lot of St. Louis history. So sit back and order your favorite brew and dig into that burger or roast beef sandwich; and, don’t forget the onion rings. O’Connell’s Pub, 4652 Shaw Avenue. 314-773-6600. Located at the intersection of Shaw and Kingshighway 1/2 block south of I-44. From Picasso to Fontana: Collecting Modern and Postwar Art in the Eisendrath Years, 1960-1968 Exhibition at Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum January 23 through April 13, 2015

During the 1950s and ’60s, international abstraction played a crucial role in Cold War cultural politics. In St. Louis, Washington University emerged as one of the nation’s most important regional centers for postwar abstract art in large part due to the efforts of William N. Eisendrath Jr. who served as curator and then director of the collection from 1960-68. Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum will pay homage with the exhibit “From Picasso to Fontana: Collecting Modern and Postwar Art in the Eisendrath Years, 1960-68.” The exhibition showcases more than 40 works acquired or donated during Eisendrath’s tenure. Included are works by some of the most significant European artists of the first half of the twentieth century including Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso, as well as seminal contemporary figures, such as Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, Pierre Soulages, and Antoni Tàpies. Among the works that entered the collection at this time is Pablo Picasso’s Women of Algiers, Variation “N” (1955), one of a series of fifteen paintings that Picasso made after Eugène Delacroix’s well-known painting The Women of Algiers in their Apartment (1834) in the Musée du Louvre in Paris. A gift of Etta Steinberg to commemorate the 1960 dedication of Washington University’s Steinberg Hall, it demonstrated the Museum’s commitment to collecting contemporary European trends. Part of a series of exhibitions looking at the development of the Kemper Art Museum’s collection in the 1940s, the 1950s, and now the 1960s, this exhibition presents the seminal artworks that entered the collection under Eisendrath’s leadership. Support for the exhibition is provided by the William T. Kemper Foundation, the Hortense Lewin Art Fund, the Yeatman Fund, and members of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. Located near the corner of Skinker and Forsyth Boulevards, the Kemper Art Museum is directly west of Forest Park on the Danforth Campus of Washington University in St. Louis. For complete information about this exhibit and other current exhibitions at the Kemper Art Museum please visit kemperartmuseum.wustl.edu Image credit: Pablo Picasso, Les femmes d’Alger (Women of Algiers), Variation “N”, 1955.
