Where Does Mike Like To Eat? Burger of the Month
RED OCTOBER!
8oz ground chuck patty on top of a cream cheese and sweet and spicy red pepper relish smothered pretzel bun, topped with a hot dog and grilled onions! Go Cardinals!!
Bear with me as we make our way to Mai Lee’s via Pappy’s Smokehouse. It will all come together—promise. As the old saying goes, ask where the locals eat to find the best food. To find some great St. Louis places to chow down, St. Louis City Edition decided to ask Mike Emerson, co-founder, chef, and owner of Pappy’s Smokehouse. Pappy’s is located at 3106 Olive Street in Midtown St. Louis. It has garnered both local and national recognition as the spot for top shelf BBQ in St. Louis. Do not doubt. Praise for Pappy’s can be found on TripAdvisor, Yelp, the Food Channel, and from any St. Louis native. Ian Froeb, St. Louis Post-Dispatch restaurant critic, placed Pappy’s Smokehouse at #23 in his STL 100 list of top St. Louis restaurants. Mike’s a busy guy. He is currently partnering with Skip Steele of Bogart’s, to open a new barbecue joint out in west St. Louis County. Dalie’s Smokehouse is now open for business at 2951 Dougherty Ferry Road in Valley Park. So, where does Mike go to relax and have a bite to eat? And that is the question that gets us from the Memphis Style BBQ of Pappy’s to the Vietnamese cuisine of Mai Lee.
Billie’s Fine Foods
Mai Lee, St. Louis’ first Vietnamese restaurant, is located at 8396 Musick Memorial Drive in Brentwood. It can be tricky to locate. Mai Lee is on the ground floor of a parking garage sandwiched between the Best Buy & Sports Authority colossus and the Brentwood Home Depot on Hanley Road just south of I-64. Whether for lunch or dinner Mai Lee always seems to be busy. From time to time you may just find Mike among the diners.

“I like to sit at the bar for a more laid back and comfortable experience. The service is always very prompt and attentive but never rushed. Trying to work my way through the entire menu but with over 200 dishes there are so many to choose from.” The menu is massive offering a huge variety of Vietnamese dishes. Need a little assistance in making a decision? Mike says that “#17 is his go to soup, the salt and pepper calamari may be the best squid in St. Louis, and the Seafood and charred rice special is a dish he always goes back to.” Mai Lee bills itself as a Vietnamese and Chinese restaurant. This is a nod to their beginnings when Mai Lee originally opened as a Chinese restaurant. A selection of Chinese dishes remains available but the emphasis and soul of Mai Lee is Vietnamese cuisine. Mai Lee is credited with introducing St. Louis to the food of Vietnam. Mail Lee’s hours are Tuesday thru Thursday 11am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday 11am to10pm, and Sunday 11am-9pm. For more information about Mail Lee please visit them at maileestl.com or follow it on Facebook. Mike has a couple of other places where he likes to eat and we are saving those recommendations for future issues of the St. Louis City Edition.

“St. louis’ best steaks” - rft readers poll 1999-2015
Three Fairs
The first weekend in October is a busy one with three fairs to choose from; or, make a plan and attend all three. The first two are among the best St. Louis has to offer with both garnering national media attention.
The 24th Annual Best of Missouri Market & More at the Missouri Botanical Gardens kicks off on Friday, October 2 and continues through Sunday, October 4. The Missouri Botanical Garden, located at 4344 Shaw Blvd., will present the Market under outdoor tents rain or shine.
This year, the Market continues to expand and will feature nearly 20 new food vendors and crafters hailing from several locations, including Portland, Mississippi, Florida, Michigan and other Midwestern states. The Best of Missouri Market & More will host more than 120 outstanding food producers and artisans, and entertainment for the entire family. For complete information please visit www.mobot.org and click on the Market event banner
Historic Shaw Art Fair, since 1993, once again takes place Saturday, October 3
and Sunday, October 4. The Art Fair is located in the Shaw Neighborhood along the tree-lined parkway of be autiful Flora Place at Tower Grove Avenue. The Historic Shaw Art Fair is one of the premier fine art and fine craft fairs in the St. Louis area. Around 135 top caliber artists and craftspeople from around the country are selected each year to participate in the professionally juried event. The fair showcases a number of different art mediums including photography, clay, glass, textiles, jewelry, painting, woodwork, mixed media, and sculpture. Enjoy the festive atmosphere of live music, a food court, and a children’s art area. A bonus for those attending is that the Historic Shaw Art Fair is held concurrently with the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Best of Missouri Market which is located directly across Tower Grove Avenue. So, you can get in two great fairs in one location. For more information on the History Shaw Art Fair please visit shawartfair.org If you have a taste for something more eclectic then you should make you way to the Grove neighborhood for Grove Fest. Founded in 2005, Grove Fest has grown into one of St. Louis premier events. The even has grown over the years from 7,000 attendees in its first year to over 25,000 people in attendance in 2014. This year Grove Fest takes place on Saturday, October 3 and will host nationally recognized musical acts, a grand main entrance and enhanced family areas. For the first time the event will close with a firework display celebrating 10 years. Also on tap, the traditional Paint by Number mural returns plus over 60 vendors will be the on hand with locally produced art, vintage goods, fashion, jewelry, clothes and more. The festival features a wide array of international cuisine from Grove establishments.
