Welcome back. This is the second of three articles where Mike Emerson of Pappy’s Smokehouse recommends another one of his favorite places to relax and enjoy a great meal. When we last checked in with Mike he was sending us to Mai Lee, a Vietnamese and Chinese restaurant in Brentwood. We now find ourselves at Farmhaus in south St. Louis city. As owner and chef of the go to place in St. Louis for BBQ we can trust that if Mike is recommending Farmhaus as one of his go to places for good food then we should be making our way to Farmhaus for lunch or dinner.

In Mike’s words, “Kevin Wilmann and the staff at Farmhaus do an incredible job. Upscale food with a relaxed environment. This is the place you want to go with friends to make sure you can try as many dishes as possible. Don’t miss out on the Breakfast cus who doesn’t love breakfast for dinner!”

Farmhaus is located at 3257 Ivanhoe Ave near Jamieson and Interstate 44 in the Lindenwood Park neighborhood. It’s a small, intimate venue where Kevin Willman serves up big, fresh flavors. Farmhaus has received numerous accolades since its opening in 2010. In a 2014 Zagat feature article on the hottest restaurants in St. Louis Farmhaus was described as “a cozy cottage of an establishment specializing in farm-fresh fare prepared by Chef Kevin Willmann”.

In that sentence is one of the keys to the success of Farmhaus. Chef Kevin Willmann’s philosophy is to create delicious food using the freshest local ingredients available.

The menu items change based on what is fresh and in season. Everything is given all the attention it deserves by thoughtful and talented people. Primarily self-taught in the culinary arts Kevin earned a place on the list of Best Chefs - Midwest James Beard 2015 Restaurant and Chef Award Semifinalists.

During the week Farmhaus offers one of the best deals around for lunch – a blue plate special which changes with the day. It’s quick; it’s delicious; and offered at price that can’t be beat. Dessert is extra but you really should pop for the Peanut Butter Cup. If you want the breakfast, you will need to go for dinner. As Mike said “who doesn’t love breakfast for dinner”. Follow Mike’s advice and go with friends so you can share as many dishes as possible.

Painting the Midwest: Selections from the Timothy and Jeanne Drone Collection

More than 65 works by Thomas Hart Benton, Joe Jones, George Caleb Bingham and Karl Bodmer are part of a new exhibition titled Painting the Midwest: Selections from the Collection of Timothy and Jeanne Drone. The exhibition at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art opened August 21 and runs through Dec. 20, 2015. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

The exhibition focuses on the Midwest Scene Painting Movement, as well as female artists of the early 20th century, including Kathryn E. Bard Cherry, Aimee Goldstone Schweig and Emily Summa. On a larger scale, it illustrates the effect that Midwestern artists--mostly Missouri and Illinois area artists—had on the art world in the 1930’s. Artists in the Midwest in the 1930’s thru the 40’s produced artworks that began to focus on common scenes for people living in rural America. These depictions became well known throughout the Midwest, and to the New York art scene as Regionalism. Thomas Hart Benton from Missouri, John Steuart Curry from Kansas, and Grant Wood from Iowa are credited with the birth of the Regionalist art movement.

From 1932 to 1941 the Regionalist movement in Missouri was centered in the small town of Ste. Genevieve. Many of the artists in the exhibition belonged to the Ste. Genevieve Art Colony and also to the St. Louis Artists Guild. Thomas Hart Benton worked there for one year, but because of his prominence in the art world Benton is the artist most often associated with the Ste. Genevieve colony.

Lesser known artists involved at one time or another are Sister Cassiana Marie, Joseph Paul Vorst, Bernard Peters, Martyl Schweig, Aime Goldstone Schweig, Oscar Thalinger, and Mathew E. Ziegler. Works by George Caleb Bingham and Joe Jones are also featured in the exhibit. While the art work is grouped together as part of the Regionalist movement, the exhibition displays styles along a spectrum from cubism to regionalism, impressionism to abstract expressionism.

Some of the artist—Bernard E. Peters or Kathryn Cherry--have traditional landscapes as their subject; while others—Joe Jones or Joseph Paul Vorst--portray the human condition in terms of Depression era events. For more than four decades, St. Louis residents Timothy and Jeanne Drone have gathered works that spoke to them and reflect the landscape of Middle America. The exhibit presents a wonderful opportunity to view the work of a group of artists and learn some of the history of an art movement that took root in the Midwest and was centered in Missouri.

Established in January 2002, the Saint Louis University Museum of Art (SLUMA) exhibits and collects work by modern masters. The museum’s permanent collection includes artists such as Chuck Close; Robert Motherwell; Jasper Johns; Kiki Smith; Robert Rauschenberg; Andy Warhol; Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg, and continues to grow. An exquisite collection of Dale Chihuly glass is displayed in the museum’s contemporary gallery The Saint Louis University Museum of Art is located at 3663 Lindell Blvd.
