Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis
314-664-7777 www.fritangastl.net
Open for Lunch and Dinner. Closed on Monday.
Route 66 stretched 2,448 miles across eight states and became an indelible piece of Americana thanks, in part, to the 1960s TV show “Route 66” starring Martin Milner and George Maharis and that catchy little tune “Get Your Kicks on Route 66”. Route 66, once part of the original US Highway System, became one of the most famous roads in America and is known today as the Mother Road or the Main Street of America. The Missouri History Museum is celebrating Route 66 in St. Louis and Missouri with its exhibit Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis now through July 2017. Exploring the local history of this world-famous highway visitors also lean how St. Louis has changed. Come get your kicks by learning stories about the motels, custard stands, and tourist traps that could be found along the road as it passed through St. Louis. Visitors will see a number of artifacts ranging from gas pumps to roadside signs and will even get a chance to drive the road themselves. For this exhibit the Missouri History Museum commissioned a documentary “Show Me 66: Main Street Through Missouri” where Missouri takes center stage in the story of the nation’s most famous highway. Show Me 66 explores the sights and landscapes found along the Missouri stretch of Route 66 and slips in a bit of history about the road’s birth in Springfield, the effects of World War II, the road’s relationship to the Ozarks and St. Louis, its decline to the interstates, and the rediscovery still taking place today.

“Show Me 66: Main Street Through Missouri” premieres at the Missouri History Museum on Thursday, November 10. Following the screening of the documentary there will be a Q&A session with the directors Andrew Wanko and Eric Wilkinson. If you miss the premiere you can still catch the documentary on Channel 9. Over several dates in December “Show Me 66: Main Street Through Missouri” will be broadcast on St. Louis’ local PBS station. Although Route 66 existed for less than 60 years, it has claimed a place as the Main Street of America and gained mystique as a road for unexpected encounters and personal journeys. Route 66 became an international icon symbolizing the free spirit of America. Get your kicks at the Missouri History Museum located at Lindell and DeBaliviere in Forest Park.
