“St. louis’ best steaks” - rft readers poll 1999-2016

April in Paris “April in Paris” was a much loved popular song written in the 1930’s for a Broadway play, used in many a movie musical, and performed by countless artists from Doris Day to Count Basie. At the moment the St. Louis art scene seems to be falling in love again with “April in Paris” as two major art venues currently have Paris themed exhibitions.

The Mildred Lane Kemper Museum at Washington University is presenting ‘Spectacle and Leisure in Paris: Degas to Mucha’ through May 21. The exhibition brings together a broad selection of prints, posters, photographs, and film, this exhibition offers an overview of the thriving entertainment cultures of Paris in the last decades of the nineteenth century. The art of Pierre Bonnard, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, and others addresses the spectacle of the boulevards, the speed of the racetrack, and the performance worlds of the café-concert, ballet, opera, and theater. For Parisians to attend the opera, the ballet or the Moulin Rouge was not just to see but also to be seen. Bringing together, both fine art prints and popular commercial posters, this exhibition reveals the intersection of the visual arts with public life in Paris.

Visit the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum on the web at kemperartmuseum.wustl. edu for more information about ‘Spectacle and Leisure in Paris: Degas to Mucha’. Just across Skinker Boulevard in Forest Park at the St. Louis Art Museum you can view ‘Degas, Impression, and the Paris Millinery Trade’ now through May 7, 2017. The millinery trade created all the high fashion hats for the grand dames of Parisian society. Edgar Degas was fascinated with high-fashion hats and the young women who made them, ‘Degas, Impressionism, and the Paris Millinery Trade’ features an array of period hats created by the greatest milliners of the period alongside 60 paintings and pastels, including key works by Degas that have never been exhibited in the United States. Degas’ output during this period is presented within the context of the work of his fellow Impressionists who were also fascinated by the intricate and extravagant creations of the milliners who inspired them, including Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Mary Cassatt, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Visit the St Louis Art Museum on the web at slam.org for more information about ‘Degas, Impressionism, and the Paris Millinery Trade’

Allergies DOCTOR’S

ORDERS David A. Dorsey, MD

You have an allergy when your body overreacts to things that don’t cause problems for most people--these are called allergens. Your body’s overreaction to the allergens is what causes symptoms.

COMMON ALLERGY SYMPTOMS:

• Runny nose • Watery eyes • Itchy nose, eyes and roof of mouth • Sneezing • Stuffy nose • Pressure in the nose and cheeks • Ear fullness and popping • Dark circles under the eyes • Hives

THE MOST COMMON ALLERGENS:

Pollen from trees, grass and weeds. Allergies that occur in the spring are often due to tree pollen. Allergies that occur in the summer are often due to grass and weed pollen. Mold. Mold is common where water tends to collect--shower curtains, window moldings and damp basements. This allergy is usually worse during humid and rainy weather. Animal dander. Proteins found in the skin, saliva, and urine of furry pets such as cats and dogs are allergens. Dust. Dust mites are tiny living creatures found in bedding, mattresses, carpeting and upholstered furniture. They live on dead skin cells and other things found in house dust.

Thank You St. Louis!

MEDICINES THAT CAN RELIEVE SYMPTOMS: Antihistamines help reduce the sneezing, runny nose and itchiness of allergies. Some antihistamines can cause drowsiness and dry mouth. Decongestants, such as pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine help temporarily relieve the stuffy nose of allergies. They are best used only for a short time. Nose sprays and drops shouldn’t be used for more than 3 days because you can become dependent on them. This causes you to feel even more stopped-up when you try to quit using them. Decongestants can raise your blood pressure. Talk to your family doctor before using them, especially if you have high blood pressure. Nasal steroid sprays reduce the reaction of the nasal tissues to inhaled allergens. This helps relieve the swelling in your nose so that you feel less stopped-up. Eye drops. If your other medicines are not helping enough with your itchy, watery eyes, your doctor may prescribe eye drops for you. Allergy shots. Allergy shots contain small amounts of allergens. They’re given on a regular schedule so that your body gets used to the allergens and no longer overreacts to them. It takes a few months to years to finish treatment, and you may need to have treatments throughout your life.
