Art & Science of a Solar Eclipse
Incredible Selection of Whiskeys
St. Louis hasn’t experienced a total solar eclipse since 1442 and there won’t be another one until 2505, so everyone is getting pretty excited about the one coming up on August 21, 2017. Just after 1:00pm on that Monday the moon will move between the sun and earth, casting a shadow which will completely blot out the sun. While everyone in North America will see at least a partial eclipse, the path of totality (that’s what the scientist call it) will encompass a 70 mile wide swath of Missouri from St. Joseph in the West to Cape Girardeau in the east. In some locations the eclipse will last more than two minutes. Twelve states and twelve million people live within the path of totality. Missouri with 3.4 million inhabitants living directly in the path of totality is the number one state from which to view the eclipse.

What can you expect to experience? Darkness will fall in the middle of the day. Planets and stars may appear. The temperature could drop up to 5 degrees. Animals and insects may behave like nightfall has set. Rest assured that the world will not be coming to an end and no one needs to sacrifice any livestock. But many eclipse activities are being planned. The longest eclipse durations will occur nearby in Perryville, Washington, Augusta, DeSoto, Festus, Potosoi, Kimmswick, Herculaneum, Union, Sullivan, Ste. Genevieve, and Cape Girardeau. In St. Louis eclipse festivities are happening in Jefferson Barracks Park (free and open to the public), the Magic House in Kirkwood (free with museum admission), Urban Chestnut Grove Brewing & Bierhall (beer, brats, live music), Chesterfield Amphitheatre (concert, food trucks, micro-brew village) and Bluebird Park in Ellisville (music and food). Be SAFE! Eclipse watchers MUST use ISO-certified solar glasses to view the eclipse in order to prevent permanent vision loss. Glasses will be available at most eclipse viewing locations. Get all the information about the eclipse and more (like where to get those solar glasses) at stlouiseclipse2017.org

Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car!
Gold Package
Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car for any period of time. On a warm day, the temperature in a parked car can reach 120F in a matter of minutes — seven with the car windows partially open. Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke or suffocation when trapped in high temperatures.

This is what you should do if your pet is exposed to high temperatures: • Be alert for the signs of heat stress — heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue. • If your pet becomes overheated, you must lower his body temperature immediately. • Move your pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold) water all over her body to gradually lower her body temperature. • Apply ice packs or cold towels to your pet’s head, neck, and chest only. •Let your pet drink small amounts of cool water or lick ice cubes. • Finally, take your pet directly to a veterinarian — it could save your pet’s life. If you see an animal in a car exhibiting any signs of heat stress, call your local animal care and control agency or police department immediately! You don’t just expose your pet to the dangers of heat stress when you leave him in a car, you also expose him to pet theft. Thousands of pets are stolen each year from unattended cars. Taking your pet for a ride may seem like fun, but many pets prefer to spend time with you in the comfort and safety of your home. Explore activities that you and your pet can share at home and avoid taking risks that come when you leave your pet in the car.

If you must take your pet with you in your car, do so safely: Cats should ride in pet carriers, and dogs should ride in travel crates or be on a leash. When a pet travels, she should wear two ID tags — one with a home address and one with a destination address.
