Time Spy The Saint Louis Art Museum is currently presenting Time Spy, a ten minute animated 3D film that draws from Eastern and Western traditions of art, history, myth, and imagination. To create the work, Chinese artist Sun Xun merged the 1,000-year-old woodblock print making technique with modern 3D film-making technologies. The museum’s Sun Xun: Time Spy exhibition includes the 2016 film and a selection of the more than 10,000 carved woodblocks the artist and his team created to animate Time Spy. The free exhibition will be on view through August 12. Although trained as a woodcut artist, Sun began making animations in art school, and opened an animation studio the year after he graduated. He works closely with a team of animators to produce a steady stream of films that have been screened at film festivals and exhibited in museums around the world. Sun alters the printmaking technique by doing away with the printed sheet of paper and digitally scanning his woodblocks to produce the animated film. Time Spy was commissioned by the Swiss watchmaking company Audemars Piguet, and premiered at the 2016 Art Basel in Miami. Sun reconfigured the film in the summer of 2017 to be shown on electronic billboards in New York’s Times Square. In St. Louis, his installation incorporates a gallery full of the woodblocks that were used in the making of Time Spy, a meditation on time and space with spinning moons, animals with cameras instead of heads, and a man in a top hat who morphs into a bird.
