Salvatore Scarpitta: Racing Cars The Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) of St. Louis is running the exhibition Salvatore Scarpitta: Racing Cars now through April 22. Previously known for works that pushed the boundaries of the painted canvas, Salvatore Scarpitta began to construct racing cars in the early 1960s. Over time he evolved from the purely sculptural to the fully functional moving from object maker to performance artist, participating as a racing team owner with drivers and crew. CAM presents the largest number of his race cars ever assembled in the U.S., as well as a wide selection of Scarpitta’s racing-themed artwork—drawings, paintings, prints, collage, and video. Salvatore Scarpitta (1919–2007) worked on the fringes of many art movements while not quite fitting within any one. Born in New York City in 1919 to a Sicilian father and Polish-Russian mother his family relocated to Los Angeles when he was six months of age. He served in the United States Navy during World War II as a “Monuments Man”, finding, preserving and cataloging art stolen by the Nazis. Scarpitta came of age as an artist in Italy, where he lived and worked from the 1930s through the 1950s. In 1958, Leo Castelli saw his work and asked him to move to New York and join his gallery. Scarpitta remained with Castelli until the latter’s death in 1999. Racing Cars follows the artist from the inoperable replicas of the 1960s to the fleet machines driven on the dirt-track circuit under Castelli’s sponsorship, with Scarpitta as team owner—complete with drivers and crew— in the 1980s and ’90s. CAM is located in the Grand Center arts and entertainment district, in the center of St. Louis. Grand Center is home to dozens of museums, galleries, theaters, and concert halls. The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis is located at 3750 Washington Boulevard. For complete information about this exhibition and other events at CAM please visit their website at camstl. org selecting the link to Exhibitions.

Easter Facts
• Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ in the Christian religion. • Eggs have been seen as ancient symbol of fertility, while springtime is considered to bring new life and rebirth. • Americans spend $1.9 billion on Easter candy. That’s the second biggest candy holiday after Halloween. • 70% of Easter candy purchased is chocolate. • 76% of Americans think the ears of a chocolate bunny should be the first to be eaten. • Tackle a campaign to make the world suck less. • Egg dyes were once made out of natural items such as onion peels, tree bark, flower petals, and juices. • There’s much debate about the practice of dyeing chicks. Many hatcheries no longer participate, but others say that it isn’t dangerous to the chick’s health because the dye only lasts until the chicks shed their fluff and grow their feathers. • The first story of a rabbit (later named the “Easter Bunny”) hiding eggs in a garden was published in 1680. • Easter takes place on a Sunday, after the 40-day period called Lent. Lent is referred to as a time of fasting, but participants focus more on giving up one significant indulgence. • Holy Week is the celebrated during the week leading up to Easter. It begins on Palm Sunday, continues on to Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and then finally, Easter Sunday. • “The White House Easter Egg Roll” event has been celebrated by the President of the United States and their families since 1878.
