From Caricature to Celebration:

A Brief History of African-American Dolls

Now thru June 30 at the Field House Museum located at 634 South Broadway Toys are constant companions throughout childhood and beyond. Today’s children can find themselves represented in their toys and in their imagination become that superhero or Raggedy Ann doll. For some children that has not always been the case. From Caricature to Celebration: A Brief History of African-American Dolls takes you on a tour of dolls spanning more than a hundred years. From the earliest days of traditional African dolls and racial stereotypes through the years of assimilation and early acceptance, follow the journey through more than 80 dolls to reach the present day. For more information about this exhibit and about the Field House Museum please visit them on the web at filedhousemuseum.org In March of 2007 the Eugene Field House was designated a National Historic Landmark. In giving the Eugene Field House such a designation it was stated that “the Field House, St. Louis, Missouri, is the home of Roswell Field, the attorney who formulated the legal strategy for Dred Scott’s lawsuit for freedom before the Supreme Court. The 1857 Dred Scott court decision widened the political gap between the North and the South and helped precipitate the Civil War. Today the house is a museum and memorial reflecting the era in which Roswell, Frances and Eugene Field lived within its walls.

Life Sucks – May 23 – June 10

Wool Studio Theater, A&E Building, JCC Staenberg Family Complex, 2 Millstone Campus Dr, Creve Couer, MO 63146 (314) 442-3283 https://jccstl.com/arts-ideas/new-jewish-theatre/current-productions/ An irreverent adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, Posner’s contemporary riff on the work is altogether wise, profoundly humane, hilarious, quirky, endearing and, in countless clever ways, brilliantly faithful to its source. Posner brings a playful, far from cynical, originality to the story of a group of yearning, frustrated, heartbroken, questioning, and in many ways privileged souls who are, in their varied and deeply flawed ways, trying to cope with all the essential conundrums of existence. It is essentially a play about love, loss and longing – with a healthy dose of Jewish philosophizing thrown in. Never has unhappiness been so much fun. Directed by Edward Coffield. Cast: Chris Harris*, greg Johnston, Julie Layton, Jan Meyer, Michael James Reed*, Katie Keating, Michelle Hand. (*member AEA)

End of the Rainbow – June 21-July 1

The Grandel in Grand Center https://maxandlouie.com/ It’s 1968 and Judy Garland is about to make her comeback… again. In a London hotel room, with both her new young fiancé and her adoring accompanist, Garland struggles to get “beyond the rainbow” with her signature cocktail of talent, tenacity and razor sharp wit. Featuring some of Garland’s most memorable songs, this savagely funny play-with-music offers unique insight into the inner conflict that inspired and consumed one of the most beloved figures of our time. This St. Louis premiere stars Angela Ingersoll, reprising her star turn as Judy Garland in “End of the Rainbow”, having garnered the Chicago Jeff Award for her stunning portrayal of Garland at Porchlight Music Theatre Chicago and recently, to great acclaim, at Los Angeles’ La Mirada Theatre.
