INTRODUCTION
Hello everyone Welcome to Craven’s summer of cycling
THe passing of the Tour de France through Craven on July 5-6 will undoubtedly be the highlight of this summer for many of us. But whether you live life in lycra, are an occasional rider or frankly not all that bothered about cycling, Craven has something for everyone. Tour legacy The Tour de France has inspired a rainbow of initiatives in our district. le Petit Départ on June 1st is a brand new annual cycling sportive that takes riders along much of the stage 1 route of the Tour. Craven District Council has developed 20 new recreational, family friendly cycling routes with Free guides and maps.* Communities are creating their own legacies to the Tour, such as Kettlewell’s Community Garden. culTural evenTs le Grand Départ has sparked cultural celebrations in Craven as part of the yorkshire Festival 2014. They include the Carnival by Bike in Bentham on May 31st Tour de Cinema film screenings, Cheer Sing workshops and the opportunity to be part of a band that anyone can join in the Tour of Infinite Possibilities. Craven Museum& Gallery in Skipton’s Town Hall will host Bikes, legs, Action. This summer long exhibition helps visitors understand the ins and outs of cycling. walking or cycling Walking or cycling to a viewing point is an option, as the route remains accessible to pedestrians and cyclists until approximately 30 minutes before the arrival of the Tour’s promotional caravan, approximately 2 hours before the race. Spectators cycling to the Skipton Spectator Hub are advised to leave their bike in the managed bicycle parking in Aireville Park. Public TransPorT Traveling by bus to the Tour de France route through Craven is likely to be difficult because of road closures. Trains will be running as usual, so taking the train may be an option for those who want to enjoy the entertainment in Skipton.
• Bring plenty of food, drink and/or cash for top ups • Check the weather forecast and bring suitable clothing – and even sunscreen! • Follow instructions of stewards and local signage at all times • Look out for the caravan, a fun parade of sponsor vehicles that precedes the race. Most give out goodies, such as sweets, hats and key chains • Look out for helicopters to get an idea of where the riders are. As the helicopters get closer, you’ll know the cyclists are getting closer too • Cheer on the riders, but don’t get in the way • Respect the countryside code: please take home your litter, leave gates and property as you find it, stick to designated routes, and do not climb or sit on drystone walls 16 CRAVEN SUMMER OF CYCLING - 2014
