Space Oddities Year: 2019 Project Location: Bangkok, Thailand Type: Master Disseration (individual) University: KU Leuven Sint Luca School of Architecture, Campus Ghent Supervisor: Tomas Ooms Full project: issuu.com/daliapuodziute Unknown City + Object + KhĂ´ra The genesis of the dissertation was an object from unknown city Bangkok air sample containing thousands of different typologies of gasses, bacterias, viruses and particulate matters. The sources of CO2 and particulate matters are excessive traffic, processes from factories, burning sugar cane fields around the city and even cremation processes happening in majority of Bangkok temples. At this point the focus shifts specifically to cremation which is a traditional death ritual in Thailand where Buddhism is dominant religion. In parallel the concept of khĂ´ra is introduced which is perceived as a complex combination of different phases of city development where the hypothesis is that cemeteries have a tendency to be allocated at the edge or outside the city proper of the development at-that-time and later become absorbed by the urban sprawl forming enclaves in an urban pattern. Heterotopic Enclaves and Strange Perspectives The project is a development of strategy of perceiving 10 heterotopic exclusions of cemeteries of different cultures and zoning typologies existent in the urban pattern by identifying 3 different scales (environmental issues, urban conditions and participant experience). Identified aspects in combination with detected micro-cultures within the sites are used as drivers for urban laboratories aiming to mediate in between by twisting the places of abandonment into a contribution to public space that is on high demand in the accelerated urban sprawl context. The methodology to expose and manipulate detected urban conditions twisted by interventions in 4 focal sites, traditional Thai drawing was taken as a reference. Strange and odd perspectives deriving from traditional drawing projections impulsed to use different typologies of projections that allow to grasp, highlight and encode the main elements existing and intervened within each specific situation. Miscellaneous Entanglement The experimental grounds unveiling processes happening in the sites of multi-cultures can potentially become catalysts for entanglement with another sites of migrant cultures in distant locations. The project aims to reconsider the existing spaces for multi-purpose use to reach the efficiency and sustainability of them by reinforcing sited micro-cultures and mediating in between in the quickly metabolising city of Bangkok.

Interconnected Living Year: 2016 Project Location: Kreuzberg, Berlin, Germany Type: Bachelor Graduation Project (individual) University: Vilnius Academy of Arts Supervisor: Tomas Kulesa Dichotomy Berlin is recognised for the historical division during the Cold War period when the city has been divided in two parts by the concrete wall: spacious and strict East Berlin (Soviet sector), compact and cosmopolitan West Berlin (Western allies sector) resulting in the dual development of the city. Despite the fact that the wall has fallen 3 decades ago the cultural differences are still reflecting in current life in diversity of cultures, habits and urbanism. The district of Kreuzberg being allocated at the edge of the historical wall in the West part of Berlin is known as an open and multicultural area with settled ‘graffiti’ culture and low prices of accommodation - a vibrant place for multicultures of contemporary city. Graffiti Drama The area of land in Kreuzberg in front of the Spree river has a history of its own - although it has never been a built-up area the life there was prospering - informal setlements, spontaneous markets and street art culture expressed on the firewalls of neighbouring industrial facades were components of the non-developed plot. The famous graffiti with two people forming W and E from their fingers symbolising West and East parts of Berlin as well as the human figure with chains from ‘Rolex’ watches became distinctive feature of the area. In 2014 the situation has twisted when the fire took over the informal settlements and became the impulse for new development. When the artist of the famous graffiti realised plans of new luxurous hotel clearly contradicting with the culture of the locale - he covered up his famous graffiti with black paint over one night as a protest for the insensitive top-down planning. Next Chapter, Please! The goal of the project was to create a residential space for youth of pulsating Berlin as part of student competition ‘Archmedium’. As a response, all the required programme is arranged in a continuous two-level structure of 8 metres width and more than 1 kilometer lenght composed in the site following historical perimeter of the district forming diverse inner yards. The structure contains several functions - student residences (typologies 1A, 1B, 1C), residential housing (typologies 2A, 2B, 2C), hostel (typologies 3A, 3B) and public functions (shared bathrooms and kitchens, library, pop-up offices, swimming pool, gym, two bars) maintained by the students themselves. The structure becomes a continuous matter - a compromise between historical background and the contemporary culture of locale mingling different people together providing the space for co-existence and opportunities.

Waterscape Narratives Year: 2016 - 2017 Project No.1 Location: Indrajai Lake Island, Lithuania Project No.2 Location: Svencele, Lithuania Type: Professional Practise Office: ‘Plotas’ / ‘1:1’ Project Leader: Mykolas Svirskis Link: vienasprievieno.lt Why Water? During the collaboration with the office ‘Plotas’ and educational programme ‘1:1’ I’ve worked with several projects simultaneously throughout the period of 1 year. All of the projects had one distinctive interdependent feature - the proximity to water. Lithuania being a country mostly constituted of swamps, approximately 2 700 lakes and a coastal region near the Baltic sea sets the mood and defines a way of how people have dealt with living near the water and what are the potentials for the future. 1:1 Educational Workshops - Indrajai Island ‘16 / Cocoon’17 For two summers in a row I’ve joined ‘1:1’ movement of architects which focused on educational projects aiming to build them in scale one to one. The workshops were happening in a secluded island in the northern part of Inrajai lake collectively bough by ~ 15 people who aimed to transform an island to a collony of arts. In 2016 the overgrown and half sunken island became a ground for workshop and discussions resulting in a realisation of 3 architectural objects: floating art platform + footbridge in the water + circular terrace in the middle of an island. In 2017 we decided to announce a competition to build a cocoon for two people to spend the night in the trees of an island. The winning proposal has been built collectively during the summer workshop Cocoon’17 in site. Svencele Community - from Masterplan to Individual Stories Allocated in western coast of Lithuania, just in front of the Curronian Lagoon overviewing the land strip of Curronian spit near the Baltic Sea lies the historical town of Svencele with traditional wooden houses accompanied by farms. Currently the location has become a highly popular place for the kite surfers due to perfect windy climate. With a new hub for kite surfers a community of young people have gathered in order to create an infrastructure for living in this area. The water canal has been dug, providing an accessibility to the water from each house. My contribution to this project started from the masterplan and concept finalisation to define the rules of collective development of the area, following the creation of typical houses as well as specific houses for young families with very specific needs and interests. Working with constructors played an important role in the process of the project since the goal was to use traditional wooden structure methodology although twist it to reach sustainable levels by implementing new technologies.

10 Typologies of Individual Dwelings The area contains different natural elements within each sites which resulted in different typologies of houses according to the needs of each inhabitants. Retrospective Odyssey Year: 2018 Project Location: Wittenoom, West Australia Type: Master of Architecture - 3rd semester (individual) University: Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok Supervisor: Deborah Lopez Lobato Speculative Blue Dust Crocidolite or better known as blue asbestos is a material that has been used to manipulate lives of the people by creating a dreamy utopian vision which twisted into a complete nightmare causing deaths and tragedies in Wittenoom town, West Australia. In 1930’s blue asbestos was found in the Gorges of Wittenoom where the mines and mill were soon built to extract the blue material from the ground. In total around 150 000 tones of this blue material have been mined and shipped overseas. The material was worshiped due to it’s affordability, heat-resistance and fire-proofness, although only later the hazardous effects of blue asbestos dust were discovered when miners, their wives and children started to feel the pressure on their lungs. It turned out that the fibres of blue asbestos are extremely small that they get stuck into lungs when inhaled causing asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. Monumental Wasteland The scandalous story of Wittenoom town being the largest industrial disaster in Australia soon became a monumental wasteland - a mark in peoples fates as well as an intriguing ghost town for curious dark tourists. In 2008 the town of Wittenoom was officially closed and deleted from the maps, although it still remains full of toxic material spread on the roads, airport strip, former locations of the houses and especially Wittenoom mine which is 10km away from the town. Continuum of Collective Experiment The project is aiming to reverse the story backwards and collect the dust fibres from contaminated area by bringing them back into the place where they came from - Wittenoom mines by implementing different levels of experiences for participants. Every migration of human, animal, machinery and especially wind moves the dust and spreads the particles creating toxic environment for all living forms. The strategy for redefined living and participating in the area includes the sensible technology aiming to detect invisible presence of dust migration by projecting it through Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality glasses according to the typology of spectator. A set of inflatable architectural interventions - base points as well as dust collecting suit and mobile nomadic shelter form an expedition in the deserted Wittenoom town where each participant becomes a part of cleaning-up process of the area. All together the odyssey from one point to another is oriented in a way to reveal different levels of toxicity, different parts of history and raise different emotions by telling a story of lost noxious landscape - a clear expression of athropocene.

Metabolism of a Monument Year: 2018 Project Location: Ghent, Belgium Type: Master of Architecture - 2nd semester (individual) University: KU Leuven Sint Luca School of Architecture, Campus Brussels Supervisor: Jonathan Robert Maj What is a Monument? Allocated in the Northern part of Ghent in the collision between historical and industrial zones of the city the old concrete factory ‘Interbeton’ lost its relevance and became abandoned. Through the years its elaborate industrial shape got stuck in the memories of people - ones called it an expression of ‘ugly’ while others adored the industrial artefact which continued to decay through the shift of time. The monumentality of the object is verified by the collective memory of the people but after all what is a monument in general? A piece of wall, historical landmark, non-intentional landmark, fictional landmark, gravestone or something even intangible? With the infinite potential of declaring something a ‘monument’ the further question is how do we deal with them? Contextual Shift The abandoned concrete factory slowly detoriorates being covered with grafittis and being reclaimed by the nature. Althought with the new masterplan in Dok Noord area where ~400 000m2 will be organised in strips towards the canal and densified with residences, eliminating the existing public functions - the fate of abandoned industrial monument remains vague. Should the monument be revitalised to build once more and embraced as a marker between historical and industrial areas? Or on the contrary it should be hidden - buried underground by forming a landscape on top or painted in vantablack to make it ‘dissapear’ from the sight? Or perharps if it’s not needed on the coast anymore it could become a floating monument of production? Catalyst for Metabolism If the monument is not needed there anymore, it could be considered as a catalyst for reconceptualised typology of production - a floating factory for cells of knowledge, energy and agriculture production as a manifesto for the monofunctional new masterplan which excludes the vital public funcion of the area. If there is no space for the social and educational exchange on the coast - there is space on the water! The floating factory enables to collect the material from the city through waterways and reusing the old concrete to produce floating platforms. The strategy becomes a potential for urban metabolism where the out-dated structures become a source for production of mobile cells which could become a part of disaster management in the context of rising sea levels in the coastal region of Belgium and Netherlands that are extremely vulnerable to flooding situations.

Monument as Catalyst Abandoned factory is reconceptualised to a mobile typology where old materials are collected from the city and floating factory generates new cells that could be transported through canals. Redefined typology of production results in a typologies of floating concrete cells for energy, agriculture and knowledge production.
