The Institute’s Mission... ...is to enrich and deepen the practical life of the city with the wisdom and imagination of the humanities. The humanities, as we treat them, are the written things and the spoken stories that help us define ourselves as human beings—literature, history, philosophy, politics, psychology, and mythology, among other fields. Since 1980, the Dallas Institute has conducted public programs aimed at discovering what the humanities have to offer to the cultural life of the city, and we accomplish this through classes and group studies; through public and professional seminars; through conferences and civic involvement; through programs for school teachers and principals; and through publications.

1

From the Director

J. Larry Allums, Ph.D., Executive Director “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” Here Rumi captures the tension between youth and age— and also touches on a balance that the Dallas Institute attempts to maintain. The Institute’s mission is “to enrich and deepen the practical life of the city with the wisdom and imagination of the humanities,” which implies a desire to have an impact on Dallas’ culture at large. At the same time, we aspire to be a place where any individual, regardless of age, can pause, drink deep, and continue to learn. In the coming year, the Institute will aim for a mix of familiar and innovative programming. Our Signature Six events—What Makes a City, the Education Forum, the James Hillman Symposium, the Hiett Prize in the Humanities, the MLK Symposium, and the Dallas Festival of Ideas—will again be our headliners, complemented by classes, groups, and individual events, as well as our Fall Fling, Spring Celebration, and “Classics at Cour Regard,” all of which will bring the humanities to the stage. In addition, Institute members and supporters can expect some new programming both at our Routh Street campus and throughout the city, from film series to readings to casual lectures, which we will announce in the coming months. Our hope is that this catalog reflects well our continuing attempt at (to paraphrase poet Richard Wilbur) “keeping our difficult balance.” 2

The Trinity: Nature and Public Space This past May, Mayor Mike Rawlings unveiled a new concept for the Trinity River Park. The concept includes a naturalized river landscape that is ever-changing, just like the Trinity River. During rainy seasons, the design allows for flowing waterways and lush greenery. During the drier seasons, it transforms itself into a marsh-like waterscape. The concept includes trails and sites for five elevated parks with overlooks that extend from inside the levees into the adjacent communities. Join us for this “What Makes a City? conference to see how the park will unfold and for a chance to hear from Mayor Rawlings, its designers, including lead architect Michael Van Valkenburgh, and other speakers.

The James Hillman Symposi

To honor Founding Fellow James Hillman, the Dallas Institute initiated this annual program aimed at exploring the rich depths of his lifelong study of, in his own words, a “psychology deliberately affiliated with the arts, culture, and the history of ideas, arising as they do from the imagination.” In 2016, we will explore Volume 5 of Hillman’s UNIFORM EDITION,

Alchemical Psychology, at the Dallas Institute. Friday highlights include talks by influential scholars, dinner, and a special appearance by magician Tom Verner, a close friend of Hillman’s. His performance-presentation encircles the notions of alchemy, magic, and psychology. The Symposium continues Saturday with a full day of sessions and concludes that evening with a lively celebration attended by all registrants and speakers.

The Hiett Prize in the Humanities is an annual award aimed at identifying candidates who are in the early stages of careers devoted to the humanities and whose work shows extraordinary promise to have a significant impact on contemporary culture. Endowed by philanthropist Kim Hiett Jordan, the Hiett Prize was first awarded in 2005. The 2016 Hiett finalists are determined from a nationwide field of applicants, after which they will be considered by a select panel of judges. The winner will be announced in early Fall.

Each year the Education Forum highlights and explores an issue in education that is of critical concern to the nation and to our city through two days of lectures, panels, and book discussions. Education has been the focus of the Dallas Institute’s work since its creation in 1980, and its distinctive and award-winning Teachers Academy and Principals Institute are its most enduring and far-reaching programs. Conceived and created by Dr. Louise Cowan in collaboration with her husband, Dr. Donald Cowan, the Teachers Academy and the Principals Institute were founded on the premise that has only recently gained currency in our culture—that teachers matter. The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture’s Education Forum is a multiday event held annually.

Nearly fifty years after his assassination in 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. continues to exert a powerful influence on the way we think and act in matters of civil rights in America. For more than ten years the MLK Symposium has convened a rich variety of voices, from “old lions” of the Civil Rights era who stood alongside Dr. King to contemporary figures who have found new ways of championing the ideal of true equality. In 2017 the Symposium will focus on “Race and Justice in America Today.”

Ideas are vital to a vibrant life. The Dallas Festival of Ideas unites thought with community action in a multi-day event designed to envision and improve our city’s next century. Through provocative programs, interactive discussions, live music, performances, visual art, and more, the 2017 Festival will help shape the future of Dallas by asking these questions: What does the future look like for Dallas as a healthy city? A physical city? An entrepreneurial city? A literary city? An educated city?

Let's unite to build a vibrant city. April 28-29, 2017 Visit thedallasfestival.com for details 13

One of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture’s most enduring programs, the Teachers Academy was established in 1984 with a summer literature program for Dallas area high school teachers with a focus on recovering a sense of “Literature as a Mode of Knowledge.” Praised by the National Endowment for the Humanities as a “model for the nation,” the cornerstone of the Teachers Academy is its three-week Summer Institute for Teachers held each July. Sixty schoolteachers gather as intellectual and imaginative colleagues for an intensive immersion in classic texts. In two interdisciplinary, multi-cultural literature classes taught in alternating summers, teachers are guided by expert faculty to approach the works in a method and an experience unique to the Teachers Academy.

Through the Humanities, we examine and preserve the human experience. Finding meaning in philosophy, art, music, literature, and poetry binds us not only to those who’ve come before us, but also to our contemporaries. The humanities help us understand what it means to be human. People who know how history is made are better equipped to make history themselves. Our goal at the Dallas Institute is to make our community stronger by helping our city build an enduring foundation in the humanities. Please join the people who have joined the Dallas Institute. Through your annual membership you will help build a more vibrant, more capable, more innovative, and more enlightened Dallas.
